BRADLEY UNIVERSITY Horam, ILLINOIS March 19, 1954 TO THE STUDENTS OF BRADLEY UNIVERSITY On January 30, 1954 the Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Harold P. Rodes had accepted their offer to become the fifth President of Bradley University. The Board made this announcement with a feeling of satis- faction and of real accomplishment. Dr. Rodes was the unanimous choice of all members of the Board and of the Faculty and Alumni Advisory Committees. He is one of the outstanding younger educators in the United States. He received his B.A. degree with highest honors from Dartmouth and his M. A. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale. His strong educational background and his knowledge of the problems of our private colleges and universities combined with his excellent administrative ability make him an ideal president for Bradley. We have every reason to feel that under his leadership Bradley University will become a better and stronger university. cerely yours President Board of Trustees An empty office-a dust-filmed desk . The throbbing persistent tempo of the President's office has been stilled for more than a year. An invading spirit of uneasy quiet settled over the room like ai thin film of dust clouding the ceaseless efforts carried on elsewhere to keep our university running' smooth- ly. The only indications of strain appeared as deep furrowed wrin- kles on the brows of such men as Dr. Haussler and Dean Sipple, who held our faith through an era of uncertainty. Now a spiritual dust cloth has brushed the furniture until once again it glows with a satin-like warmth. The tension has eyapo- rated, the strain seems to be gone, and once more the door stands invitingly open. lVith the spirit of presidents from the past hope- fully watching over our future-we anxiously await the presence of Dr. Harold P. Rodes.

Father of our silent generation- a oof and forcefully academic . . Dr. Chester E. Sipple looks more like the mythical atomic scientist than Dean of the University. A rather shy, retiring gentleman, his eltin humor belies his end- less industry as he tackles the myriad of problems simultaneously confronting him. His piercing eyes show immediate compre- hension of any situation, no matter how complex, as he contemplates Bradley life from that rather harried yet intelligent countenance so symbolic of his position.
