Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1978 volume:

THE 1978 GBA FALCONIAN Lights! Camera! Action! These three words prefa every major production and ours is no exception. This year, the 1978 Falconi an has attempted to change its format and provide you with a different type of produc- tion. It s not your usual yearbook, but the class of 78 wasn't your usual senior class. It's not a production, in the literal sense of the word, but has every aspect of a play or movie. It took hours upon hours of time and effort for this one final product. Product!, it sounds like such a blah word, for our, the class of 1978's, book of dreams, memories, and good times. The major function of this book is to make you remember the goofy things you did, not only as a senior, but also as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. Of course, we can’t capture every single memory and laugh you had but many of the memories and thoughts are here. As you go through the next 164 pages remember all the things GBA stood for - dreams and hopes, victories and defeats, laughs and tears, smiles and frowns, ups and downs, fun and work, A's and F's, and spirit and love. The words of our Alma Mater say it all so plainly, The spirit of love and concern for our brother is the motto of GBA. As you look at the following pages, don't only vis- ualize but use your imagination a little and remember the day, the memory, that goes with it. Maybe, the pictures aren't full color or exactly as you'd like but try to imagine anyway. After all that is the purpose of this book - for though years may pass and the class of '78 will change, our memories of senior year w on't. The one thing we must always remember is to view- life as we did our senior year with eager eyes and anxious hearts. So now it's on with the show! Class of 1978-This is your life. Joyce Simak 2 To ev'rything there is a season, nd a time for ev'ry purpose under aven. Turn, turn, turn, Turn, turn, turn. f k. . b R TURN! TURN! TURN! (To Everything There Is A Season) To ev rything there is a season, And a time for ev'ry purpose under heaven. To ev'rything (juxn, ttrrn, tu rf) there is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for ev'ry purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die; A time to plant, a time to reap; A time to kill, a time to heal; A time to laugh, a time to weep. To ev'rything (turn, turn, turn) there is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for ev'ry purpose under heaven A time to build up, a time to break down; A time to dance, a time to mourn; A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together. To ev'rything there is a season And a time for ev’ry purpose under heaven. A time to gain, a time to love; A time to rend, a time to sew; A time to love, a time to hate; A time for peace, I swear it's not too late. 2 3 6-31 46-47 58-59 80-81 THE WAY Proudly Presenting GBA Alive......... THE SENIORS The class of 1978, consisting of 152 unique individuals, started a journey four years ago. In those four years, each of these separate in- dividuals grew to a certain point of maturity, a point where they are now, almost ready for the world and to say farewell to GBA. On June 9th, 1978, each of these individuals will have reached the summit of his journey, a destination that each worked long and hard to attain. It seemed at times like they'd never make it, but here they are! The one and only CLASS OF 1978. The following pages are pictures of your dearest and closest friends. Maybe right now the pictures won't mean much, but in a few years from now, when you look through the senior pictures, you'll remember 1978 and especially that special, crazy, senior year! 9 Linda Campbell LYNN faleman 10 12 Victoria Fall tcher 14 17 Beve -r rly Malone KIM” ' : du. 20 Douglas DO 21 22 24 25 26 27 29 30 aul Zawo DIALING FOR SENIORS A Amos, Cloretha MCLO 1518 Electric Ave., E. They include the Juniors (class of 1979) and the Sophomores (class of 1980). For the most part, the underclassmen were a vital part of GBA stu- dent life - taking part in school activities such as student council, band, chorus, choir, etc., and adding to the school spirit of the student body. As underclassmen, the high point for the juniors is the prom. They do an excellent job in planning, raising money, and putting together an event to remember always and forever. The sophomores, while not sponsor- ing any special event, are also quite involved in student activities. Here at GBA, underclassmen make up about 60% of the student body and as seniors, we, the class of 1978, would like to salute you and say thanks for the terrific memories. Homeroom 13 ROW I: M. They are the things we all look forward to after a long dull week in school. On the following pages you will see the high points of the year as we saw them. This year's special events included a night pep rally, homecoming, a Valentine Dance, a junior class dance, a Christmas Concert, band concert, spring concert, and junior prom. In a sense, they are the center of all school spirit and student involvement. Clubs and organizations at GBA include sororities, prom committee, student council, newspaper, office aids and secretaries, chorus, choir, band, colorguard, majorettes, stage crew, and year- book. Each group in its own way contributes to the betterment of the school. Participation in these groups is open to all students. iv S j O Of om CHANEL 81 ROW I: T. Thomas, T, Coburn, D. Prysock, T. Funyak THE GUIDING LIGHT A very important aspect of student activities is having dedicated and reliable sponsors; for this reason, GBA is