We, the OCOEEAN Staff of 1952, hope that through our theme, A Birthday Party, we can bring back pleasant memories of our unforgettable days at Bradley. In the following sections we have strived to carry out the theme in the pictures of the various activities of our school. In the first section the faculty is featured as OUR HOSTS and our dedication, Mrs. Campbell, is the HONORED GUEST. They are introduced on the division page by snapshots in their familiar poses. The classes represent OUR INVITED GUESTS. On the di- vision page is shown some of our most distinguished” guests in candid poses. Next, are the outstanding students, the SUPERLATIVES, who were the ones receiving prizes. We were fortunate to have so many celebrities at our party. You will find them pictured in OUR BEAUTY SECTION. The section, WE ATE THESE UP, shows the activities of school we liked best—the clubs. On the division page we have pictures of events that happened in the individual clubs. Our athletics are featured in the GAMES WE PLAYED. We hope this section will remind you of the good times we spent at our football and basketball games. The last part, THE ADVERTISEMENTS, makes it possible for us to have this twenty-eighth edition of the OCOEEAN. Pauline Campbell We dedicate this annual in To one whom we admire and love someone is you You've been our inspiration in The learning we've pursued OFFICE WORKERS The following students work in the office during their study hall periods, in order to get experience in this field. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Class Officers: President, Dennis Olson; Vice-President, Bill Wilson; Secretary, Rachel Denman; Treasurer, Joe Lay. CLASS HISTORY One hundred sixty-nine of us finally became dignified seniors when we came oack to Bradley last August. One of the first important events was the election of new members into the National Honor Society. Those elected were Barbara Caylor, Rheba Fern Clabo, Joyce Davenport, Rachel Denman, Wayne Hampton, Norma Johnson, David Jones, Johnie Jones, Peggy Lawson, Shirley Lemons, Betty Mitchell, Mary Nell Randolph, Bobbie Samples, Danah Smith, Bob Stickley, Mary Thompson, Joyce Wooden, and Jo Wyatt. By the time a very successful football season was completed, it was time to see our outstanding seniors perform on the basketball court. We were especially proud of our boys and girls during the tournaments. Bill Wilson, Clyde Kyle, Bill Bacon, Robbie Withrow, and Jane Hicks made the district team; while Clyde, “Quincy” McDowell, Bill Wilson, Robbie and Jane made the regional team. “Quincy” went on to make the state team, while Clyde was voted an outstanding player by the sportswr'iters of the state. Then came the senior play “I Remember Mama.” Delores Moore and P. B. Abel made a wonderful mama and papa. Others who were outstanding were Buddy Rhodes, Mary Nell Randolph, Dennis Olson, and Patsy Hampton. SENIOR CLASS PAUL BURTON ABEL—Football 2, 3; Hi-Y 3, 4; Spanish I-II 2, 3. Treasurer 2. BILL VEST MELBA WADE PHILLIP WAGER ROY WATKINS WANDA SUE WATKINS BILL WILSON ROBBIE WITHROW JOYCE WOODEN JO WYATT As I, Zandora, look into the future, I see in my crystal ball the alumni of ’52 making plans to attend a party be- ing given for the class. I see Dennis Olson, class president, who is now an admiral in the Confeder- ate Navy, chartering a Delta Air Lines’ plane in Paris to journey back to the States for the class reunion. He notices Jo Ann and J. T. Haun, the renowned explorers, who are re- turning for the reunion after their ex- pedition to the moon. While telling fas- cinating tales of the moon, a booming blast interrupted their conversation. It was only Jimmy Law and his wife, Ed- na, speeding along in an atomic jet. On this trip the stewardesses Da- nah Smith, Rhoda Foster, Bobbie Clay- ton, Nancy Petty, and Dorothy Hooper are keeping the passengers supplied with “Banana Cola,” manufactured by the Banana Cola Company of Jerusa- lem. This fabulous company is owned and operated by Rabbis Brewster, Odom, and Stickley. The plane lands in New York for re- pairs. The mechanics Beany Lilliard, Don Keith, and Myles Guy. say it will take overnight to ready the plane for the long journey to the Capital of the Confederacy, as you all know, located in Cleveland, Tenn. Since Dennis has plenty of time for loafing, he decides to look up some of his old friends. I see the Sports Ga- zette office, where he finds Patsy Hampton, Barbara Caylor, Peggy Law- son, and Claire deBarros writing arti- cles on the Rebel Trotters, a razzle- dazzle ball club consisting of Bob Gib- son, Bill Wilson, Odell Swafford, Hoyt Teague, and Buddy Rhodes. Walking down the street, he no- tices Mary Nell Randolph coming out of the Fifth Avenue Beauty Salon, which is managed by Bobbie Samples. She in- forms Dennis that Doris Dooley, Betty Miller, Mary Clementson, and Wilma McCulley are excellent hair stylists em- ployed by this establishment. As he