During the lifetime of many Brackenridge students, the hope of world peace and friendship will either succeed or fail, You must find a way other than war to settle disputes between nations. The youth of America has followed the well blazed trail of human progress and today enjoys the contribu- tions of all nations. With your knowledge, your consciousness of a fine heritage to protect, and your democratic spirits, l feel that Brackenridge students will do their part in solving these y. 1. eau great problems of your day. '-se' Dear Seniors, In spite ot the frequent necessity in wartimes ot saying goodbye to dear friends, each new parting brings sorrow. Brackenridge will miss your presence and your intluence. In asking you not to forget me, I shaII quote some Iines which I have adapted trom a poem by W'aIter Adams: Remember me as one who tried To make your worId a bit more wideg As one who yearned to smooth the way And aid your progress day by day, Remember me as one who sought To give your wings-strong wings ot thought. Thought that will give you power to do The work in Iite God meant tor you. Wiala Mane P11 gr' 1.4 Do you really know what goes on in the attendance office? One can hardly know until he has worked in the office at least one full term. l believe all of the girls who work there will say they learn something new aloout it every day. The attendance office is not just a place where you go when you want to go home because student records of different kinds are kept here, including all absentees. When a student is discrepant from a class, Mrs. Foerster has one of the assistants make a call slip for this student and he is sent for the next day to give an account of his absence. Discrepant slips are collected each period of the day and then checked in the attendance office. Some students rnay consider this office unnecessary, but if they were to work here they would readily change their minds. fflafulan Quglcm Mai. fqna fluffn facbi-on Clerk Clerk 'W 1.0, wi x Q3 ' 46 ' A :W-All I Page I7 I EQ ,EE MISS LOUISE ALLEN English MRS. Benkendorfer serving as President. The objects are to promote the Welfare of youth in the home, school, church, and community and to bring into closer relation the home and school that parents and teachers may co-operate in the training of our youth. As members today We strive more than ever to translate the vision of our founders into active programs and to live up to the ideals of our founders. The War has added opportunities for service. The members assist in selling bonds and stamps at a local store, secure blood donors for the Red Cross and they have sent l5O music records to England for the entertainment of our boys in the service. A community garden club was sponsored to encourage the production of food. During the summer a canning class was conducted with a competent instruce tor thus enabling the gardeners to can their surplus produce. The success and growth of our P. T, A. is due to the untiring efforts of our members and to the co-operation of our principal, faculty, and student body. To these we are indeed grateful. fm. n. y. wmzfmwm, nm. , -. The senior class ol 1944 with its president, Torn McGee, started its active year at the beginning of the tall term ol 1943 with a successful drive for membership. The first senior dance of the year was the Senior Prom, a formal dance given in December, which proved to be one of the most successful dances of the year. With the arrival of spring came the long awaited Senior Picnic. This picnic Was all that anyone could desire. Thus the last year spent in dear old Brackenridge is rapidly drawing to a close. Three years ago we were eager to reach the end, but now We are sorry we cannot tarry a bit longer. mm, .cfm Seniafz. Ufficeu. . . 'lr ir V7 Standing. left to right:-'Mary Edith Gush. The new officers, under the guidance of their sponsors, Misses Nell Beasley and Cecile Lawrence, prepared to take their places on a stage set for action. ln February the Iuniors sponsored a very successful dance, The Sweetheart Prom, featuring Eddie Mergatroyd as Cupid. All luniors and their friends enjoyed dancing to the music of Bobby Geisler and his band. Towards April the cast began its plans for an annual Spring Picnic held at Koehler Park. The main social activities being over, the stage was reset for action along the business line. Not only does the Iunior Class work for its own welfare, but for the aid it might give to the Seniors, such as choosing ushers for graduation. A success- ful year having ended, the Iuniors are prepared for just as successful a Senior year. lffalulsn pfluqiaupl 'lr if anim 3 Back Row, leit to right:-Robert Kliefothy Burton Finney. Page 61 12.0.1 The importance of basic field regulations and modern War- fare tactics has been stressed by the War Department, now more than ever before. Discipline must be found in each unit no matter how small or large. With the War coming closer to the individual cadet, he takes more zest in learning. Something he learned, Whether it be in map reading, first aid, rifle marksmanship, com- bat drill, defense against chemical attack, or any other subjects on which a cadet's study is based, may some day save his life or the life of his buddy. The War Department took every step pos- sible in securing better literature in the forms of manuals, port- folios, and posters. It has also endeavored to secure better equip- ment. The aggregate strength of the present R.O.T.C. at Brack- enridge is far greater than previous years. Upon shedding the uniform of a R.O.T.C. cadet, the boys will don the Army, Navy, or Marine uniform and feel right at home. In place of the Wooden, model rifle, a big heavy rifle, capable of