more than lucky. Here at GBA we have some of the finest and most dedi- cated sponsors possible. The faculty, sponsors of extracurricular activities, work many extra hours to make sure that their particular group is well advised. We would like to pay tribute to these people. The sponsors of the senior class, Mr. Hruby and Mr. Chappie, guided the seniors in fund raising and planned the senior banquet. Mr. Schlanger, die student council sponsor, helped to organize all student activities in the school. Junior sponsors, Mrs. Struth and Mrs. D'And- rea advised the prom committee in its efforts to plan this year's prom, they also served as experts in training the GBA cheerleading squad. Sophomore sponsor, Mr. Rawson, put a lot of effort into advising the sophomore class and al- though they didn't sponsor an activity, he really worked hard. Mr. Hruby, sponsor of the GBA Spirit, helped to make the students more aware of school activities and happenings. Choral di- rector, Mrs. Fan- taski, served as sponsor to chorus and choir and she also sponsored the majorettes and colorguard with Mr. Kimes. Ms. Rez- nik, the sponsor and advisor of the GBA Falconian Yearbook, constantly encour- aged the staff to produce a high qual- ity product. She always provided the inspiration and con- fidence we needed when deadlines were pressing. So to our faculty sponsors we say, Thanks!” II I o chanmcl 95 The faculty and administration of Gen- eral Braddock, along with family and friends of Mrs. Edna Guerrieri, gathered at Quality Court East for a much deserved tribute to an outstanding and dedicated wo- man. Mrs. Guerrieri was honored by sev- eral fine speakers, including Mr. Burton, Mr. Oriss, Mrs. Fantaski, and her hus- band, a former school director. After the meal Mr. Oriss presented Edna with a collage of mementos representing her 25 years of experience in the school district. In her years of service at Scott, Edna showed a genuine interest in the success of all the students. There aren’t enough words to tell such a wonderful person how much she is loved and how much she'll be missed. We, the class of '78 dedicate this year's FALCONTAN to a great and special lady, Mrs. Edna Guerrieri. We wish Mrs. Guerrieri the best of luck in the future and sadly say farewell. ( O 50 2mo o ANOTHER WORLD June 9, 1978, is a day that will linger in the memory of the senior class of 1978 forever. For it was at 7 P. M. that the four years of struggle and hard work had reached its climatic end. The 7th Annual GBA Commence- ment Exercises were a beautiful end to a beautiful 4 years. This year's valedictorian was Kerry Kerlin and the salutatorian was Anthony DeVito. Of the graduates, 4 students graduated with high honor and 17 graduated with honor. Participating in the graduation program were the Rev. Martha Ann Mattner, who offered the invocation, Superintendent Mr. Rocco Stio, Principal Mr. Albert Burton and the Rev. E.L. Coleman, who gave the benediction. The General Braddock Area Highlander Choir, under the di- rection of Mrs. Jane Bates Fantaski, presented two musical selections, Day by Day and If You Believe . After the awarding of the diplomas by Mr. Bernard Tomasic, President of the General Braddock Board of Direc- tors, the class of 1978 marched out of the auditorium to the strains of Ceremonial March and into their new lives. GOOD-BYE, GOOD LUCK by DOUG MAYER 0 so near, to the day, that we leave, some will laugh, some will cry, 1 shall grieve; Are you ready, for the next step, down the day? Save the memories, that we have, from yesterday; May your dreams, all come true, and I hope they do. If you’d only, wish the.same, for me. There are still, many things, that we should know. So we'll try, try to learn them, as we go; Must we move on, through the changes, we may face? Can we come back, from behind, and win the race? May your dreams, all come true, and I hope they do. If you’d only, wish the same, for me. 1 remember, all the good times, that we’ve had, I remember, there were times, when we were sad; Have you thought of, how to earn, yourself a name? Do you realize, we will never, be the same? May your dreams, all come true, and I hope they do. If you'd only, wisrf the same, for me. OUR LIVES 149 SUPERFRIENDS This year, as every year, we pause on this page to say thanks to all the little people who are so often over- looked. There aren't as many people to thank as last year, but they’re all just as important - if not more so. As editor, I would first like to extend a giant thanks to Mr. John Reznik. He worked long and hard and was so devoted to our cause, he should have been editor instead of me. He's quite a man and deserves a medal just for putting up with all the aggravation. Also, countless thanks go out to our Principal, Mr. Burton, who was always there to offer his help, and of course to our Superintend- ent, Mr. Stio, and the school board who helped us with funding. We also must extend our thanks to Jim Berent, John Habarka, Janet Reznik and Janice Simak for the hours they spent on the art work for the yearbook and for their undying dedication. All of these people contributed greatly to make our book a success, but most of the thanks this year goes to one outstanding lady, my advisor, Miss Reznik. Few people realize the time, effort, and love she puts into everything she does - especially the FALCONIAN. There aren’t enough words to express the thanks and gratitude for her concern for a continually improving book. She never gave up faith - and for the last two years inspired me never to give up either - thus we managed to publish this book, THE 1978 FALCONIAN.
