CLASS HISTORY On the sixth day of September, 1943, fifty-four small, frightened children entered the portals of learn- ing at Hope Valley School. As wide-eyed and tearful first graders, we met our teacher, Mrs. Lillian Umstead. Soon our tears were dry and we began to learn to read and write under her careful guidance. Of the fifty-four small scholars that started out only seven re- main: Ronald Aldridge, Frank Gunter, Gail Rigsbee, Ruth Matthews, Betty Knowles, Al Ripley, and Rose Marie Kearney. We have spent twelve eventful and unforgettable years together. Of course, all of us will remember buzzing and flying around in our bee and butterfly costumes on May Day. This was the year that the first important mark was made on the blue- print of our lives. Tears marred our blueprint in the second grade because we, as a group, were divided. Half of us went to Mrs. Snipes' room and the other half to Mrs. Darnell's room. Margaret Hill, Loretta Neal, and Bobby Blackwood ioined our group in the second grade. Miss Doris Lynn, after trying very hard, finally taught the multiplication tables to her forty-six third grade students. Our blueprint began to take real shape because this was the year we learned to write. Darrell McKinley entered the third grade with us. All of us remember Mrs. Barrett and the fourth grade. One of her obiectives was to teach us about the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. I think all of us will remember that you iust did not chew gum in her room. FIFTH GRADE! This was the year we really thought we were growing up, and so was our blueprint. Mrs. Barbour was our teacher. Her love for sports and her leadership made the fifth grade a pleasant one. Donald Eubanks and Jimmy Jones became members of our class. Under the careful supervision of Mrs. Ellen Ward in the sixth grade, we learned how to give oral book reports and learned many important facts about An- cient History. Bobby Smith ioined our happy band that year. ln the seventh grade, we learned how to play softball and Bow, Bow, Oh Belinda. We shall never forget Mrs. Vonnie Rhyne who discovered our dif- ferent talents and gave us an opportunity to develop them. We were ioined in the seventh grade by Barbara Mize and Peggy Willoughby. Mrs. Zenna Harris and the eighth grade! That year the girls began to wear lipstick and the boys began to notice the girls. All of us were excited about changing classes and having different teachers. Robert Gwaltney entered the eighth grade with us. The ninth grade came and we crossed a new threshold to high school proper. We were tagged as Green Freshmen on initiation day-and green we were. Fun and excitement marked our Freshman year with Mrs. Betsy Alston, our teacher. Barbara Hill and Percy Mclamb ioined us in the ninth grade. Bugs, birds and frogs mark our memory for our Sophomore year with Mrs. Marion Hall. That year there were many parties and dances to mark another stage in our high school development. We increased our school family when Thomas Franklin and Darrell Kennedy joined us. In the eleventh year, with Mrs. Joan O'Brien as our teacher, we did much hard work, but we had some- enioyment, as well. Our work really began with the Halloween Carnival, progressed to the Junior Play, and then to the selling of magazines, it was climaxed with the beautiful and unforgettable Junior-Senior Ban- quet. Our class enioyed a trip to White Lake that year. There will always be a portrait hanging in our memories of our devoted teacher, Mrs. Joan O'Brien, who under- stood our many needs. Joan Fullwood, Bobby Mock, Ann Riley, Frances Adcock, Glenn McFarland, and Thomas Willoughby iofned our group in the eleventh grade. We are Seniors now and the blueprint of our high school life is about completed. We shall soon face the tasks of adult life and will begin a new adult blueprint. This year was marked by the presentation of our Senior Play, The Sixth Key. We enioyed an- other Junior-Senior Banquet and a class trip. Following the busy Spring season our Class Day came, and then the highlight of them all-Graduation Day with navy caps and gowns and then, our diplomas. Gerald Hoke, E. J. Holt, Barbara Melton, Nancy Mangum, Joan Hartsell, Pat Ray, and Jean Corbin ioined us in the twelfth grade. As we leave Hope Valley High School we extend our appreciation to Mr. Vincent for his help. To Mrs. Dorothy Randall, our senior teacher, we express ap- preciation for her kindness and understanding. To Mrs. Zenna Harris, Mrs. Joan O'Brien, Mrs. Sandra Zucker- man, Mrs. Dottie Earp, and Mrs. Virginia Teets goes our appreciation for their patience and guidance. We leave our thanks to our parents and those in the Hope Valley Community who have helped make our twelve years of growth and development possible. ROSE MARIE KEARNEY, Historian
