pressing Toward The Mark 2 — Introduction contents shooting for the top achieving our goals striving for more growing with us making the grade working our way up starting out paying our way summing it up 4 — Introduction Summer Fun Whether your summer was spent playing softball or working in Jitney Jungle ... waterskiing or attending band camp ... lifeguarding or hiking in the Colorado Rockies, there was a general attitude of reluctance as the doors of Brandon High were opened once again to start another year of school. Even though most of us were dragging our feet, things began hopping by the end of the first week. For all of you dreaming about waterskiing and dark tans, here’s good news — only 266 more days until summer vacation rolls around once again! Introduction — 7 8 — Introduction 10 — Introduction Teachers are people too! Most of us seldom think of our faculty as being anything but teachers. Even though many hours of their week are spent in the classroom, they do lead lives outside the walls of Brandon High School. Getting to know our faculty on a personal basis reveals the many strange and often interesting characteristics which distinguish each individual. If you still are not convinced, hang around after school one day and watch some of our “24-hour teachers” become the people they really are! 12 — Introduction Introduction — 13 14 — Introduction Introduction — 15 shooting for the top Features — 17 Mr. BHS Ken Ranager Energetic and involved, Ken Ranager has always been a leader, not only of his class, but of the whole student body. He has taken an active role in student govern- ment as class vice-president his freshman and junior years and president during his sophomore year. Ken could almost be called a hero among his peers as he has been elected a Beau and Class Favorite each of his high school years. This year, Ken has also been elected Most Popular, a member of the Hall of Fame, and of course Mr. BHS. Sports — with the courage and fortitude that it requires — has meant a great deal to Ken. A let- terman in football for three years and in baseball his junior year, he has also been an active member of the FCA. Miss BHS Leslie Conner Meeting each new challenge with a bright and eager spirit, Leslie Conner has forged her way to the top at BHS. Three short years ago Leslie was getting ac- quainted; however, by utilizing her many talents she has become a very important part of Brandon. Titles that followed her through each high school year were those of Class Beauty, Favorite, cheerleader, and Homecoming Maid, and this year she has received the honor of being named Homecoming Queen. In addition to beauty and personality, Leslie also has a gift for music, which she has put to use by singing in the chorus. She was a member of the girls’ sextet dur- ing her sophomore year and a part of the mixed quartet her sophomore and junior years. Leslie’s leadership and participation has shown in her active involvement with the Math Club, Beta Club, Outdoors Club, track, basketball, and Student Council. This year she was elected vice-president of the Student Council and Secretary of her class. She has also been selected to the Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Leslie attends First Baptist Church in Brandon. Nancy Savage Hall of Nancy Savage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Savage, earned a place in the Hall of Fame by demonstrating all of the qualities and characteristics which epitomize Brandon High School. Her role as president of student body, which enabled her to be an integral part of student life and activity, and her in- volvement in community activity have earned her the high honor of being named to the Who’s Who Among American High School Students. During her high school career, Nancy has been active in the flag corps, the chorus and the high school quartet. She is a member of the Crossgates United Methodist Church. 22 — Hall of Fame Ken Ranger Conscientious, cooperative, and consis- tent. These terms are characteristic of Ken Ranager, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Ranager. During his four years at BHS, Ken has given of himself to such an extent that his fellow students have chosen him as class of- ficer, a favorite, a beau, most popular, and finally Mr. BHS. Throughout his high school career Ken has been a member of the foot- ball team, the FCA, and the Outdoor Club. The conscientious manner in which he went about his work, and his excellent spirit of cooperation have earned him a well deserved place in the Hall of Fame. He is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Brandon. Amy Watson From freshman class secretary to annual staff editor, from freshman Student Council represen- tative to president of the Political Awareness Club, from a freshman flute player to the best dressed in Who's Who typifies the steady growth and pro- gress of Amy Watson, daughter of Mrs. Susan Watson. Diversification is the one word that best describes this young lady who has worn many hats during her high school career. Her active par- ticipation in the Bible Club, the Speech Club plus high academic achievement, and community ac- tivity have earned her the distinction of being named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students. In addition to her many school activities, Amy is involved in a number of church and community programs. She attends the First Baptist Church in Brandon. Fame Lacey Ashley Versatile Lacey Ashley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ashley, brings a long list of ac- complishments to the Hall of Fame. Her abili- ty in the fields of music, cheerleading, track, softball, club and student government par- ticipation, and her academic achievement are evidence of the versatility of this multi- talented senior. Always popular among her fellow students, Lacey has been selected a class beauty, homecoming maid, class favorite, and most likely to succeed. During her senior year she was chosen to be a Gayfer Girl. Her school and community in- volvement has earned her a place in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Lacey attends the