Francis T. Meagher. We want him to know that we will not forget his sincere endeavors to help this class and this college. 3 4 Preszaent '5 Message January 31, 1964 You members of this class, our associates and I have the very challenging responsibility for the constant improvement of our College. This is the common duty of everyone associated with any college. The sum of the individual endeavors determines the essence of the whole, the character of the institution. I was deeply apprecia- tive of the contribution of the Class of 1964 in our joint effort when the Chairman of the Examining Committee said that the primary reason for their recommending our accreditation was the integrity and dedication of those associated with the College. It is a pleasure to contemplate that your proven capacity for thoughtful, mature judgment, which was so helpful here, will con- tribute so much to the solution of the countless social problems which confront us. I wish you every success and personal satisfaction in your various careers. It was not one easily come by nor would it be easily mastered. We were welcomed by George Attar, president of the Student Council, and honored at a Get acquainted dance. Six of the freshmen girls' were chosen for the cheering squad. The student council provided many opportunities during the holidays for us to get a good glimpse of the social life at college. February brought the election of class officers and we chose Joe Laliberte, president, Donald Lavoie, vice-presi- dent, Dick Szaro, secretary, and Stan Peckham, treasurer. During March our interests turned toward the frater- nities and sororities at college. This was our chance to . . . 1961-1962 Having mastered the art of cramming for final exams, we enter our sophomore year with our aims held high. Many changes were brought to our lives at Durfee Col- lege this year. Epsilon Phi Pi introduced its REEB. The Circle K was formed. ACCREDITATION! The word cannot be shouted too loudly. A whole new being has taken a grip on the school with progress, promise, and dedication being an integral part of its purpose. Being accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, we are now ofhcially the Bradford Durfee College of Technology. Every- one continues striving for the improvement of our facilities and the establishment of important and necessary program- ming to insure the continuance of our newly acquired standing. This is a great step forward for the student, for it opens many doors, that were closed until now. 1962-1963 After a trying but successful sophomore year we are now juniors. The following were elected class officers for the year 5 John Boyle, president, Willian Caine, vice-presi- dent, Doreatha Aguiar, secretaryg Kevin Travis, treasurer. PHI PSI opens the college social calendar with the an- nouncement of the forthcoming marriage of their mascot Chug to the beautiful Jugs. December brought a new college lecture series, a trip to New Hampshire for the Geology Club, and a new frat house for Epsilon Phi Pi. A Bacchanalian Fiesta was held by the junior class at the Bluffs in Swansea. It was a tremendous success and helped defer the costs of our junior prom. A The big event of the year was our Junior Prom held on Friday, May 10. Festivities began with a cocktail hour at the Belmont Club in Fall River. The program then tumed to dining and dancing at the Cliff Walk Manner in New- port, R. I. A final blast was given at the summer home of Barry McDonald in Island Park which wound up the fes- tivities of the day. 1963-1964 If it is true that He who has tilled the summer soil shall reap the rice of fall, let it be said of every member of our class. For only through hard work, strong determination, and sacrifice could we have reached this point in life. We look forward to an exciting fruitful year with the election of the following class officers, Phil Medeiros, presi- dent, Louis Tartaglia, vice-president, Doreatha Aguiar, secretary, and Bill Fitzgerald, treasurer. The Cotillion room in Taunton provided Kappa Sigma Phi with a setting for their Hrst big dance. Congratulations are in order for Kappa who will be bidding for more soror- ity members than ever before. As seniors our First big dance of the year was bela at Stone Bridge Inn, and proved a tremendous Financial and social success. With the approaching city elections it was our privilege to hear Mayor John Arruda and Mayor elect Roland G. Desmarias speak on their campaign and city political issues. Grief struck us as well as the rest of the world with the death of our beloved and dedicated president John F. Kennedy. He will always live in the hearts and minds of free people, as a great leader of a free nation. Student Council SITTING: C. Kalilg C. Fairhurstg STANDING: N. Sasseville, advisorg P. Only four men were lost through graduation last year and Coach Jack Furtado will have ten lettermen returning to the fold in 1964. Veterans returning for their last year of competition will be Co-Capts. Doug Bailey and Bill Ca- mara, pitchers, Phil Violette, l1'1HCldCI', and Joe Houde and John McDonald, outfielders. Quite a few of last years outstanding area high school baseballers are enrolled as freshmen at Durfee College this year, and will be able to compete due to the new athletic rule allowing freshmen to participate in varsity sports. Coach Jack Owen hopes that at least a few of these ex- high schoolers will be able to measure up to the higher caliber of college ball played in the Southern New England Conference. All in all it looks like a fine season coming up for the engineers. For our fellow seniors playing in their last sea- son, good luck and our hopes for a S.N.E.C. championship. SOCCER The Durfee College Soccer team, plagued by injuries throughout the year, finished the 1963 campaign with a 2-9 record. Although statistically this record is anything but impressive, spirit wise, the Engineers record was per- fect. Led by Capt. Jack Owen the Engineers gave a good ac- count of themselves in every game. Many of the losses were only by one or two goals, and many were lost in the clos- ing minutes of the game. Seniors playing in their last game for the Engineers were Capt. Jack Owen, Bill Clithero, Joe Houde, Phil Violette, Ronnie Friar, Bud Thompson, and Glenn Shoesmith. To these seniors and to the rest of the ball club we extend our congratulations for their following of the old adage, It's not if you win or lose, but how you play the game. 86 ' 1 IILLI mm.
