'Ain A A DEDICATIO Advertising patrons are rarely thought of as more than a means of financial backing, al- though it has been noted that more than once they have helped the class When the Way Was steep, and that Without their aid any Barker at all would be quite impossible. Perhaps a fact not so Widely considered is that this support is more than a mere momentary gesture, necessary though that may be: it is indicative of the good will and interest Bradford's busi- ness men have so freely shown in the young people of their schools. And that is Why the class of 1940 dedicates this Barker to the advertising patronsg as a token of grateful acknowledgment and sincere appreciation. APPRfclATloN 0 . 'I o 11's Q. .,.o ul ' ,n i'-'Y H ' o 3 MISS BARFARA CLARK MR. FO D Vlfaf ELLENBE GER l Though not expressed in so many Words, our feeling of thanks and appreciation for Mr. Ellenberger and Miss Clark, our ad- visers, has been ever present in our minds during the years Which they have so faithfully Worked for our class. These two, Who ad- orrovvs and defeats, and remained near in our triumphs, receive our sincere thanks vised us, helped us, shared our s unobtrusively for their part in making our days in BHS What they have been to us. A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT The time will soon be here when members of the class of 1940 will leave the Bradford Senior High School to enter new and varied fields of acti- vity. Some of you have definite plans for the future and others are yet undecided what you wish to do, but I am sure that you all have a deeply-rooted desire to succeed in whatever field you enter. We wish you the utmost success but you must remem- ber that success in life does not just happen. It is usually the result of a plan of life founded upon a firm purpose, and pushed by a stout heart, a strong will, and an enthusiastic spirit. There are no short cuts to truly successful, happy living. Alfred Tennyson has said, Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control-these three alone lead life to sovereign power. If we know our- selves thoroughly, our limitations as well as our possibilities, and respect and control ourselves in accordance with that knowledge we are sure to achieve a measure of success proportionate to the effort We put forth. As Rebecca R. Williams has so aptly expressed it: One ship goes East, another West By the self-same winds that blow. 'Tis the set of the sail, and not the gale That determines the way they go. Like the winds of the sea are the Ways of fate As we journey along thru life. 'Tis the set of the sail that decides the goal, And not the calm or the strife. BOARD OF EDUCATION President .......... Although our previous experience in the building during our seventh grade afforded us some comfort, we found ourselves somewhat bewildered and filled with awe. Mr. Schilling called our first meeting in October at which we chose the following class oflicers: James Ferry, Gordon Fiske, Helen Goodman, Betty Girard and our adviser, Mr. Ford Ellenberger. With Washington now only three years away we started to make money for our trip. We pre- sented Tom Sawyer as our first activity and later we sold compacts with much success. We presented for the student body an assembly program and the Annual Ath- letic Banquet for the football players. And so we ended our sophomore year. We had worked hard and gained know- ledge and satisfaction from it. As Juniors we came back to a somewhat different school. Construction was already started on the new wing and vocational school. We were again going half days but this time our class was divided. Despite these adverse con- ditions, we organized our class and elected the following officers: Milton Brandow, Mary Lynn Carrier, and Betty Girard. Mr. Ellenberger was re-elected as our class adviser. Later we presented a successful play The Adorable Age. As our last activity we held the annual Junior-Senior Prom in honor of the Seniors. So under a new principal, Mr. Prettyman, and in the mists of hammers and saws, we ended our junior year. We entered our senior year with great hopes and am- bitions for scholastic attainments and social activities. In order to raise money for our nearing Washington trip the class sold candy and hot dogs at the football games. We had a football hop and a Leap Year Dance both of which were deemed successful. After much planning we had our Bazaar on February 17. With the results from these acti- vities to raise money, the class presented June Mad on March 15. Then on March 25, 178 over-joyed and excited Seniors started on their long awaited trip to the Capitol. Space does not permit giving the details of those five glorious days of sightseeing so it is suificient to say we returned home happy, feeling that our three years of work were not in vain. The last three months of our high school career passed much too quickly, and all too soon it was time for us to leave. With Commencement three of the happiest and most eventful years of our lives were brought to a close. Three years association with an understanding, patient faculty and endearing friends whom we shall never forget. 14 SENIGR OFFICERS President ......,.,.. ,....,.... With an inexperienced squad, the Owls managed to sweep through 11 successive league victories before meeting defeat, and although they iinally were barely nosed out by Warren for league honors, they at least deserve credit for their sensational early season play. With the aid of their new sliding zone defense, next- year's Owls-six Veterans and the entire Junior Varsity- should hit their stride in great style. Bradford loses six lettermen, including Capt. Richard Walker, but Coach Brace is quite optimistic about his choices for 1941. Let's all hope he comes through again!
