Although Brandon High School has many facets, the classes that make up our high school are the core for all the activities that surround the school life. Various sport seasons, elections, clubs, Who’s Who, homecoming and the crowning of the queen, finding out who won Mr. and Miss BHS — all of these activities and more make up the total picture here at Brandon High. From the time we walk in as nervous, anx- ious Freshman to the time we leave as confi- dent Seniors, the memories we hold of these day-to-day activities as we learn together will last a lifetime. All of the pieces and many more fit together to solve the puzzle and form the picture that is Brandon High School. 6 Purvie Green Outgoing is a word which best describes this year’s Mr. BHS, Purvie Green. Purvie has been very active in all aspects of high school student life. He has served willingly on the Student Council all four years, representing the student body as parliamen- tarian his sophomore year, reporter his junior year, and serving as vice president his senior year. Purvie was also elected class president his freshman, junior, and senior years. Classmates and teachers alike have bestowed honors upon Purvie. He was elected class favorite during each of his four years in high school. During his sophomore year, he was elected beau. Purvie was voted Most Athletic in the annual Who’s Who elec- tion during his senior year, and selected by the faculty to be featured in the Brandon High School Hall of Fame. He also represented the school at Boys’ State. Purvie has striven for excellence in the athletic program at BHS by distinguishing himself in both track and football. Further- more, Purvie has been an integral member of many clubs and organizations throughout his high school career and is presently an ac- tive member of the Beta Club, Key Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Purvie’s leadership and involvement have served as a model for his peers. Brandon High School is indeed fortunate to be represented by such an accomplished young man. 10 In considering the ideal candidate for Miss BHS, three qualities come to mind: school spirit, determination, and friendliness. All three are personified by this year’s Miss BHS, Missy Baker. Her years of dedication to the student council, service in student government, and devotion to cheerleading, exemplify her in- volvement with Brandon High School and displays her school spirit. Her hard work on the Lady Bulldog’s softball team and her diligence in the classroom are shining ex- amples of her determination. Missy never meets a stranger — thus she is well known for her friendliness. It is easy to see why Missy, with her cheerful disposition, was elected a class favorite for three years and class beauty, homecoming maid, and Most Popular her senior year. Missy, the daughter of Tom and Merle Baker, attends First Baptist Church. 11 Homecoming Homecoming at Brandon High School is always a fun-filled, exciting week — especially with this year’s theme, “Salute to the Comics.” Students and teachers alike were caught up in preparation for Friday’s events. The senior float received the first place award for the best float. The week culminated with a Bulldog vic- tory over the Jim Hill Tigers 7-6. Cheers and applause filled the night air as Jodie Howell was announced 1986 Homecom- ing Queen. Tears shown in Jodie’s eyes as Mr. Freddie Hutton crowned our new queen. Jimmy Lamb served as the disc jockey as the student body celebrated at the Homecom- ing Dance. Bulldog players, cheerleaders, band members, and student fans all joined in and danced till midnight. His involvement in school and stu- dent life includes four-year membership in the Beta Club, the Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Student Council. An excellent student, Purvie has earned several academic awards and was chosen to Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Highly respected by his classmates, Purvie has been elected to several key leadership roles including class officer, class favorite, club officer, Who’s Who, and Mr. Brandon High School. An accomplished athlete, he has been an integral part of the BHS athletic program for the past four years. Purvie’s mother is Mrs. Annie S. Green. He attends Truevine Bap- tist Church. Pacesetter is the one word that best describes Mike Jay. His intense discipline and unwavering dedication have enabled him to set the pace for his classmates and the Brandon High School student body. During his four years at BHS, Mike has been out front setting the pace for his fellow students in the classroom, student goven- ment, club activities, athletics, and student life. Ex- tremely popular and highly respected, Mike has been honored many times by his peers as is evidenced by his