SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE This year marks fifty years of progress in educa- tion for the Brady community. It is significant that this year likewise sees the opening of a new school plant. The students of the Brady School owe a debt to the adult citizens who have made this new school possible. This debt can be repaid in only one way. That is to improve society and to provide the tools for future generations to improve their way of life. Great men through the ages have set forth stand- ards for a good society. However, nearly all of these standards can be covered in two simple rules; do good and avoid evil. May your life make a contribution to society.

Every good book is affection- ately dedicated to someone whom the staff wishes to publicly honor. Therefore, we. the Annual Staff of the 1960 Bulldog, would like to dedicate this annual to Mr. Arthur Solberg, who gave much time and effort to the organization of the Brady Bands.

FIFTY YEARS OF PROGRESS A History of Education in Brady In 1908 homesteaders began to file upon the land in the vicinity of Brady. This con- tinued through the year 1909-1910. The question of educating the children became para- mount. Thus it was that School District No. 19 was organized. In the spring of 1910 a session of school lasting some six weeks was held in a small frame building which later was moved and became a residence. Seats and desks were of the double type, blackboards were surfaced lumber appropriately painted, and a table served as the teacher's desk. Pupils attending were Mrs. Christmas Marriott Stenhjem, Mrs. Ber- nice Marriott Carver, Mrs. Blanche Marriott Hill, Mrs. Lucy McNeely Kincaid, Mrs. Mary McNeely Kruger, Mrs. Genevieve Ballard Sharp, Gale Ballard, Judson Landon, Mrs. Emma Landon Joseph, and Charlotte Benson. Miss Jean Fluto taught this school. The first schoolhouse to be built by the trustees was a one-room structure located west of the present school. Miss Mabel Hovey taught this school. Some twenty pupils were en- rolled. Increases in the enrollment due to more settlers compelled the immediate construction of a larger school building so that late in the year. 1911, a contract was let for a two-room building. Mr. T. O. Larson of Choteau gave the block of ground upon which the building was erected. In 1916 Mr. Edwin Melvin was employed as the school's first principal. In that year a contract was let to erect a brick building. To this building was attached the original wood- en building to be used as a gym. In 1915 Brady High School was organized offering one year of study. The next year the sophomore course was added and Brady had a two year high school. In 1929 Brady High School graduated her first four year class which included Paul Armstrong, Clifford Curtis, Mrs. Hazel Berland Castle, Myrtle Bowman, Lyle Peniz, Bernal Leary, Angus Rose, Mrs. Rose Steele, and Mrs. Kathryn Ward Oien. In 1928 the trustees added a new section to the old building to house the high school. At this time they also constructed a separate wooden gym. These buildings served the Brady Community as their school until 1959. In September, 1959, the students moved into a new school building which included a jiew large gym. This building was constructed to hold all students in grades one through twelve and was designed to take care of the needs of the community for many years to come-.
