There is nothing in the world so daintily and delicate ornate as a soap bubble. But the worthless- ness of the beautiful bubble is in its frailty. It lasts but a second. The most precious of possessions, the things which should be se- lected with the most intelligent and discriminating care, are things that constitute the furnishings of the home, not only because they af- ford enioyment to the household in common, instead of but to one member of it, but because they are sources of enioyment for long per- iods of time. We have striven now for over forty-three years to handle such goods as are lasting and ar- tisticg that are good today and can be handed down as heir-looms to posterity. .al J .al .aff asf sa' .ai Q09 Q09 I Draperies.Shades.Rugs 3 1272 00383 6663 A1.E?lJE ll':l5':lUl: Home avings and Investment C0 H. B. DICKINSON President and General Manag Ct' NOT AN EXPERIMENT S3355EQTEZEJENSESSSITZAEZMES IHS OME may become imbued with the erroneous idea that this plan of co-operation - among consumers instead of capitalists is an experiment 3 but if theyinvestigate they will find practically the same plan in successful operation in England. For years the laboring classes of that country have been securing their own homes ' - in just this manner. Thus you see the experimental stage has been passed. Naturally, the more members we have operating and co-operating together, the sooner you will be placed in your home. Many are realizing this daily, as is shown from the fact that three times within the first year of operation the Home Savings and Investment Co. have been forced to seek larger and more commodious quarters in order to be able to handle the increase in business, and at the present time, although having just added two new rooms to their already large suite in the Y. M. C. A. Building, they have no more than is absolutely necessary. lf the plan were an experiment we might fool a few individuals, but it would be an utter impossibility and plain folly to attempt to mislead the thousands who have joined our ranks throughout Central Illinois. No! At last a suc- cessful combination of consumers has been formed that will weather all financial storms and be the final means of conferring the blessing of the ownership of their own homes on hundreds and thousands of renters who would, under any other circumstances, be forced to remain at the mercy of a landlord all their lives. mfxg f? W'e feel confident that our playful jests will not be taken in a spirit other than that in which they were written: a spirit of comradeship and respect. VVe wish to thank all those who have aided us in our work in any way, and the students in general, for their interest in our progress. VVe have striven to give you a tiny glimpse of the labor. fun and results of life at Bradley during the past year, and to make this volume interesting and worthy of the Instie tution by which it is published. The editors hope that the size of the volume will not prejudice its purchasers against it as a whole, but, taking it in its entirety, they may say that it is worthy of its college. LYDIA BRADLEY FOUNDER OF BRADLEY POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE l l 4 l I 1 i l i I l l l l r l ll Cfibllw to mrs. Bradley Q Mus. .EQ gm R:XIDI-I2X was born in Indiana, her parents having moved ' ' , . . Lvnrx Moss -la if from Ixentuekv a few vears before her birth. bhe grew up .wits ff '. . ' . . . .efrffigf .,,ffzf U'. on western soil with western customs and ideas, modihed gk'-y12 ,wr 1 'N were somewhat by the old southern habits which her family had i X brought from the land of slavery. After her marriage to Mr. Bradley, she moved to Peoria, where she lived a short time in the square house on High street, which over- looks the city, and from which she moved into her present home. During her whole life habits of thrift and industry have kept her interests close to the interests of the great mass of American people, and when she saw herself nearing her eightieth birthday, possessed of a large amount of money, and remembered that of her six children not one lived to inherit the fortune which had piled up through her frugality and her business ability, her thought went out to other children who had too little opportunity to learn the practical things of life. Mr. Bradley's death, some thirty years before, had cut short plans for building an orphan asylum in memory of their dead children. The orphan asylum idea gave place in Mrs. Bradley's mind to the Bradley Polytechnic Institute, and now, in her eighty- sixth year, she takes comfort and pride in the school she has established, because she believes it is doing good work. Mrs. Bradley's chief interest at home is her flower garden, and her choicest roses -of which she has great numbers-are often sent to the Institute upon occasions of festive gatherings. Mrs. Bradley herself frequently comes to the Institute, and as she sits upon the platform, a beautiful figure in her black silk gown, relieved by handsome lace, the students look upon her with the love akin to that they give their mothers. At home Mrs. Bradley is cordial to her friends: is ready to entertain those who delight in the Institute, whether they are former acquaintances or not: and always holds her house open for the