The Annual Staff Bradley Central High School proudly presents the 1965 OCOEEAN Staff Heads Rebecca Kyker editor-in-chief Jerrie Lawson assistant editor Jody Crumb liss business manager Joe Donaldson assistant business manager Mary Margaret A bel senior section editor Charles Ledford sports editor Abe Lillard music editor Gary Fletcher art editor Charles Ledford student photographer 2 Mrs. Tom An ants faculty advisor Life—even the few years we stu- dents have lived—is a series of roads . . . trails and footpaths, winding lanes, main thorough- fares, bypasses, and many, many detours. Sometimes our travel seems aimless, but occasionally the direction emerges, clear and unmistakable. During high school, at least, one such direction is distinct: to advance along the way that leads to a diploma. There are as many such roads as there are students, all avenues dif- fering as do their travelers. For Seniors, the ends of our roads are in sight. For underclassmen, the next few miles are hidden. Yet, a measure of all our journeys has been completed; and it is re- corded here especially for us, the wayfarers. Therefore, the theme of the 1965 OCOEEAN could be 3 none other than . . . HIGHWA TS 4 Map Introduction Administration and Faculty Classes seniors juniors sophomores freshmen Services Organizations Music Departments Sports Features Senior Histories Advertisements 5 6 TOURIST ATTRACTIONS . . . and as near as the gymnasium. Contacts with fellow travelers include friendly, informative conversations with our principal . . . 9 . . . and with our classmates. Students take time out from their studies to make a road trip. (All right, for the last time— who’s hiding the road map in his shako?) 10 Cheerleaders pave the way for school spirit with exuberance . . . . . . and much thought. 11 ADMINISTRA TION AND FACULTY Without guiding signs, the world’s maze of highways would be confusing and dangerous. The Administration and Faculty devote their time and their labor to the posting of such signs for younger travelers. Occasionally, their warning signs are not heeded; but most students soon learn to appreciate the concern of the more experienced. The journeys of all who attend Bradley are made easier by the influence of her adult leaders. DON WILSON MISS MARY RUTH WOODS sassviD For the students, all roads lead to Brad- ley . . . graveled, paved, muddy, dusty . . . traversed on foot, by car, or in schoolbuses . . . approached eagerly, hesitantly, or unwillingly. Early or late ( Has the second bell rung?”) each ar- rives, and the day begins. SENIORS Senior year . . . the road suddenly be- comes two, and the senior treads the one which winds away from high school. During this glorious term, the highway under foot seems wide; the clover leaf ahead, small and easily con- quered. It is only when graduation ap- proaches that the vision changes. The path behind him dwindles in size, and the graduate steps out upon the mighty mainstream. For the freshmen the journey is not near completion; for the sophomores their goal is in reality far more distant than they can comprehend; for the juniors theirs is the task of traveling those last miles without automobile breakdowns or gasoline shortage. Without these staffs, Bradley roads would become a puzzling maze, for the administration would find it difficult to direct the heavy traffic properly. It is always more pleasant to journey in caravans. Bradley’s organizations give students the chance to associate with and find friends among fellow travelers. 12) SEA T ED: Jones, Holmes, Giles, Granadc, McDowell; STAND- ING: Goodwin, Scog- gins, Kendrick, Gaylor, Cox, Gibson, Mrs. Neal. Art Club Physical Education MUSIC DEPARTMENT High up ill the school, the band assembles for the first football game of the season. The last scurrying stragglers melt into their seats; the unintelligible whirs of the concert B flat scale are hesitantly sounded against the un- steady shuffle of feel outside in the dark. Eventually a line begins to form; and once again, eighty-five slim, blackened silhouettes traverse the familiar dusky hall and stairway. Emerging from the building, they continue along the shadowed path behind the bleach- ers, and then to the glittering field itself. The