First Baptist Church in Brandon where she is active in music and youth programs. No, it’s the “1981 Salute to Walt Disney!” This exciting week was carefully planned and prepared by the Student Council. Hard work and imagination paid off in some really unique and creative floats this year. Swinging away with first place was the Sophomore class with their interpretation of Jungle Book. With a little help from Winnie the Pooh, the Seniors created a “hunny” of a float and took Second place in the ratings. Whistling while they worked, the Juniors “dwarfed” the remaining competition and “Heigh-Hoed” their way to third place. Leslie Conner, escorted by Sean McCarthy, was crowned our 1981 Homecoming Queen. This has indeed been a memorable year. Many changes have occurred that, well, were good and bad. This year the staff became a multitude of people. This did help the pro- duction, but it also created a few problems. And, of course, we had our good times as well as the bad. This year was our first year to have a baby, a beautiful girl named Lee Ken- nedy. She’ll make a fine staff member when she grows up. We also had our moments of levity. Our explorations of cer- tain BHS facilities, the big words that came from babies’ mouths, and our own under- cover bunny were a few that will be remembered always. Joy, relief, self-accomplishment, trepidation, and anxiety can all be jumbled together in our minds. We reminisce about the fun times in high school, but that's all behind us now as we begin to struggle toward the goals we’ve set for ourselves. Expectations are high as we face some major crossroad decisions. Left, right or straight ahead — it’s never easy to tell. Jesus offers us direction in our lives if we’ll just take the time to listen: ‘‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not unto your own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 Seniors of 1982, you are the building blocks of tomorrow. Let’s build a future that’s worth living in. Our first foreign exchange student, Charlotte Schou Peterson, came to live amoung us from her native Denmark. “Charlie,” as referred to by her friends, was adopted by the Stribling family and began her senior year with the class of 1982. Her tall Scandanavian beauty and open spirit helped to make her a part of us immediately. She was eager to learn our customs and share with us the heritage of her Denmark. Her warm personality and inquisitive mind made her a natural for popularity at BHS. We loved her special cakes at Christmas, and the unique and appealing way in which she wanted to belong. Even though “Charlie” is back at her home, she will always be a part of the class of 1982. 127 “Riding high and flying free, We re the Class of ’83! The junior class has shown their loyalty to BHS through numerous ac- tivities. They have proved their true spirit by winning the spirit stick in several pep rallies. For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonged to me and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of my life flashed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed, that many times along the path of life, There was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life. This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it. Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, You would walk with me all the way, But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life There is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why in times when I needed you most you should leave me. The Lord replied, My precious child, I love you and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.” — Author unknown 147 Middle School — 149 150 — Middle School Administration and Faculty growing with us Middle School Administration and Faculty — Wilson Taylor 7th and 8th Grade Principal Nancy S. Under the guidance of their talented coaches, Johnny Thorton and Keith Cox, they acquired four victories, one loss and one tie. They were victorious over The Forest Bearcats, Yazoo City In- dians, Clinton Arrows and Vicksburg Gators. Though the Warren Central Vikings sailed to win the game, the Bulldogs recovered in a class tie with Pearl. The Junior High Bulldogs worked hard for their success. Practicing vigorously every day, the results of the season show- ed the effort. The 1981 season for the Eighth Grade Bulldogs, players and coaches, is a lot to be proud of. % 192 — Junior High Football The Seventh Grade Bulldogs spent the 81-82 year gaining experience. The Bulldogs were divided into 4 teams. The Red, Black, White, and Blue. They played each other every Thurs- day night in a “Round Robin” schedule. The Red team throughout was undefeated. The Seventh Grade Bulldogs only played one outside game, which was Warren Central. The team that traveled to Warren Central was the best of the players from each of the four divisions combined. Though the Bulldogs played vigorously, the odds weren’t in their favor. The coaches this year were Tommy Henry and Ronald Baer. Junior High Band — 199 imi The Middle School Student Council is composed of several outstanding students in the seventh and eighth grade. These students are selected because of their leader- ship qualities and willingness to serve. This year the Council participated in an American Education Week and a campus clean up project, both of which were very successful. Their sponsor this year was Mrs. Shepard. The officers of the Stu- dent Council are Michele Hoke (president), Rob Jay (vice- president), Lee Ann Madison (secretary treasurer), Brian McCarthy (reporter). 200 — Student Council The Junior High Beta Club is an honor society in which the students must maintain a scholastic average of 90 or above. Involvement in community and school affairs is characteristic of this organization. This year’s Christmas project was supplying food for a needy family. Money was raised through the sale of Valentine Carnations to purchase school equipment. Their sponsor was Mrs. Ferriss. The officers of the Beta Club are Rob Jay (president), Michele Hoke (vice-president), Susan Anderson (secretary treasurer), Tammie Launius (reporter).
