Miss Nugent, representing Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, was presented with a bouquet of roses at the Homecoming basketball game. Other members ofthe Homecoming court were: Terri Bell, Pi Beta Phig Tammy Friedman, Sigma Delta Taug Michelle Hanson, Chi Omegag and Laurie Hughes, Tau Kappa Epsilon. The weekend began with a Homecoming pep rally held in the Fieldhouse on Thursday. Teams from dorm floors, fra- ternities and sororities participated in various games, such as a scooter race. The Homecoming Dance, attended by both Bradley stu- dents and alumni, was held on Friday night at the Conti- nental Regency Hotel. The Braves won the Homecoming basketball game against New Mexico State, which was played in front of a sellout crowd. 4 E55 7 at Q Q 20 l 1 1 1 I I I l 1l I CAMPUS CA IVAL April 14, 15 and 16 were the dates of the 1978 Campus Carnival. This year, Campus Carnival was moved from the Fieldhouse to Northwoods Shopping Mall in order to get people in the Peoria community more involved in the carnival. The theme of the 1978 Campus Carnival, sponsored by ACBU, was Fun Encounters of the Charitable Kind . Sororities, fraternities, dorm councils and other organi- zations constructed booths relating to the theme. A King and Queen Charity contest was also held. En- trants wore costumes having to do with the outer spacel' theme. Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity started the week- end by sponsoring a Casino Night at the Student Cen- ter. This was the single most-moneymaking event of Campus Carnival Weekend. Many of the participants in this year's Campus Carni- val attempted to break world records, for example the number of miles that a man was carried on a stretcher. They raise money for charity by getting pledges of so much money per hour from other Bradley students. Moving the carnival from Bradley's campus to the mall proved to be a successful idea. The idea of setting aside a special weekend in honor of brothers and sisters of Bradley students came from the Campus Affairs and Activities Committee of the Student Senate. The weekend consisted of cartoons, sports activities and demonstrations at Haussler Hall, a movie, free ice cream party, an all- campus barbecue, and events sponsored by individual dorm councils. The Merri-n-Ettes performed between games at the doubleheader against Western Illinois University. They were aided by some mem- bers of the Inter-Fraternity Council. Combining Siblings' Weekend with Campus Carnival Weekend provided Bradley stu- dents and their brothers and sisters with a fun-filled, organized weekend. IBLINGS' WEEKE D 25 Mixed emotions filled the air as students filed into their assigned dorms, frats or sorority houses. Friends and relatives carrying suit- cases, boxes, and stereos from the cars to the empty rooms. Crowded elevators, musty smell- ing rooms and some tearful good- byes. For the freshmen it was the first realization that Bradley Uni- versity would become a home rather than a mailing address for endless forms. For returning stu- dents, it was the first chance to see and talk to old friends. The campus began to come alive once again as students decorated their rooms, making them seem a little more like home. For many students it was the first time they saw their Dads since leaving for school in late August. A banquet honoring Bradley Dads was held at the student center, after which Dad's Day ceremonies were held in the Fieldhouse. Parents of Bradley students also enjoyed the music of the jazz band at their Dad's Day concert. Many students also took their par- ents to see a performance of A Phoenix Too Frequentv at the Carousel Playhouse. The day was topped off with a midnight basketball scrimmage in the Fieldhouse. The scrimmage was preceded by a dance in the Fieldhouse foyer and followed by a breakfast. 30 -L ' Mx: ,. - ,- f-ff - Q' 9 5- A- .G ' +..,.N x 4 'Q 1 ? xx x- :Ei X K P x ,..-Q N 1 X X 'X Z f . 4 Q, 1, , , ...A + VN! Dr. Claire Etaugh was presented the Award for Professional Excellence, which goes to the faculty member who has made outstanding contributions in to research and creative productions. The Francis G. Mergen Memorial Award, which is given annually to a member of the Bradley faculty or professional staff who excels in the field of public service was awarded to Dr. Philip Weinberg. Weinberg is the founding dean of the College of Communications and Fine Arts. About 200 people attended the ceremony, At which the Bradley Chorale performed. Recipients of service pins were also announced at the ceremony. William Clarey, Arthur Dini, Ruth jass, Wayne McCvaughey, and Chet Zebell were awarded thirty-year pins, while Lyle Bishop, Orville Noth- durft, and Virginia Segale received twenty-five year pins. 43 Worldng Towards Grganization A n l The Campus Activities Coordinating Committee CCACCJ was originally established by Deans King and Primm at the suggestion of President Abegg. The committee has met occasionally to develop leadership workshops, an all-school calendar, and a list of campus facilities. CACC was re- formed in April of 1978 to alleviate the overlapping of activities scheduled. The main function of CACC is to fos- ter communications and interaction among the Bradley community. The subgoals include a resource center for leadership, coordination of campus activities, an infor- mation center for publicity of events, and to initiate Brad- ley community cooperation. , WW - ' 45 There is a term that Bradley students use which is unique to people on this campus. This Word, facetime, refers to time spent by students being seen around campus and in places frequented by students. There are many methods of achieving