No matter how hard we searched, the answer was the same, praying was the only thing we could have done. It's hard for us to understand, but as time goes on we learn to see. Things like this can't be stopped, it just has to be. Scott and Karin had found early in life the key to the golden gates. There they have a brand new life, where for us they wait. We're still riding rough waves, until we pass through the gates to the calm sailing seas. We will meet them in the land that has been untouched by man's destruction, a place we call the land of the free. By: Cynthia Beck All eyes were on the '75 BRADLEYAN during the Yearbook Signing Party held in the main lobby. Q11 Deb Win- kel and Tim Chappell were busy with several books to sign while Q35 a '75 graduate remembered quietly the year past. f4j Kris Cannon and jennifer Stubbs skimmed the pages hurriedly to find their pictures. Q21 Becky Stubbs displayed her approval of the '75 BRADLEYAN by flashing a large smile for the yearbook photographer. Yearbook Party 17 l8H H0 ECDMING- -xi L A ,MA g Homecoming Week would not have been complete without Class Competition Day. flj julie Cotsones and julie Mifflin dis- covered that a good sense of humor was needed in order to survive some of the events! 121 Bryan Blanchette wondered if he was the only one pulling for the juniors. Q35 Toby Marcotte, Michelle DuVoisin, and Becky Yeates made it to the finish line without a tumble. f4j jan Boudreau made Class Competition Day look easy. f5y Andy Helopolous doubted that his grip would last a second longer. Q63 All of those pushups in p. e. class finally proved valuable for Curt Carter and Chris Pollo. C71 The spa- ghetti eating event was a favorite with everyone except, perhaps, Todd Ondra and Toby Marcotte. The Freshman Class surprised everyone by being victorious over the upperclass- men. The victories for Homecoming 1975 were just beginning, though. v f X i Homecoming 19 H0 X 0' l ' L f if Color My World was the theme of this year-'s homecoming. Homecoming re- quired much preparation, not only for the dance, but for the parade, too. flj With all the hustle and bustle involved in float finishing, Deb Winkel and Kathy Hanold still found time to play with a friendly kitten. f3j While they played, it was work-time for Kim Peters and Randy VadeBoncouer. They listened closely to paper stuffing instructions. f6J Becky Phillips already had the float stuffing process well under control. Q21 Linda Legris took a quick breather from her duties as float builder. 20 Homecoming ECDM Vi . 3 -4 I li I s Hs' 3 5 V Will we ever have everything completed by Friday? wondered several of the work- ers. f4J Walt Dunsworth and Q51 Kim Leri- ger were only two of the people who had the tedious task of coloring the gym walls. Along with the wall decorating came the construction of the queen's throne and placement of streamers near the ceiling. Q71 Mark Edmonds soon learned that pa- tience was the most difficult part of decora- ting. Homecoming 2 l H0 ECDM N The student body elected Joni Corbett as queen to reign over Homecoming 1975. The day of the parade was sunny but a bit windy for the queen and her court. Waiting for the parade to begin were f4J Queen Joni fly and her courtg Sue Willis, Carol Forgue, Vicky Cloonen, Pam Rothe, and Tina LaRoche. 'ul H 1 :YI x 22 Homecoming What do most people think of when they hear the Word parade ? Most would think of bands, floats, girls, crowds and, of course, fun. 131 This portion of the crowd seemed to be enjoying something. Was it the parade or the fact that they got out of school early? 161 Who could not smile at the antics of the varsity football team! f2j The Freshman Class proved them- selves capable of victory a second time by taking first place in the float competition. 155 Leading the home- coming parade was the BBCHS marching band. Homecoming 23 H0 ECDM NG- 2 1 Z The homecoming dance was a perfect ending for homecoming week. 115 Joni Corbett, this year's queen, reigned over the dance. Todd and Heather Aust, getting in practice for their high school years, were crown bearers for Queen Joni. 125 Becky Yeates, freshman, was escorted by Steve Matheny. 131 Dee Dee Barnes, sophomore, was escorted by Denny Pommier. 141 janet Kotten- dorf, junior, had as her escort, Woody Umphrey. Couples like 167 Dave Allie and Kathy Hebert and 175 Larry Kinder and his date, danced to music of 153 Blue Gin. 181 Dion Clary and Liz Ahlemann decided to sit out a dance and enjoy some refreshments. 