election to class beau, class favorite, class officer, club officer, student council president, and Most Popular. His academic and community accomplishments have earned him membership in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Jay, Mike is an active member of the Faith Presbyterian Church in Brandon. Amber Kennedy, daughter of Tommy and Phyllis Kennedy, brings an outstanding record of school, church, and community activity to the Brandon Hall of Fame. Speech Club, Outdoors Club, Annual Staff, and Girl’s State are only a few of her school activities. Amber’s church and com- munity involvements include the “Voice of Democracy” speech contest, Lion’s Club activities for girls, and youth and handbell choirs at Bran- don’s First Baptist Church. Her academic achievements include the National Honor Roll and membership in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Always popular among her peers, she was elected to Who’s Who. In addition to this, she was chosen as editor of the annual and other leadership positions. Amber plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in communications. 32 Beautiful, dependable, entergetic, and personable, Staci Purvis brings a highly diversified list of ac- complishments to the Brandon High School Hall of Fame. Honors that mark each high school year include Class Beauty, Class Favorite, Cheerleader, and Homecoming Maid. Staci’s leadership role is evidenced by her involvement with the Beta Club, Student Coun- cil, Junior Classical League, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Mu Alpha Theta. Her outstanding academic achievement has led her to membership in Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Girl’s State Delegate, and to a place on the National Honor Roll. Highly respected by her peers, Staci was selected Most Dependable during her senior year. The daughter of Pat Purvis and Vic Purvis, Staci finds time to participate in many church and Christian endeavor activities. Her musical talent is widely used at Bran- don’s First Baptist Church. Joey Turner brings an exceptional academic record to the Brandon High School Hall of Fame. His awards, honors, and activities include Beta Club, Math Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Junior Classical League and the Outdoors Club. Also, Joey has represented his school as a participant in the Governor’s School, Boy’s State, and the State and National Junior Classical League conventions. He is a National Merit Semi-finalist, Century III Leadership Scholar, and recipient of the prestigious Sewanee Award for Excellence. All of Joey’s interests, however, are not academic. He is a four-year member of the marching band and the symphonic band, and a two-year member of the jazz ensemble. Joey’s parents are Joe and Cynthia Turner and his church is Crossgates Baptist. After spending his freshman year in Germany where he received several honors and titles, John West entered Brandon High School during his sophomore year. He adjusted rapidly and has compiled an out- standing academic record each of the three years he has attended BHS. During his freshman year in Ger- many, John was a member of the National Junior Honor Scoiety, and a member of the Ski (snow) team. Since moving to Brandon, he has been an active member of the Junior Classical League, Mu Alpha Theta, Mensa, Beta Club, and the Bulldog Annual Staff. Other academic honors include Who's Who Among American High School Students, National Merit Semi-finalist, and the National Honor Roll. Recognized by his peers as an exceptional young man, John has been elected to serve as class and club officer and was voted Most Likely to Succeed by his fellow students. He served as a delegate to both the Business Week Conference and the MACTE conference and placed second in the Peace Science Fair, Chemistry Division. His parents are John and Ruth West. 33 Friends Packing up the dreams God’s planted In the fertile soil of you. Can’t believe the hopes He’s granted Means a chapter in your life is through. But we’ll keep you close as always. It won’t even seem you’ve gone. ’Cause our hearts in big and small ways Will keep the love that keeps us strong. And friends are friends forever. If the Lord's the Lord of them; And a friend will not say never, ’Cause the welcome will not end. Though it’s hard to let you go. In the Father’s hands we know That a lifetime’s not too long To live as friends. Gard Aafos Gard Aafos, who lives with the John Mulkey family, has become actively involved in Brandon through his participa- tion in the soccer program, and his membership in various school clubs and civic organiza- tions. Although he misses his home country, Gard feels very much at home here. In Memory Of. . . Tammy Clark Dion Davidson