Q tex' 'Q i ' i ea W Mr. Bodeen, youehave been a person who has taught us many important things about life. As a teacher you taught us about the very basic functions in biology and guided us into our driving adventures. As a coach you gave us the fighting spirit to Win. You were the coach behind the scenes that helped make this yea.r's football team a winner when a loser was expected. You made us exceil to our fullest and stood behind the players when it was needed. As a friend you respected us and our opinions and you were never too busy to stop and talk. You had an easy going personality, but you disciplined us when necessary. We are proud to have had you as a teacher, coach, friend . . . Dedication 3 With great pride and joy, we, the 1981 Echo Staff, present to you the golden edition of the Braham High School Yearbook. This year's book is very special because we have incorporated some very special features, as you shall see. The theme of this year's book is Western and We have tried to carry that theme throughout our copy, which was a very difficult job, but my copywriters came through wonderfully. Please also take notice of the old pictures that we used on the division pages. I believe that history is an important part of this book being that this is our 50th edition. Also at this time I would like to thank the people that helped make this book a success. In the deepest appreciation, I thank my advisor, Pat McConnell, my co-editors, Mike Holmquist, Marcia Drost, Beth Anderson, and Karen Anderson, and the yearbook staff members for all their help. Also a special thanks to Carlson Photography, the Braham Journal, the Isanti County Historical Society, and Margo Gerdin. Please take time to enjoy this book because We took a great deal of time and effort in making it. Finally, we made it - we are known as the Senior Class of 1981. We had to go through thirteen years of silly little hardships like: Having to watch Mr. Rogers, learning to count, and having our finger paintings turn out brown. Oh, and those ABC's, we thought we'd never get through theml. We all waited until break time when we got our graham crackers and milk, every day! Then, we were bussed to Grasston . . . Good Old Grasston, where if you stepped over the red line on the tar you got in trouble. Although we never did! . Remember when we learned to write? We couldn't use regular paper, we were stuck with that funny brown paper with about four lines to a page. Imagine if we were to write a book! The year went by, and we were taught to read without using our finger to follow the words. Soon after that, it wasg if the small hand was on the three, and the big hand on two, what time would it be? Now it's much easier, all you have to do is press a button and the time is. told for you. Remember 9 x 9? It was the only one on the multiplication table anyone knew. There was one thing we never figured outg when it was our birthday why did we have to bring the treats? Learning to paint was much harder when we found out that we had to use a brush! Everyone was excited on the day we presented the play The Frog Prince. . We outgrew things like this and went on to be Big Middle Schoolersf' It wasn't as fun as we thought it was going to be! We had those gold cards that always seemed to get us in trouble. Then, there were the meetings with our advisors 15 minutes every day. Changing classes was great for the first two days, but after a while it got to be too much climbing up and down those stairs! In 8th grade we really had the teachers under controlg they thought they were going to take our field day away from us, but we had different ideas, although the only thing refusing to go to class got us was a tardy card! Another year went by and we were meant to feel like ants compared to elephants. By far, most of us were scared, but we made it through the year. That year was our first big homecoming game and dance. We all danced to King Pin. Most of us would have rather bowled than dance! The year went by very fast. We even lived through the hard stuff like Mr. C's algebra class, and the funny stuff like glueing Ziggy's foot to his chair! Remember the fun we had in biology classg collecting bugs and hiding dead frogs in the cupboards? Finally, the time we've all been waiting for - Our last year! As always - somebody else got the elevator and we got the shaft! fThanks Fahrnill We got out of school what we went for - an education. The year is at an end, and we've had some pretty fun times, but now we must go on with life and try to achieve the very best. Time is moving on and we won't have to wait for 3:10 again. It was the most beautiful thing Mr. Nelson had ever heard. From then on, the Howling Coyotes practiced and practiced for their spring concert. The Banditos would ride into Westview and rob the townspeople of their hard earned pesos. But the Banditos weren't all bad because they would return with cute, little stuffed animals and candy that was muy bien! All the pesos the Banditos collected went toward the wagon train trip down to Mexico. If they did well they would advance to the finals and possibly win a ribbon or