Zhe Senior Class Presents “Zke Old and the J )ew” Zhe 1961 JVeskobe Brandon Migk Sckool Brandon, Vermont Zhe History of Brandon High School Brandon High School was built in 1916 by contractor, Thomas Rogers, whose bid of $41, 773 was accepted. Of course as time progressed, it cost more than first estimated because of world changes. Up to this point all twelve grades were in the old Seminary which long since has been converted into a public school. In the northwest corner of the building is a marble block bearing the figures 1916. Inside this block is a copper box containing a number of articles including: copies of the seconds of district meetings at which the school was discussed and authorized, names of the architect (Elmer Bailey), contractors, building committee, principal and superintendent, a copy of the latest school catalogue, school district report for 1916, copies of the Rutland Herald and the Brandon Union. Also included were a bulletin of the State Board of Health containing rules in force governing school buildings, a pamphlet containing a brief history of Brandon and accounts of early school meetings in the town, date of the breaking ground for the building with a statement of its cost as shown by the accepted bids, a report of the special committee appointed to investigate and report on the question of a new building and some coins dated 1916. The towns that sent students to this school then were: Sudbury, Leicester, Shoreham, Castleton, Orwell, and Brandon. This year was our last as a separate school, for next year we will be included in the Otter Valley Union High School. We can never forget all the students and faculty that have come and gone from B. H. S. and the impressions they have left with us. We hope that this last year has been the best B. H. S. has ever had in spirit, sportsmanship and all that is traditionally dear to us. MR. ASHLEY MRS. BARNA MR. BARNA MRS. YOUNG MRS. WYMAN MR. SHEA MR. RIPLEY MRS. RICH MR. COOLIDGE MRS. CROSBY MISS FORCE MRS. FOX BRANDON HIGH SCHOOL BRANDON, VERMONT Dear Seniors: Fate placed in your hands the unique opportunity of being the last class to graduate from this educational institution. You stand at the apex of one hundred and fifty-five years of secondary education in the village of Brandon, the last forty- five of which have been in the present plant. Many illustrious classes and several thousand students have graduated from Brandon High School and have gone on to make their mark in the world. I am sure that the Class of 1961 will be no ex- ception to this long tradition of fine graduating classes. You have given freely of your time and talents in making this year one of the best years. So often the pervading feeling can be one of What is the use. Let's wait until next year, under circumstances similar to ours. Your leader- ship has been felt on the soccer and baseball fields, the basketball floor and in the Athletic Council. The school news- paper and yearbook give promise of being the finest yet. The student council and monitor squads have never functioned more effectively. This list could continue at length. While you cannot claim all of the credit, as Seniors you occupy positions of leadership in most of the organizations of the school and consequently set the tone and morale level of the stu- dent body. I would like to offer you a challenge and yet another task. As alumni of Brandon High School, are you going to be satisfied with standing by and watching this group gradually die out as the years go by? Any school benefits from a strong alumni association. The new Otter Valley Union Hjgh School needs your support. The alumni of Brandon High School and Pittsford High School occupy much the same position as the parents of the bride and groom at a wedding. Understand- ing parents with greater insight from years of experience can smooth away many of the problems that are met in the first few years. Favoritism and partiality on the part of the parents can only make the path more stony and the union more difficult. I ask you to support and actively exert leadership in any effort that your association may make in the amalgama- tion of the two schools and in alumni programs supporting the educational objectives of the new high school. I have enjoyed the opportunity and privilege of sharing with you the past two years of our respective lives. I extend my heartiest congratulations to the Class of 1961 and with them my fervent hope for your future success. Sincerely, Lloyd A. Class Mistery We, the class of 1961, began our high school career with a class of seventy-five members. Our officers were: President - Douglas Smith: Vice President - Rachel Brown: Secretary - Ada Marcelle; Treasurer - Robert Steele. Grace Dennehey and Douglas Smith were chosen as Student Council represent- atives. Class advisors were Mrs. Clifford, Mr. Barker, and Mr. Lewis. After participating in the traditional Freshman Initiation early in October 1957, we proudly became full-fledged members of Brandon High School, and we quickly settled down and looked anxiously forward to four years of work and fun together. Dues for the year were $2.50, and to increase our funds, we sponsored a successful spring dance. Mrs. Clifford and Mr. Shea were the class advisors during our sophomore year. Douglas Smith was re-elected class president, and Thomas Beauregard was chosen vice-president. Grace Dennehey became secretary, and Char- lotte Fisk was elected treasurer. The Student Council representatives were Grace Dennehey and Barbara Kapitan. Class activities this year were the Harvest Dance held in October and two food sales held in the winter and spring. The class rings we ordered at the end of the year were expected to arrive early the next fall. At the beginning of our junior year we elected the following officers: President - Barbara Kapitan; Vice President - Thomas Beauregard; Secretary - Grace Dennehey; Treasurer - Bruce Young. For Student Council represent- atives we elected Rosalind Baker and Gisele Leduc. The activities this year were the annual Ham Supper, two food sales, and a three-act play, In 25 Words - Or Death, which was directed by Mr. and Mrs. Barna. An Even- ing In Hawaii was the theme of our junior prom held May 20, 1960. On the day of the dance the gym was very convincingly converted into a serene and fragrant tropical island complete with palm trees, pineapples, fish nets, flowers, and a grass and wooden throne for the king and queen. The Men of Note from the University of Vermont provided music for the occasion. Class advisors for the year were Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Clifford, Mr. Barna, and Mr. Shea. Beginning our final year at B.H.S., we elected the following officers: President - Barbara Kapitan; Vice President - Thomas Beauregard; Secretary Rosalind Baker; Treasurer - Donna Wetmore. Lynn Marsette and Bruce Young were the Student Council representatives. On December 9th and 10th, we presented the play, January Thaw, which was directed by Mr. and Mrs. Barna. The goal this year is to understand neighbors, home and abroad, and to further this goal we had speakers who spoke to us about life in foreign countries. The state project was Teenagers as Better Citizens and for this we made a survey in the high school to better understand teen-age problems. Among this year’s accomplishments were: A U.N. luncheon for the faculty, an annual Faculty Silver Tea, a mother-daughter supper, a reception for the National Honor Society, and the Fashion Show. The battling Bison soccer team of 1960 gave us the most exciting season that we have had in five years. Even though we did not achieve any honors, this year can be called a real success. The Bisons had loyalty, team spirit, and above all the deter- mination to fight to the end. The 1960-61 basketball season was the best one seen by Brandon High for several years. As is common with most good things, the season started poorly. With much hard work and effort on the part of the coach and his team, we won most of our home games. Injuries were few this year compared to the number last year. One of the reasons for the team's success this year was the players recognition of the worth of team play, rather than individual play. Too, the co-operation between Coach Shea and his team was outstanding. Mr. Shea is to be congratulated for the excellent work done with both the soccer and basketball teams. A great inspiration for those concerned was the understanding that this was the last year as Brandon High School. Although the record made is not all in the win column, the record of good sportsmanship and team work can be found in both the win and loss columns.
