THE BULLDOG 1960 Presented by The Senior Class of Brady High School Brady, Montana Every good book is affection- ately dedicated to someone whom the staff wishes to publicly honor. Therefore, we. the Annual Staff of the 1960 Bulldog, would like to dedicate this annual to Mr. Arthur Solberg, who gave much time and effort to the organization of the Brady Bands. SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE This year marks fifty years of progress in educa- tion for the Brady community. It is significant that this year likewise sees the opening of a new school plant. The students of the Brady School owe a debt to the adult citizens who have made this new school possible. This debt can be repaid in only one way. That is to improve society and to provide the tools for future generations to improve their way of life. Great men through the ages have set forth stand- ards for a good society. However, nearly all of these standards can be covered in two simple rules; do good and avoid evil. May your life make a contribution to society. FIFTY YEARS OF PROGRESS A History of Education in Brady In 1908 homesteaders began to file upon the land in the vicinity of Brady. This con- tinued through the year 1909-1910. The question of educating the children became para- mount. Thus it was that School District No. 19 was organized. In the spring of 1910 a session of school lasting some six weeks was held in a small frame building which later was moved and became a residence. Seats and desks were of the double type, blackboards were surfaced lumber appropriately painted, and a table served as the teacher's desk. Pupils attending were Mrs. Christmas Marriott Stenhjem, Mrs. Ber- nice Marriott Carver, Mrs. Blanche Marriott Hill, Mrs. Lucy McNeely Kincaid, Mrs. Mary McNeely Kruger, Mrs. Genevieve Ballard Sharp, Gale Ballard, Judson Landon, Mrs. Emma Landon Joseph, and Charlotte Benson. Miss Jean Fluto taught this school. The first schoolhouse to be built by the trustees was a one-room structure located west of the present school. Miss Mabel Hovey taught this school. Some twenty pupils were en- rolled. Increases in the enrollment due to more settlers compelled the immediate construction of a larger school building so that late in the year. 1911, a contract was let for a two-room building. Mr. T. O. Larson of Choteau gave the block of ground upon which the building was erected. In 1916 Mr. Edwin Melvin was employed as the school's first principal. In that year a contract was let to erect a brick building. To this building was attached the original wood- en building to be used as a gym. In 1915 Brady High School was organized offering one year of study. The next year the sophomore course was added and Brady had a two year high school. In 1929 Brady High School graduated her first four year class which included Paul Armstrong, Clifford Curtis, Mrs. Hazel Berland Castle, Myrtle Bowman, Lyle Peniz, Bernal Leary, Angus Rose, Mrs. Rose Steele, and Mrs. Kathryn Ward Oien. In 1928 the trustees added a new section to the old building to house the high school. At this time they also constructed a separate wooden gym. These buildings served the Brady Community as their school until 1959. In September, 1959, the students moved into a new school building which included a jiew large gym. This building was constructed to hold all students in grades one through twelve and was designed to take care of the needs of the community for many years to come-. AUDREY SEVERSON Parents, Teachers and Friends The ceremony this evening concludes twelve years of education for the class of 1960. I wish to extend to you a fond farewell from our class. In parting I wish to thank the many people who have helped us through high school. To Our Parents; I wish to extend thanks for their help and guid- ance through school and their advice although at times we did not follow it. To The Faculty; We wish to extend our thanks for their patience, tolerance, and assistance in solving the many problems that we en- countered. And To Our Many Friends In The Brady Community; we wish to thank them for the new school which we have enjoyed for the past year. We wish to thank them for their fine support of our extracurric- ular activities. In conclusion I speak for the whole class when I say that we will forever have fond memories of Brady High School. THANK YOU DON JERMUNSON CLASS PRESIDENT Sponsored by M T IMPLEMENT, Brady CLASS PROPHECY After ten years the class of '60 held a reunion at the home of an old classmate, Nancy Hodgson, who is now married and living east of Conrad on a prosperous wheat farm. She is the proud mother of four fine children. The first to arrive was Ron McCauley and his wife. They have just purchased a coyote farm after Ron finished his Navy Career. The next to arrive was Don Jermunson. He is doing very well on his farm near Brady. He is married and has a family of four. Everyone was in the process of getting acquainted all over again when Ray Hofland walked in. Ray has just settled down to farming after winning the Indianapolis 500. While everyone was congratulating Ray on his victory, Professor Lyla Dyer arrived. She has her Doctors Degree in Science and is teaching at Columbia University. Following Lyla came Audrey Severson. She is now living a life of luxury with her millionaire husband. They are living in California. Nancy was just beginning