The school year began as usual. Students ar- rived in late August from all over the U.S. and other nations, settling into Harper, Wyckoff, Williams, and other dorms for the next two semesters. However, all dorms are not created equal. During the summer, Geisert was transformed into the Dorm of the Future. .JI lfx 1 4!MODEFiN TIMES 3- 1... if f.. . ..i,. ,A . . Tu. 1. Photos by Frank Mehlig and Chris Kowalczyk Almost all the rooms had been sup- plied with AT8tT microcomputers com- plete with graphics and word-processing programs. Such modernization was not limited to the dorm rooms alone. The redecora- tion of Geisert and University Hall cafe- terias greatly enhanced the dining atmo- sphere. All cafeterias also underwent a switchover in management. MODERN TIMESXS A less noticeable but, perhaps, a more so- cially relevant change also occurred. University Hall, or U-Hall, lost its reputation as Fortress of the Maidens lbeing an all female dormj when it housed male residents for the first time in many years. They were placed on a renovated ground floor. Lovelace dorm, previously a freshman male dorm, was leased as an incuba- tor facility for small businesses. X, GXMODERN TIMES lf- F-. 14 .. On September 23rd, a wide array of company representatives gathered on campus to attract potential employees and exhibit the opportunities available to those who know that knowledge is an important asset. Students at Bradley acquire exper- tise in a variety of different fields. They may, as a result, find employment with a variety of institutions. ti- To Closer It follows that the potential em- ployers represented at Career Day were as diverse as AT8tT Network Systems and Pizza Hut, or the K-Mart Corpora- tion and the U.S. Peace Corps. This vari- ety reinforces the attitude of the career counseling center that there is a suitable career field for every individual. With over twenty-five different sororities and fraternities an inevitable, yet good- hearted, competition exists. Competitive energies are released during Greek Week, seven days of con- tests, races, and parties reminiscent of the old Olympic Games festivities. Greek houses vie against each other in chariot races, tug-o-war, pyramid building, comi- cal skit presentations, and mud volleyball fto name just a few of the gamesl. Greek presidents participate in a special contest, the Presidents Race. The object is to dig a penny out of a pot of flour . . . using only the face. And for all those oatmeal lov- ers out there, there was also a contest to see who could eat the most oatmeal. Greek houses were dressed in banners in- corporating this year's theme, The Choice of a New Generation. Those who came to view the competi- tions included both Greek and non-Greek students. Sigma Nu emerged as the win- ner ofthe most games. Delta Upsilon pro- vided stiff competition but came in second. . JF 22fGFlEEK WEEK 'ig- f' Far Top Left: Block! Hit! . . . But not at the same time! There is no doubt that Lydia Moss Bradley and those who assisted her in opening the Polytechnic Institute in 1897 would be impressed by its growth into a major comprehensive university. Ever since that first class of seniors graduated in 1901, Bradley students have been walking away with a quality education. This is one reason why outstanding teachers are honored on this day. The Putnam Award for Excellence in Teaching went to Dr. Gerald Elseth, a biology professor. Dr. Robert Baer, a marketing instructor, received the Burlington Northern Foundation Award for Teaching, and the Burlington Northern Foundation Award for Scholarship went to Dr. Harold Rosenberg, a psychology teacher. Dr. Kalman Goldberg, economics professor, received the Illinois Outstanding Professor award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Awards were also given out for excellence in alumni involvement. Top: Dr. John Hitt presented awards to Bradley pro- fessors. But whatever the motivation, on October 23, 1986, approxi- mately fifty members of the Class of '36 came to Peoria from as far away as Cali- fornia to attend a fifty-year class reunion. The reunion was a combined activity with the extensive Founder's Day celebra- tion. Brunch was held at Wildlife Prarie Park and a debut reception was held for the Fifty-Plus club. Most know him as ferret face or Major Frank Burns from the movie and television