facetime. One Way is by spending time in between classes in front of Bradley Hall. It seems that some students don't go to class at all-they just spend their day putting in facetime. CX ' 4' I' 14' r Another good location to get facetime is the library. This can be done in a group or on your own. Either way, the rules are the same. A student comes to the library, bringing books, supposedly to study. After walking around the whole library surveying the scene and making his presence known, he chooses a table to sit at which is highly visible to any one entering. Then, opening a book, his eyes dart around and a smile comes to his face each time he sees a familiar face. M Congmmlafiomf College qf Bmineyf Dqbmftmem' qf Naming . Joe Stowell was dismissed at the end of last season then appointed administrative asst. to Ron Ferguson. This move ended 27 years of more-than-successful coaching, in which the former BU player compiled an overall 446-218 mark, inclusive of grade school, high school and college. Stowell teams were invited to three post-season tour- naments, including the only Commisioner's Classic in 1974 in which the upset-minded Braves Hnished sec- ond. And, with the season almost completed, Ver- sace had placed a target on his back. Versace is a proven winner. He was head coach at jack- son, Michigan for two seasons where he compiled a 47-13 record. His second team was rated as high as 14th among the nation's junior colleges. He served as an assistant at Michigan State and St. Louis Univ. prior to the jackson job. Versace started his basketball coaching career at St. Joseph's High School in Kenosha, Wise., where he was 65-29. He then moved to Gordon Tech HS in Chicago, winning 102 of 121 games and back-to-back Catholic League titles. 1 61 Nu--w It's somehow hard to imagine that a basketball team which only wins nine of its 26 games could be called promising. But Bradley is. The Braves, which only won three games in the Missouri Valley Conference. dropped eight games by three points or less. Take the case of Bradley. One Saturday their day began at 8:15 a.m. It didnit end until 2:30 Sunday morning. Belleville College arrived to play the women, and play they did. Bradley played the perfect host, as Belleville won in five games. Coach Annelle Griffin didnlt think her team should have been so hospitable. Later, the team traveled to joliet for three matches, losing to St. Francis C10-150, C7-155. Bradley went onto defeat North Central College and Loyola to up their record to 4-3. Despite the slow start, Griffin is very pleased with her team. Fresh- man julie Navarre and Sandy Incaudo are growing confident and developing into fine players. Kathy Svoboda is consistant, while Lynn Held and Kim Goodwin are beginning to hit the ball harder. 71 Ou --nv CQ . 1 K , .xy 4 1 WL,- a.' They finished their 1978 tour with a 14-10 record. I would say it was a very ordinary season, said Coker. Although the record was better than those Compiled over the past three seasons, and though over a 20 year span their winning percentage is 71, Coker was not satisfied. Junior Tom Skowronek finished the year with a 18-12 record as Bradley's number one singles player. The other members on the ladder from two to eight respectively are Bill Metzger, XYfill Davis, Dan McCarthey, Mike Vogelsing, Erik Jensen, Glen Borowski and Bob Abbott. 76 Winning only one of the first five matches, the womens tennis team then won five straight before going to the state tournament. And although none of the players ad- vanced beyond the second round, Coach Winkler was pleased with the results. In singles competition, freshmen Karen Miller and Deb Braswell were the only players to advance to the second round. But that was the end of the line for womens ten- nis in 1978. Internal problems plagued the squad throughout the season. Shortages of personnel, operating funds, fan support and organized lead- ership could all be traced to one familiar source, the administrations per- renial failure to recognize them as a varsity team. Standouts on this year's club included Mike Bleck, Mark Christensen, Glen Borowski, and four- year veteran Frank Herout. 189 On February 28, 1970, 40 theatre majors, faculty and friends chris- tened the new Carousel Playhouse with a bottle of cheap champagne. Together they described their move from the stage in Neumiller Chapel of Bradley Hall to the playhouse in four simple words, A dream come true. The Bradley Theatre Dept. began their performances in the Carousel on Oct. 2, 1970, with the produc- tion of three Theatre of the Absurd plays, and according to Dr, Collins J. Bell who has been with the de- partment since 1964, it was only fit- ting that they end their stay with the same type of performance. A Farewell to Carousel -Q6 xi cet S rust! 190 O' Bell explained what prompted their move to the Carousel in 1970. There were a lot of problems in availability of Neumil- ler to us and we just did not have much time to get a show together. So, we found a place, this old place, and moved in. At the time it was our dream, he said. Bell said there are a lot of good things about the Carousel but very few of them have to do with a good place to put on plays. For a person who loves the theatre and cloesnlt care where he sees it, its like way off broadway in some little church base- ment. It's great, but for the average theatre patron who likes a little comfort it's terrible, Bell explained. Farewell Carousel . . . Hello dreams, memories and bigger challenges. It's a dream come true. 191 S P . ac adam IC S 195 -' ,ol-3. 'Nw 39.1, s College qf Bzzsineys -- V : ',. in ,L si-I frifgx 1-9 - i Nr 'Wi ,yin ri. :iff T' CFSPVZQ yr . 99596 QE.