certificate. At every football game they were seen selling cocoa and candy bars to all of the Cowboys and Indians who were watching the game. Each month the staff was invited to have coffee and Cornbread, graciously made by the FHA'ers. Later on in the year, the members were rounded-up for the district convention and then it was on to the state convention. We are sure that all members of FHA will make some lucky ranchers good housewives someday. FF Back in the old west they were called sodbusters or Future Farmers of America. Besides meeting once a month, these future farmers sold oranges and apples to help pay for a trip to Kansas City where their national convention was held. Here some FFA'ers spent four days going on tours, attending a rodeo, and meeting other sodbusters. During the year they competed in many contests and even found time to sell seeds in the spring. They are now waiting for next year when they will learn more about farming and how to run their own plot of land. 40 FHA, FFA 92 W Row 1: Susi Marcotte, Janice Ammerman, Donna Voss, Michelle Sutter, Mrs. Proza Ro' 2: Mary .Io Maslow, Sandy Dehkes, Mary Hanson, Patricia Rosen p Row 1: John Stigen, David Christinson, Jeff Anderson, Brian Franson, Chip Gerd David Provost Row 2: Mr. Cox, David Wright, Wendy Pangerl, Jeff Whichard, Tray Revak, Mike VanBeek, Billy Hanson, Jon Knapp, Glenn Senske . --- - . .Af Peeping Toms Ah! Auctioneer Bodeen called out, sold to the man in blue. When the auction was over, most of the townspeople went over to the saloon for a drink. Someone in the crowd yelled, Fahrni, give me a shot of whiskey! Looking over to see who said it, Mrs. Leaf and Ann Peterson, the neighborgood gossips, were very surprised to see Preacher Heise drinking whiskey. They were so stunned, they hurridly went out the door. Nelson started playing the piano, while Legs McConnell and Wiggles Swenson came on the stage to entertain the men. Wesley, the town drunk, staggered into the saloon shouting Jesse James Knudtson is coming to town! Everyone got excited and ran out into the street. Bounty Hunter Skarsten came riding through town searching for Jesse. He went to notify Sheriff Nelson that Jesse had just robbed the Braham bank and was heading for Westview. Suddenly, Banker Cox came running down the street yelling, My bank has been robbed, and Jesse has teller Londgren as a hostage! They hustled up and down the courts and amazed their opponents with their screens and the pick and roll. Although Braham suffered many injuries this year, they still did a good job. The team is looklng forward to an even better year in '82. Our bandits were wildly swinging at the little white ball. Were they out of practice or just trying to hit the coach? As the first match approached, the golfers looked forward to showing off their skills. They'd load into a covered wagon and be off to the Purple Hawk golf course to play in the woods-or was that with the woods ? The team did a lot of puttsing around, but finally got the iron out and began teeing off. The ball would move gracefully down the fairway, providing it wasn't caught in a sandtrap or lost in a pond. Our pros would then hit the ball up to the green where it fell into what looked like a gopher hole. My what an unusual sport'?! Well, however unusual, our teams were great on the golf course. Golf 73 As the dust settled, one of the Catchy Cowgirls, made another homerun. The team cheered as another cowgirl got up to bat. The townspeople heard a crack as the bat hit the ball. The cowgirl rounded first and was on her way to second as the flyball was caught. This made three outs. It was the bottom of the ninth inning and the Catchy CoWgirls were out in the field. They were amazing- pitching balls, striking the other team out, catching flies- the works! The game ended and the Catchy Cowgirls pulled another one through with the help of Coach Staples. As spring came about on the rolling plains of the mighty Westview Ranch, the baseball team came out of hibernation for another season. When the season came, Mr. Kaunonen seemed to get overly excited, for he was the rancher that organized the team of steers. Something else amazing happened also - was it possible for his voice to change from one monotonous tone to two monotonous tones?l?! Our team was seen wildly ripping the cover off the ball as they hit singles, doubles, triples, and home runs. The steers slaughtered the opposing teams as it was rare for them to , ever miss a catch and their base running was very well done. Yes, we at the Westview Ranch can be very proud of our baseball steers. 