boards the subway, he over- hears Barbara Gregg, Mabel Bishop, Genevieve Lawson, Polly Haney, Betty Brown, Betty Montgomery, and Frances Hamilton planning to go to “Playboy” Garner’s nightclub, “the Peach Blos- som,” for dining and dancing. On down the street he sees Sally Dooley, Jane Hicks, Margaret Swingle, and Margie Kitts coming out of SAKS with new formals designed by Mary Thompson. Having heard that they are featuring Ramona Petit and Barbara Shell doing the hula dance at the “Peach Blossom,” he decides to ask Sally Dooley if she would give him the pleasure of escorting her to the night club. Just as they get there they see Peggy. Hurst, Pat Green, and Jerrian McClanahan rushing in to their jobs as cigarette girls. First on the program is the familiar voice of Polly Nicholson, accompanied by the “Ivory Ticklers,” Rheba Clabo, and Joe Lay, singing “Bill.” After eating, they are enter- tained with a floor show featuring the Gayety Girls, Jo Ann Humberd, Joyce Davenport, Given Spradley, and Bar- bara Sharp. After calling a taxi, they leave the “Peach Blossom” early to attend a con- cert at Carnegie Hall. (Who should be driving the taxi but Calvin Brock!!) They are very much enthused with the magnificent performances of Bertha Hamilton, Audrea Sperlich, Norma Johnson, and Betty Mitchell. While there they see Delores and Tommy Newman with their three red-headed children. The little boys, being twins, have been named “Flip” and “Flop.” The little girl is “Freckles.” Having spent such an exciting night, he is ready to return to the hotel where he is staying. He is surprised to see Ronald Snyder, the owner of the hotel. The next morning when Dennis goes down to the Coffee Shop for break- fast, he sees Jean Collette, receptionist, and Florene Dobson, Joyce Orr, Patsy North, and Jo Wyatt, waitresses. Going back to the kitchen, he is surprised to see so many other former classmates from Bradley. Joyce Wooden is dieti- cian ; Lillard Kaylor, Jackie Evans, Roy Guthrie, Carl Linder, and Bruce Parton are cooks, and Wayne Hampton is the chef. As I look into my crystal ball again, I see Dennie boarding the plane heading for Washington. As he enters Washington he sees the famous soap- box campaigners Clyde Kyle and John- ie Jones, who are running as Demo- cratic candidates for the House of Rep- resentatives, and Republicans Bill Pet- tit and James Baldree, who are prospec- tive Senators. Some of their faithful supporters are Colonels Oscar Dykes and Kenneth McDowell, who are out- standing in their services in Civil War II. Later that afternoon he goes down- town to see the parade announcing the arrival of the circus in town. The pa- rade is led by the Confederate and Un- ion Bands, which are directed by Dar- rell Harmon and Fred Nipper. In the background he can hear the anthem be- ing sung by the vocalists Agnes Steven- son, Pauline Lee, and Sandra Slaughter. Following the bands are Renzy Stepp, owner of the circus; Faye Mc- Cracken, aerialist; Bobbie Jo Griffin, Lucille Snyder, and Wanda Stepp, clowns; Willie Mae Stewart, Glenda Po- teet, and Jean McCann, bareback riders, and James Cloer and Doyle Clark, cow- boys. After the parade he decides to visit some of his old friends who are prac- ticing law in Washington. He finds Vance Varnell and David Johnson in the Pentagon. As he starts back for the hotel, he meets the famous ALL AMERICAN “Blondettes” Basketball Team, who are headed for Cleveland to play the mighty “Bananettes.” Those on the “Blondette” team are Robbie Withrow, Sylvia John- son, Marlene Hoivard, Betty. Slack, Jaynie Marr, and Jerry Hunt, who are managed by Mary Jean Harle. After quite a chat, he retires be- cause the trip to Cleveland is to begin at seven the next morning. As he arrives at the airport, P. B. and Rachel Abel, owners of the Delta Air Lines who are raising little air- planes on the side, greet him. Dennis sees Zella Faye Casson, Gwinith Copeland, and Doris DeFord, who say they won’t be able to attend the reunion party since they are leaving as missionaries to Russia on the next plane. While on the plane, Dennis hears someone speaking of the great scien- tists, Billy Carson and Bobby Barnes, and chemists, Waldon Goode and Jack Whaley. As soon as Dennis arrives in Cleve- land, I see he enters a barber shop, owned and managed by Fred Critten- den. He stays overnight at the snazzy Cherokee Hotel, now owned and man- aged by the Elmore Brothers, Bill and Bob. Most everyone is at the party when Dennis arrives. He is greeted at the door by Coach Bobby Scott, who lets him in on a little of the latest news. He says that James Lovingood, Glenn Da- vis, Verlin Corbin, Roy Watkins, Ken- neth Burger, and Bill Randolph attend- ed a Fat Hog Show about a month ago in Nashville, and each won recognition with his hog. At this time Bill Bacon comes up and says he is now in a big sawmill business. Douglas Dixon, Bobby Owen- by, Edglee Crisp, and Jimmy Swafford are