personal friends who are fond of gathering for an evening chat. i During the eighty-five years of her life Mrs. Bradley has laid up stores of wisdom, which, united with her sturdy common sense, make her a most interesting woman, and as she sometimes gives her ideas about the vital questions of the day, every one within reach is glad to listen and to know what her keen insight and strong judgment find in the problems which this generation must work out. Long may Mrs. Bradley live to lend to us her gracious presence, her kindly thought, and her helpful word. All Bradley Institute members unite in loving and honoring the woman who has done so much for the young people of today. f if x O at LL ,f- V E A. The work has been more systemizcd and regulated hence the possibilities of rapid advance- ment are greatly increased. M.-., The student in Wfatch XVork begins his course in the .lewelry Room under competent instructors. Here he makes some of the tools needed in his work later on. From here he moves to the A B C Room, where he is expected to do certain specified work. His work is examined and mistakes corrected, and he must be able to pass an examination before he goes to the Finishing Room. Here he encounters all the difficulties that beset a watchmaker. He is taught the theory of watch construction, how to draw the mechanical parts of a watch, and engrav- ing of all kinds. The methods employed at the Horological Department are so thorough and direct that the young men who have been there during' the course of about a year or more, can find ready employment with first-class jewelry firms all over this country. Last year the demand for workmen from different departments was greater than the school could supply. These facts speak volumes for the reputation of this department of Bradley Polytechnic Institute, because of the expert workmen it turns out, and must add immensely to the influence exerted by the Institute. During' the past year the Horo- logical Department has had an average attendance of seventy-tive students. 4 + liorological 'Faculty G GRANT HHHD CRAVVFORD PHILLIPS rxw1'Rr'cTmR IN WATQH WURK 1NsTRI'c'roR IN 1ar,b:MxaNTARx' WATCH XYORK A. Through the unusual ability of I9 0 its first president, -lohn XVabeke, the society at once started 1113011 a most s11c- Q15j,Si'l cessful career. The first year the membership was small yet some excellent ii A-' 1' 40 programs were rendered. - ' . 'TV In March, 1901, Anna Tjaden became the second president. She left school a short time later which compelled her to sever relations with the society. The vacancy was filled by Edward Beimfohr. ln October, 1901, Mr. Beimfohr was re-elected president. After some energetic work by the officers Zlllfl committees. the interest, which had somewhat waned during the summer months, was rekindled and rose higher than before. Twenty persons applied for membership, most of whom were accepted. 1 ln the evening of Qlanuary .2d, the first open meeting was given. A good program was prepared and the public invited. Later the Faculty with commendable wisdom and foresight, placed the matter of a fitting celebration of the anniversary of XVashington's Birthday entirely into the hands of the society, and the next public meeting was given on February 22d. Much favorable c01111ne11t on both occasions gave the members every reason to feel that their efforts had been appreciated. Un the 2d of last March the present efiicient corps of officers was elected: Presi- dent, Yictor XYestg Vice-President, Don joseph: Secretary, Francis Neef: Treasurer, Sidney Cutright: Sergeant-at-Arms, Eugene Kenyon. These are all men of experience and ability Zllitl it is confidently to be expected that under their able leadership the society in the future will attain to even higher levels than in the past. The benefits of such an organization, to those who participate in the advantages it affords, are not to be valued lightly. It is here that perchance the slumbering talent of some future Sappho, some village Hampden, or some mute inglorious Milton may be awakened a11d find an atmosphere conducive to growth. The musical exercises give the future Calves, Carenos and Paderewskis an opportunity early to overcome that timidity which later still might prove embarrassing, even whe11 worlds bow at their feet, The plays frequently given afford the future Richard Mansnelds, joe bleffersons. Kfaud Adamses and julia Klarlows an early acquaintance with the pleasures and pains of real stage life. The practice of extemporaneous speaking will later prove a boon to many an ambitious youth stumping the field in a11 effort to satisfy his political aspirations. The practice in debating will be helpful to many a Gnothautiian in after days when, in congressional halls he will wish to vanquish an enemy to a measure introduced for the public good. To some the knowledge gained of parliamentary law will be found inval11able when by virtue of being Vice-President they will preside over the deliberations of the Senate. And the rhetorical skill acquired i11 literary coinposi- tion will be found of greatest value to others when as President of the United States of America they will prepare their annual message to Congress. In view of these facts is it not important that every aspiring