After the first grade cards have been sent out, plans are put into motion concerning new members. Vote after vote is cast, teachers determine their choice, grades are averaged, and senior Betas make the final decision. Of course, new members mean induction; newly inducted Betas participate in such events as serenading Mrs. Clemmer. Finally, spring arrives and suitcases are piles on a bus heading for the state convention in Nashville. The Beta Club is by no means all play for Betas work diligently in their magazine sales that their profit may be of some use to Bradley. 42 1 Beta Induction 43 National Honor Society President — Mitzi Ingle Vice-President — Dan Disharoon Secretary — Martha Hardwick Treasurer — Micky Brackin National Honor Society members hold a high place in the minds of both teachers and students. Cheerleaders The Bradley cheerleader is “a girl for all seasons.” Throughout the sweltering days of summer, the “B” girl struggles through endless practice secessions and faces any challenge presented by cneerleading camp. With the changing of the leaves the Bradley cheerleader sheds her shorts in exchange for a wool skirt and a bulky sweater. Her only means of protection from drizzling rain and nippy weather is the smile she wears constantly throughout every game. When the outside becomes too unbearably cold, the action comes inside for a game of basketball, and so does the Bradley cheerleader. Being closed in, the noise becomes louder and the excitement more intense. Who else is able to direct and inspire these cheers into team-backing but a cheerleader. The Bradley cheerleader is not just a part of a group, but an individual who does her ‘'damdest” to maintain Bradley’s spirit and support her team through defeat and victory, and victory, and victory . . . Sandy Cox, Senior Janice Stamey. Junior Debra Carilhers. It was plowing the field with sweat and blood in the 95 degree heat and wondering what crop would grow from it ... It was pride so deep it hurt to do anything but win ... It was Coach Allen after a victory not being able to put his feelings into words, but not having to because, like the unit they are, the Bears knew what he meant ... It was college scouts watching practice and talking to the coaches . . . It was after the last game seeing a senior tackle who just 10 minutes ago had mangled an opposing half back, wash the blood from his face with tears because it was his last game ... It was the day after the season ended, pads turned in and talk of the prospects for next season. ’68 Varsity 104 Defensive Team Back Coach - David Cawood Defensive Coach - Rick Barker Head Coach — Bob Allen Offensive Line Coach — Sherold Walker 105 Offensive Team Managers: T. Their overpowering urge to win has whittled their opponents down to their size . . . From the opening toss of the ball to the final horn, the Bears demonstrate their prowess ... To see the Bears in action proves the reason for their winning season . . . Determination has made this group the best in the history of Bradley basketball. Senior Bears . . . Jones fights for possession of the ball as teammate Kirkpatrick awaits. Williams shows his skill. Ensley demonstrates his acrobatic ability. 116 Sock it to ’em! Bottom-Heavy????! Two points pain. 117 Future Bears 119 1968-69 Bearettes Whoever believes that basketball is a game “for males only’ has certainly never observed the Bradley Bearettes on the floor . . . Through “delicate maneuvers,” the Bearettes outsmart their opponents . . . With deft hands, the girls pass that ball as well as any professionals . . . Under the leadership of one senior girl, the Bearettes astonish all onlookers with their collection of points . . . At the end of the season. Bradley will lose only one graduating player; therefore, next season's rewards may be as fruitful as those of 1968-69. Debbie Stamey. Senior Forward 120 Baseball ’68 “Play ball” is the word as the Bradley baseball team emerges from the dugout . . . The hours of practice are now put to the test . . . Many bats will be swung . . . Many pitches will be thrown ... A few errors made and a few homeruns hit . . . The togetherness of a team is shown in a sweaty hand patting a teammate’s back or maybe just a “tough luck, we’ll get ’em next time!” . . . But win or lose, always the Bear Diamond-men will portray the Bradley courage and pride. Track 68 After three-fourths of the year is spent in sixth period study hall, the coach announces that the cinder trail is ready to be run. The gold sweatsuits and track uniforms are distributed. The hours spent on the track in practice . . . the thousands of untimed starts and 440’s . . . Thoughts of not running the first lap too fast, have to keep in the circle on this throw, or must fall forward on this jump are what run through the minds of the Cinder-men just before the gun is fired . . . Wanting to slow down, your lungs bum and your legs ache ... Is it worth it? Your question is answered as the ribbon snaps across your chest. X; The most important person in the world — The Individual His thoughts, fears, and dreams make up the world . . . His dreams become reality and form the future world . . . But outside of the value of experience gained, these students have acquired deep insight into people and the benefits of cooperation. This year’s annual staff will go away with memories of happy hours spent together in work and fun, memories of uncontrollable laughter, and memories of what seemed like insurmountable obstacles. They will leave more sure of themselves and their individuality and with sadness at the knowledge that those past times will return no more. 218 Valerie Hyberger Music. Editor’s Epilogue As the main door of Bradley Central High closes behind the individual, a whole new world opens before him. The hours, days, and even years spent within the walls of this institution strengthen his character and prepare that student for the waiting world. While at Bradley, the individual treads the halls with a sureness in his step and a purpose in his heart. As an underclassman, he merely looks out the window of life while he receives the training and education needed to succeed in that world outside Bradley. When he finally passes through the door, he must leave behind irresponsibility and expand the cloak of knowledge he received at Bradley. A student of Bradley High, whether he be of the past, present, or future, cannot leave this place without some feeling of accomplish- ment. With the help of faculty and friends this student becomes more aware of his responsibilities, his ambitions, and his need to be himself. He must retain the qualities which make him; he must remain an Individual. But who is this unique personality. My friend. You are the individual! Debbie Greene.