24 Homecoming L Homecoming 25 LIL ABNE Putting on a musical play was more work than anticipated by KZQ Ms. Price, this year's director. Q15 Li'l Abner was the first musical for all of the cast. They found it to be more than a script, some lines, and a stage. Long, hard hours were spent repeating line after line, scene after scene, until all was perfect. Next, scenery had to be built and tickets had to be sold. Props, also, had to be located. There seemed to be no end to the work. Despite routine ups and downs, opening night arrived. The lights dimmed and the show began. 161 Tim Hancock and Denise Calvin, who played Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae, did a superb job. 181 Minor Characters like Romeo Scragg and 131 Stupidfying Jones, played by Richard Fey and Donna Baker, added great support to the lead characters. Q71 In one major scene, Abner had to join forces with his unknown enemy, General Bullmoose and assistant, roles played by George Germaine and Marty Wertz. 151 It took people like Joe Mills as Earthquake Mc- Goon, and Q43 Mammy Yokum, portrayed by Elaine Hlavach, to save Abner from this life or death predicament. 2 6 L11 Abner 1 Li '1 Abner 27 Ass fmsufs- Q,Yf e-A A 1 . That is what was found on the faces of students who attended the assemblies. fll The Fonz . prompted by Dr. Ross, the hypnotist, gave a lecture on school spirit to the student body. 163 Dr. Ross even had the senior girls believing that he had special see-through glasses. 181 Music assemblies were a favorite with everyone as Gene Cotton, folksinger, well proved. Q41 171 Phoenix and Solar Wind pro- vided rock music for bumping at the soc hops as well as for assemblies. Q51 Pep as- semblies promoted school spirit in everyone! Q25 G Q31 Probably the best aspect of assem- blies was that students were out of class and were able to find, perhaps, some moments to turn their thoughts to things other than school work. 'Q Assemblies 29 QW 30 Fairs FAIR Fairs are always a success! The Foreign Language Fair sponsored by the BBCHS and area schools' foreign language departments certainly proved this statement true. fly Vicki Helgeson, Pam Carter, Denise Calvin, Mary Marcotte, and Laura Devine participated in just one of the many skits representing various countries. Ger- man, Spanish and French restaurants provided a continental atmosphere by sewing authentic foods of the represented countries. 131 Steve Dumey, waiter, prepares to take jay Meissen's order in the German restaurant. Travel information was available to prospective travelers and Q25 Robin Strange was happy to inform them about France. lin! Mi' yi 6 1, I ly ' ff 4 -1. In May, the Art Department displayed the results of its stu- dents' creativeness by sponsor- ing an art show. The main lob- by of the school looked more like the Louvre than the en- trance to a public school. Wall hangings, oil paint- ings, charcoal drawings, mosaics, dried flower arrange- ments, and clay sculptures were just some of the artwork on display. Students from the Art Department were present to answer questions about techni- que or methods used to create the finished product. Fairs 3 l n 32 Prom is Ur 33? T2 1 by B fl .J Preparation for the junior Class Prom began weeks in advance. The Future Nurses of Ameri- ca and The Varsity Club sponsored a style show to let everyone know what the proper at- tire for the 1976 prom would be. BBCHS ob- viously has some budding models as these pictures surely indicate. 111 Alyssa Tetrault and Brett Fraser, 121 Jeanette McCorkle and jeff Bennett, 131 Barbara Gillen and Greg Raab, 141 Linda Hil- debrand and Dave I-Ialteman, 151 Alyssa Tet- rault and Todd Ondra, 161 Mary Wertz and Kurt Hayes, 171 Chris Bussert and Steve Matheny, 181 Dawn Burnam and Bill Molter. Prom 35 GRADUI-lTl0 I ig, Q, if ,Q M-Q W W Wh Q1 G 71 The graduating class of 1976 had reached the long awaited day. Q21 Kathy Benoit and Q63 Gary Dixon got into their caps and gowns in pre- paration for the ceremony. f3J Georgia Fuller and Susan Menigoz said their last goodbyes. The night began with a procession of seniors parading to their seats in the gym. 151 Rich Funkhouser, co-valedictorian, addressed the class, as did Scott Davidson, the other co-vale- dictorian, and Wayne Kohan, salutatorian. f4J Terry Oulette waited patiently for his diploma. As the band played the recessional, the graduates left the gym and proceeded to go their ways in search of fame and fortune. 