student of the FE. P. I. should become a member of the Gnothautii. Then you can call for me there, and that will save your coming way up here for me. All right, Saphira -lane, jcs 'z you say, said jack. All during the week it was warm and close for early may, and Helen drooped langruidly. Saturday, she seemed especially frail and restless. Marcia moved her couch out on the cool veranda, and sat with her all morning, but at eleven she dressed to go down town, and then came back to Helen. Dear, you won't mind staying' with Mziggie, will you ? Helen looked wistful. You'll be back soon? she asked tremulously. Marcia tiushed. XVhy, dear, I did intend to be away all afternoong I promised to eo driving' with jack. Poor little Helen tried to be brave, but the thought of the long, hot aftenoon with tiresome Maggie, in spite of herself, made her tears overfiow and her lips quiver. The pathetic little struggle hurt Marcia, and she knelt down beside the couch. There, dear, kissing the frail fingers, don't look like that. It was selfish of me, I will not go if it erieves you. I'll write a note to -Iack, he'll understand, or wait-perhaps- She wrote hastily: DEM: -Iixck.-Helen is ill and restless, and I don't think I ought to leave her, unless--do you think we could possibly both go? It would do Helen worlds of good. If there should be room enough we will wait for you here, for I can't take Helen down town. Danny will bring' the answer. Forgive us, jack, for being' so troublesome. Yours, RIARCIA. llanny, the impudent son of Mollv, the cook, was dispatched with the note after having' been given full directions, and strict orders to return promptly with the answerg but Marcia waited in vain. Hue o'clock, two, three. llelen drowsed a little in the hammock under the treesl Marcia at first was angry, then hurt, then absolutely indifierentg at least she tried to convince herself that she did not care, but the hurt look still remained in her eyes. That he should not even care enough to answer. In the meantime .Iack fared no better. Promptly at two he asked for Marcia at Mrs. llastings, only to be smilingly informed by the trim little maid that Miss Marcia had not been there that day. 'lihen he drove to Pearson's, and watched the entranc: till the faces there all seemed a blur. ,Xfter he had asked once more for Marcia at Mrs. Hastings, he drove round town all afternoon, hot, perspiring, but dog.1'e,'ed, glaring savaeely into space, making desperate attempts to summon up a sickly grin for the people he knew, and trying' to convince everyone, himself included, that he was having a fine time-just hue-every bit as 'jolly as if Marcia had not broken her promise. .Xnd Danny. Uh, he came home at seveng the fifteen cents Marcia had given him, had paid for a dandy seat at the ball game. He had lost the note, but that didn't phase him, and when questioned, he lied, as a matter of course, The man wasn't in the office. so I left the letter fer him, Miss Marcia. So it rankled, and IYt-dnesday was to be Marcia's birthday. -lack had never failed to remember before, and Marcia did not realize how much his little gifts had meant to her, until she felt how commonplace this day would be without some message from I1i111. Along the forest path, the timid creatures move, Startled, alert at every new, strange sound. The violet, half-hidden 'mid green leaves In the cool shadow, lifts her lovely face, The wild-rose blossom, shy, faint-Husliingg Breaths a drowsy fragrance in the air. Upon a swaying' bough a lxoholink Pours out his little heart in sweetest eestaey: And deep within the wood, a thrush pipes So low, so sweetly tremulous, It seems the faintest breath, stirred through a sylvan flute. The orehard seatters spray of pink sea-foam, And through the moving leaves The shadows Hieker cool upon the grass. So all things sing the song, New hope, new love, new life. M. s. O U PPOSITE Bradley Campus The X Briggs Real Estate Company is building a model residence addia KNNNOF tion. It is converting 86 acres of the old Bradley farm into a place of beauty, and adding more to the surroundings of the Institute than anything that has ever been done. Institute Place has been continued IOO feet wide through the plat, and Bradley Park improved as it would not have been had this enterprising company not located here. The boys of Bradley have had an op- portunity all the spring to watch the work under way. lt belongs to engineering and also verges on landscape gardening. Sixty per cent. of the Bradley youths intend to be engineers, and in this great Peoria improve- ment they may study, if they will, a prac- tical problem, such as may one oay lie before them. Sewers and water mains, ce- ment work and asphalt paving, tree planting and the adornment of grounds are all inter- esting subjects. With hundreds of men and teams the plat will present an active scene this summer. When the fall session opens it will be completed, ready for the builder. The Briggs Real Estate Company special- izes. City plats. finished to a higher point of perfection than any other company in the country has ever brought them, are its sole business. lt is spending a half million dol- lars on the Bradley acres and furnishing a conspicuous example to Peoria of energy, system and brains.
