This class was taught by Rebecca Merrit- son. Since then Helen Stienhauser, Savea Torrelius, Helen Cole and Carrie Ryan have taught Home Economics. Jane A. Honey is the present instructor. When Miss Ryan began teaching in 1931, the department received its first coat of black and green paint. The girls painted the cupboards while the jan- itors painted the walls. The girls made and hung new curtains. New equip- ment was added each year to take care of the enrollment. New portable ovens were bought in 1930-32. The dinner set of dishes was added in 1935-36. During the years from 1929-36, the only courses offered were foods and clothing, and with very few exceptions these courses were open to Sophomores only. In 1936-37 an advanced course was given to the Junior and Senior girls. This was Home lanagement. In the first semester of the Home Economics Class, foods are taught. The girls learn the principals of meal planning and preparation. They study suit- able foods for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and in addition are taught how to serve these meals. In clothing, which is taken up the last semester, the girls are taught how to sew. Besides this they study the selection of materials and color and the selection of becoming and appropriate clothing. That ls, each girl is to make a stud of herself to discover what color and lines will do the most or her. This year the Ho e Economics girls made and sold scarfs in the school colors. They were red felt with white 'B's' on them. They made a big hit with the students as ninety-six of the were sold. Part of the proceeds was used to buy a pinking machine for the class. The rest was put in the treas- ure of the Home Economics Club. 'ith a great deal of interest and enthusiasm a Home Economics Club was organized this year. Our aim ls to keep this club a live, growing and worth- while organization. le started with fourteen charter nmbers and the follow- ing group of offrsrsz President--Rose Smietanski, Vice-Presidant--Betty Jane Kassman, Secretary--Frances Burkhalter, Treasurer--Gladys Hacker. 25