drums have long since begun their rhythmic messages, to which white-clad feet softly pound a constant echo into the earth below. Row after row of silent figures merge into a single slender strand beneath the brilliance of a hundred shining lights. At the announcement of the National Anthem, the entire audience slowly rises against the sky, automatically hushing its vague murmurings. The drums pause and begin an impressive nervous tattoo; the director’s silvery baton cuts through the cool air; and then . . . the band begins to play. —Gail Kerr, 1962 Alumna Don Wilson, Director John Martin, Drum Major; Gayle Tucker, Head Majorette; Jody Crumbliss, Assistant Drum Major. David Walker 174 By usual standards, the Bears 3—7 season was sub-par for a Bradley team. However, statistics do not tell the complete story of the “toughest 32”. Injuries to 12 of the 20 Bear regulars caused the team to be out-manned all year. These injuries often caused the offensive attack to be impotent and placed added pressure on the fre- quently out-sized defense. Despite these and other handicaps, Bradley hit hard and fought constantly. In the season finale, the Bears battled Kingsport to a near stand- still before bowing finally 18—0. Bradley’s strong showing dropped the Indians to sec- ond place in the A.P. poll and allowed Maryville to capture the state title. 175 Baseball (L—R) Wayne Richardson, Gerald Burns, Mitchell Green, Coach Lebron Montgomery, Alan Sutherland, Mike Fitzgerald, and Bo Davis (L—R) Jim Cannon, Donnie Gill, Mike Hoskins, Coach Gordon Suttlcs, Artie Ellis, Steve Slack, John Davis, Leland Brock Snap Crackle Pop 176 Track FRONT (L—R) Green, Jones, Maples, Lawson, Freeman, Goins, Bryson, Gill, Bishop, Tor- rence; BACK Maupin, Cooper, Murphy, Blanchard, Baker, Johnson, Wilson, Boehmer, Plcmmons, Dodson. The 1964-1965 Bradley Bear hoopsters were probably the finest team Coach Bill Walker has assembled since the State Championship team of 1962. The Bears ended regular season play with a 19—4 record, beating each opponent at least once ex- cept for Kingston who topped Bradley by only two points in their only meeting. The Bears posted wins over such highly-touted teams as Knox Fulton, Chattanooga City, Brainerd, Central, Oak Ridge and Union City. Bradley’s leading scorer was Jimmy Cannon, a second team all-stater, and the lead- ing-rebounder was jumping-jack Terry Scott. Close behind in both departments were David Montgomery and Wayne Richardson who were consistent but often unheralded, the fifth starter was Artie Ellis, who was often spelled capably by Cecil Ruth. Gerald Bums, Mitchell Geren and Lamont Lowe also saw much action. In the District 10 Tournament, the Bears waited until the championship finals to look their best. Bradley completely humbled host team McMinn 74—50 on the fine play sparked by Cannon, Richardson and Scott, members of the All-District team. In the Region Tournament, the Bears opened up their quest of that title by crush- ing Sale Creek 107—50. Bradley’s title hopes rested on their semi-final contest with Chattanooga City. These hopes were crushed by a 53—39 victory for City. 186 Tournament Team: Coaches Suttle and Smiddy, Hancock, Ownby, Montgomery, M. Cox, Watson, Hysinger, DeLay, Graham, Brock, Gcren, Ensley, B. Cox. Coach Jim Smiddy’s Bearettes enjoyed another fine season, as they finished the regular campaign with only one loss to Walland in the Maryville Invitational Tourna- ment. Forming the back-bone of the team were forward Jane Brock and All-State guard Alice Hancock, the two returning starters. Two tall senior guards, Mary Lou Cox and Nancy Hysinger, along with sophomore Rita Geren, helped make the Bearettes one of the state’s toughest defensive teams. Trecia Watson and Martha Montgomery, sophomores, completed the offensive unit with their shooting and fine rebounding. All six of the Bradley starters made the All-District team. In tournament play, the girls waltz over Calhoun, Etowah and Englewood to their seventh or eighth consecutive District 10 Title. In the regional, Bradley downed City and Cumberland Co. to clinch another trip to the State tournament. Chances seemed fine that the Bearettes would improve their second in the state finish of 1964.