series M.A.S.H. Mr. Linville came to campus as part of the ACBU Lecture Committees Fall Se- ries. He opened his show with a small dance and some very frank remarks. His vibrance was evident from the begin- ning and contagious throughout the eve- ning. First came a description of Larry Lin- ville himself, the man and his career. Sur- prisingly, his first ambition was to become a pilot, even through his tenure in college. When he was accepted to the London Academy for the Performing Arts, howev- er, that all changed. He promptly decided that acting was his Iife's passion. Mr. Linville then describes his many experiences with the M.A.S.H. series and those who were involved in its production. The night was topped off with the presen- tation of a forty minute uncut episode of M.A.S.H. After the lecture, Mr. Linville re- mained behind to meet those bold enough to ask for autographs, photos, and hand- shakes. Such topics as rape, incest, and child abuse emerge with the added impact of strong language. CAST Lady in Yellow ..... ....... D elaine Bolton Lady in Blue ......... ............ Or maybe just watching others take a few swings? The guys in the ring in the Field house may have been releasing tension, but they were also helping to raise money for the National Arthritis Foundation. The Bradley Bouts were sponsored by the lnterfraternity Council, Busch Beer, and Lucky Lady Saloon. The Bouts were open to anyone wishing to participate, and pay the one dollar entry fee. The idea of a boxing tournament to raise donations for charity is not a new one, and has been used successfully on other campuses such as Illinois State and the University of Illinois. The Bouts at Bradley started two years ago. 82!BFiADLEY BOUTS Q-Q. . . A'-v N'S.4 ' .J- QS Tab J' Q9 NJN if ' .I . 6-5 la- '11 wg:-. : 4 'P f .f.32.'f'-5' 'K l f k'aA -21' 0-LQ, i .' I Annette and Frankie knew a good thing when they saw it. This year the Activities Council brought a little bit of the summer to come to Olin Quad as a farewell before the semester ended in May. Food, drink, volleyball, and live bands all for free. But no beach party would be complete without a little sand, so ACBU shipped it in by the ton! Naturally, there was a sandcastle-buiId- ing contest, a wildest beach party outfit contest, and a competition for the whitest body as well as the tannest. Prizes awarded were provided by Avanti's, the Bradley Bookstore, the College Inn, Regal Drug Distributors, and Walgreens. This disease was cured the day Bradley's 1987 Senior Class received its diplomas. These proud students are now faced with a great challenge, to face a new world and find success. The past four lor morei years began with Freshmen Orientation for most of the graduates. It is undoubtedly only one of the many college experiences that this class shares. Friendships formed through club and organizational activi- ties, through fraternities and sororities, through being confined in a small room with someone for two semesters. A great deal of self-realization was also a part of the past four years. Who would ever guess that a human being was capable of surviving a combination of all-night cram sessions, beer parties, formals, and cafeteria food? Some stu- dents knew exactly where they were headed and finished with the same ma- jor they started with. Others needed alit- tle bit of soul-searching. Now it all begins again. New rules, new challenges, new discoveries, but the same old quirky feeling of strange- ness that came with being freshmen. They have succeeded in graduating col- lege, they won't stop now. Beginning next year, soccer will become an 'NCAA Division l varsity sport at Bradley. This change of status will challenge the team with a tougher and longer schedule. Zak Khayat, who was voted Most Valuable Player by his team- mates, led the team with ten goals. The Leadership Award was pre- sented to Mike Kenny. Mike led the team's defense, along with Stefan Hlpskind. I The tri-captains, Curt Magnu- son, Stefan Hipskind, and Mike Ken- ny will hand over 'the reins to next year's captains: Lou Streeker, Jim Tait, and Scott Becker, as the team begins to prepare for its first Divi- sion l season. The players will be ready -they already began practic- ing this spring. Although the club finished with a 6-4 record, everyone is optimistic about next year and the future of