Editor in L.nu) Business Manuka Faculty Advisor jpi-RSON 5WMey INTRO As you turn the pages of The Bradley Story” for 1963, read, mark, and inwardly digest that these scenes will not live for a stranger; nor will the copy printed here give inspiration to one who has not participated in the numerous activi- ties emblazed on these pages. In essence the book has no theme except the theme of Bradley’s life, its people and its spirit, what it is doing and what it is trying to do. The sophisticated and blase’ will turn their heads with a so-what” attitude at what they see here; the serious will evaluate this collection of mementos, the sentimentalist will feel a twinge of sadness or nostalgia. TABLE OF INTRODUCTION ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS duction It is our sincere hope that you will be proud of this book, and in twenty years you will be able to take it off your bookshelf, blow off a little dust and commence reading, to rediscover Bradley— 1963. To the Seniors we say, this was your year, and essentially this is your book. To the Under- classmen we say without your contributions to Bradley, its campus and its life, in this most won- derful of all years, the OCOEEAN would be mighty slim reading. We present this book as a resume’ of your progress to date and a preview of your year or years to come. May they be as mem- orable as this one has been. CONTENTS ATHLETICS MUSIC DEPARTMENT FEATURES ADVERTISEMENTS David Spenser, Carolyn Cooley, and Larry Stewart find a variety of reading material at their destina- tion. Both the Business and Editorial Staffs met prior to the tour to be briefed on the afternoon’s schedule. In preparing the Bradley Story for 1963, the OCOEEAN Staff did research and visited many institutions of business and education to acquire material, information, data, and background for this student undertaking. Many business places were most cooperative and permitted the year book personnel the use of their facilities as well as conversing for hours over coffee and Coke. Here are the highlights of the tour: Gail Dorflinger, Diana Smith, and Martha Lafferty discovered that just looking at beautiful clothes would never do. Inquiring about a popular style of shoe are Janet McLain, Joan Car- roll, and Mary Jo Stuart. ■m Jo Geren, Bill Cleghorn, and Ronald Hines admire one of Cleveland’s many attractive window displays. Learning about some of the facilities for improving physical fitness are Joy Hurst, Susan Arnold, and Janie Chesney. 5 Sam Hope, Jo Ann Fisher, and Jane Sadler receive information concerning jewelry. Not getting married are you Sam? Junior Representatives, Susan Arnold and Johnny Reynolds, trying out the position to be vacated by this year’s Editor and Business Manager. Seen evaluating the tour are Bill Arnold, Faculty Sponsor Mr. Ross Apperson, and Dottie Abel. Yes, we must confess the excursion was a bit trying for one individual. The CONN-cert is over. One chapter of “The Bradley Story” completed. Not pictured: Johnny Reynolds, Gary Godfrey, Jane Stark, Bud Hall, Max Finkle. Earl Williams, and Robert Herndon. Much of the Bradley Story is observed as students enter and leave the battered build- ing that houses approximately nineteen hundred students and teachers. The screech- ing of bus brakes and the tolling of the bells which indicate that classes have begun or ended lends an eerie, and yet a much antici- pated, feeling of jubilance for the beginning and the ending of a day’s accomplishments. Here are typical scenes from a day in “The Bradley Story.” A class in English. Could hardly wait to leave those horrible classes. But, what now? ■ I Se Guidance and understanding are requisites which are part of any story. “The Bradley Story” is no exception. Teachers, bus drivers, and other personnel take great pride in assisting students in class work and problems other than those found at school. A class in typing develops speed and acuracy in a profession for the future. In addition to the problems of Assistant Principal, Mrs. Lee Clemmer also instructs a class in Latin. Messy, but a natural state of affairs. The Big Wheels—I’m a paying customer, aren’t I? More of the Bradley story may be witnessed on the campus where attitudes of happiness and Comradeship prevail. Whether it be waiting for a bus, flexing one’s muscles, taking time out for a Coke, or “choosing up” for a game of touch football, it all amounts to the reflection of the “esprit de corps.” Making like the Big team. The long wait—5 minutes seems like forever. This book is the 1963 OCOEE AN — it is a message of heart-felt appreciation for those who give seemingly of unlimited ability, devotion, sympathy, and energy. In this 1963 Story of Bradley we cannot estimate the great value of our Administration. 