Medal Contest. N. F. l. This year's Kenosha High School debate and forensic team made their greatest showing since the 1947-48 season. The debate topic was Re- solved: that the American people should reject the welfare state. The team, inspired by three veterans, Donovan Cummings, Emily Smith, and John Schmidt, and one newcomer, Mary Rode, spoke their way into numerous tournament honors. They made exceptional showings at the Port Washington Invitational Meet, receiving first place, at West Bend District Meet, winning five debates and losing one, and at the Madison Sec- tional Finals, tying for third place. They also at- tended a Tri-State Meet at Hammond, Indiana, taking second place team honors. The iunior var- sity consisted of Clay Wilmington, Marvin Martin, Robert Costen, and Richard Guttormsen. The forensic team participated in a series of state meets and qualified twelve contestants for the state forensic finals at the University of Wis- consin. Of this number, eight received A rat- ings, and four B ratings. The team attended the NFL State Meet at Marquette University High School and took the highest team honors. Four members qualified for the NFL national tourna- ment at George Pepperdine College, Los Ange- les, California, June 25-29. They are Robert Bird, Donovan Cummings, Jane Titley, and Emily Smith. They will represent the State of Wisconsin in ora- torical, dramatic, and humourous declamation, and extemporaneous speaking, respectively. To Mr. Davies, our debate and forensic coach, goes Row T: Marilyn Juhnke, Marvin Mart- in, Jone Titley. Row 2: Muriel Lintz, Mr. Davies. Row 3: Emily Smith, Donovan Cum- mings. Row 4: Doreen Burklund, Mary Rode, Robert Tenuta, Clay Willmington. Row 5: John Schmidt, Robert Costen Dick. Guttormsen, Robert Bird. much credit for again having Kenosha High School represented in the national tournament. Marvin Martin, a sophomore, competed in the l Speak for Democracy contest sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He won the state award of a S100 bond and represented Wisconsin in the national contest, qualifying as one of the thirteen finalists. Members of the debate and forensic squads made many appearances before the various fra- ternal and educational organizations in our lo- cality, thus proving themselves to be of service to the whole community. Members of the forensic team were as follows: Doreen Burklund, Donovan Cummings, Marilyn Juhnke - dramatic declamation. Jane Titley, Esther Klees, Audrey Akvick - humourous declamation. Emily Smith, Muriel Lintz, Mary Rode, Donovan Cummings, John Schmidt, Robert Costen - ex- temporaneous speaking. Robert Bird, Marvin Martin - oratorical dec- lamation. Scoring in every quarter the Red Devils showed the makings of a powerful grid machine. Individual stars were numerous as Coach Jaskwhich flooded the lineup with reserves. Mario Bonofiglio led with two touchdowns and three conversions. The latter touchdown was a 85 yard kickoff return behind a wave of blockers. Ron Rudy was top ground gainer for the Kenoshansp he averaged 25 yards in four attempts for two touchdowns. Hard charg- ing Alan Ameche tore the Cardinal line apart in scoring two six-pointers. A 20 yard pass from Bistrick to Rudy rounded out the Kenosha scoring. Superior line play was the deciding factor in the Red Devil victory, as all the boys up front did a terrific iob. KENOSHA 45 RACINE HORLICK 6 Beginning the T950 Big-8 season with fire and steam the Red Devils laid waste an inadequate and undermanned Horlick football team. With victory apparent after a few minutes play, Coach Jaskwhich played his regulars only half of the game. Alan Ameche got off to a fast pace in defending his scoring crown and scored two T. D.s in his limited appearance. Tom Braatz and Frank Aiello gave neat performances of pass catching, as they each caught one touchdown pass from Bonofiglio. Ron Rudy intercepted a Horlick aerial and sped goalward for his touchdown. Bistrick rified a pass to Girman, who picked up a convoy of blockers and sailed 55 yards to pay dirt. Dave Threinen smashed over the last stripe for the final T.D. Linemen who came in for special praise for their all around play were Tom Braatz, Ed Ron- zia, Dick Nicolazzi, Ruel McMullen, and Ray Graglia. KENOSHA 60 BELOIT 0 With unmatched power in every combination of players sent out on the field by Coach Jask- which, the Red Devils unleashed their fury to a 60 to O count. Alan Ameche made the first two touchdowns early in the first quarter on runs of ten and one yards each, while setting the ball up for his teammates to score. Bonofiglio on a naked reverse scored his first T. D. of the game and added the first of six conversions