doing a lot of damage to the enemy, will be placed in his hands. With reports coming back from ex-graduates, there is little need to further prove the great part of the Brackenridge High School Regiment of the R.O.T.C. is playing in this great conflict. Cadet Lt. At the beginning of the year there was a large membership, but at mid-term the number was reduced to a total of fifty-seven cadets. Meetings were held each Thursday morning, at which time practice was had in precision drill. One of the newest organizations in Brackenridge High School is the junior W.A.C. Under the able leadership of its faculty sponsor, Miss Mary Louise Rector, and Cadet Colonel Sponsor Phyllis Hampton, the Iunior W.A.C. was organized on january 26, l943. After undergoing extensive training, drilling, calisthenics, instructions on Military discipline and courtesy, the W.A.C. made its first public appearance on Field Night, April 3, l943. The Iunior W.A.C. Drum and Bugle Corps also performed, under the leadership of Cap- tain Lucille Lopez. ln September the W.A.C. Regiment was increased to six Companies with a Drum and Bugle Corps. Colonel Eleanore Herrmann and her staff of officers have done an outstand- ing piece of work in the enlarged program that the organization has had this year. One of the outstanding performances of the fall term was the program given jointly with the R.O.T.C. for the Armistice Assembly and later at the P.T.A. Open House. The girls also participated in some of the drills at football games and in several parades. A Drill Team has been organized this year consisting of sixty girls and twenty-four officers. These girls have merited their places in this group through their ability to drill well and the organization may well be proud of the showing they have made at the Turkey Game, on various Army W.A.C. Recruiting Programs, and at Field Night. The Commissioned Officers in the Iunior W.A.C.'s are ably assisted by an enthusiastic group of non-commissioned officers who have formulated a Non-Com Club with Ser- geant Ruby Kelley as the President. This group meets weekly and has done much to stimulate interest in the organization. One of the chief projects of the group has been to publish l'The Cadence, a newspaper containing news pertinent to the Iunior W.A.C. Regiment, twice each month. The Editor of The Cadence, Sergeant Ernestine Iastrow, and her staff are to be congratulated for their splendid work. The Drum G Bugle Corps which was first organized by Mr. Otto Zoeller has done a great deal to make the program of the W.A.C. a successful one. With Mr. Vernon Mayfield as their faculty sponsor and under the leadership of their Drum Major Captain Martha Stanaland and her officers, the Corps has provided appropriate music for the Regiment on all occasions. During these many years the annual has grown from a small album to a book oi great proportions, and it has won the highest honors awarded to a high school yearbook. La Retama endeavors to give you a complete history ot each year, and it serves as your only real tie with Brackenridge when your school days are over. The staff ot the l944 La Retama, although handicapped by changes ot members and sponsors, has worked hard in compiling and producing this book, but our social side has not been entirely omitted. ln lanuary the annual-salesman banquet was held at the Spanish Village at which time La Nelle Lay was announced as the winning ad salesman. In May, when all copy was sent to press, we celebrated our relieved spirits with a picnic and announcement ot a new statt. Brackenridge commercial students are resolved to reach the peak of per- fection in this line of work, and in order to measure their achievements, the Commercial Honor Society was organized in Brackenridge in the Spring of l939. Students superior in shorthand, bookkeeping, typing, and other commercial subjects are qualified for member- ship provided they have attained four credits in the commercial field, have made at least three As in two different commercial fields, and are approved by a board of commercial teachers with Miss Lora Goodwin as its head. Certificates of membership and proficiency are awarded to members. The thirty-four stars that were added to the list this year will carry out one of the original purposes of the club - that of keeping in touch with its members after their de- parture into the business world. ln this way, they can impart a great deal of Valuable information to future commercial classes that will be of practical benefit to each member. -Mary Edith Crash Top How: - Acquart, Arnold, Benke, lj. Brackenridge Chapter number l26 ot the National Honor Society had its inceptior through the influence ot Principal Marshall Iohnston in l924. From eight charter mem- bers it has grown to a maximum membership ot Ql. Over twelve hundred members have been inducted into the chapter. Originated and directed by the National Asso- ciation ot Secondary School Principals, the great National Honor Society has been intro- duced into all the leading high schools in the United States and her outlying possessions There are now over 3,000 chapters. The society unifies the method of rewarding meri' and furnishes a universal means ot detecting outstanding students when they enter higher institutions ot learning. The wearers ot the Honor Society emblem, which is non-transfer able, find ready entree to higher creative fields. IV Jlanaa. . . The candidates for the National Honor Society are elected by the faculty and must quality in scholarship, character, leadership in school affairs, and constructive service rendered the school. One-third of the senior class is eligible in scholarship, but only 1570 of the class can be elected. