While we were still huddled in our houses suffering from Florida's coldest winter in years, members of the Boys' Track Team were out at McLane Stadium running laps and jumping hurdles in pre- paration for their challenging season. In January, Coach Jett DeCola assessed his team this way: We are a very young and inexperienced team, but we have over sixty members, and we hope to im- prove throughout the season. Track team members started the 1981 season boasting a record of having won their last 54 dual and triangular meets in a row. The team had also won the last four Western Conference Championships. Despite their lack of experience, team members gave their best efforts toward upholding the proud reputation of Boys' Track at Brandon High. 146 f Boys' Track y 622' , ia ., X . ... To win 55 1 iii' ...--nuill'l'! 4.40 Mattie Lang practices throwing the shot put in her spare time. Cheryl Green proves her endurance as a distance runner. Practice, practice, practice -that was one thing that Brandons girls' track team could get enough of. They put in many hours of hard work after school in which they proved the ability of the girls' track team to defend their Western Conference and District titles. The tri-captains of the girls' track team were Mattie Lang, Cheryl Green, and Shawn Polite. Mattie Lang went unsur- passed in the field events. Cheryl Green put forth her best effort as a distance run- ner, while Shawn Polite excelled as a sprinter. Coaches Owen Self and Jim Sumner were always there to provide the girls with that extra boost of encouragement that they needed to excel. With such great individual achievement and determina- tion, the girls' track team continued to prove in every meet that all the practicing and coaching would lead them on to vic- tory.