assisting him in his business. Rev. Aubrey Combs tells Dennis that Jimmy Riden now owns several chain grocery stores. Some of his man- agers are Wayne Moore, M. F. Creas- man, Phillip Wager, and Lonnie Harri- son. Bill Vest now owns the Vest Gro- cery and Bill McMahan is his butcher. Looking around the room, Dennis notices a little group of intellectual looking people with Martha Rogers, who is teaching American History at Bradley now that Miss Eugenia is married, the center of attention. Listening intently are Ruth Ann Dcurnell, Catherine Dunn, and Ella Faye Dailey, teachers of the kindergarten, and Maurine Bennett, Patsy Mikel, and Patsy Metzner, high school teachers. While waiting for the program to begin, which is under the direction of Sue Still, Dennis decides to find out all the latest news from Billy Jameson, who is now a professional golfer. From Billy he learns that quite a few of his class- mates are married. Those he mentions are June Greene, Jean Weaver, Sue Wat- kins, Maxine Dooley, and Jerry McDar- is. Just then Ralph Elliott comes up and reminds them that the program has be- gun. As they sit down, they notice in front of them Mary Helen Sneed, Wilma Smyth, Jo Ann Self, and Melba Wade. Charles Davidson and Bobby Hatvk win first prize doing their “Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis” act. The prize is do- nated by Louise Pierce, manager of one of the largest 5 10 cent stores. Just as refreshments are being served, Dennis notices Virginia Russell, Lamona Price, and Mavis Hall arriving at the party. It seems they had to work overtime at their department store, since the inspector is due the next day. Leaving the party, Dennis also no- tices Paul Odom and Don Ratcliff, who are doing well in their vocations as en- gineers. Tired from the trip and excitement Dennis plans to catch an early plane back to Paris the next morning. When he arrives at the airport, he sees Ruth Matthews and Frances Nott working at the ticket office, and Edith Jones work- ing at the information booth. I see Dennis is disappointed be- cause there was something lacking at the party. About this time someone taps him on the shoulder, and it is none other than Dr. David Jones, who has just arrived for the party. As David ambles off to catch the next plane out, Dennis realizes it was David who was missing at the party. Now back on the plane to Paris, Dennis is chuckling to himself as he re- calls many pleasant memories of his Bradley High School days. I, Zandora, can see that he thinks this has been a successful class reunion. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS On February 14, the juniors entered a wonderland of cupids and hearts, which carried out the Valentine theme of their class party. The main fea- ture was sets of square dancing called by Gene Weaver. Other events of the evening were folk games and enacting of famous historical events. Pictured at the left is a skit which represented George Washington crossing the Delaware. Following the more strenuous activities, contests were held among some of the students to see which one could eat the most refreshments. At the close of the party Jeannie Callaway and Bobbie Erwin left together. Their hearts evidently had been pierced by Cupid’s stray ar- rows. Prizes for the best-dressed couple were awarded to Sara Wattenbarger, who came “Red Silk Stockings and the Green Perfume,” and James Kimsey, who was dressed as “Mammy.” Other interesting looking characters were as follows: Helen Deering, as “I’ve Been Shopping Down at Dob- sons,” Jo Ann Tallent as the “Milk Bucket Boogie,” Sheila Young and Katherine Hughes as “Buttons and Bows,” Joan Tracy as “Goodnight Irene,” Betty Cate Manley as “Star- dust,” Paul Taylor as “Give Me More, More, More of Your Kisses,” and Mary Ellen Swafford was “Unde- cided.” The main event of the party was the crowning of Kermit Swiger as “The Most Eligible Bachelor of Leap Year.” We all had such a good time that we hated to leave, so we took the “Long Way Home.” Sophomores AUSTIN, R. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS President: Tommy Lee Vice-President: Warnie Dooley Secretary: Milteen Hornsby Treasurer: Jimmy O’Donald CLASS PARTY On November 9 the freshman class turned out for their class party, a gala tacky party. The first event which took place was the judging of the tackiest costume by the judges: Miss Milne, Mrs. Tiller, Mr. Clabo, and Mr. Nichols. The two winners, David Farrell and Amanda Newman, were dressed as a pirate and a model of the gay nineties, respectively. Following the judging, folk games were enjoyed. Refreshments and square dancing were two events that held fun and en- joyment for everyone. Two girls espe- cially enjoyed these events were Pa- tricia Goins and Sharon Green in their fashionable straw hats. Other fashionable ladies were Warnie Doo- ley in her toe-sack and Sally Gilliland in her longhandles over which was an oversized dress.
