STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Student Government Association of Bradford is made up of the entire student hodv, and is headed by a council of twelve. The Council consists of a president and a vice-president, who are seniors, a secretary-treasurer from the freshman class, three senior members-at-large, three freshman memhers-at-large, the chairman of the House Committee, and the president of the senior and freshman clafsts. The purpose of the Student Government is to make and enforce rules which regulate the college life and guarantee the welfare of the students. It is an organization to help the girls with any problems which may arise individually or in a group. Here at Bradford we live in a miniature democratic community in which the girls learn to adjust themselves and live accordingly to the regulations set up hy the Council. This year, one of the most important aims of the Council has been in promoting the idea of individual and group responsibility. The student hodv has shown interest in earnestly helping to share and participate in the Governments activities. Outside of the governing functions of the Council, it has sponsored a dance for midshipmen from Harvard. The Council has also drawn up the Freshman Handbook which has been very successful and helpful to the incoming freshman. With the guidance and advice of Miss Bell and Miss Adkins, thc Student Government ,Xssociation has had an interesting and successful year. Chairmen serving the first half of the year are always a group of seniors, each one choosing her assistant, usually a freshman, in order to represent the entire student body. The second half of the year, each corridor elects its own representatives. From this group, the president and secretary are elected who also serve for just one term. In order to insure helpful cooperation between the two governing bodies, the president of House Committee is a member of the Student Government Council, and from time to time, the president of the student government attends the House Committee meetings. Listed among some of the House Committees accomplishments this year was the system worked out for answering the telephones on each floor. No longer is one bothered by the incessant ringing of a phone. Then the conjestion around the post office was partially eliminated by sketches and sign posts in that area. To add to these is the new project of salvaging paper started by the war council. House Committee has cooperated by rounding up a different volunteer from each corridor for the job every week. Drain stopped up, iron doesn't heat, 'glass in the door of fourth east broken again, no plugs in the laundrys and the rubber spray won't spray, T00 IWNM Noire. All these items and many many more are reported to House Committee and taken care of as quickly and efficiently as is possible. In order to keep the student body up to date on House Committee activities, corridor meetings are held each month to discuss any situations that might need improvement or any suggestions to help keep the House running smoothly. The council has a dual purpose: First and foremost to lay emphasis upon the im- portance of the religious element in college life: Secondly, to select the particular philan- thropies to which the contributions of the students go. The council began its activities this year with a reception for the freshmen during the opening week of school. Later in the fall came the Book Fair in which every council member participated. :Xt Christmas time the college gave the traditional children's party which was sponsored by the Christian Union council. This party is given for the Children of servicemen in Haverhill. ln the winter the C. U. sponsored a Religious Ihiiphasis weekg this took place during Lent. One of the questions discussed at this conference was, Why is it there is such a great interest in religion shown in our armed forces as illustrated in the quotation 'there is no athiest in a fox hole'fll There was further discussion on this question and others in the informal conference periods which followed in the afternoon. Many feel that with the numerous interests in college one tends to lose sight of the importance of the spiritual side of life. The Christian Union wants to see that the importance of religion is brought out in our every day living. THE WAR COUNCIL The War Council is an all-student organization with ten student representatives. lt has been the attempt of this council to make the students feel that we are actually making a stand with our nation in bringing about victory. Such duties as the National War Fund, the Red Cross Drive, a clothes campaign for Greek War Relief, paper salvage, a collection of articles for soldier kits, and the sales of War bonds and stamps have played a major part in the VVar Council activities. With the willing participation of the students, faculty, and staff the council exceeded its quota in the War fund drive with the iinal total being 51,296 Every Saturday morning students have baled paper for the paper salvae. Not only the students and faculty but the citizens of Haverhill and Bradford helped to donate six pounds of clothing for Greek War Relief. With the collection of hard candy, pocket- book editions, and pencils the Red Cross was able to make up soldier kits to send over-seas. A victory basketball game and a fair helped to boost the sales of War bonds and stamps. For the first time this year the War Council has had a faculty supervisor. We are very indebted to Miss Helmes and wish to thank her for generous help throughout the year. THE MASQUERADERS Masqueraders, the dramatic club of Bradford, has as its chief aim the Widening and enriching of each member's understanding and enjoyment of the theatre. In its Weekly