12 tdmirti ttCLticM Principal Assistant Principal Librarian Office Secretary Athletic Secretary 13 Mr. William Schultz, Principal Mrs. Lee Clemmer, Assistant Principal 14 Mrs. Howard Martin Office Secretary SECRETARIES AND LIBRARIAN Mrs. Matt Ellis Athletic Secretary Sc U m Otis Miller Ray Ledford Secretary Treasurer The largest and most important portion of the Bradley Story is contained in these pages — The individuals who make up our classes, make up our story. This year, under the direction of Mr. Lawrence Kresse, Troupe Twenty of the National Thespian Society presented four one-act plays, representing each class at Bradley. The plays were judged, and awards were given to the best actors, supporting actors, director, and play. The best play was Aria Da Capo”, a poetic drama with both comic and tragic qualities. It was presented by the senior class, and from it David Spencer was chosen as the recipient of the best actor award. The best actress was Gretchen Schow, a member of the cast of For All Eternity , the comical ghost story presented by the junior class. Cathy McConnell, because of her excellent performance in the sophomore comedy Are We Dressing? , became the best supporting actress. The freshman class presented And the Desert Shall Rejoice”, a modern Christmas story that is both tender and humorous, and freshman Monty Miller was selected the best supporting actor. In the spring' the Thespians plan to produce a Shakespearean comedy, either A Mid- summer Night’s Dream or Twelfth Night . Such a play will require much work from each member of the Thespian Society in order to present a work of William Shakespeare in such a way that it can be enjoyed by the student body and therefore fulfill the purpose of the Society, which is to present different types of dramatic art to the students at Bradley. flutUwi @ MMAetlonA Sponsors: Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Newman, Mr. Carter Members: Lowe, Conner, Pruett, Green, Smithson, Hickman, Hotalen, Kile, Ownby, McAlister, Fortner Secretary—Phyllis Fortner President—Marquetta Green Vice-President—Juanita Ownby Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Newman, Mr. Carter Treasurer—Charlene Smithson The newest organization at Bradley is Junior Counsellors. Outstanding teams and coaches are trade-marks for the Grizzly Bears. cutd ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Mr. Bill Walker Could the “Triple Crown” teams from the Sports Capital of Tennessee do it again this year? Could a football team which had lost such powerhouses as Steve Sloan, David Tyrrell, William Senters, and the always ready reserve—Dennis Ruth—could this new team go all the way? Could a boys’ basketball team which was plagued by a half-ill coach and had lost seven of its mainstays—three of whom were All-State—could this team make the rough grade to Vanderbilt again? Could a girls’ basketball team which had lost two-thirds of its starting contingent travel the rough road past Murfreesboro once more? These were the questions on the minds of sports fans all over the State of Tennessee as the 1962-63 athletic teams took to the gridirons and courts all across the state. Regardless of the outcome, these inquisitive dopesters were destined to see some of the best fought games in the state at Jimmie Lovell Field and the Bradley High School Gymnasium. This was a good year for Bradley sports. No “Triple Crown,” but—can there ever be another one? These are the results. This is how it happened in Bradley Sports. 