36 Graduation V H Q, Q AH Je, E syihi F V 'QL Graduation 37 ri riri rwfi ri rgr, I. I.. Qs. 4 is at Q Q4 as Daddy, tell me again what it was like back in 1976 when you were a student at BBCHS. I know you're not going to believe this, Son, but those certainly were the good ole' days. What did you do for fun back in '76, Dad? ' Well, the television played a major role in everyone's life. In fact, in most homes one could find at least two televisions--a color television for the family room and a portable, black and white one for the kitchen. You mean everyone didn't have his own television? On, no, Son! Only if a family won a million dollars in the Illinois State Lottery could they afford something as extravagant as that. Back in '76 we all thought the good ole' days were the 1950's so the favorite television show was 'Happy Days. ' As I remember, we even had a few Fonzies strolling the halls at BBCHS. What's a 'Fonz', Dad? It's too hard to explain, Son. Crime prevention was a primary concern of most Americans in 19765 therefore, de- tective shows were very popular. Thursday mornings at school were spent retelling Starsky and Hutch's chase and final capture of some villanous person. Kojak, the lollipop detective from New York City, became the unsung hero in many American homes. You mean the television networks actually allowed violence on T.V. ? Only after 8:00 p. m. when prime-time family viewing ended. During family hours, we tuned into favorites like 'Tony Orlando and Dawn' singing 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree' and 'Welcome Back Kotter', a story about well-behaved students from a small hi h school. For the late night viewer, there was 'Mgnty Python's Flying Circus' and the 'Midnight Special' which featured some of the most famous musical groups of 1976. There were the Eagles, America, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Starship, and Elton john. Those sure are weird sounding names, Dad. They didn't sound funny to us, Son. Our nostalgia for the 50's even entered into our musical tastes. Old favorites like Paul Anka and Frankie Vali made a big comeback. Neil Sedaka still believed that 'Breaking Up Is Hard to Do' and Frankie Avalon could think about nothing else but 'Venus. ' Dick Clark loved every minute of the nostalgia craze. Gee, Dick Clark must have been a kid back then. He doesn't look a day over 35 now. When you wanted some action, Dad, what did you do? Parents didn't have as much money to spend on hobbies as parents do today, so our interests were simple in :om- parison to yours. During the summer, the 'Y' or the park district usually offered tennis lessons. Tennis was the in' sport in 1976 and the courts in Bradley and Bourbonnais were always full. Being very concerned about physical fitness, many people took up bicycling. Ten-speed bicycles were a must for long distance rides. In the evening the most popular pastime was 'riding the square. ' After three hours of this, we usually stopped in at Arbie's or Hardee's for a quick coke. Then if we were hungry, we'd go to the Pizza Hut for a pizza supreme. Tell me once more, Dad how you met Mom. I met her at a soc hop sponsored after one of the basketball games at BBCHS. She was doing one of those disco dances, the bus stop. With that frizzed hairdo and white osh kosh pants, I knew she was the girl for me. I asked her out for the next night and we went to see the movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. ' Throughout the year we attended other movies like 'The Sunshine Boys', 'Grizzly', and 'Blazing Saddles. ' During 'Tommy' I asked her to go steady. One thing lead to another and here we are today. l l 'Yes, 1976, our bicentennial year, was quite a year. Ronald Reagan, jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, and George Wallace, all presidential hopefuls, campaigned vigorously. Each promised a new and better era if elected. 