S. A. SMITH Principal Bradley- Bourhonnais Community High School S. A. SMITH, Principal E North Street and Center Avenue BRADLEY, ILLINOIS To the Students: You are privileged to be a citizen of a great country, in one of its greatest periods of development. America is now taking its place as one of the leading powers, if not the leading power in world affairs. America is great because of the manner in which it was organized as a democracy, because of its natural resources, because of its tradition, because each citizen has been recognized to have equal rights and privileges with all others, because each citizen could see the value of improving himself and his community, and also because many persons have been jealous of these privileges and have learned to assume their obligations as citizens. America has had to learn that along with rights and privileges to be enjoyed, obligations have had to be assumed and met.. Your high school is one of the agencies that assists'you to be prepared to better take your place in such a society. Good citizenship in your school is the best prepara- tion to help you meet the challenge of the future. It is fortunate that we always have Young America with us. That is what perpetu- ates our vigor and growth. Each generation has grown to maturity and has met the problems of their day, as well or better than the preceding ones. We have the utmost faith that your generation will carry on the tradition of America in its position of world leadership. Sincerely, S. A. L I In WITNESS WHEREOF, we have herewith affixed our seal this twenty-ninth da of May, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-three. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 19531- HAPPY OVER OUR BEQUESTS! Praphccy After 10 years of extensive travel during which time I saw some fascinating places, I was returning to Bradley for a short stay. Driving down highway 54-, I discovered a familiar looking little woman hanging out washing. It couldn't be-but, yes-it was Terry Afri- cano, now a little housewife taking care of her husband Al and Al Jr. We chatted for a while and she mentioned Leon Andreina, who is making out very well in the fur trading business up north. As I left Terry, I decided to go to some exclusive place for lunch, but being rather tired, I thought a drive inn seemed best. Coasting in my Cadillac down East Avenue I heard someone shout my name, I turned and there was Lois Benoche, car-hopping at Queens. Butch Arseneau was in the car next to mine lunch- ing too. He introduced me to his wife-and nine children. She was the former Madonna Heinze! Since it was early in the afternoon, I thought a stroll around town would be refreshing. As I was coming out of Sears and Hasemeyer Company, now under the management of an old friend, I noticed a moving van stuck on the Schuyler Avenue hill. I knew l'd seen the driver somewhere. Well of course it was Bobbie Boy Pippin. Seems that he's moving Ozzie and Jackie Peters' new furniture into their new home. He also conveyed the choicy bit of news that Maurice Shu- maker now owns his own camera shop. Maurice is really in the money! He even has several employees. Larry Troutman and Gerald Kray are developing pictures for him. Arlene Frechette is working as receptionist and errand girl. I've always had a feeling that Arlene and Maurice would work well together. Something was certain to develop in that Photographic Studio! As I was window shopping, I saw Mary Josephine Book in Stark's Hat Shop. The old girl has long black hair now and she has her own beauty shop. She told me that Norma Rantz and Joyce Osenga were in the other day with their two little girls. Mary said that Norma and Jim Walters, Joyce and Ted Powell had a double wedding three years ago. She just had loads to tell me! It seems that Nancy Simms, Lou Januski, and Bev Erickson are all happily married. Toady Larsen and Nyla Nelson have been en- gaged for 10 years and any day now she expects him to pop the question. Bill Sikes and Bill Travis have made a career of the Navy. They have a leave coming up next month, though, and there are rumors that Freddie Johnson is rounding up a big party for the boys. Seems that that Navy career is all that those boys are interested in these days. According to Mary, Fred is aging rapidly. Gerald Kray and Bill Floyd have a partnership in a big riding stable. It seems that someone has been stealing horses. I was sorry to hear that Merlin Demaray is a suspect. He always did such daring things in school. At the stable there is also a huge restaurant and a dancing pavilion. Mimi and JoJo Drummond have a cute little number they do as part of the act. It's some sort of ballet, I guess. JoJo always was light on his feet. There certainly were a lot of old acquaintances out there. It must have taken away all of Rickett's busi- ness. A few of the couples were Phyllis Pierson and Ken Calabria. After 10 years, they're still in love! What really surprised me though was big, muscular Fred Krause, still single and living with mother. He always was such a 'fCasanova in school. Proplzery What a surprise! Loisjane Simonich and Lu Lu Safiran just strolled in. By the looks of these girls, life in Bradley has really been an adventure during the past 10 years. They look ravishing! Social leaders of the city-people are saying. We thought a drive would be nice, so we left, and now found ourselves heading toward Meadowview. As long as we were here, we thought that we might as well stop at Carol Chapmans. Her son, Johnnie Jr., is having his fifth birthday. Carol's so worried, she had just discovered three gray hairs. I didn't realize so many of my classmates would be married. Bob Gibson and some little gal seemed deep in conversation. Why, it's Barb McGruder! She cer- tainly has changed. Barb tells me Bob owns a cigarette factory now. That's swell! He once