The Glass Menagerie ln January, following mid-year break, the Bradley University Theater Department re-opened their Theater season with a pro- duction of The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams. This play tells the story of a family in St. Louis in the 193O's. The play focuses on the fears and desires of the three family members and how these fears and desires affect each other. The play has four cast members and yet the audience is exposed to another charac- ter that is never seen but his presence is always felt. This unseen character is the father of the family,whose picture hangs on the living room wall. In this Bradley production the cast consisted of four studentsg Mary Colton as the mother, Gregory Lhamon as the son, Jessica Scheiber as the daughter, and Michael Fancher as the gentleman caller. The part of the gentleman caller represents hope which is so desperatly needed in the other cast members. Under the direction of Dr. Collins J. Bell these four talented actors were able to creat an expressive, wonderful production. Assisting Dr. Bell and the cast throughout the month of January was Kandiss Bowen as Assistant Director and stage manager. The set was designed by Deann Fleming and costumes by Dorothy Johnson. All in all, Bradley's production of The Glass Menagerie was an exceptional production. After preparing throughout the month of January, during the semester break, the cast performed the play for audiences from January 21 through January 30. The Glass Menagerie was a delightful way to re open the 1982- 1983 Theater Season. '. f -jr -5f'J-,M-Q ndrocles nd The Lion As the Holiday Season descended upon Bradley University the Theater Department presented the play, Androcles and the Lion, a play by Aurand Harris. The play was written in the style of Commedia Dell' Arte and incorporates music and dance with the drama. This Bradley production was directed by Dr. Richard Marriott and many children and adults were charmed by the production which ran from November 19 through December 5. Androcles and the Lion is a simple story revolving around the friendship of Androcles, a slave and a lion. The show had a cast of almost twenty five people including several children. Julia Escher portrayed Androcles the slave and Ron Claypool played her master, Pantolone. Other cast members included Mary Alice Kelly, Andrew Tetzlaff, Michael Fancher, and Dawn Acheson. The star of Androcles and the Lion was David Houghtalin in the part of the Lion. Houghtaling charmed and entertained every- one as the King of the Jungle. Working on the production staff were Molly McCullough, who worked on coordinating the music with the play and Paula Petrini who designed the dance sequences. The Costumes were made by Dorothy Johnson and the cast designed their own make up. This production used Michael Dwyer as set designer and Brent Flem- ing as Lighting and Technical designer. The music used in this production was written by Glenn Mack. Androcles and the Lion charmed audiences in the Hart- mann Center for the Performing Arts for eight performances. The play by Aurand Harris was entertaining for children and adults alike and although it was only about an hour in length it was a delightful holiday treat for many. The mixture of music, drama and dance added a special touch to the production. . 3 Shadow Box Cancer is one of the most dreaded dis- eases in the world today and the play, The Shadow Box, by M. Christofer ex- amines the effect cancer has on people mentally. The Shadow Bow, is a play that re- volves around three cancer patients and how their families, friends and themselves learn to accept their terminal diagnosis. Throughout the play the audience is shown how different people learn to cope with their situations. The three patients are played by Jennifer Styvers, Greg Dolph, and Jeff Magnum. Technically this play was extremely challenging for the Hartmann center crew under the supervision of Brent Fleming. The show ran from Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 13 and was a huge success.
