MR. CHARLES H. CHEWNING Superintendent Durham County Schools Mr. Charles H. Chewning became the superintendent ofthe Durham Coun- ty Schools in September, l952. He has endeared himself to students and faculty members alike with the calm and sincere manner in which he accom- plishes his various administrative tasks. Some of his activities include-working with architects on plans for the new Northern and Southern High Schools, planning the equipment for these new buildings, working with the Board of Education, the County Commission- ers, the Citizens' Committee, the P. T. A.'s, numerous teacher-groups, the principals, the supervisors, and many individual students and patrons of the schools-in order to make Durham County Schools bigger and better. Despite these and other important duties, Mr. Chewning is never too busy for the personal touch, such as- the letter of congratulations to the student who has won some special honor. Never has one worked more tirelessly to secure well-qualified personnel, an adequate curriculum, and sufficient funds to meet the needs of the stu- dents.
