We have enjoyed your lakes and rivers, your hills and fields. Your beauty has pleased our senses and your resources have given us our livelihood. Whether we are native or adopted citizens, we will go on hailing thee l 3, . x, li our Northern Star. It was in this spirit that the staff chose the Minne- sota Centennial as the theme for the 1958 Brain- onian. We sincerely hope that the following pages will be a worthy tribute to our state. 1 wx: fizam. TP'f., . ,kys ' , to of ff ' --f ,.,,-, 'Ga Q 'mx ' 4 1. 'if if ig 5 i S 4 If 4 x Q n S f N Q1 5 . Fans cheer as the YYarriors trample Breckenridge for the Region Six champion- ship. By September 1957, we had progressed far from the group of perplexed and disorganized Sophomores that entered WVHS in the fall of 1954. Now, after three exciting years in high school, we are ready to go out into the world and endeavor to enrich society. Selected to lead us through our unforgetable Senior year were Bob Lindberg, president, Yvonne Woods, treasurer: and Carol Heikkenen, secretary. They were aided throughout the year by the Senior cabinet and the class advisers. Homecoming was successful insofar as the Warriors overcame Little Falls by a score of I9 to 6. Queen Yvonne YVoods led the parade whose theme was Swat the Flyers. Joy to the VVorld,' was used as an appropriate theme for the Senior Christmas Banquet. The class sang carols, and a short program was presented. Using a large map of the world as background, MC. Pete Herzog conducted the audienre Around the lNorld in Eighty Minutes. during the annual Student Council Variety Show. We were proud of Seniors Jim Brown, John Emerson, and Roger Moilanen, who were selected to Absent again, and a senior too! Later, they were honored at a banquet by the Student Council. The Senior Class play, The Curious Savage. presented on May 6. followed the Junior-Senior Prom on April 25. The theme. Stairway to the Stars was especially appreciated by the Seniors. who hz1cln't worl-:ed on it. The next big event in our last year was the Senior Tea on fwlay I3, given for Seniors and their mothers by the Juniors. Baccalaureate was held in the WHS gym on May 25. Commencement exercises were on May 29. The Ellis Club as in the past sponsored a party immediately following the commencement ceremonies. Thus the book closes on the graduating class of 1958. Even Valedietorians have to study for finals. Senior boys have played a big part in athletics throughout high school. Shirley Hughes takes a verbal beating from Kathie Gavin in the rehearsal for the Junior class play. was the name of the Junior class play directed by lNIrs. Frances Morgard. In the midst of February Diane Bajula and Gary Collette reigned over the Snow Hop. Later that same month Janet Norwood and Bob Clark were elected as our Girls' and Boys, State representatives. Busy people were these juniors, who were in almost all of the organizations from band and choir to clubs involving careers and sports. Studies took up much of our time. English and history were the two re- quired subjects although Pow-lVow and Brainonian juniors took journal- ism. Many other subjects were ofifered for our choice. H. Akre K. Anderson T. Anderson D. This year the main money-raisers were a play, carnival, and tag day. Aside from all the work the committee finds time to have social activities which included a party and picnic. Sonja Hyduke went to Norway last summer as our summer exchange student and lived with two families there. Ova Hepari, our foreign student from Istan- bul, Turkey, is living with Judy and Joanne Gethmann. Hlhile she is here, she is trying to further her ambition of becoming a concert pianist. Ova and Sonja, who were invited to Grand Marais to spend a week end along with two other foreign students, helped to promote and organize the American Field Service program there. Ova shows Sonja and Judy some of her treasures from home. These foreign students are staying in homes in Minnesota and rep- resent many different countries. They spent two days in Brainerd and are shown at one of the activities in which they participated - the coketail. THIRD ROW: J. Fitzpatrick, C. Chalberg, P. Sidney, D. Twombly J. Peterson. YVe were led throu h our first ear in VVashington High by our elected officers, who g Y ' were Rex Lentner, president, Dennis Thompson, vice-president, Kaye Hill, secretary: and Jeri Marshall, treasurer. YVe wasted no time and soon found ourselves involved in many organ- izations. Sports, YVHS publications, band, and choir attracted many of us. XVC were interested in classwork. The required subjects plus those of our own choosing took most of our time. Here we showed our worth and al- ways came up with our share of names on the honor roll. Our social activities, though few and far between, were highlights of the year. Our year climaxed in mid-April with a spring party. As the end of the year came near, we felt we had made the grade and were now really a part of this big exciting machine. Duluth Central The Hrst game of the season went wrong in the opening seconds for the Warriors as they failed to down the ball on the Duluth Central kickoff, and the Trojans took over on the B-3. The Trojans capitalized quickly on this War- rior mistake and scored on the first play. Brainerd never got back on its feet as Duluth went on to score three more touchdowns, winning 27-0. Sioux Falls Brainerd began to click as a football team as they journeyed to always toughu Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Although falling 33-6, the Warriors put up a tremendous fight, stopping almost all power plays through center. The Sioux Falls team made up for this, however, by returning two punts for touchdowns and passing for two others. The Shewmen scored against the Sioux Falls eleven for the first time in three years on a series of quick passes by reserve quarterback Jeff Smith. Heads or tails? Jimmy Brown is about to be spilled. St. Cloud Tech Until the very last minutes of the game, the Warriors looked as though