Then I saw in my dream, that when they were got out of the wilderness, they presently saw a town before them and the name of that town is Bradley. And at that town there is a fair kept called Higher Learning. It is kept so that those who wish to better themselves may be able to do so. And many things can be purchased here, such as reading, writing, arithmetic, and good citizenship. - , This fair is no new erected business, but a thing of ancient standing. And moreover, at this iair, can be seen scholars, cheats, athletes, playboys, and girls. Now at this fair there are several booths, Algebra, English, Biology, Chemistry, History, and so for.h, at which 101' a very small amount, one can acquire as much as he wishes. , Now these Pilgrims chose to be represented at the fair by General Decker, Captain Hayes, Master Sergeant Kohan, and Sergeant McClain. The head of the fair at that time was Principal Honn, who ruled over it with a guiding hand, and under him was his corps of highest rank, teachers. But it was the second highest and mighiiest at the fair, the Seniors, who took the task of showing the new members their way around, and also initiated them into their higher society. Now some of the dreadful tortures these Pilgrims had to undergo, to enter 'into this higher society were the snake dance, which was a horrid dance around a baking fire. The Pilgrim boys were also put through many disastrous ordeals in which some of them lost their personal belongings, and then all the Pilgrims were put through many embarrassing experiences, such as wearing tueir clornes inside uot and lipstick painted over their faces. Being of courageous nature, these Pilgrims ventured back to the fair of the next year. After arriving, they pursued the old friends and comrades of the former fair. This done, they proceeded to the immediate business at hand by choosing their representatives for the fair, these being General Decker, Captain Hayes, Master Sergeant Anderson, and Sergeant Leszczewicz. Now being in a position to rot only participate in business at the fair but also to conduct it, the Pilgrims decided that they should establish themselves as a power. They went about this in many ways. Now the first way they did this was by holding a dance called the Sophomore Dance, which was a success. The second way that 'the Pilgrims estab- lished themselves as powers was through the Pilgrim boys. These boys showed their prowess in athletics and this proved that they could hold their own against the best of them. The Pilgrim girls also made a fine showingin Home Economics by proving that they were fine cooks and homemakers, as well as scholars. Now I saw in my dream, that they went on to the fair of the next year. This year the Pilgrims were faced with many tasks, for they had to acquire funds for the gala event of the fair. ,'Now this event was the entertaining of the higher society of the fair, who were going to attend the fair for only one more year. Being a great undertaking, for which they were responsible, the Pilgrims chose their leaders with care. Those chosen were General Hoffman, Captain Hayes, Master Sergeant Sears, and Sergeant Kohan. When this was accomplished, the officers went about the task of organizing committees to acquire funds for this gala affair. Now the Pilgrim lads played in most of the athletic events, so the task of acquiring these funds lay in the hands of the Pilgrim girls. These girls, being of stout heart, worked hard and long in raising the funds nf'ces arv. t Now with the fine leadership of Orville Hoffman, the gala-affair became a reality, and it was carried on in royal style, the Pilgrims electing as their king' and queen Edward Hayes and Dolores Bisping. Thus, llle PilgI'1mS halfe made :i success of their most important year at the fair. Now, having attended the fair of higher learning for three years, and having but one more year to attend before receiving their scroll, designating them as ones who had attended, they whole- heartedly decided to return for the next, and their final, session at the fair. Now, I saw in my dream, that the Pilgrims arrived at the fair in fine spirit- and used the power vested in them in a way benefiting the school. The Pilgrims had become seniors at the fair and this made them the most powerful group of all there. But the Pilgrims did not use this power unwisely, but used it diligently and resourcefully for the betterment of the fair. Those chosen by the Pilgrims to lead them through this final year of their attendance at the fair were General Hayes, Captain Leszczewicz, Master Sergeant Gereaux, and Sergeant Wertz. The Pilgrim boys were exceptionally skillful