A AL 10 P.M. and After Upon ten strokes of the clock, When the night is beginning to lower, Comes a pause in the day's occupation That is known as retiring hour. I hear in the hall beyond me The patter of little feet, A knock, and the door must be opened. Comef' in a voice soft and sweet. From her room she had seen the lamplight, On return from the Faculty fete, As the twain sat writing their essays And knew not the hour was late. A whisper, - and then a silence, Yet she knew by the look in their eyes They were plotting and planning together She had taken them by surprise. A sudden rush from my papers, A sudden twist of the light, The red portiere left swinging 1, As I hastily made my flight. With a crash I leap o'er the bedside, My feet suspended in air.