meetings, work-shop plays are given, plays are reviewed, talks and discussions on the theatre are held, and the members have opportunities to use their talents. The club this year organized a new activity which was open to the entire school- membership in the Theatre Guild. We had fifty-six members of the guild and saw plays such as Sing Out Sweet Land and Foolish Notion. This project has contributed greatly to furthering the interest of all of us in the theatre. This winter we gave a most stirring Christmas Pageant in collaboration with the Glee Club. Later, We presented two one-act plays for the public: Women Who Wait, by Lydia Nagel and The Princess Marries the Page, by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Our Commencement Play this year was given on Fathers' Day, April 28, and we had a very fine three-act production. Masqueraders has had a most successful, large club this year due to the enthusiasm of its members and the guidance of its faculty advisor, Miss lylors. Dedication For his sincere help and advice in our journalistic problemsg for his keen understanding in the classroom3 for his quick smile and ready humor outside the class- roomg for his Warmth and friendliness towards us all5 for his enthusiasm and encouragement in all our activ- ities5 for being one we will associate with our happiest memories of Bradford, we the Senior Class of 1945 dedicate our ANNALS to Edmond M. Gagey. Glee Club Of the three major campus clubs, the Glee Club is the largest. On Mothers' Day, in collaboration with Masqueraders, we presented the Christmas Choral Pageant. This traditional Pageant depicts the story of the Nativity in pantoinine and song. The joint concert of the Governor Dummer Academy Glee Club and the Bradford Glee Club was the tirst week end in April. They were guests for dinner and a dance which followed the concert. Our next joint concert was held on the third week end in April with the Harvard Glee Club at Bradford. Also in April a small group of the Glee Club sang for the wounded soldiers at the Lovell General Hospital at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Our twenty-eighth annual concert with Andover was held on the first week end in May at Andover. It is interesting to note that the Bradford Glee Club and the Andover Glee Club were the first to initiate these joint concerts. The many hours devoted to the Glee Club by Mr. johnson, director, and Miss Merritt, accompanist, have made this year one of the most successful in the history of the Glee Club. TABOOS The Taboos were organized in 1943 by some girls who enjoyed singing group harmony and who had fun doing it in their spare time. This year we've carried on from where they left off and feel that we have made the Taboos a closer knit unit than ever before. We've introduced some new songs such as 'gDown in Jungle Town, My Little Girli' and Down Among the Sheltering Pines. This year the Taboos played a big part in the Senior Show by furnishing background music as well as performing in front of the curtain on a few numbers. As last year, the Taboos have been the favorite source of entertainment at all school get-togethers. We hope that the six freshmen taken in the Taboos this year will help us establish our group as one of Bradford's traditions. If they have enjoyed participating in the group half as much as we have, we know that they will make every effort to do so. ., . -. - ' ll '7 S f il N X Flksr Row: Kate Wadsxxnrth, joan Stewart, Patricia Congdnn, Patricia O'Sullii'an, Helen Joyce, jean Francisco, Srrrsltlryg Monique Younger, Prwitfnzlg Clare Webster, Juan Nlilchell, Barbara Ewing, Margaret Lucas, Katherine Stanley, Secoxn Row: Carol Putney, Elizabeth Ashe, Nancy Adams, Betsy Alexander, Margaret Cummings, Barbara VVells, Priscilla Peabody, Clare Kittredge, Diane Chamberlaine, Louise Berry, julia Frederick, Elena McGrath, Elizabeth Bell, Nancy Hoffmann, Sally Prescott. THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES CLUB The Romance Languages Club is interested not only in France but in Spain and ltaly. lt is concerned with the cultural, political, and social aspects of these countries. At each French meeting the members sing the lllizrrfifftzife, France's national anthem, in honor of her rebirth. The Song of Liberation has been learned, remembering France's massacred dead, for they are not only her mourning and pride, but the light to show the road which leads to her new grandeur. We have been introduced to Spain politically and socially. lVllle. Damazy gave us a colorful picture of the country in a talk on its habits and social customs. Elena McGrath spoke to us about Buenos Aires, one of the centers of Spanish influence in South America. Mrs. Fivian presented us with a clear picture of Spain's turn to Fascism, from the civil war up to the present day. Northern Africa with its mixture of Arabian and Spanish atmosphere was discussed also. On the lighter side, French popular records were played for the purpose of showing the difference between them and our American popular songs. Highlighting the events of the year in the Romance Languages Club was a film showing the intense and excellent work of the French underground. Films of Paris with others elected shorts were also shown. FIRST Row: Jeannette Beach, Muriel Horne, Dorothy Crance, Ann Tuller. CAMERA CLUB This year the Camera Club has attempted to give its members an understanding of their cameras as Well as developing and printing of their films. Some of the members have brought in prints which have been criticized by Mr. Dangerheld and the group as a Whole. We have supplemented this with several lectures on topics such as how to develop pictures successfully and easily. One of the most interesting meetings we had was learning the