to make the score 'I9-0. With the speed and grace of an antelope, Ron Rudy scored on a 73 yard end run. Three plays later a Bonofiglio to Aiello pass garnered another six points. The most spectacular play of the game came when Bonofiglio fumbled a pass from center. Although he was apparently tackled, he zig-zagged down the field picking up blockers at every turn and scored on a 70 yard run. Girman, Bistrick, and Lovine each added to th-e score, while spectators thumbed through the record books. Every player on the squad was a hero and the line play was vicious, holding the Stateliners to only 57 yards for scrimmage. Rough stuff! KENOSHA I8 EAST I3 Amazed and somewhat embarrased by their poor showing before a hometown crowd of 8000 spectators, the Red Devils trudged wearily to the locker room at halftime, with the score 13-0 against them. During the half, Coach Jaskwhich and his assistants explained the Madison East defense to an awed and silent squad, and sent th-em back in the game with new spirit and drive. Revitalized the Red Devils flooded the airlanes with passes and smashed the Purgolder's line to pieces, they counted three times to give them- selves an T8-T3 lead, which they never gave up. Alan Ameche, the lone scorer for the Red Devils, burst around end for the first T. D. and caught two electrifying passes from Bonofiglio for the other 2 T. D.s, which covered 56 and 41 yards apiece. Ameche, Bonofiglio, and Rudy starred for the Red Devil backfield, while McMullen, Ronzia, Nicolazzi, Demske, Borowsky, Braatz, and Aiello all did terrific jobs in the line. Stars for Purgolders were Messner, Schlicht, Wurtzler, and Falch. The Kenosha vs. Madison East game was the game of the year for both players and fans. KENOSIIA 116 IANESVILLE 7 A Dad's Night crowd of 6000 fans witnessed a record breaking fete. The Red Devils scored 46 points and broke the record of 252 points held by the 1930 Kenosha team. Alan Ameche scored four touchdowns on two short plunges and two completed passes of 25 and 60 yards from Bono- figlio. Tom Braatz was the target for three other Bonofiglio passes that went for touchdowns. Bonofiglio split the uprights for four extra points. The Red D-evil's hard charging line played most of the game in the Janesville backfield. Koslu and Iovine lend a helping hand to Girmun. KENOSHA 53 CENTRAL 7 Before a homecoming crowd of 7000 fans the Red Devils swamped the Centralites for their fourth victory of the year. Leading the offense were Ameche and Rudy. Ameche tore the Central line to shreds for 198 yards and one touchdown. Ron Rudy was high point man of the game with two T. D. runs of 3 and 49 yards each. Bob Girman showed power and hustle during the whole game and counted one T. D. on a 'I7 yard tour. Bonofiglio threw a perfect pass to Aiello, which ate up 69 yards and one touchdown. Fred Bis- trick intercepted another pass for his second touchdown in two games. Bonofiglio played an all round game, scoring one T. D. and 5 points in conversions. He completed 3 out of 4 at- tempted passes for one T. D. John Iovine col- lected the final six points of the game. Braatz, Ronzia, and Demske turned in outstanding line play for the Red Devils. KENOSHA 37 PARK 7 Rated th-e highest scoring team in the state, the Red Devils lived up to their reputation and scored 37 points. This upped their season total to 240 points in 5 games. Although the regulars looked spotty, the Reds had enough punch to make the Park Panthers run for cover. Alan Ameche scored the first T. D. on a three yard plunge, which ended a 68 yard march. Bonofiglio mystifying the Racine team scored one long naked reverse. Tom Braatz caught two T. D. passes from Bonofiglio, which covered 20 and 10 yards each. .Ameche and Girman scored the two final touchdowns, and Bonofiglio kicked his lone point conversion. Coach Jaskwhich singled out Braatz, Aiello, McMullen, and Ronzia for their final vicious defensive play. Tom - sticky fingers - Braatz. Here fumes the Twentieth Century Limilelll KENOSHA 57 MADISON WEST 7 The Kenosha Red Devils swamped the West Regents and became the first Kenosha team in 26 years to boast a perfect record. Starting fast the Red Devils scored two T. D.s, a long run by Girman, and a plunge by Ameche. They bogged down to end the half 12-O. The Kenoshans picked up steam in the second half to score 45 more points. Alan Ameche scored two T. D.s in five minutes smashing the all-time scoring record of 97 points. He then added another six points to end the season with a total of 108 points scored in conference play. Iovine, Knutson, Last, and Braatz each added a touchdown, giving Kenosha a new record of 316 points in 7 