to serve cocktails when Dick Lenz entered. Dick is now a professional painter working for the Roman Embassy. The next to arrive was Sharon Mundy. Sharon is a Registered Nurse and is now employed at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester. About that time we were all drawn to the window by a terrible racket outside. It was Shirley Gollehon, racking the pipes of her souped up Olds. Shirley is the private secretary for the President of General Motors. Then came Mike Beatty who is now making millions as a big engineer. He farms near Brady for a pastime. The last but by all means not the least was Magdeline Severson who drove up in her Cadillac. She struck oil on some of her land. With all the members of the class of '60 being present the reunion got underway with lots of reminiscing of good old B . H. S . CLASS HISTORY On a bright and sunny day in September of 1956, the doors of Brady High School were opened wide to admit eleven green Freshmen. Though we had entered high school, we were made to feel that full membership must await our initiation that the Sopho- mores had in store for us. Returning to school the following year our class was as large as ever and we were determined to make the grade as Sophomores. During our Junior year we still kept our faith in good old Brady High School. A Christmas Ball was held and was quite successful. Now the year of 1960 has come and our class consists of eleven dignified up-coming Seniors. The first semester Ronnie Fitzgerald left our class but was replaced by another stu- dent, Ron McCauley, who was transferred from Big Timber. We have come but a portion of the way on life's journey, yet what we have been taught by our teachers will help us as we go forth to take our places in the world. Sponsored by CONRAD CLEANERS, Conrad CLASS WILL We, the senior class of nineteen hundred and sixty; being of unstable mind, af- flicted with undying hatred of knowledge, and great haste to leave this vale of tears, do hereby dispose of all our worldly goods in the following manner: ARTICLE I We leave to our boring, uninteresting, but beloved teachers what little knowledge we managed to absorb during our four years of high school. We're sure that it is so minute that we won't miss it. ARTICLE II We bequeath to the juniors all of our poor grades. We do not want to be burdened with these at college. Upon the sophomore class we bestow our little bookworms which crawled in and out of our books, and yet were none the wiser. We leave what dignity we have, though it is really not excessive, to the freshmen who, alas! have none. ARTICLE III Sharon Mundy leaves her ability to blush easily to anyone who will take it. Ray Hofland bequeaths his arguing ability to Barry Barrington. Good luck, Barry! Richard Lenz leaves his four years of high school without studying to Merle Pauli. We hope you get your diploma too, Merle. Magdeline Severson leaves to the sophomore girls her ability to be a good kid. Shirley Gollehon bestows upon Bonnie and Brenda her ability to discontinue her silliness. Audrey Severson leaves her determined ways to turn up the heater to all the cold- blooded students of Brady High. Ronald McCauley wills his athletic ability to Gordon Schlepp. Donald Jermunson leaves to Gary Gollehon his winning way with girls. Lyla Dyer bequeaths her annual editor ability to anybody who has time enough to take it. Nancy Hodgson leaves to Bonnie Hofland her ability to get a diamond ring. From a boy, that is. Mike Beatty leaves his ability to bother chemistry teachers to Harold Cyr. Hereunto we have set our honorable hands and seals, knowing all the provisions herein proclaimed are absolutely unalterable and undissolvable by all mortal and im- mortal beings. 4k, 11 Sponsored by PETE’S DRIVE INN, Great Falls SENIOR CLOSE-UPS NAME FAVORITE SONG AMBITION PET FOOD PEEVE Don Pizza La Montana To Make a Senior Jermunson Million Girls Sharon French Somebody’s Nurse Certain Mundy Fries Fool Boys Mike Pizza Cathy’s Be a Chemistry Beatty Clown Millionaire Teachers Nancy Lobster Night Mist Over Get Married Senior Hodgson Highway 2 Boys Shirley Lobster Cathy’s Secretary Certain Gollehon Clown Boys Lyla Pizza Sixteen Science Boys Who Dyer Reasons Teacher Argue Ron Shrimp You’ll Have to Join the Big McCauley Go Navy Brother Audrey Fried Good-Night Make Cold Severson Chicken Mr. Sun Money Weather Dick Swiss Cathy's Be a Mumps and Lenz Steak Clown Painter Measles Ray Shrimp Stuck on You No Ambition Anti- Hofland Customizers Magdeline Shrimp That’s Why I’m Take It Lower Severson Walking Easy Classmen Sponsored by B B GROCERY, Dutton SHARILYN BARTSCH President BONNIE HOFLAND Vice President MARGARET BRITTON Secretary HAROLD CYR Student Council Representative v JUNIORS MARGO COGHILL HOWARD KRUGER GORDON SCHLEPP BRENDA WHITE Gary Petersen President Dolores Wesley Vice President Sharron Sloan Secretary Gary Dyer Student Council Representative Cheryl Kauk John Dreissen Merle Pauli Douglas Schlepp Gerald Severson Phyllis Thompson s o p H o M o R E S Paul Perry President Kippy Keller Vice President Sharon Hilliard Secretary Randy Moser Treasurer Gary Gollehon Student Council Representative Karen Weikum FRESHMEN Terry Sloan Velma Thompson Gerald Pauli Dick Matthys Harold Lindsey Barry Barrington JUNIOR HIGH FRONT ROW: Pamela Holmes, Jo Ann Hofland, Dianne Petersen, Wilma Thompson, Marie Mumm, Hazel Britton.