The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, 1 will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my haed with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Packed into the seventeen short years of Tammy Clark’s life were warmth, hap- piness, energy, and many other characteristics which overshadowed her in- tense suffering. She was active in the soft- ball program, and served as the Junior League Homecoming Queen in 1985. Tammy’s fighting spirit gave her three years longer than the doctors prognosed after her cancer was discovered. Her death on June 27, 1986, has been a keen reminder that we too can make our lives sublime. A place is empty in the classroom. A posi- tion on the baseball field is unmanned. A lit- tle laughter is missing from the halls, for in the summer of 1986, Dion Davidson was suddenly taken from us. He cannot be replaced and we miss him terribly, but the memories we have of him are some of our warmest. He was a happy, caring person, loved both by faculty and the student body. The principals, secretaries, teachers, and aides all give their personal best each day with instruction, sup- port, help, caring, and hard work. Our faculty does much more than stand in front of a class and speak. The job of being a teacher requires much preparation, patient and understanding instruction to students, and hours of grading and recording papers. Each teacher invests all of this time and ef- fort in an attempt to make our futures better. This year, in addition to all of their regular duties, teachers were required to complete the MTAI — Mississippi Teacher Assessment Instrument. After many long hours of hard work, portfolios were con- structed and turned into the principals. Prin- cipals spent hours and hours evaluating the individual portfolios. Finally came “THE” day when the teacher was evaluated on his her classroom performance. The Bran- don Faculty took all of this in stride and all participants came through with flying colors. The Brandon Faculty still finds time to make the school day enjoyable for their students. They can always find time to lend a helping hand, console a friend, or en- courage an individual to do his best. 46 1 48 Faculty Dr. Mike Vinson Superintendent of RCSD Elinor Comfort Principal Mary Giordano Secretary Freddie Hutton Principal Nelle Mashburn Secretary Marjorie Melvin Secretary Gail Miller Secretary Janice Mclntire Secretary Phillip O’Brien Office assistant Sandra Parker Secretary John Patrick Principal Kayron Semple Principal Wilson Taylor Principal Judy Walker Secretary Ruth Watkins Principal Norma Adams — LD, Grades 912 Ruth Adkins — Biology; Adv. Whatever the season, there is a sport, a mood, and a set of teams to match. At Bran- don High School we enjoy sports, whether in body or in spirit. Everyone’s spirit of cooperation and willingness to work towards school victory produces the kind of results of which we are proud. The player’s deter- mination and enthusiasm serves as a model for us all. The many practices and hours of hard work prepared the players for the challenges that lay ahead in upcoming events and life. We followed our Bulldogs as they represented us on the varied playing fields, and we cheered them in victory and defeat. 90 Varsity Football Once again, the 1986 Bulldog football team had a winning season. Their successful year was enhanced by the feelings of enthusiasm, spirit, and coopera- tion which all of the members displayed. The long practices and hard work finally paid off as the team registered a 6-3 overall record. The list of victories included a homecoming victory over Jim Hill and a shutout of rival Northwest High. This year we are doubly proud of this outstanding group because the 1986-87 Brandon High Cheerleaders gained national recogni- tion. This past summer at Mississippi State University, the squad won the Award of Excellence for being the best squad at camp. This honor allowed the cheerleaders the privilege of competing at the National Cheerleader Champion- ship which was held in Orlando, Florida. The Brandon Group competed against 85 other squads from throughout the United States, placing 15th in the final round of competition. Jodie Howell was chosen All American Cheerleader and will be a National Cheerleader Assoc- iation instructor next year. Hard work is a rule rather than the ex- ception to this group. They put in long, hard hours of practice to prepare themselves for the routines that they perform. In preparation for the weekly pep rallies that we all enjoy so much, the cheerleaders make signs, prepare skits, and orchestrate the events of each rally. This year, in addition to all this, they were involved in many fund raising ac- tivities which netted over $13,000 that paid their way to the national competition. Brandon High