rolled his own, in Geography Class, back in '53. Bob told me that Bob Pasel is making millions from his Truck Stop. Bob went to Hawaii on his vacation and got a little involved when fe set fire to some girl's grass skirt. Everyone seems to be getting along fine. There are a few unhappy ones, though. Without much thought of tls 5 future years back in '53, Pat Gulczynski and Pat Rittmanic ran away and joined the Waves for 15 years. Only five years more and they'll be out. Their two old friends Rene Martell and Lyn Renfro started school at the University of Illinois the fall of '53. Lyn has been out for about six years now. Rene should be out soon. A handsome, talented Bradley boy by the name of Dick Pettit is now a professional basketball player. He's center for the Minneapolis Lakers. That boy will go far. Don Bilyeau is a traveling salesman selling nylon hose. Good old Don hasn't changed a bit! .loAnn Robbins is a tap dancer in one of the nation's biggest carnivals. Earl Witthoft is in movies doing emotional roles. Thanks to Miss Stelter's training, Earl is doing very well. Glen Martin is getting fabulously rich in the Motel business and is planning a new string of motels for construction in Labrador soon. Don Huggans and his Music Makers are playing at the Chez Paree. Darlene Palmer and Pat Martin, his vocalists are terrific, and have broken all past records for long engagements. Poor old Rogie Dennison! I just can't believe that dignified boy is actually mopping floors in the Court House. Poor fellow. Seems he wanted to get down to the bottom of politics. I'm glad to hear that Larry Kirchiner and Phil Eby are distinguished lawyers. Our old schoolmate Hooker seems to be in need of one. That shy mouse, after 10 years, has finally gotten up enough nerve to break a window at Bradley High School. Oh well, everything can't go smoothly. But the person that really surprised me was Paul Martin. He's now the principal of Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School. Good old Paul is particularly rough with students who tap their feet on the floor in Study Halls. So after 10 years, I found that my old classmates have drifted apart, and I hope they've all found happi- ness in whatever they are doing, but I also hope- they'll never forget all the fun they had as kids together in dear old BBCHS. miar Awards PAT GULCZYNSKI D.A.R. Yes, it was the big day. The Student Council election was being held. Some of the features were parades, campaigns, speeches and platform banners posted throughout the school. The vote was taken and on Monday the results were posted. Elected were: president, Jack Beaupreg vice president, Ken Calabria, secretary, Carol Chapmang treasurer, Robert Davis. This was the beginning of a successful student council. Representatives were elected from homerooms and the council got right down to business. With the help of faculty advisors, Miss Fiene and Mr. Anderson, it tackled such major problems as Homecoming dance and parade. In December it sponsored a Clean Your Locker Week. Another new project of the council was the formation of a new intramural program. It also restored the right to vote for cheer- leaders to the students. The council feels that it has had a very successful year. Sponsors--MISS ELIZABETH FIENE and MR. Pat Yxince, and Ph-g CHEE Bradley Hoilermakers Bradley's young and inexperienced Boilermakers traveled to Pontiac for their first football game. The Indians had a good football team but the Bradley team showed them the kind of fight that was to be characteristic of them all season. The next team that the Boilermakers met was the St. Anne Cardinals. We defeated them on Ozzie Peters' touchdown and Dick Pettit's extra point 7-6. The Lockport Porters handed Bradley its first defeat 27-20. The Boilermakers got back on the winning trail by defeating Central 13-0. Again Ozzie,' scored both touchdowns. Who's next, please? asked the Boilermakers, and they grabbed the Gilman Owls and sent them home much wiser. The 14-7 victory was the perfect climax for the Homecoming. After that the team traveled to Momence and scalped the Redskins 27-13. Alas, after three victories, the Boilermakers were defeated by Crete 32-0. Crete went on to win the K.V.C. For the last game of the season, Bradley played St. Pats, losing 33-6. Although the team won no great honors, the players and Coach Butkovich spent many long hours of practice, and we should all give them a lot of credit. X . Next came the Central Comets, and the young Boilermakers defeated them 20-6. Then they tangled with East Junior High School, and the Bradleyans came out on top 12-0. Then came the Momence team, defeated by the Boilermakers 32-0. Next came Crete's team, undefeated until we won 6-O. The last game, St. Pats defeated Bradley 12-0. A lot of credit must be given to Coach Harry Skalsky, who took inexperienced boys and made a good team. Moving back into K.V.C. competition, we defeated Momence, St. Anne, and St. Patrick's. We dropped a very close game to Thornton of Harvey. Then Kankakee came to Braclley's gym for the traditional game. We were defeated by the Kays. Then for our final home game before the Christmas Tourney, we defeated Crete. In our first game of the tourney, we played a big Joliet team and lost in the last few minutes. Then we played Bloomington in the consolation bracket and we lost again. Getting underway again, we beat Crete and Gilman. Entering the K.V.G. Tourney, we lost to Peotone by one point. Then we hit a streak of bad luck and lost to Central, Bloom, and St. Anne. We traveled to Peopone and avenged the former defeat. We dropped one to St. Patricks, beat Momence, and lost to Central. Then we won two of the last three games, defeating Gilman, losing to Blue Island, and winding up our regular season by defeating Watseka. We had a season's record of eleven wins and twelve losses.