1976 is now one of those 'eras past', one that will be remembered with smiles, laughter, and tears. The big purses made of straw seem to set off the outfits of today, too. They're not drab and dull. You might say everything's going natural and loose. fKim Petersj I like western styled clothes. fBruce Applegatej Everything goes. You can wear flowers and stripes and still be in fashion. You have such a variety of clothes. You can mix and match everything. CKim Lerigerj I like the fashions of 1976 because you can wear just about what you want. You can wear any length of skirts. You can wear different types of styles and you usually don't stick out. Also, the colors and styles are bright and good looking. CLinda Dockmeyerj I think the fashions of today show that the youth of today can dress in their own way and still look presentable. I think the great variety of fashion also shows the amount of freedom today's youth have. fDwayne Menserj I like the longer skirt length. I like how roomy clothes are. The styles seem to be simple to get into and they look simple. fGina Caliy You mean there are girls at school who wear skirts! Point one out. DOUG BARCLAY, Physical Education: Co-ed P.E. is fine for certain activities. I believe it should be mandatory for Freshmen, and be an elective for upper- classmen. Students can derive a lot of meaningful experiences if the activities are carefully selected. 4. HAROLD BENNETT, Physical Education. 5. MARY BRANCH, Guidance: To me, a nice evening is being able to stay home and not have anything thatl MUST get done before the evening is over. I would do something useful around my home, such as read, knit, sew, clean, or cook, and I would enjoy it as long as I knew I cIidn't have to have it all finished in a couple of hours. 4. AGNES BOULGER, Home Economics: Perhaps it is an ideag but I believe it is attainable. I wish the desire for men- tal growth could become the top goal of students. The satisfaction gained from this success would urge them On--n0t only in areas of formal learning--but also into a greater variety of extra-curricular activities which are available in a school of our size. I believe some students are unaware of the fun they could be having, were they fully involved in serious learning during the high school years. 5. Dsiomzs BOUDREAU, secretary. 6. Team members must also be team players first and not be selfish and they must follow the coaches instructions. If a young man possesses all of these characteristics and the team has not been a winner, he still has lost nothing , because he had in the process made himself a better man and will one day be a winner within himself. 4. TRESSIE I-HLES, Business: Traveling to unknown places is what I really enjoy. It would be great to catch a plane to Switzerland right now. 7. MELVIN LILLICH, Special Education: Having a wonderful wife who is also a great mother makes me very happy. 3. CAROL KUIPERS, Home Economics: Bachelor Living is the hardest class to teach because the guys don't realize that learning to cook, sew, etc. may be use- ful someday. They don't take the class seriously. 4. BRENDA KIRTS, Physical Education: lf the games were held later in the evening, more working parents could attend Of course, more publicity is always help- ful. Improved se ating conditions in the girls' gym could help to improve the visibility of the spectators. Greater interest on the part of the student body for all sports programs would provide a better sports-mindedness and create additional interest for the girls' program. 5. LINDA LAMBERT, Special Education: My sports and hobby interests are very diverse, ranging from golf to 'attempted' belly-dancing. 6. VERN KRUGER, Driver Education. 7. JEANETTE MEATTE, Math: Probably my worst experience at BBCHS was in '73 when I was driving the sophomore class float that burned. Luckily, no one was hurt, but it was tragic because we did not re- ceive recognition for one of the best floats ever constructed for a BBCHS Homecoming. 6. JAN MAY, Social Studies: I have always believed that as a teacher I should be concerned with the quality of a s1.udent's mind and attitudes rather than to external aspects of dress or manner, as long as a student's dress is safe and does not interrupt the learning process by dis- uacting the student himself, or others in the class. 7. Although every English course aids in this learning, the basic needs are vocabulary, sentence structure, speech, and organization of ideas. 2. GERALD NELSON, Guidance: We do every- thing we can to make students aware of the advantages of obtaining a high school education. We will encourage a student to stay in school as long as possible. If a student leaves school we will still work with that student on finishing their education through night school or the G.E.D. program. 3. GERALD O'FLAI-IERTY, Science: One of my favorite spare time activities is to do TARGET shooting with target pistols. I also manufacture my own ammunition to do my target shooting. I do not hunt, just shoot for scores on paper targets in the manner of competition shooters. 