games. Bonofiglio, Ameche, Braatz, Aiello, Nicolazzi, Ronzia, Borowsky, Demske, Mc- Mullen, Keul, Hayne, Mowry, Koski, Graglia, Nall, De Laat, LeSota, and Jake played terrific football in their last season for Kenosha High School. -114- INDIVIDUAL HONORS Alan Ameche, one of the greatest grid per- formers ever to wear a Kenosha uniform, again harvested a bountiful share of honors. Scoring in all grid contests and garnering 108 points in conference play, he broke the all-time Big-8 scoring record. With 12 more points in the Fond du Lac game his total for the season was 120 points. Besides his scoring crown, Ameche was voted most valuable player by his teammates and by the scribes of the Big-8 city newspapers, match- ing the '49 season when he was given the same honors. Unanimously he placed on first string in the star-studded All-Conference and Associated Press All-State prep football squad. He was rewarded by being named first string Big-8 and second team All-State. 'A' Ruel McMullen, best defensive linebacker in the Big-8 campaign and 3 year letterman was voted the first string center in the Big-8 and received second team honors in the All-State lineups. 'A' Ed Ronzia, playing his third year as a varsity tackle, was another unanimous choice for first string Big-8 and placed on the third team All- State. His ability to open and close holes made him a standout in the line. ir Vic Borowsky, rugged left guard, was first string choice for Big-8 honors and received honor- able mention on the glittering All-State squad. Borowsky played supercharged football for Kenosha. A if Stan Demske, right guard, Richard Nicolazzi, right tackle, and Frank Aiello, right end, were standouts in the line and were barely nosed out for the first string Big-8 squad. ir Rounding out the honors were Ray DeLaat, Bob Hinds, Bob Girman, and Ron Rudy, who re- ceived honorable mention in the Big-8. Sophomore Football With a season's record of tive wins and a tie the Pink Devils of KHS took undisputed championship of the Lake Shore Conference. Under the direc- tion of Coach Frank Martin the aggresive sopho- more squad was unstoppable. Only Park in the opening game of the 1950 campaign could match but not out do them and were more than satisfied to settle for a 7-7 deadlock. ln their second encounter with Park the Sophs eked out a 13- 12 victory in a real thriller. Shortly after the start of the campaign Jim Yorton, Art Last, and Dan Watring were moved up to Varsity, where they turned in creditable performances all season. They will be mainstays in Coach .task- which's 1951 grid squad. Other standouts who finished off the season with the Pinks, but will probably see a lot of Varsity action next year are, Lennie Rizzo, Buff Rutfalo and Joe Greco, all backs. Meanwhile Frank Aiello and Captain Tom Braatz were nominated to positions on the All-Big 3 squad to round out an almost perfect season for Coach Jaskwhich and his Red Devil basketeers. KENOSHA 48 LINCOLN 43 Lincoln's turn on the wheel of defeat came in the last quarter of the Keno contest, sending the Red Devils home with a happy smirk. Tom Braatz led the scoring with 17 points. Frank Aiello was right on his heel with 16 points. Spirit on the court as well as precisioned team work made this contest a treat for the fans. KENOSHA 41 MADISON EAST 63 Good but not good enough, described Kenosha in its Madison East encounter. Outclassed as they were, Kenosha's quintet battled on until the final whistle, which forced them to accept the short end of the score. Sixteen and 13 points topped the Kenosha score board as Center Frank Aiello and Captain Tom Braatz swayed the boards with rebound deliveries. Jask- which sent numerous substitutes into the game and was rewarded by Rizzo's 6 tallies and Shwaiko': 8 counters. KIQYIISII.-I 58 IIOKIJIIK 413 A fierce onslaught during the final quarters of the Horlick game was the deciding factor when the score keeper calculated the final count, giving the nod to the Kenosha Raiders. Pivoting a red hot spark plug in center position, the Reds broke the iinx of the first half and supported Frank Aiello's 26 powerful points to the fullest extent. Rebounds seemed to stick to the hands of the invading Raiders as Captain Tom Braatz and Frank Aiello alternately thwarted all attempts to salvage the game. Kl'jNOSll,'I I5 PARK 36 Home fans were treated to a follow-up triumph when another Racine foe succumbed to superb Red Devil power adding to the prestige which Kenosha protected. Frank Aiello again hooking with deadly accuracy all but melted the basket rims, as the deadly markers sizzled their way through the nets and totaled on the score board a brisk 22 points. The home court rocked with the friendly cries