132 HERE COME THE BEARS! Head Coach Harold Henslee and Line Coach Bob Davis Co-Captain Bill Almond and Captain Johnny Evans (Not pictured, Co-Captain Larry Link) 133 BRADLEY 40, TYNER 0—Big Andy Ballinger drew first blood for the “Grizzly” Bears of Bradley with only five minutes gone in the 1962 season. Despite a Bear defense which was not up to par, the first half saw the demons of Bradley out in front 27-0. Coach “Red” Henslee then “cleaned the bench” in the remaining periods, as the Bears blitzed the Hilltoppers 40-0. The dominant factor in the game was the realization by Bradley fans that the “Riflemanless” Bears weren’t “Riflemanless” after all. Little junior quarterback Tommy Childers showed his football prowess all night by good play selection and sparkling runs and passing at crucial periods. Captain Johnny Evans received the honor of AP Blocker of the Week in the state. Along with Evans, Ricky Carroll played a great game at the guard spot. BRADLEY 20, OAK RIDGE 33—Before the 1962 season opened for Bradley, Coach Henslee asked that the ’62 Bear squad be dubbed “Grizzly” Bears instead of “Golden”. He went on to say that if the “Grizzly” Bears beat Oak Ridge, his Bears could be renamed the Golden Bears of Bradley. Consequently, when the final whistle sounded that September night, the Bears remained the “Grizzly” Bears of Bradley. However, as any of the estimated 10,000 will validate, the Bears were grizzly even though they came up on the short end of the 33-20 score. Since Bradley had taken the AP Championship title from the Ridgers last year, this game was slated to be a grudge battle. The fired-up Wildcats roared in the opening seconds with a 78-yard TD scamper by senior tailback David Smith. However, the Bears bounced back with a long sus- tained drive which ended with a touchdown pass from Childers to Peterson. Wilson’s PAT was valid and the first quarter score showed the two powers tied 7-all. Nevertheless, the Cats were not to be beaten or tied as they came back with two TD’s in the second period and 2 TD’s in the fourth period. Bradley was only able to muster two touchdowns other than their first period marker and the score was left in the Ridger’s favor. BRADLEY 34, FULTON 6—The Bears ground out a 34-6 victory over Knox Fulton for the second Bradley conquest of the season. The stalwart heroes of the Tyner game—Link, Ballinger, Peterson, Lemons, and Norton—combined with new faces—Cawood, Bigham, and Huffman—to conquer the Falcons. Coach Henslee lauded his big team for their improve- ment in play compared to the previous week’s defensive depression. Lemons scored the first two TD’s of the game in the first quarter. His first run was a 30-yard drive through the Falcon’s stiff forward wall, while his second TD was a 5-yard plunge, which Richard Norton had set up by intercepting a Fulton pass and returning the pigskin to the Falcon 5. Other Bears breaking into the scoring column were Norton in the second period and Ballinger, one TD in the third period and another in the fourth period. BRADLEY 25. YOUNG 19—Things looked bad for the Black and Gold as they left the field at halftime trail- ing 19-6. The big single-wing of the Yellow Jackets under the expert command of All-State Tommy Flenniken seemed invincible during the initial three quarters, but their invincibility was brought to an abrupt end in the final quarter. Mid-way in the third quarter, Tommy Childers plunged across the goal line from one yard out. This followed a beautiful 20-vard pass from Childers to Link and an ensuing 45-yard jaunt by Link which placed the ball well within scoring position. On their next series of downs the Yellow Jackets were forced to surrender the ball to the tough Bradley line. On the first play from scrimage, Ballinger blasted through the Jackets’ defense for a thrilling 58-yard touchdown run. Wilson’s PAT was invalid and the score was left 19-18, Young’s favor, at the end of the third period. Young was unable to build any threat in the fourth quarter, but the alert Bears were able to cross the line for the winning TD as scatback Tommy Bigham ran the ball over from 22 yards out. Wilson’s extra point was good and the final score was 25-19 Bradley. 