Cheerleaders — a group that deserves all the alcolades, applause, and recognition that we can bestowe on them — we are very proud of you! 96 Pictured bottom row, left to right: Ginger Landry, Shannon Williams, Stacy Hathcock, Heather Murray, Staci Purvis, Kelly Goss; middle row, left to right: Alana Phillips, Ashley Thomas, Leigh Allison Lyell, Scott Hollis (Mascot), Missy Baker, Roxi Turnage, Quanda Keys; back row, left to right: M. Shannon, the students and faculty wish to salute you and let you know how proud of your accomplishments we are. National Merit Finalists Each year the National Merit Scholarship Corporation chooses 15,000 participants nationwide to compete in the Merit Scholarship Program on the basis of their per- formance on the PSAT NMSQT. From the pool of this year’s Semi- Finalists, approximately 13,500 will be chosen to continue in the competition as finalists on the basis of their performance on the SAT. Of these, only about six thousand will receive scholarships of up to $2,000, as well as addi- tional college and business spon- sored scholarships of up to $8,000. These clubs represent a range of widely different interests — from the Out- doors Club to Mu Alpha Theta. In these clubs, we have all shared a spirit of cooperation and trust which will be in- valuable to us as we proceed in life. The long hours of dedication and hard work that were put into each project all seemed worth it as we reached our final goals. The in- dividual achievements of our many clubs ad- ded not only to the integrity of the achievers, but also to the entire school as well. 118 Annual Staff The Brandon High School an- nual staff has once again worked very hard in preparing THE BULLDOG. For his first year as our pride and joy, Bully (alias Scott Hollis) has fulfilled those two qualities and many more. Bully’s skits and new activities have encouraged the student body to cheer their team to a Bulldog victory. Last summer, Bully attend- ed the cheerleader camp with the members of the cheerleading squad at Mississippi State University. Cadets have the challenge and accompanying satisfaction of assuming respon- sibility in their formative years. They learn basic military pro- cedures during the succeeding years. They plan to direct unit training, make decisions on mat- ters pertaining to personal habits and discipline, and assume command respon- sibilities. Young people in business executive training must wait years to gain many of these experiences and to exercise this type of authority. The major goal of the JROTC Program at Brandon High School is to make better citizens of the community. 140 141 Changing Together Middle School — this is where all the fun and hard work begins. Sports, dating, dances, and clubs all begin here, not to men- tion the homework. In these four years, you will receive the training necessary for you to successfully make it through your high school years. Not everyone welcomes this challenge with open arms, however. Some view it with anxiety and even fear — fear of new teachers, new classmates, and a new school. Within six weeks however, most of us consider these four years as one of the best times of our life. 142 •'Mo Eighth Grade Hall of Fame Pictured left to right: Katie Philley, Tex Zizak, Amy Shows, Keith James, Katie Frederick, Michael Perry, London Surghnor, Michael Tolbert. Their little hearts were beating rapidly as they entered Stevens Elementary School for the first time. The first graders were also anxious to start school, and they adjusted well. The recently promoted second-graders welcom- ed the new students, showing them all the tricks. Moving to Brandon Elementary this year, the third graders were happy to be with older boys and girls. The fourth graders con- sider themselves practically grown and set examples for the younger grades. Each of the five grades incorporated in Stevens Elementary and Brandon Elemen- tary have enjoyed a year full of fun and study. In addition to their studies, students enjoyed Halloween, Christmas, and Valen- tine parties. Special events that many took part in were the Halloween Carnival, the Singing Christmas Tree, and the 4-3 Jubilee. 