they might pull this one through into a Brainerd victory. In the third canto, Bob Falls scored to make it 13-12 for the Warriors. Tech was not to be outdone, how- ever, and scored in the very last seconds to edge the invaders from Brainerd 19-13. Staples The slogan Whip the Warriorsi' was unfulfilled as the Warriors defeated the Staples Cardinals 13-6 in the Staples homecoming. Brained played an aggressive game with some fine power drives by fullback Steve Jelacic. The War- riors led 13-l0 in the third quarter while Staples only score came on a 70 yard punt return by Curt Hirshey in the final stanza. Little Falls Braint-rd's homecoming slogan Swat the Flyers' came true as the YVarriors romped over Little Falls 19-6. Although a powerful ball Club in the Central-Six Conference, the Flyers were not strong enough to overcome the highly spirited Warrior tcarn. Brainerd's only trouble came in the second quarter as the Little Falls passing sent them over for their only TD. This Warrior effort fails to come through as they are smeared by a whole host of tacklers egg' Good blocking provides a gain as Jerry Boileau runs around right end. Aitkin Although battling to a O-O deadlock at the end of the half, Aitkin proved too much for the Warriors in the second half. The Gobblers rolled over into pay dirt in both the third and fourth cantos, giving them a 14-O win over a much discouraged Warrior team. Crosby-Ironton After their loss to Aitkin, the Warriors bounced back to win the Little Brown Jug from C-I for the fourth year in a row. Leading 6-O as the second half started, the YVar- riors ran back the kick for 40 yards and Steve Jelacic toted the pigskin for 40 more as the Shewmen garnered their second TD. The XN'arriors then went on for two more TDsf pushing the Final score up to 26-0. A short gain comes to an abrupt end. This Warrior just barely gets by but then meets two more tacklers. Coloraine A highly spirited Wlarrior eleven gave powerful Greenway of Coloraine a bad scare, with a 13-13 score at the half. In the third stanza both teams scored again but Greenway converted to take the lead 20-19. The Warriors, held back by penalties and bad breaks, could not conquer the end zone again while Greenway went on to a 34-19 victory. De Lasalle The Warriors had a tough night as their flu-ridden team met mighty Dc LaSalle on muddy Roosevelt Field. Brai- nerd's only two touchdowns on a pass reception by Dick Avery and a long run by halfback Jerry Boileau, who turned in an exceptional performance in his last game. De LaSalle was never in trouble as they captured an early 13-0 lead and then went on to a 39-13 win. FIRST ROW: C 21 27 19 14 19 unior Varsity The Warrior B's,' coached by Dick Lagergren and Gene Hanson, had a very good season, as the record reveals, with four wins and one loss. While they lost their first game at the hands of St. Cloud, they won their last four games, making Little Falls, Staples, Crosby-Ironton, and Aitkin, their victims. The team was paced by some very good potential including sophomores Tom Lyscio and Jerry Faust, who also saw action on the UA squad. We've met another deadline! are the words of these seniors, Uheryl Kams- dell, Lois Holmes, Jeanne Johnson, Wayne Widmark, and Andy Bond. The Brainonian staff chose the theme Minnesota Centenniali' early in the 57 schoolyear. With these co-editors-in-chief, Sonja Hyduke and Bill Eckerly, and' with these advisers, Miss Irma Dell Adams and Mr. Edward Fox, associate editors and their staffs started working to meet their first deadline. Flashes were seen all around the school, and in the Brain- onian office there was a constant bustle. The 57-58 yearbook was being put together for the students of Washington High. In the fall the staff members had a party and picked out the cover for the new annual. Dummy pages were drawn up, arrangements made for pictures, write ups written, and finally the last touches were put to the pages. Many hopes of good results were put between the two covers. So the Brainonian office closed for another year with many memories left behind with the unveiling of the ,58 annual to be in August. In the spring of ,57, officers were chosen. Sue Gir- ard became president, Mary Imgrund, vice-president, Beryl Moulton, secretary, and Jerry Faust, treasurer. Homecoming was organized by the Council, crowning of the queen, the parade, and the dance. Later on in the year a 4'Switch-a-Ruew dance was put on. The girls had loads of fun asking the boys to the dance and paying their expenses for a few days. Other things done during the year were the adopting of a new foster child, Maria Cuzycki, from Poland, the putting on of the Honor Banquet, and the sponsoring of a clothing drive. The Vaudeville Show, sponsored by the Student Council, gave students of WHS a chance to display their talents. 5539 M H FOVRTII ROW: Isle. R, Collette. T. Lyscio, R. Austin. Al. Faust. C. Chalberg. The other main fund raiser was the annual magazine sale. Netting over 33.200 the choir deemed it a very successful drive. With the small fortune that the choir accumulated a trip was taken to Mr. Hansen's home town of Amery, lNisconsin. The trip was an exchange affair because the Brainerd choir entertained the Amery choir April 19 and 20. The Brainerd choir planned a party for them and they ended their stay with a concert before the student body. Brainerd's choir also sang at South- vitz, P. Bedal, C. Streiff, Kellett, C. Fodness, K. They sang in the new First Federal building and their voices were broadcast over downtown Brainerd as well as over KLIZ. The choir also sang in the con- ventional fashion, for the Rotary Club and the small choir entertained the Episcopal Guild. The exchange student, Ova Hepari also got into the act at the midwinter concert playing a duet with Sharon Nyhus. The choir proved its worth in the contest at l'Va- dena. All three choirs received A ratings which they well deserved. The year was brought to a close as the choir sang together for the last time at graduation.