134 BRADLEY 13, RED BANK 6—As usual, the Red Bank Lions came to Cleveland loaded for Bear meat. They were to leave without, however, as Bradley’s hosses squeaked by 13-6. The first half was strictly a defensive performance for both teams, as no serious threat was mustered by either team. Near the end of the third period, big 185-pound full- back Richard Norton drove to the Lions’ 4-yard line only to fumble and have the Lions take over. Two plays later, however, the big fullback redeemed himself by recovering a Lion fumble on the same spot. Norton went across on the next series of plays to place the first score of the game on Bradley’s side of the board. Wilson’s PAT was valid. On the resulting kickoff, the Lions’ Bill Wilhoit returned the ball for 90 yards and 6 points for Red Bank. Their extra point went awry and the third period ended at 7-6 Bradley. Childers put the clincher on in the final minutes of the game when he ended a long 70-yard sustained drive with a one-yard paydirt plunge. BRADLEY 12, McCALLIE 21—This was the worst game Bradley had played in years. Mistake followed mistake and McCallie capitalized on all. There were only two bright spots for Bradley—one was a brilliant defensive stand by Bradley on the one- foot line in the closing minutes; the second was the award-winning Marching Band that displayed their fine abilities which were to give them a No. 1 rating. Bradley’s first score came after a seven-play drive starting on McCallie’s 14-yard line. One of Bradley’s fatal mistakes occurred on McCallie’s 12 as Ballinger tried to pick up a first down by pitching out. The ball was intercepted by the Tornado’s quarterback Art Vann and carried 88 yards for a touchdown. Bradley’s final tally started on their own 40 with Nor- ton ending it on a two-yard plunge. The defensive stand- outs were Bud Hall with 18 tackles and Earl Williams with 19. They were also the stalwarts in the goal line stand along with junior letterman Bob Johnson. BRADLEY 2, CENTRAL 25—The opening minutes looked like Bradley all the way, but Central was not to be downed with the state championship in their grasp. Bradley’s score came in the first seconds of the game as a fired-up defense capitalized on a Central blunder to rack up a safety and their only score of the game. Bradley’s biggest threat, as in the Sloan Era, was the throwing arm of quarterback Tommy Childers. Childers hit an impressive number of his aerials—12 out of 25. Central’s big gun was Terry Park who continually hit the Bradley line for considerable yardage. Bradley’s only consolation was that they had played a good game against what looked to be the state champions of Tennessee. BRADLEY 39, CITY 7—The Bears returned to the winning column after a two-week absence by trouncing the City Dynamo 39 to 7. Big Handy Andy drew blood twice for Bradley on passes from Childers and ensuing runs of 65 and 58 yards. This was a night of thrills for fans as they saw an unheard-of fullback Ronnie Murphy display great apt- ness in the running department, and they saw quarter- back Childers not only kick PAT’s but kick them left- footed. David Cawood entered the scoring ranks by blasting 55 yards in 5 carries for the final tally of the game. 135 BRADLEY 28, KNOX RULE 13—Bradley racked up 28 points to slide Rule as Cawood led the scoring with two touchdowns. The first score for the Bears was a 3-yard run by Murphy. The extra point by Wilson was good and the final quarter ended 7-0 Bradley. Rule slid back in the second quarter to score two TD’s and end the half in their favor 13-7. Cawood scored first in the second half with a 24- yard blast in the final minutes of the third stanza. His second tally came 5 minutes later on a 5-yard plunge. Childers and Ballinger entertained fans in the last few seconds with a razzle-dazzle TD which cemented the victory. Childers handed the ball to Ballinger who, unable to move the ball, tossed it back to Childers who scored as the horn blew. BRADLEY 39, McMINN 0— Dedicated to the Golden Bears of 1961 The Cherokee has had its day And old Coach Henderson has had his say, For the Grizzly Bear was in his lair Waiting to pull that Cherokee’s hair. November 9th was a new story, The Bears took home all the glory. Two thousand Bears from Bradley High Watched that dirty Indian die. For revenge is sweet as most folk know And a scalped Indian did homeward go, Back to the mountains of McMinn Co. Back without wampum or cherished bounty For the Red-Headed