in two types of contests thatifound great merit in the eyes of the persons at the fair: the first, running with an oblate spheroid against eleven adversaries, the second, throwing a large ball ll1T011gl1 a small net suspended from a metal hoop. In the first type of contest, the Bradley fair team was unvanquishedg in the second, the group-. covered itself wlth great lgongr by winning a game in the Great Carnival held some eighty miles south of ra ey, Now these Pilgrims had made good use of their visits to the fair and were better able to cope with the tasks ahead of them. BRADLEY-BOURBONNAIS COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL fn Ji 0043 USIC HIGHLIGHT ' For a number ofyears, it has been evident that, each year, music was becoming increasingly important in the activities of Bradley High School. Each year new activities have been entered, new honors have been won, and new fields havenbeen exploredg and during the 1949-5,0 school year an' entirely new peak inwmusical accomplishment was reached. This year, when we also moved into our new school building, we had our first full-time music director, and, in addition to the choral groups already organized, the Bradley High School band grew from seven members at the beginning of school to fortyffive members by the end of the year. The band made periodic public appearances at the football games, and opened most of them with the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. Then, during our annual Homecoming Game, we went all out while the band and the Girls' Physical Education Department provided a variety of entertainment for the Homecoming fans. Another new and different event was the 1949 'Christmas pro- gram. Instead of the customary Christmas choral concert, the band' and the choruses, together with the Speech Department, pre- sented The Christmas Story, a pageant in pantomime and song. Some interesting and unusual effects were achieved. All members of the Music Department participated in theqannual Kankakee Valley Music Festival, which was held at the Momence High School. The Regional Music Contest, in which the Girls' Chorus was entered, was held at -Champaign, on' March 25. BRADLEY-BOURBONNAIS COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL . BRADLEY-BOURBONNAIS COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL 999 fwfhm I DI TRICT PEECH CONTEST This year's District Speech Contest was held at the Milford High School on February 25, 1950. Six of the speech events were entered by students of Bradley High School. By winning a total of 26 points, Bradley was rated first over all the schools entered in the contest. Our school was represented by Marilyn Kerr, whose serious read- ing, In Rebecca's Room, won first place. Nancy Jo Helmer, who, with the comedy reading Green Pastures, gained a second place rating, Tom Hale, who got second place with an oratorical decla- mation, Common Sense, and first place with his original oration, Super Bomb-Salvation or Destruction. Nancy Helmer also re- ceived a second place rating in verse speaking. All participants who gain a first-or second-place rating in the District Contest are eligible to compete in the Sectional meet at Pontiac on March 11. In order to be represented at the State finals in May, a first or second place must be secured at the Sectional Contest. Schools which were represented at the District Speech Contest at Milford were Bradley, Chebanse, Clifton, Gibson City, Leda, Onarga, Paxton, St. Anne, and Sheldon. Nothing else in the world can produce such a warmth of fellowship and good humor as meeting again with those friends of last year, ten years ago, or even longer. There is always the ever-present nostalgia to be reconciled with a fast-changing and a ,fast-moving world. We all like homecomings. Queen Autumn was still on her throne-and was a joy to behold-when, on November 28, the second Annual Homecoming Dance of Bradley High School came to reality. Boys and girls had been busy for several days decorating the gym for the occasion. Everyone-faculty, students, and alumni--looked forward to that special night of all special nights. No one was disappointed in the festivities, every- one went away smiling and happy. Laughing lads and lovely lassies chatted and joked with old acquaintances and then swirled away to the very danceable strains of Earl Betourne's orchestra. Memories of years past and days present were yet piling one upon the other when the hour arrived for some lucky girl to become Homecoming Queen. As the orchestra played softly, the young ladies and young men, fully dressed for such an event, began the processional march to the throne. Dolores