Class meetings, marching into assembly, long talks about class trips, selling every- thing under the sun, our beautiful rings arriving, the rush of studying for exams, electing senfor superlotfves-these are all memories to retain. Freshman initiation week caused many a chuckle, and the Freshmen wondered how the Seniors could be so cruel. Our Christmas party was an enioyable highlight of the first semester. Many Seniors worked selling ods and organizing the annual, After much deliberation we chose, Curtain Going Up for our senior play. The .lunior-Senior was one of the most enioyable events of the year. At las-t, the day that we had dreamed of had arrived-we were actually planning our graduation exercises, ln one of our quiet moments, we realized that although we were happy to be graduating, we were sad to be leaving school and our good friends here. We had a very large class and, for the first time, Bethesda had four freshman home rooms with Miss Brogden, Mr. Smith, Mr. Farrow, and Mrs. David- son, as our teachers. Being in high school was quite a new experience, but the initiation week made us feel at home in our new surroundings. Then came the big day for our physical examinations at the Health Department. We got back to school at lunch time but no one seemed to be hungry. I wonder if the hotdogs we had in town had anything to do with that. We enioyed our health classes this year be- cause we had an opportunity to go out and play ball. This was much better than sitting in class. We had a very nice trip to Pullen Park, especially since our grade parents supplied us with all the food we could eat. We managed to pull through algebra and science and to go on to the tenth grade with Mr. Davis and Mrs. Newton as our teachers. By this time, we were attending the county football and basketball games and some of our boys were already on the teams, This year was the beginning of having Bethesda cheerleaders, and we had many of our girls on the squad. Our Bethesda basketball team, coached by Mr. Davis, was the county champion. We were very proud of our boys because they worked hard for this honor. We had an interesting algebra ll class, and we shall never forget the stu- dents taking a test on a special kind of paper. As Juniors, our home room teachers were Miss Huey and Mrs. Lemos. At last we felt important. We can look back on this year with pride because o' our successful play, Zeke and Daisy, directed by gEseARCt'l HISTCRY Miss Huey. We had a wonderful time giving the play and especially the hot dogs we ate back stage after the performances. All the play cast enjoyed a very nice dinner at Miss Huey's home in Elon one Sunday. We also enioyed our ride down there and back. We enjoyed working on the Hawaiian banquet which included making hula girls, grass huts, and palm trees. When we finished the decorations we wer proud of the results, especially when our guests complimented us on them. Bot e very h of these were sig- nificant achievements. We were guests of the seniors for a return party at Lake Mirl. At last the time had come. In l953 we were full- fledged seniors. We have come to find out that being a senior is not all a bed of roses as we had thought. Instead, we find ourselves slaving over soci- ology papers, vocabulary notebooks, office practice sets, shorthand brief forms, geometry theorems, and French verb forms. Making money for the senior trip was hard work, but we had fun making brunswick stew and selling different things. Our play, Curtain Going Up, directed by Miss Hawks, worked us at the time, but we do not regret a single minute of the time that we spent on it. We owe a great deal of thanks to our senior sponsors, Mrs. Newton and Mrs. Webb, who have worked very hard for us this year. The clock hands show us that our time at school is nearly gone. We realize at times we could have used our days to better advantage, but we sin- cerely believe that our years spent here have con- tributed immensely to insuring a better future for each of us. That's what each of us said as we entered school in the tall of 1953. Little did we know the experiences to follow throughout the year. We had, for ten years, looked forward to this day when we would be iuniors, but we had never anticipated the thrill it would really be . . . This year each of us has gained so many happy memories. There was our Junior Play, Ann, of Green Gables. . . . Oh, how we all remember how we enioyed the Senior boys so-called transportation committee, and late play practices. Ah, yes, and selling ads for the back at our programs. Thaf was lun as well as very beneficial to the class. Then came our magazine sale, those ice capade tickets, certainly helped our top best sellers spend an enioyable evening. Better, however, than that was the money our class earned which helped us greatly. More Sales! . . . It you had visited the home ol any ot our Juniors or come to school you would have been practically