Bear has had his say And the d—ed Cherokee has lost the day. , “Ross the Hoss” POWER BOWL BRADLEY 19, NOTRE DAME 21— PATs proved invaluable as they produced the only difference in the final outcome. Each team crossed the goal line three times, but only one team completed all of the extra points. Bradley’s TD’s came from a hard 13-yard run by Cawood, a 35-yard pass from Childers to Link, and a 1- yard plunge by Childers. Fans saw Andy Ballinger make his last great play for the Black and Gold in the final minutes as he jumped high to capture the ball from three big Irishmen. This was to be his last play in his high' school career for he injured his hip and had to be taken to the hospital. 136 QUARTERBACKS — Jim Wilson, Tommy Childers, Bill Evans, Bucky Geren, LEFT HALFBACKS — Eugene Cabrera, Tom Bigham, Franklin Lemons, Joe Starnes. The young 1963 cagers from Bradley County were left holding the State Champion- ship Crown with only one remaining starter. Gary Godfrey, a 6' 4 forward, was the remaining sparkle of the ’62 Crown. The Bears, as a result, were plagued by inexperience. Bud Hall and Terry Stanfield are two other returnees from the State Championship Squad, who are expected to display their talents in the 1962-63 season for the Golden Bears along with the promising young cagers: Dennis Baker, Robert Babb. Gary Stevison, John Robinson, Ronnie Stratton, Keys Fillauer, Butch Asbury Pannell IV, Jerry Dunn, and Jimmy Wilson. The Bears will, of course, miss the outstanding performances of Steve Sloan and Lloyd Hewett, but they are expected to come up with another great tournament team behind the outstanding coaching of Bill Walker. 142 Dennis Baker Junior Forward Terry Stanfield Junior Guard Gary Godfrey, Captain Senior Center and Forward Bud Hall Senior Guard and Forward Robert Babb Junior Guard Johnny Robinson Junior Forward Butch Pannell Junior Center ‘S vietteA Jane Brock, Mary Lou Cox, Carolyn Elrod, Nancy Hysinger, Alicia Nerron, Alice Hancock, Sandra Downs, Dionne Barger, Elaine Owenby, Fonda Bramlett, Janice Cash, Kay Bivens, Elaine Hammod, Coach Jim Smiddy, Doris Montgomery, Co-Captain; Margaret May, Audrey Dixon, Gracie May, Captain. The outstanding playing of the Bearettes this year has classed them as one of the leading contenders for the Girls’ State Title. They have four jewels of last year’s royal crown back this year: Gracie May, Doris Montgomery, Kay Bivens, and Elaine Owenby. This year the crowds are eagerly awaiting the unknown potentials of the Bearettes. The underrated Doris Montgomery is proving to be a big gun in our offense which was carried by Sylvia Lauderdale and Mable Delay last year. The amazing defense of Gracie May and Kay Bivens has been converted to a double-threat at forward position. These two have already made their names heard in the Bradley and State sports circles. The girl’s story would be incomplete without mentioning the expert coaching of Jim Smiddy, who has one of the best records in the State. Good luck, Bearettes! Bradley’s “B” team, however, is an exception. This, of course, coincides with Bradley’s famous tradition of producing superior athletic teams. As our memorial to Bradley ’63 goes to press, the Bradley Cubs sport a 14-0 unblemished record. This is a unique record at Bradley for “B” teams are usually drained of their potential stars in favor of the varsity teams. These outstanding team victories should be accredited to the hustle and spirit of all the members of the team. They have shown their abilities and knowledge of basketball all through the year. Praise should also be donned upon Coach Montgomery who is making his maiden voyage at the helm of the talented Bear Cubs. It goes without saying that a good team needs a good coach to be successful. The OCOEEAN would like to express its felicitations to the Coach and his team for their past victories and their conquests to come. The band prepares weekly football shows during the marching season: however, when concert season comes, the band’s attention turns to more serious compositions. Stanley Wright, who came to Bradley three years ago. is the director of all these musical groups. Sam Hope is the student conductor: Dottie Abel and Nancy Stevens are the field conductors.
