Lincoln paid tribute to the Northern dead at Gettysburg. Here is the best of the tributes to the Southern dead, first pronounced, like the Gettysburg Address, above the graves of those it honored. The author, a gifted poet, was himself a casualty of the war. Though he survived the struggle, he died soon afterward of tuberculosis as a result of exposure and undernourishment during the war. ODE by Henry Timrod Sleep sweetly in your humble graves, Sleep martyrs of a fallen cause; Though yet no marble column craves The pilgrim here to pause. In seeds of laurel in the earth The blossom of your fame is blown, And somewhere, waiting for its birth, The shaft is in the stone!
