An entry In the Journal of JanIce Dykes In the summer of 1960 I left my famIly behInd and set out for the bIg polItIcal conventIon In ChIcago, IllInoIs Upon arrIvIng at the rallroad statIon, I went straIght to the tIcket wIndow where ALICE SMITH was clerk After talknng wIth her, I found that JIMMY WHEELER and HAROLD ALMAN were both workmg there as engIneers WhIle I was Waltlng to depart from Tampa, I met PAT VINSON, KAY CLEM ENTS, JACKLYN YUHAS, and BARBARA LUMSDEN, all teachers In Hlllsborough County, on theIr way to FSU for a teachers meetIng Somewhat later, I walked over to the newsstand, and to my great surprIse, whose pIcture was on the cover of a movIe magazIne but SYLVIA STONE and her manager, HUBERT KING' I bought a newspaper and hurrIedly turned to the sports sectIon I recognIzed Coach BOBBIE HUNNICUTT pIctured wIth hIs champIon basketball team on wh1ch DENNIS WALDROP was the star player Farther down on the page I notIced that coached by DOROTHY LOWE, had won theIr seventh game at the school play days Then I heard the conductor call, All Aboard , and I hurrIed to the traIn After I boarded the traIn and found a seat, I resumed readIng my newspaper On the front page I read about a notor IOUS gangster who had just been appre hended by GEORGE PINEGAR, a famous FBI agent, assIsted by ALICE M MAHAN, hIs secretary When I had become tIred, I looked around at the other passengers Across the aIsle I notIced IRMA QVAN VAEREN BERGHJ and WALTER ROBERTSON and spoke to them I learned that Walter had a good Job as an aIrcraft mechanIc In Tampa, and that he and Irma had a nIce home In a small subdIvISIon of Brandon called Palm RIver After a whIle, we stopped In a sIdIng at a town, to Walt for another traIn to pass I stepped outsIde for a moment, and to my amazement, I saw HILDEGARDE VALTIN and THERMAN FERTIC, who ex planned that they were waItIng for some Page Tu M113 Four Class cattle commg In on another tram for theIr adJo1nIng cattle ranches At last, we arrlved at Chlcago and I proceeded to haIl a taX1 The drIver was none other than EARL HINTON, who drove me safely to the hotel, where DOYLE HARRIS, the doorman, helped me out of the taxI and took my baggage InsIde In the lobby I saw MAXINE WOOD, CAROL HARRIS, DONNA HOOD, LINDA JOHNSON, JACKIE MARTIN, EVELYN BRY ANT, DORIS MAYS, and DORIS ADAMS, a few of the large number of secretarles attendIng the conventIon to take notes When I went over to regIster, I dns covered the man In front of me was DANIEL SMITH, the banker, a delegate from Florlda He explamed that he had left SARA QLANIERJ at home, as she worked as a reglstered nurse, but had brought wIth hIm CALVIN MII LER, an accountant In the bank where he worked Later, whIle walkIng around town, I JUNE MCCLINTOCK a n d FLOURINE STEARNS who had left theIr chIldren at home and had come to attend the Con ventIOn wIth theIr husbands Soon after, whIle loOkIng for 1 good place to eat, I met FRANK THOMAS, now a prosperous archltect He told of some plans he had recently drawn One was a large super market for MILTON LOVE LACE, another, a new laboratory at a famous college where GEORGE NOBLE was professor of Chemlstry The conventlon had a great openIng the next day There were many people I had known takIng part RICHARD MC PHERSON led the band wh1ch played there NILA JONES played the Organ for the sIngIng I also caught a glImpse of WILLIAM CUMMINS and HERMAN LOPEZ workIng as televIsIon technIc1ans The beautIful flowers on the platform were Sald to be from GUYAN BARRY,S nursery Was I surprIsed to learn that CHARLES NAUGLE was Speaker of the House and that hIs lovely Secretary was none other than BETTY HAGIN' 7 , . . the girls' volleyball team at B.H.S., met SHEARER SMITH, NAOMI ROBERTS, ,, , ,... . . . . .