198 Fourth Grade 200 Tera Agee Robbie Alexander Evie Alford Mandy Alford Stan Alford Blaine Allen Matt Alliston Michael Anderson John Applewhite Allen Arender Amanda Aycock Keli Aycock Corey Baker Krista Bell Brian Berberette Zeke Board Chris Bogen Mark Boler Chad Brady Samantha Brock Jennifer Brown Joshua Brown Latonya Brown Deborah Bryant Jason Bryant Marc Bryant Thomas Burch Lindy Burchfield Todd Bush Sandra Bushey David Cabell Christy Chase Raven Chrestman Mike Clark Stephen Cliburn Daniel Cochran Buck Cooper 201 Gabriel Cowart Robyn Cox Lacasta Cutrer Chris D’Ambrosio Samnatha Darnell Pamela Davis Shannon Davis Tyrone Davis Alison Deming John Dicks Ben Dixon Laura Anne Dowdle Jamie Drennan Kasey Dukes Justin Duvall Gina Eddy Jack Edwards Chris Estes Cassie Evans Drew Evers Amanda Ezell Bennie Lynn Farmer Dee Ferguson Amanda Fillingame Hope Ford Carri Fowler Robin Franklin Tapestry Franklin Michael Fulghum Stephen Fuller Leah Fulton Jeremiah Gill Andy Gipson Brande Goldman Kelly Grady Eric Graham Anthony Gray 202 Chad Hammons Devin Hammons Larry Harper Andy Harrist Brian Hart Angela Harvey Christine Haynes Meredith Heberstreit Josh Henry Ryan Herndon Gary Hinson Buddy Hodgin Krystal Hodgins Ashley Hogan Michael Hogue Laura Hong Matt Hopson Rosalyn Horn Donnie House Emily Howard Laurie Howard Jonathan Howell Joe Huff Cathy Hughes Andy Jackson Latawanya Jefferson Chris Johnson Dwayne Johnson Jason Johnson Bryan Jones Jackie Jones Jason Jones Tamara Jones Patty Jordan Tasha Karnes Eric Kelly Chris King 203 Meredith King Miranda King Elizabeth Lach Kristie Lawrence Ricky Lewis Laurie Lizana Brian Loe Adam Loper Kimberly Lowe Scott Lusk Jaime Lyons Holly Markham Michael Marsman Becky Martin Flint Martin Matthew Martin Scott Mason Melissa Mateer Michela McAlpin Stephanie McCarty Jimmy McCoy Julee McKay Nicolas McKee Nicole McKee Troy McKee B.J. Then, look at Brandon High School and you can see that the student body is certainly not behind on any of the current ones. We seem to know what is “In” and what is “Out” and what is “Hot” and what is “Not.” We are up on everything from the latest fashions that drive us wild to the new “Baby on Board” signs that drive us crazy. Even our lockers are filled with items that each BHS student MUST have. Without them, a locker is just a locker. With them, a locker turns in to a pleasant reprieve from the mun- dane hour just spent in a classroom. As we all take notice of fads so that we can be considered “In”, the Brandon School System has done the same. Our school system is constantly trying to upgrade its im- age. This year, a new kindergarten program has been implemented. Five classes of kindergarten students initiated the school systems first change. These classes are located at Stevens Elementary and Brandon Elementary. In addition to this, Brandon High School is watching as our new cafeteria is being constructed. Coleman Hammons Construction Company is doing the actual building, while Lack, Bishop, and Paterson designed the building. This adds much to the image of BHS. Additions and Renovations to LACK, BISHOP AND General Contractor: COIMAN HAMMONS CONSTRUCTION CO, INC. Rankin County School Board ' • BRANDON HIGH SCHOOL Brandon, MS. 244 In Your Locker!!! COUP Where do you find your lunch that was stolen? Where do you find your overdue library book? Where do you find your gym shorts? Where is Mrs. McGuire’s paper that took you two weeks to write? Where are your car keys? Where is Mrs. Britt’s homework? You’re at home and where are your notes? Where is your lost tuba? Where are the earrings your sister told you not to lose? Where’s the cheat sheet you knew was in your pocket? Where is the No. 2 pencil you need for your Scan-Tron tests? Where are your annual receipts? Where is a good place for a stick-up? IN YOUR LOCKER!!! 246 “Hall Talk” . . . SHE said that about HIM???? . . . What was on Mrs. McGuire’s test? . . . I LOVE that outfit!!! . . .HeisS-O-O-Ofine!!!! . . . Hey, meet me at Burger King after school! . . . Does Mrs. Britt take up our homework? . . . I didn’t know THEY were dating! ... He did WHAT? . . . I really failed Worley’s test! . . . Are you busy this weekend? . . . Who’s having a party?!? 247 Building Renovation Brandon High School students watched with interest and anticipation as the new cafeteria was constructed this year. Students and faculty were greeted with red dirt and gravel when everyone returned in the fall. Slow- ly the foundation was laid and the building began to take shape. As workers accomplished their tasks, students and teachers alike were seen peering out windows and doors, watching the construction at various phases. Finally, the concrete plaza was laid and we were able to actually peek in the door to view the inside of the building. And at last the building was deemed fit by the architects; we began having our lunch in the cafeteria. What a difference! No longer did you have to shout to the person sitting next to you to be heard — or have to go to the old gym for sack lunches. The attractive color scheme and pleasing atmosphere have added so much to the time that we spend in the cafeteria. The student body is appreciative of the time and efforts taken to im- prove their school. 