So this insert is provided as a recap to the 1973-1974 season Bradley spent the first half of the Missouri Valley Conference season trailing Louisville by one game. The Braves moved into a first place tie with a victory over Tulsa while the Louisville Cardinals lost to New Mexico State. But those same New Mexico Aggies knocked off Bradley two days later. This set up the inevitable confrontation between two powerhouses at the end of the season - Bradley and Louisville. But Bradley had a scare. The Braves traveled to Des Moines. Iowa, to play the Drake Bulldogs and survived with a 75-74 victory on two free throws by senior Dave Klobucher. Then came the game of the year at the Fieldhouse - Louisville vs. Bradley. The Cardinals grabbed an early lead and held on to it for most of the game. But the Braves rallied in the second half and tied the game on Jim Caruthers' jump shot from the corner with 7 seconds to go. This sent the game into overtime. The Braves grabbed a three-point lead in overtime but lost it in the last minute and were defeated by Louisville 87-84. But the season did not end there for the Braves. They acted as the Valley representative in the Collegiate Commissioners Association Tournament in St. Louis. The Braves defeated Kansas State in an inspired effort in their first-round game. Then they faced Southern California and lost in overtime. The Braves finished the 73-74 season with a 20-8 record. Nm l' 62 Basketball The 1974-75 edition of the Bradley Basketball Braves was expected to accomplish great things. They started out by winningtheir first six games. After getting by lllinois Wesleyan, the Braves gave Iowa State Coach Ken Trickey an answer to his question Who is Bradley? by defeating his Cyclones 93-72. The Braves then had their first road test and squeaked by Kent State. They came back to the Fieldhouse to take victories over Loyola, Wheaton and St. Louis. The Braves were off to an impressive 6-O record. ABOVE: Basketball Team FRONT ROW3 Defl- nis Smith, Roger Phegley, Greg Smith, Mark Dohner, Mike Davis, Lawrence Bentley, Gary Church. They were soundly defeated by Washington and Brigham Young on their West Coast trip. Then came their first battle against Louisville at Freedom Hall on January 4. The Braves played well and were leading by two points with 10 seconds to play. But a missed free throw and a tap-in of a missed shot at the buzzer sent the game into overtime. The Cardinals grabbed the lead and held on for an 82-80 win. After six straight wins, the Braves now had three straight losses. 'fc The Braves then returned to the friendly confines of Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse to renew an old rivalry against neighboring Illinois State. Bradley responded with a convincing 106-85 victory. The Braves returned to conference play two nights later and defeated Wichita State. Bradley then took to the Southwest and came back empty-handed. They lost to North Texas State 69- 64 and to New lVlexico State in overtime. The Braves came back to the Fieldhouse in hopes of regaining their winningform againstCreighton. But the Bluejays surprised the Braves and handed them a 82-76 defeat. Bradley now had lost three games in a row again and were reeling with six defeats in their last eight games. Haussler, twice acting president of Bradley University and one of its chief executive officers for the past 24 years, died Sept. 5, 1974, at St. Fran- cis Hospital in Peoria after suffering a heart attack. Dr. Haussler, 74, had been executive secretary of the university and director of deferred giving since 1968. Dr. A. G. Frenchie Haussler was indeed a legend in his own time and although Bradley University was one of the sources of this legend, it was also the beneficiary. The last 24 years of his life were spent at Bradley. and his every waking moment was dedicated to promoting and strengthening the university. During his years at Bradley. he was called upon to serve in a variety of administrative positions, and he responded with strong leadership. efficiency and dedication. As a high school teacher, coach, principal and superin- tendent, he had an opportunity to work with young people. and although he and his wife Helen had no children of .fi rg -..g 5 I' :fm , J -1, . ...... f' A ,XL their own. their legion of friends include many whom 'Frenchie' met, helped and guided duringtheir high school and college years.
