The staff, in portraying the activities of the col- lege, hopes that the book has caught, to some slight degree, the spirit which has been so evident on the campus this year. JULIA coLv1N, Editor-in-Chief ROBERT E. HALLER, Business Manager GEORGIA E. HOPPER To Miss Georgia E. Hopper we lovingly and respectfully dedicate this 1940 Poly- scopef' The twenty-six years of loyal service she has given to her students and to Bradley have been filled with rich and varied inter- ests, fine achievement, and great honor. She has always been known and will continue to be remembered for her high standards of scholarship, her sincere enthusiasm, her ju- dicious advice, and her gracious courtesy. In the hope that this volume will consti- tute a souvenir of her years at Bradley, we then take great pleasure in dedicating it to her. CLARENCE E. COMSTOCK With a feeling of deep pride we dedicate the 1940 Polyscope to another of our most faithful and lovable friends, Professor Clar- ence Elmer Comstock, Sc.D. Throughout the forty-two years that Dr. Comstock has been a vital factor in the life of Bradley, he has truly exemplified the fundamental ideals and progressive spirit of our college. His mental alertness, his lively wit, and his kindly atti- tude have ever been a source of joy to those who have had the privilege of his acquaint- ance. May his future years be bright with the consciousness of the warm and sincere affec- tion in which he is held by two generations of Bradley students! And yet no individual or or- ganization mentioned or pictured in this vol- ume can afford to be staticg the record here portrayed is not complete. Highly commend- able as this graphic report is, we are expecting all of the characters included to be constantly mobolized under the caption Forward, hav- ing first selected worthy objectives. vidae W, THE DEANS DEAN OF WOMEN Your theme for The Polyscope of 1940 is Forward You are already familiar with the practical application of this work in your daily lives at college. Perhaps some of you may have already shown evidence of genius along certain lines but industry will improve your progress. If you have not genius, as is the case with most of us, industry will take its place. In the experiences which lie before you as college men and women when you leave Bradley College, may you cultivate the habit of industry, working without haste but also without rest. No better fortune can be desired for you, than that you approach the perplexing problems of the present day with the slogan Forward, that is, with the spirit of improvement and untiring OWJLQJ DEAN OF MEN As I write, two quotations from recent read- endeavor. ing serve to remind me of the importance of our common educational undertaking. The quotations are: Social failure and suc- cess in collegiate society have nothing to do with reality unless one can give them their proper im- portance. The highest grades in scholastic studies are worthless unless they are properly integrated into the business of living. it :fi 25: Without the proper perspective, the wisest of men is the veriest fool. The second quotation is: One of the prime fundamentals of higher education is that increase of balanced judgment which distinguishes the truly educated man from the mass. Far beyond any claim of vocational efficiency this is the foundation of a college education. As the graduating class of this year prepares to leave the halls, my major hope for them is that they have obtained to these ideals through the educational process of the years. civffjfgwfgaf EMMA T. We believe that we have done what many in the past have said was impos- sible-that is, a paper free of all campus political affiliation. We. too, firmly believe that such a policy has worked for the better- ment of the school, including its organizations. As for credit for this new era in journalism at Bradley, no sin- gle person is worthy of the credit. Running a newspaper is not a one-man job. Success depends upon the cooperation of the en- tire staff. In this connection I sincerely thank Bernie Bour, Bill Conver, Margaret Harker, Betty Taggart, and Advisor Dr. Bell. Our only hope is that our pres- ent policy will be continued by our successors. THE TECH EDITOR JULIA COLVIN The staff, without which no editor could put out a year book, deserves much praise for its dili- gent work in helping to portray the scenes of college life. I there- fore thank every member of this year's staff for cooperating so willingly with me. The staff also thanks the fac- ulty members, the students, our advisor, Dr. Bell, our printer, our engraver, and our photographer for their kindness and coopera- tion. THE POLYSCOPE EDITOR. 