of victory as Keno backers cheered the brilliant floor game displayed by Joskwhich's charges. Bonofiglio captured 10 points, and Captain Braatz swished 5 points. Braatz misses a block. KENOSIL1 35 lf'l'fS'l' 57 A delayed action bombshell fell on the Red Devils when the postponed engagement at Madi- son West left Kenosha trailing by 22 points on the score board total. Aiello scrambles for the ball. 117 -f KENOSHA 52 CENTRAL 51 Crusading Centralites, resolved on victory, played with agility and exactness in a vain attempt to crush the Red Devil spirit. In the most exciting game of the 1950-51 season, the tense over-time playoff proved to be the deciding test. Here the Red Devil spirit overcame the Centralites. To break the 47-47 deadlock Keno- sha's Kishline and Aiello each snared a bucket, only to be matched by Central's Disch and Gotha. ln the last breathless moment, Shwaiko's charity toss spelled victory for Kenosha, and left the fans in ecstasy. KENOSHA 62 ,IANESVILLE 41 Kenosha, during all four quarters, thoroughly outclassed their Bluebird hosts as Jaskwhich cleared the bench for an all out attack on the nets. Bonofiglio and Aiello topped the Keno scorers with 16 tallies and Captain Tom Braatz backed up the play with 13 markers. Bistrick sunk seven markers, while big Ray Graglia settled for four. KENOSHA 54 HELOIT 43 Winning from the Stateliners seemed the most important thing in the world to the rugged Reds as they fought for victory. Braatz, Aiello, and Bistrick were top point makers, they sunk 14, 14, and 11 respectively. Coach Jaskwhich displayed a fine strategic attack on the hosts' nets. KENUSHA 51 SOUTH MILWAUKEE 39 Welcomed back to the home town, our Red Devils kept up their steady scoring pace and defeated the visiting South Milwaukee quintet by a handy 12 points overlap. Figuring in the Kenosha box score were Aiello-14 points, Bonof figlio-12 points, Bistrick-11 points, Braatz-8 points, Shwaiko-4 points, and Kishline-2 points. KENOSHA 33 IVEST 37 A final college try in the last minutes of play by a determined Kenosha squad against a spirited West squad encouraged the home fans but resulted in a close defeat for Kenosha. High scoring was shared by Bistrick and Kishline with nine points apiece. Bonofiglio's eight and Aiello's six points bolstered the Red attack. KENOSHA 50 CENTKAI, 39 The Keno Raiders were up for this one, de- termined to have no more close decisions. At the end of a close first half, Kenosha led by a mere one point. The second half was a different story, with the skill of center Frank Aiello, who made 12 counters, and Captain Braatz who chalked up 10, Kenosha won by an 11 point margin. KENOSHA 57 EAST 62 Superior floor showmanship by the Reds was not enough to down a Madison East team which consistently swished the nets. The Reds played brilliantly but could not muster enough scoring punch. Captain Tom Braatz hooked 19 points for the top Kenosha honors. Thirteen points by Mario Bonofiglio and 12 by Sam Kishline soothed the wounds of the defeated but hard playing Reds. KENOSHA 48 HOKLHIK 22 The scoreboard had a restful night, as the Kenosha quintet treated the Horlick five to a lesson in defensive play. Horlick was neatly limited to seven points in the first half and to fifteen in the last. Again Aiello was top scorer with 13 points, closely followed by Tom Braatz with 12 markers. Kishline and Bistrick each chalked up seven points. KENOSIIA L17 ,I.4NESl'Il,l,E 36 Reserves were consistently used during the Janesville siege on the home boards. The experi- enced Red Devil squad went out in front in the first half of the second contest. Captain Tom Braatz and Center Frank Aiello duplicated their feats of earlier games and split the scoring honors with 12 counters each. Eight points by Kishline and ten by Bistrick helped to deal the Bluebirds the seedy side of the box score. KENOSHA 43 PARK 38 Victory in the Big Eight again came to the rolling Reds, when their host, Park, off to a slow start, failed to muster enough energy to stop them. Sharp accuracy by Kishline and Bistrick and neat re- bound work by Aiello and Braatz kept Kenosha's hat in the regional ring. KENOSHA 39 - PARK 29 Kenosha again tasted victory as Park's offen- sive attack was forcibly stopped by the Red's tight defense. Blackboard strategy proved worth- while as man to man play wrought havoc with the opposition's accuracy. Park missed seventeen shots before Lynch connected for two points. Aiello, Braatz, and Bonofiglio put the sting into the Red Devil attack. KENOSHA 53 - SOUTH MILWAUKEE 43 In the final round Kenosha proved too much for South Milwaukee and won the regional championship. Although hampered by weather, Coach Engle