SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE After having lived and worked with the students of the Near East for a year, I am impressed with the opportunities of American youth to get an education, and to do something with it after you have finish ed your formal.schooling. In knowledge of the arts, the languages, and to some extent, in the sciences, their accomplishments are on a high level. Theirs is an old culture and an old civilization. But they believe, and rightly so, that the youth of America has the great- est opportunity in the world to receive and use an education. How they beg for a chance to come to our country to study! If students from other lands regard your opportunities as priceless, shouldn't more of you avail yourselves of a higher and better education? As I have often told you, education should be an endless process. High school and college courses can only at best, point the way to more work to be done. No education is terminal it is rather a matter of continious growth.--Morgan J. Sherlock PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE On behalf of my classmates and myself, I wish to welcome you to the commencement exercises of the Class of 1953. I would like to thank my classmates for electing me president of this class for the past year. This I believe. I believe in God and in freedom of religion. Our Country was founded on freedom of religion, the right to worship in the church of one's choice. The right to worship as you believe is an important part of what makes our country what it is today. I believe in a strong democratic form government. I believe that America is different from any other nation on earth, This is why. The men who cut the pattern for Americans a century and three-quarters ago, held a deep conviction that men--all men--are born with qualities that give them a unique status. The simple fact of man's being born a human being, they felt, marks him as the most important thing God ever created--and entitles him to a certain dignity and to se1f-re- spect. They believed that certain God-given, not men-given, rights-- each being free to live,to be free, to build his life without the handicap of any interference that can be avoided. It is the secret of Hthat somethingn which stamped Americans as Americans. Some call it individual initiative, others simply Uback- bone.W But whatever it is called it is a precious ingredient in our national character--one which we must not lose. I believe in our educational system that seeks to develop a pro- gram that is close to the parents, not dominated by either religionor state. In some countries of today youth is taught to believe what their leader believes. I believe people should be taught to think for themselves as an individual, not in mass, to develop their own minds not depress them. With the concepts of self-government and individual freedom now threatened more than ever before in the history of Western Civilization, it becomes the first duty of all thoughtful people to improve our educational system everywhere and to extend to all of our citizens equal opportunity for self government. I believe in these three organizations, the Church, our Demo- cractic Government and Free Educational System working in their own field for the benefit of all the people as a whole.--Leah Oien Sponsored by THE COFFEE CUP CAFE