74 Softball And Baseball ,, , Catchy Cowgirls Row 1: Melanie Bodin, Kathy White, LoAnn Burkstrand, Robbie Timm, Lisa Bock, Tammy Fenner Row 2: Sandy Zarecki, Tammi Strelow, Linda Ernst, Renee Hagfors, Kathy West, Jodi Denny, Carol Auger, Connie Nordby, Zoe Freeman Row 3: Heidi Randall, Mary Campbell, Barb Brown, Jonelle Jamma, Marlys Carlson, Betty Lakeberg, Bonni Hasser, Jenny Willias, Tracy Seiffert Row 4: Tammy Paulson, Patricia Lysdahl, Barb Falk, Lisa Boomgaarden, Angela Westley, Connie Schmakel, Debra Maxwell, Robyn Turchi, Sarah Glidden, Raeann Hagfors, Coach Staples Batting Broncos Row 1: Dale Grundberg, Shawn Nelson, Greg Kranz, Tim Hasser, Scott Johnson Row 2: Jeff Anderson, Todd Potrament, Max Eng, Greg Hunt, Bryan Peterson, Mark Carlson, Todd Turnquist Ready set ANG and they're off, aster than a speeding bullet, able to jump hurdles at a single bound! After all the practice and hard work it came time for the track roundup. As the girls loaded the covered wagon there was only praying, nailbiting, and of course chow time . Many times Marshall Pearson tried to stop our tracksters from speeding, but they were too fast for him. Finally he gave up and just decided to watch the team. This he found, was much more exciting than chasing them. The coach explained all the track events to the marshall. He found out that there were events where you could gallop for 220, 440, and 880 yards. There were also events for posses of four people, not to mention all the events held in the pasture area. We sure agree with the marshall that our boys did a fine job this year. V . ', .l-Iss ni n- - I . , X 1 xiii. s Track 75 7 H185 i K 9 s i 'I Our Mighty Bombers 76 Athl T. P mmm: M -. Auctioneer Bodeen sold our senior herd of football players and cheerleaders to the townspeople. On Monday the slaves and their masters participated in the slave games while everyone dressed down for Drip Day. Tuesday was Fifties Day when all the men dressed up as Elvis Presley and the women as Marilyn Monroe. The winners of the contest were Mr. Bodeen and Connie Nordby. The excitement came on Wednesday when all of the guys dressed as girls, and the girls as guys. At the end of the day everyone was rounded up and brought out to the South pasture where the candidate games were held. The student council robbed chicken coops to get enough eggs for the egg toss. It was a change to see everyone dressed up on Thursday. The exciting evening began with a welcome from the M.C.'s, Bonnie and Brad. The Spanish Club started out with the first skit Some Help You Are . The Swing Choir continued with a more serious note by singing Time Is My Friend . The festivities continued with the skit, 82 Homecoming The Phantom Diner by student council, and the AFS club flew in with The Propellers . What a great performance! Speaking of great performances, Sharon Peterson and Laura Holmer entertained the audience by singing Songbird . The new faculty skit was really gone , but the highlight of the evening was the crowning of the King and Queen, Mark Bacon and Vicki Lindquist. 1979 King Brad and Queen Mari were present to carry out the honors. Everyone trotted on down to the bonfire for a pepfest where Shannon Foote threw in a Princeton Football player . The Braham herd didn't feel that burning them was enough so they trampeled them 36-8 in Friday's football game. The dance was a big success and the townspeople liked the music by Centre Stage. All of the townspeople had so much fun during Homecoming week it was hard to get back to the old routine. Homecoming 83 The Importance Gf Being Earnest Memory . . . is the diary that we all carry about with us, unless of course we have these pictures to help remind us. But where is Bunbury? Didn't anyone get a picture of1'Bunbury? I remember him as being one of the most important characters of the play. CWe could never have gone on Without him.J Who would have filled in all those little silences when Cecily was trying to speak and Gwendolen was preserving a dignified silence? Could anyone but Bunbury have found a black leather wicker hand bag? Who would have given Merriman his cues or found cucumber sandwiches for Lane. Yes, my friends, it was Bunbury who wrote Chasuble's one and only sermon, it was Bunbury who opened pews for Miss Prism, and it was Bunbury who saved poor innocent Algernon from that old witch Aunt Augusta. So don't worry Jack, you and a lot of other babies in this world can rest assured that Bunbury is watching over The Importance of Being Earnest. an 'za an T? 84 Fall Play Row 1: Sandy Dehkes, Julie Peterson Row 2: Deb Athey, Teresa VanBeek Row 3: Do Mitchell, Tim Tomlinson, Vern Heise, Mary .lo Maslow, Mike Holmquist, Brad Lor Fred Hayes I Siiisis I 9 gg . .E,g ,,.,,,.,..,,.,.-Q0-f - --H-' aiximk w Row 1: Kathy White, LoAnn Burkstrand, Melanie Bodin, Dixie Jones Row 2: Mike Anderson, Brian Anderson, Lisa Boomgaarden, Dalal Hajarat, Debbie Peterson, Lori Boomgaarden S is 1 if. They roamed the halls showing them off to all j of the townspeople. Some were lucky A enough to get one of the junior rings! Shortly after, it was time to think about prom. Ma Proza got them out selling candles. When prom finally came, the juniors were staying after every night to decorate. They ruled the middle school with an iron hand. They thought they were the best with their middle school band. Then time passed to another year. They became freshmen and that meant fear. They held their own and had some fun. They even smarted off better than anyone. When they were chased they ran like steers. That helped them get over their many fears. If they get too smart, they'll get a branding. Then they'll always end up standing. -6 .slr W .