248 A New Addition Brandon welcomed with open arms its newest addi- tion — public kindergarten. Many individuals see kindergarten as learning through play. The kindergarten approach is “learning centers” where opportunities are provided for children to acquire skills and concepts in- volving problem solving, decision making, questioning, evaluating, and discovering. This technique promotes active participation by the learner with the teacher serv- ing as the planner. The major concern that each of the kindergarten teachers has addressed is to develop a love of learning. Parents enrolled their five-year olds, watched as they boarded the bus for the first time with their “Hulk Hogan” and “Strawberry Shortcake” lunch boxes, and 249 wiped a tear as their “babies” went to school. The five- year olds, approaching this new experience with the op- timistic view that five-year olds possess, became ac- customed to the structure of the new system. And at the end of their year, the children emerged with memories of an enjoyable, fun year — a year which produced children who enjoyed learning and who were ready for entry into first grade. Caution: Baby-on-Board! “Get closer so I can read that sign.” “What does it say?” “Closer, I still can’t read it.” “Well, what does it say!?” “Oh, no! Call the police. His mother-in-law is in the trunk!” Recently, we have been seeing a new trend in car advertisements. Baby-on-Board signs have replaced bumper stickers, fuzzy dice and and baby-booties as popular car decorations. The signs express the driver’s opinions on everything from child safety (Baby-On-Board) to college football (Go Dawgs!). Almost every car you see has one, and those few social outcasts that don’t are usually trying to read others. There is no need to worry though, because as soon as the police get his mother-in-law out of the trunk, everything will return to normal, and people’s personal opinions will remain just that — personal. Fads and Fashion This year the students at Brandon High were really into the fashion scene. We saw everything from the tie-dyed jeans to the classic Coca-Cola shirts. Our girls, as always, looked very fashionable in their riding boots. These were worn with skirts, pants, and even jeans. The hair bows were also popular and came in every shape, size and color. Liz Claiborne was the hottest name in handbags this season. We also saw our guys enter the fashion world more than usual. Reebok hightops, Guess jeans rolled up, and Ray-Bans are just a few. Last, but not least, we saw everybody with a blue jean jacket. It seemed that almost every student had one, and wore it with it everything! 251 To the class of 1987, one thing will always stand out about their Senior year — school spirit. Bran- don High has seen this class grow from timid freshmen to a group with a proud sense of accomplishment. The Seniors have set an example for us all by winning the spirit stick in pep rallies more often than any Senior Spirit other class. Led by their cheerleaders Missy Baker, Jodie Howell, Staci Purvis, and Shannon Williams, the Seniors exhibited their usual high spirit in each of the pep rallies. Under the able leadership of Mrs. Joyce McGuire, the Senior class rallied together to win this year’s spirit chain competition by bringing out secretly hoarded funds and pulling through in the last day of competition. The Seniors were also generous in funding their blue ribbon homecoming float. Brandon High will never forget the infec- tious, winning spirit of the Senior Class of 1987. The annual staff this year was GREAT. Their long, hard hours of work and words of en- couragement really meant a lot to me. John, thanks for being patient with me and spending all that extra time with the computer. One of these days I’ll get it straight in my mind about PageVision and TypeVision. Lisa, you really handled your new position well, and 1 really ap- preciate it. Bobbie and Leigh Ann, you two have been the BEST assistant editors anyone could have had. Good luck next year! Mrs. Tucker, I don’t see how anyone could be so patient and understanding. And even when I made a mistake, you never criticized me; you were just always willing to help. The teachers deserve a big “THANKS,” too. Even though I know all of our questions about various school events and our deadline days must have driven them crazy at times, they never complained. Each one of us on the staff appreciates you more than you realize. Taylor Publishing Company and its representative, Ben Allen, have done much to help us accomplish our goal of putting together this yearbook. As I come to the end of my senior year and look back on everything that has filled it, I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride when I think of the 1986-87 BULLDOG. 1 hope that each one of you, as you look through your edition, will take pleasure in the memories of how you “pieced” your year together. 296 Taylor Publishing Company |lrts