56 ROBERT HALLER The Business Staff, through excellent cooperation between students and advertisers, this year has exceeded all records in advertising lineage for the Tech. It has been through an efficient, energetic staff that a steady pro- gress has been marked through- out the entire year. A remarkable year has also been recorded in the publishing of the Polyscope after the Busi- ness Staff reduced prices as much as possible in order that many more Bradley students would be able to obtain one of these books. I heartily thank the students and the businessmen for their interest and the part they played in making this a successful year. BUSINESS MANAGER. Robbie has called this victory tops in football achievement at Bradley. The 1ong-to-be- remembered touchdown was scored on a 14-yard pass from Bobby Theus into the arms of Virgil Van Cleave. Our Braves moved next to Stagg Field, Chicago, where they tackled the Big Ten's University of Chicago. The game was a moral victory for the Techmen as the front wall of Van Cleave, Tower, Taylor, Hoffman, Gross, Zimmerman and Kiefer held the Maroons on the one-yard line for four consecutive tries. As the final gun shot making a game a scoreless tie the Braves were deep in Chicago ter- ritory. Opening their home season before some 4,000 fans Bradley proved that they were far too powerful for the average small college team as they ran roughshod over Carleton College 26 to 6. The homecoming crowd saw Jim Molnar. Tech fullback, score three touchdowns, the last one being an 85-yard jaunt. 79 F RESHMAN SQUAD Arnholt O'Brien Case Sonderrnan Redard Conavay Cairns Lanz Moyle. Scoring was fur- nished by Ted Panish, Bobby Theus, and jim Molnar while Max Taylor, Charley Gross and Ed Kiefer stood out for defensive play. A capacity crowd filled Braves' Field on October 30 to View the annual grudge battle with Illinois Wesleyan. It was a great day for Coach Dutch Meinen's forward wall as they held the Wesleyan backs in complete check. In smashing out their 13 to 0 victory the Techsters outgained the Titans better than two to one. Coach A. J. Robertson used mostly reserves in the game against Augustana and all the lads came through with flying colors to Win 34 to 7 before a large Parent's Day throng. Outstanding runs of the free scoring game were ripped off by Bill Mitchell and Chuck Pitcher. Knox proved to be an easy foe as the Braves won 31 to 6 scoring three times in the second quarter. Knox had scored first to lead at the end of the first period. Twelve Seniors, among them some of the greatest stars in Bradley's history, closed an undefeated season in sensational style as they overpowered Millikin 42 to 0. Nebraska, where they defeated a stubborn U. of Nebraska live 39-24, and then downed New Mex- ico 55 to 35. The traveling Techmen moved next to Berkeley, California, where they were forced to suffer their first defeat. Bradley lead 20 to 19 at the halftime but Could not match the accurate shooting of the Golden Bears in the second half. The Famous Five of Schunk, Orsborn, Hutchins, Panish and Olson added one of its most impressive victories on December 27 when they won 52 to 39 over Oregon. The Oregon team went on to win the Pacific Coast conference and the National Collegiate tournament in Chicago. 82 Experiencing its worst off-night in three years of play, the Famous Five lost to Southern Methodist 45 to 33. The boys came back stronger than ever two nights later to collar the Yale Bulldog 53 to 30. With Hutchins, Schunk and Olson in rare form, Yale was out-classed despite the very able play of Yale's Cap- tain, Chuck Kellogg. The thriller of the entire season came in the form of the Bradley-Duquesne game. With Bradley trailing by two points Kenny Olson threw in an overhand shot from mid-court just as the gun popped. Tech scored six points in the over- time to win 49-43. Big-time holiday games out of the way, the Braves found little trouble as they won over Wabash, Wesleyan, Millikin and Knox, and then swamped the City College of New York 64 to 26. Finding the score tied at 38-38 with only two minutes to play left in the game, the Famous Five poured four shots through the hoop to conquer George Washington U 46 to 38. Schunk and Hutchins divided the scoring honors with 12 points each while Ted Panish amazed the packed house with his ball handling and defensive play. Aiming at a bid for the second straight year to the National Tournament in Madison Square Garden, New York City, the Braves seemed to improve every game. They won their third straight I. C. C. basketball title by defeating Au- gustana, Wesleyan and Millikin. The Augies provided the stiffest competition, with Panish's come-and-get-it stalling tactics aiding materially in the Bradley victory. A decisive 61-52 win over N. Y. U. sent the Braves on their way to the New York tournament. Playing Long Island U., eventual national title winners, the Braves went down in defeat after a stirring second-half rally 36 to 32.