Bisping, Jacqueline Gustin, Violet Keagle, Elaine Pilcher, and Carolyn Renfro, each accompanied by a member of this year7s football team, glided gracefully across the floor to their chosen spots. Then, strikingly beautiful in a snow white gown, came Joyce Anderson, our Homecoming Queen of 1949. One could almost see her shiver with delight as the crown was placed upon her head by Jacqueline Gustin, Homecoming Queen of 1948. A thrill of a lifetime was packed into that one moment. Certainly she must have felt the good wishes of everyone present, because admiring glances and voiced congratulations were quick to come to the lovely queen. The dancing which followed may have been an anti-climax, but that kept no one from enjoying himself. The big event of the evening was past, but fun and frolic continued, and ripples of laughters followed in the wake of the swirling couples. There comes a time, however, when delights must be laid aside. As the hour of midnight, and parting, approached, one could hear drawn-out and belated fare- wells, but always with the parting reminder, Let's all come back next year. BRADLEY-BOURBONNAIS COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL ff fy .A.A.. This year, as in years past, the Girls' Athletic Association has been a very active group. Through the efforts of the sponsor and officers our many hours of leisure have been happy and entertaining hours. Our school-year activities began withla hike and a weiner roast-always a good way to begin' the year-to Bird's Parkl As autumn and old Jack Frost soon made the woods an inviting place to spend a few short hours, we ventured forth on another hike and weiner roast to the Bourbonnais Cave-s. - Activities such as these were followed by the annual Play Day at Bloom. On this particular day, girls from the surrounding schools come together for one day tc: participate in all types of sporting events. Several of the girls attended and enjoyed this Play Day. As winter began to creep up on us, the girls turned to indoor sports. Volley- ball was ihe first indoor sport of the season, and several teams were chosen to play in intermurals. At the end of the season, a volleyball tournament was held to determine which team was outstanding. 'Bow1ing, another great American sport, attracted the attention of the girls. Teams were organized, and bowling was done on Sunday afternoons. These after- noon games continued until a telegraphic bowling contest was started. Then, ten girls began bowling in this contest and the five highest scores were sent to the state. Dolores Bisping had the highest individual score as well as the second highest series, and Shrley Petrcwski was runner-up with the second highest score and the highest series. Many of the girls like swimming, and were able to use the YMCA pool several nights. A great deal of fun, as well as some good exercise, made these nights enjoyable. At Christmas time, the G. A. A. and the F. H. A. combined their efforts and held a joint party. First the girls went caroling, then returned to the school for hot spiced punch and a gift exchange. All these activities are only a few of the things that ambitious young American girls everywhere are doing. These things help to strengthen the girls physically, mentally, and morally. Young America is forever moving ahead for bigger and better things, in all respects, and the G. A. A. is doing a grand job to help high school girls uphold and enforce this tradition. For a job well done we wish to thank our officers, Shirley Strickler, Dolores Bisping, and Marilyn McFarland, and our especial thanks and gratitude go to our sponsor, Miss Fiene. A I A A FOOTB LL With the football equipment packed and stored for another season, the Bradley gridders and 'Coach Ralph Wagner can look back 'QVBI' their 1949 season with justifiable pride. Not only did the team complete an undefeated season and take their second consecutive Kankakee Valley Championship, but, as they coasted to nine straight victories, the mighty Boilermakers led all state teams in scoring by rolling up an amazing total of 308 points to their opponents' 27. The 308 points scored is also a record for points scored by a Bradley team in one season. The bruising Boilermakers -opened the season by rolling over Crete to the tune of 26-0 in their only day game of the campaign. The following week the Boilermakers pleased a home crowd by running roughshod over St. Anne, 38-6, This year's Boilermakers established a precedent when they became the first Bradley team ever to defeat Lockport. The K, V. C. champs overcame several early penlaties to down the Porters 26-7. Most of the first string relaxed the following week during a 53-7 routiof Wilmington. An underdog Reddick team gave our regularsaa rugged fight in our 27-0 victory over the Bulldogs. The sweetest victory of the year was the 19-7 win over a powerful Rantoul eleven. From this point on, the Boilermakers, finishing their season at home, coasted to three successive victories. The Redskins of Momence were scalped 28-0, a good Dwight eleven was downed 61-0, and Str Pats was defeated 33-0. 