lorced to buy a 4Oc box ot candy-if not two or three boxes. We finally reached our goal of selling 1,000 boxes and greeted the S100 profit. Ah, but at last the big event came-our .lunior-Senior Banquet. The fun we shared with our fellow classmates made us feel good. We realize our work has not been in vain, for the Seniors enioyed themselves. Each one of us gained much this year to enrich our lives. This is certainly one year we will remember. Our teachers who helped us along our way in the seventh and eighth grades were: Mrs. Crabtree, Mrs. Gaskins, and Mrs. l-lill. During these two years we lost Carl Roberts, Ralph Ellis, Alma Sharon, leon Johnson, Ruben Brann, Floyd Wilkins, l. W. Carden, Paul larry, Joyce Pittman, Frank Worsham, Bobby Ellis, and Earl Ramsey. These little time candles now had burned out and THE MARCH a larger one began burning for us. During our Freshman year our homeroom teacher was Miss Umstead, who helped us get adiusted to high school life. Mr. Bass was our principal. Two bands had burned out and we were in our Sophomore year. During this year we had many parties and wiener roasts. Mrs. Chestnut was our homeroom teacher and Mr. Anderson was our princi- pal. As the time candles grew dimmer, we found our- selves as iolly Juniors. Time did not stand still lor us in this year because we found ourselves in a whirl of . I---mm, 4 OF TIME activities vvhich included June Fever, Junior-Senior Banquet, receiving our class rings and many parties. Our homeroom teacher, Miss Hunter, and our coach, Mr. Rice, who understood energetic young people, planned many entertaining outside activities for us. We are novv dignified Seniors, ready to take our places among the citizens of our respective communi- ties. This year has included many activities also, such as Murder Mansion, Junior-Senior Banquet, trip to Washington, parties, and field trips. Miss Wilkins, our homeroom teacher, has helped us during this year in every way possible. We wish also to thank the remainder ot the teachers and our principal, Mr. Spear, vvho have helped us during our high school years. Our time candle has slowly but surely fliclcered out and we, the class of '54, happily, yet sadly, comptete our work in Mangum l-lfgh School. We wish to recom- mend to the remaining and future students to take care of the minutes, for the hours will take care of themselves, and with Byron remember: The good old times-all times when old are good -are gone. This was the beginning of OL long education. For the first three years we studied simple reading writing, and arithmetac. Albert Brinkley transferred from another schoc to ours that year. As we entered the fourth grade we began to study history, whic we all dreaded, and also found ourselves writing such themes as Wl' I Must Not Chew Gum in School. This year is well remembered. As we entered the fifth grade, we began to feel as though we wer grown. Mrs. Rhyne taught us how to sing that year. Ann Riley ioine us. The sixth grade brought forth book reports and geography. TI boys who were eligible ioined the Safety Patrol. Ronnie Peele ioined oi class that year. Alas, the seventh grade and Mrs. Rhyne again. That year our cla practically split in half. Many of our classmates left us to enter ci schools. The eighth grade brought us two girls, Jane Davis and Jeannet Isaacs. That was the year we began to change classes like the hig school. The girls also began to wear lipstick and they thought it wi grand. WMM5 ii 'MW ZW WSM1.. .-..,. - ' gg. .j, if tt Www J wifi RECALL The ninth grade consisted of initiation and being marked as Green Freshmen. We didn't mind that so much, especially with Mr. Smith as our teacher. Paul Wheeler entered our class that year. The tenth grade was mostly remembered as one of waiting to :ecome a Junior. That year Carolyn Stegall came to our school. Our Junior year turned out to be the one with the most fun in it. The Halloween Carnival and the Junior-Senior Prom took much of our time. The Junior play will also be alive in our memories for a good Nhile. That year three more students ioined us. They were Loyd Winn, Eugene Elliott, and Rita Kennedy. And, finally at last, we are Seniors. Four people have ioined us this fear. They are Pat Skleris, Edna Atwell, Themis Kountis, and Jimmy Saney. The ones who have been together for twelve years are Shirley Starrett, Evelyn Hyatt, Frances Nichols, Joyce Elliott, Rosa Belle Pender- graph, Sonny Kearney, and Tommy Smith. Our last year at Hope Valley will never be forgotten. With our Senior play and plans for our trip to Washington under way, we are horoughly enioying this year. Pretty soon we will be wearing our caps md gowns and receiving our diplomas. With the help of Mr. Vincent ind our many teachers, we have finally reached the goal we set for Jurselves some twelve years ago. We shall always cherish the mem- Jries of our many friends at Hope Valley and the wonderful times we iave all had.