technique of lighting. Several girls acted as models while Mr. Danrgerheld told us of the different techniques of lighting and their effects. Members took pictures from different angles and at the next meeting We showed the prints which were discussed. We have also shown slides, both colored and black and White. During the Spring the club Went on Walks around the campus taking pictures of the different picturesque spots. BRADFORD FORUM The Bradford Forum meets twice a month for discussion, movies or outside speakers. lt is a very informal group in which every student is allowed to object to statements made and present her side of the question. The biggest program for this year was an election for President and Vice-President of the United States held in the school. Committees were formed to malte posters and tix up voting booths. Miniature ballots were printed and the entire student body, the faculty and the school employees voted on the national election day. To inform the students as to the main issues of the election, both a Democratic and Republican repre- sentative spolte to the student body. A movie has been shown on the problems of food supply in wartime England, a local C.l.O. leader spoke to the forum members and we have had club discussions on such subjects as the election and both liuropean and Pacitic war fronts. Our aim is to acquaint the members with national and international affairs and so arouse an interest that will be extended into the future. This aim would never have been realized without the interest and guidance of Dr. Moss to whom we express our appreciation. Julia KEIlIl8y ! Outside speakers and movies help to enlighten us on these and many other subjects. For the first time this year there has been organized a Massachusetts State Student Association of which Bradford is one of the charter members. The oilicers are elected for one year and this year Bradford held the office of recording secretary. The club has had four meetings and is Working hard to become an ellicient and well organized unit. With the Home Economics Club Working in close harmony with this association We hope to work out some very interesting plans for next year. The editorial staff, comprised of two seniors and one freshman, was organized live years ago. The editorial staff reports on the academic, social, and extra-curricular activities of the students, as well as the activities of the faculty members and the news of the alumnae. ln addition to its regular function, the Gazette editors collaborate with the news editors of Quill and edit the Past Perfect section of that magazine, which is a review of the Bradford news. For the first time this year, the Gazette editors have had the opportunity of being members of the college board of Mademoiselle magazine. As members of the college board, the editors have been trying out for the position of guest editor of the college issue of lVIademoiselle. This column owes its success to Dr. Gagev, who has been of great assistance to us during the year, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his help. The editors have gained experience in writing this column for you and they have enjoyed doing it. -. X as r,.?.... I s 1 1 f --iii ,J 41'1f Athletic Association The Athletic Association is made up of the entire student body. lts main purpose is to stimulate the student in various competitive and non-competitive sports. Those sports offered by the A. A. are as follows: Field Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, Modern Dancing, Tennis, Swimming, Golf, Archery, Badminton, Fencing, Riding, Skiing, and Lacrosse. Each sport is under the direction of a student manager chosen at the beginning of the school year and supervised by coaches. Every year tournaments are held in tennis, badminton, and archery. This fall we were honored by the presence of Miss Betty Weber, assistant coach to Miss Jane Hesslein. Together with Mrs. Dangeriield, head of the Physical Education Department, we have had a most successful year. V During the fall and winter seasons respectively, Senior-Freshman hockey and basketball games have been of outstanding interest to everyone. ln November a chosen hockey team made up of Seniors and Freshman went to Boston for the All College Field Day. At this Field Day two members of the team, one a senior and one a freshman, were chosen to play on the All College team against the All Bostoni' team. Needless to say, our hockey season was lots of fun and all honors go to the Freshmen who were victorious over the Seniors this season. After exams we migrated to Conway for the weekend and it was here that the Ski Club was so Well represented. In March we had the Bradford Gym Meet where the entire student body participates in gymnastic skills and techniques. This was followed on the same day by the annual Meet between the Green and Red, I Spring brought forth our traditional Field Day which includes the tennis finals, and the Student-Faculty softball game followed by the awarding of athletic cups to winning teams of the year. Father's Day in April presented a spectacle that will never be forgotten-The Father's and Daughter's baseball game which always proves to be one of the most outstanding events of the year. V At Commencement time in June under the direction of Mrs. Dangerfield we had our traditional Dance Fete in which the Modern Dancers display their latest talents. This, I might add, was most impressive. We are most grateful to Mrs. Dangerfield, Miss Hesslein and Miss Weber for all that they have done and especially for the fun we had working with them. Without their guidance and sense of humor this year would not have been so successful. ARCHERY HOCKEY 1 m U 'L' rs O '1 Q 24 '17 N 2 N4 C. J U C 'L' L2 U a, U z FZ A o .4 V, 1- CQ w.