7 A banquet was held after the season ended and Coach Wagner presented major letter awards. Those who received their final football letters at Bradley High are: Ed Hayes, John Leszczewicz, Ralph Marcotte, Marvin Gereaux, John Wilkins, Ralph Palmer, Orville Hoffman, Charles Pierson, Joe Wertz, Jack Thaden, and Gerald Decker. Not only do the boiling Boilermakers roll to an undefeated football season, but they then proceed to have the most successful basketball season in the history of Bradley High School. A few of these honors won by these hardwood, roundball artists, were: champions of the K. V. C. tourney, Regional champs, and Sectional champs. During the regular season the boys cap- tured a third place trophy in the Paris Holiday Tournament, the toughest of them all. The perfect finale came with the Boilermakers finishing the season as quarter- finalists inthe State Finals at Champaign-the dream of every high school player. Because of our small enrollment and by virtue of their being victors over larger schools as Kankakee, Calumet City, Blue Island, Bloom, Joliet Catholic, Peoria Woodruff, Danville, Kewanee, West Aurora and Johnston City, the Boiler- makers were known as the Giant Killers in basketball circles throughout the state. In addition to winning a lot of games, the Jepsenmen gave the people of Bradley a team to be proud of. Everywhere that the team played. their good sportsmanship, manners and conduct, both on and off the court, gained them many friends. This was especially true in both the Paris Holiday Tournament and the State Tourna- ment where they were the underdogs and the fans' favorites. Someone tagged them the Darlings of the State Tournament. In the Paris Holiday Tournament, the Boilermakers extended their winning streak to ten straight victories by smashing Peoria Woodruff and upsetting Danville. Then a red-hot Paris team gave a tiring Bradley five a licking that was hard to forget and taught them a lesson. They did add a third place trophy to their collection. The let-down suffered in the Paris game was 'noticeable throughout the next few games and the complete let-down came when the St. Anne Cardinals dumped the Red and Whi e out of 'he runnino- for the conference title. After that, however, the Boilermakers began to climb and they reached their peak during tournament ime. The Bradleyans continued their winning streak until the Little Giants of Southern Illinois, Teutopolis, traveled to Bradley and became impolite guests by dumping us 51 to 45. From this point on, a never-say-die attitude and an unfaltering spirit carried the fighting Boilermakers right into the State Tournament. In both the Regional and the Sectional, these basketeers showed a spirit that made them a great team instead of just another good Bradley team. After winning their own Regional, the Boilermakers then went to work on the Sectional, which, through the grace of John L. Lewis, was held in Bradley. With Bloom as their first, opponent and with only two minutes remaining in the game, six straight free throws for the Red and Whiie 'permitted the boys to emerge victorious, 56-50. And, against West Aurora, with defeat staring them in the. face, the Boilermakers scored six points in the last 45 seconds against the best ball-handling club in the State, and became the second team in Bradley's history to go to the State finals at Champaign. By scoring twelve points in the last two minutes to trounce a good Johnston City team, coach Joe Jepsen and his boys became the first team from Kankakee County to reach the quarter-finals in the State Tournament. Here the trail ended! The string had run out! Danville, the team that went on to capture second place, pulled a famed Bradley finish to knock the smallest team in the tournament out of running. Seniors who ended their high school career on the hardwood at Huff Gymnasium were Ed Hayes, Marvin Gereaux, Jack Thaden, Gerald Decker and Joe Wertz fwho also made the all-tourney second teamj. The fine group of underclassmen who have a wonderful opportunity to make a return trip to State finals next year are Dick Burkhalter, Ralph Boggs, Dee Sandc, Leon Marlaire, and Ronald Dusenbury. The team was managed by Francis Pechauer.