and his assistant Byron Davey brought the team into excellent shape, strong in almost all events. The one-two punch of lettermen Alan Ameche, state champion, and Jim LaSota brought Kenosha many valuable points in the shot put. Ameche broke several records. His best heave of 53' 2 shat- tered the all-time Kenosha mark. Ed Ronzia, a newcomer in the discuss, grabbed the number one position from letterman Ruel McMullen. Bob Kluka, Don Hinrichs, and Bob Butera were the mainstays in the high iump. Kluka came within W' of the school record with a iump of 5' 'IlV2 . Three returning lettermen, Mario Bonotiglio, Joe Kavalauskas, and Harry Larsen, made the broad iump a strong event. Fred Batassa and Bob Lees were the star pole vaulters. Ron Rudy and Dick Bundies, both lettermen, won in both hurdle events. Lettermen Ameche and Glen Thompson were assisted by Joe Greco, Bob Girman, Ronnie Bunda, and Ed Palmen in the 100 and 200 yard dash. Paul Shwaiko, Norm Neilson and Bob Meissner did splendid work in the 440 yard dash. Bob Cumiskey, much improved from last year, earned many points with his creditable times. John Rohde and Keith Crawford battled it out for number one man in the mile. Promising men who will be back next year are Kluka, Butera, Hinrichs, Lees, Girman, Bunda, Greco, Bundies, Neilson, Zura, and Crawford. e Bud Mc Cow Trophy for the Best All- Round Athlete, Student and Leader - Ed Rongio. The K.H.S. golfers led by Phil Skovronski, Don Ferkin, Jerry Houbrich, Mario Bonofiglio, and Sam Kishline have iust completed their most successful season in three years. The team, bolstered by competitive spirit and drive, led a dark horse into the limelight. Finishing eighth in the Hartford Tournament held at Hartford, Wisconsin, the team also came through with a place in the State Tournament at Nakoma and a rating in the Big 8 at Janesville. Phil Skovronski and Jerry Haubrich have com- pleted three years of varsity competition, while Don Ferkin and Sam Kishline are rounding out their second season of play. Upcoming prospects for next year's team will be led by Jerry Adamson, Nick Perry, Clarence Niemi, and Elmer Martin. -all - T MEN UF This year many records have been broken, but the record set by Mario Bonofiglio in his three years of athletic participation will stand for a long time. Versatile Mario, the only ten letter man in K. H. S. history, has 3 letters for football, 3 for basketball, 3 for track, and l for golf. ln football Mario's passing ability earned him a berth on the Big 8 and All State teams, and a place in the North-South game. ln basketball his sharp shooting and fine defensive play was the sparkplug of the Kenosha Five. ln track he placed a consistent first or second in the broad lump. To THE YEAH round out the record he shoots nine holes of golf in the low forties. The Spy congratulates Mario Bonofiglio, K. H. S. athlete of the year. The trophy awarded to the outstanding partici- pant in each sport this year is as follows: Football - Alan Ameche Basketball - Tom Braatz Swimming - Don Lucas Cross Country - Bob Cumiskey -125- PATHIINS Alice's Curtain Shop ......... 5915 Sixth Ave American Legion Post 21 Appliance Television . . . Kenosha has 42 manufacturing concerns with a total employment in excess of 18,000 and a current annual pay roll of 3360 million. The manufacturing structure of the community includes such basic American industries as auto- mobiles, furniture, brass and copper and alloy products, and textiles, as well as nationally known producers of mechanic's tools, wire rope, plumbing supplies, equipment for the dairy and food industries, fire fighting equipment and commercial fertilizer. There are also several smaller estab- lishments making industrial tools, dies, jigs and fixtures, special machinery, castings and structural steel products. Two out of every three wage earners of Kenosha are employed in the manufacturing plants and their pay checks are shared directly or indirectly by everyone in the community as each pay roll dollar circulates widely, turning over approximately seven times as it moves through the chan- nels of trade. Behind Kenosha's industrial pay checks are the knowledge and skills of the community's indus- trial employees and the courage and vision of the men and women who invested the money neces- sary to provide plant facilities and machinery. The Kenosha industrial family, working in harmony with business and professional people, educators, the clergy, and other citizens as individuals and as groups, have built a community which is noted throughout the nation as a good example of the accomplishments possible under our present free and enterprising American way of doing business.
