RANIH 'HAND Texans of old delight in recalling the light-hearted gather- ings of cowpokes about a pot of coffee and a heap of smoulder- ing embers in the days when the rugged pioneers of the Texas frontier relived the adventurous activities of the time. Today we of Brackenridge realize parallel satisfaction when grazing through the choice pastures of literature, roving through the sometimes clinging reeds of mathematics, or herding together at the salt lick of knowledge. Class study, after all, is the strongest link between high school learning and its application. The dances, the banquets, the frivolities, all pass away with the whistling wind. The truly refreshing substance of edu- cation is the intermingling of newly-conceived ideas with those of companions as capable of giving as of receiving. Oversee- ing all, of course, are the instructors, or foremenp yet without the generous presentation of trail-blazing thoughts, classes can be as colorless as an albino stallion. The flitting spirit of class-room controversy cannot be captured by picture or print. The initial realization of new vistas so often first breaks upon consciousness during some unrehearsed class-room parry, that there can be few more valuable experiences in high school than the friendly blend- ing of differing ideas that ultimately result in a loftier appre- ciation of those finer loves ot life ahead. Cuwjlmncfiers . Adorned in the caps and gowns symbolic of scholastic achievement, the Brackenridge Senior Class made a dignified but reluctant departure May 29 at the Municipal Auditorium, participating in an imposing graduation cere- mony that brought twinges of sorrow to the hearts of many who never again may know the unburdened frivolities of teen-age life and laughter. A Confronted with the challenge of a world undeniably in need of leaders, the students departed from Brackenridge with memories as undying as the spirit of the Old West, their hearts forever linked to the unforgettable ex- periences that accompanied a gloriously successful senior year. Preceding the official graduation exercises was the impressive May 25 Baccalaureate Service, a farewell bid to the departing students, who realize full well the obstacles ahead in a world of sharpened competition and con- tinually heightening standards. , Outstanding social events of the 1946-47 social calendar included the successful fall senior dance December 20 and the senior picnic held April l, when students were dismissed half a day early to celebrate the perennial affair. The dance, which was a formal gathering, netted about one hundred dollars. Come Over to Our House, a delightful skit by the same authors who collaborated on And Came the Spring, was capably presented March 21 at the school auditorium as the 1947 Senior Play. The class also performed the other customary functions of business and scholastic recognition. , Taking care to suffer none of the illusions which so frequently beset graduating students, the class of 1947 faces squarely and honestly the prob- lems of the future. The group knows full well that it can never repay the instructors and fellow students who have been so indispensable in the estab- lishment of a solid high school foundation. Whether to college, to an office, or to a machine shop, the students of '47 take their leave with sincere regret and ineradicable appreciation. May our coming lives be as honorable and fruitful as those of the many Brackenridge graduates of the past-and, we trust, of the future. eniafzfi In addition there are many private and nominational institutions o higher earni iikiikifriik