soccer as a varsity sport. Top: Mike Kenny dribbles the ball up field. Qufkvii' Shooting for the Best This was certainly not a story- book season like the 32-3 season last year. The NCAA put BU on two years of probation and one year of sanctions. Dick Versace left to the NBA's Detroit Pistons, and a new head coach wasn't named until the first day of classes. That new head coach was Stan Albeck, who came back to coach his alma mater after spending the last sixteen years in the pro ranks. Al- beck eventually guided the team to a 17-12 season, second to the Tulsa Hurricanes for the MVC regular sea- son title. The Braves had a 10-4 league record but were edged out by Tulsa's 11-3 mark. While the Hurricanes and the Braves battled for the regular sea- son title, Hersey Hawkins made him- self a national name by finishing fifth in the nation by scoring with a 27.2 points per game average. The Braves boasted a 12-2 re- cord at home. They had a 24 game home winning streak snapped by Memphis State in a nationally tele- vised game on ESPN. Sophomore Paul Wilson re- ceived MVC Player-of-the-Week honors once while Hersey Hawkins won or tied for the same award four times -the most for any Valley play- er. In the MVC, Hawkins ran away with the Player-of-the-Year voting, taking the award with a unanimous vote by both the media and the coaches. Anthony Manuel made second team MVC by both panels. The Braves, with eight seniors due to return next season, will again be favored to win the league, and will be eligible once again for post-sea- son play. One of the main problems for the team was injuries. In the Regional Championships, hosted by Bradley, both the men's and women's teams started their races without their team captains. Bad luck plagued the team in the Conference Championships as well, when the Lady Braves' team captain and number one runner, Melinda fSwank, was forced to drop out of the race because of knee problems. There were also some amazing individual performances. The Wom- en's Performance-of-the-Year was turned in by Karol Kuehn, who fin- ished in eighteenth place in the Gateway Conference meet. This was the best finish ever for a lady Brave. The men's Performance-of- the-Year was by Matt McCormick, whose nineteenth place NCAA Dis- trict 5 finish avenged his losses to all but one who defeated him at the MVC. The Most Valuable Runner - Woman Award went to Melinda Swank, and the Strider's Trophy Winner - Men went to Matt McCor- mick. The men finished the season 1- 2 in dual meets and the women were 0-6 in dual meets. ln the Conference Champion- ships, the men finished in fifth place and the women in tenth place. At the Regionals, the Lady Braves finished without a team score, while the Braves finished a respectable tenth place out of eighteen teams. ,g,' v, 'X f I 5 1 ,. . .ff ' 1. I , 4 .Mx f ? The season ended with a 3 to 6 record, which coach Dewey Kalmer generally credited to poor hitting and the high number of freshman and seniors on the team. Freshmen tend to be less relaxed as do seniors who have many distrac- tions associated with graduation. However, spring brought new life into the team. The '86-'87 Brad- ley Braves Baseball team set an all- sports school record in total number of wins, 41 to 21 losses. Coach Kal- mer stated that the strongest point responsible for the great season was the high number of super pitch- ers the team had this year. No other Bradley sports team has ever won so many games in one season. This should come as no sur- prise: Bradley has a reputation for producing outstanding baseball players. Three former Braves are now in the big leagues, the Minneso- ta Twins' Kirby Puckett, Chicago Cubs' Guy Hoffman, and St. Louis' Jim Lindeman. More players from Bradley than any other Missouri Val- ley Conference team are signed by pro-ball scouts. 4 Photos by Frank Mehlig 's I f - 9 1 in V22 .13 fu' 'Q .l'1QQ4jfQw, F005 'W 'M 'TC I Q1 5 lik QU 'VT' ' 1 tg 'fl wmuv-cwfqvuw Hilllwillliilllg imfww .WIWW 'g'- Ill' 111m UW1lIV ' .- - .Q- 4 . ,gf 5' . 2 . 41534: ...4 5 A 1' . -.. t . 3 4 . , , 0- . - Y V , . . Although the fresh- men members lended much sup- port, problems arose within the team that could not be reconciled. As a result, some members left. A major blow to the team occurred in mid-season when Coach Joe Spink suffered a stroke and was unable to head the team.