4. COLLEEN PAGNANI, English: Contrary to the belief of several of my students, I do like the kids here. They'xe usually fl repeat, USUALLYJ cooperative, and the same goes for the faculty. The experienced are eager to help a new one. 5. ANITA OWEN, English: I especially enjoy teaching literature. Naturally it becomes even more satisfying when students enjoy reading and discussing what they've read. 6. DARLA MOLDENHAUER, Physical Education I feel the successes of our girls' teams has made the school and the community more aware of the progress of our girls' sports program. We have had some excellent athe- Ietes at BBCI-IS and it's time they gained public recognition for their accomplish- ments! 7. KRAIG OSBERG, Social Studies: One of the funniest things that has happen- ed to me during the last year took place at summer school. I enrolled in a course I thought would be a cultural geography study of the far East. Upon entering the classroom the first day, I found every- one taking off their shoes and socks and axuming the lotus position. I had registered for a class in Yoga. 129 Staff 130 Staff 1. LUCILLE PROVOST, Reading Consultant: A student who is interested in a career in education, should research the job market thoroughly before choosing a major field. It is disheartening to invest four or five years of your life in preparation for a career in a field that is overcrowded. 3. KATHY PECHAUER, Business: Students need to learn a sense of responsibility. After high school, most go on to some form of employment. They need to learn a sellable skill that they are happy with and the self-pride to do their best. Too large a percentage of our students do not take pride in what they do--only enough to get by. Students need to challenge themselves more as well as we, as teachers, need to challenge them more. 4. WILLIAM PORTER, Science: The most funny experience I have ever had here at BBCHS was this year's 7th hour Biology I class. 5. DAVID PETERS, Industrial Arts: 'Woodworking is not one of the easiest classes to take, but is probably one of the most interesting because of the worthwhile product that comes from it. 6. ROBIN PHILLIPS, Art: Like all subjects, if you are interested in it and like it, you will enjoy and excell. I try to create enthusiasm from the start. During the weeks before he finally took off for good, we found him climbing up legs of desks, slithering down between the aisles, and wrapped around the legs of chairs. If nothing else, it kept everyone awake. 4. STEVE SCI-IACT, Math: As a new teacher I felt very welcomed to BBCI-IS. The administlation as well as fellow teachers helped with any problems I encountered. Oddly enough, some students came to my rescue also. 5. This is because in the rapid- ly changing world of today no one knows what the future holds. The students we teach today will become mature function- ing citizens in the year 2000 roughly, no one knows what being taught today will be of any value to them, with the exception of rational thinking. 5. When Cuban troops are in Angola and many of our Students fail to understand the concept of the 4th of july, I believe these fears to be justified. 4. Ihope you enjoy the BRADLEYAN 76 and find it of help in the years to come, when you decide to look back and remember your high school friends and experiences. Iwould like to sincerely thank Blankenburg Photographers for all of the help they have given us with our photography. The efforts of Mr. jim johnson, our yearbook representative, have also been deeply appreciated. Our new yearbook ad- visor, Miss Cynthia Hakes must be thanked and congratulated, for your first year at a new school is your toughest. And finally, I must thank the BRADLEYAN 76 staff and all of the others, too innumerable to mention, who have helped through- out the year. I would personally like to thank Miss Chinn fnow Mrs. Amos of Beaver Dam Wisconsinj for the three years of journalism experience she has given me. I would also like to congratulate her on the two awards which the BRADLEYAN 75 staff received. Don't worry Miss Chinn, you'll never be forgotten. Editor-in-chief George Ray P. S. Please excuse some of the overindulgence in the Bicentennial theme, but as it comes once in 200 years we somehow felt it proper. fu, Q fr A A, - M., , ,,,,,.-H Jim-IM ., ,H ,U .., at J- ,,, , .A A -, -V.
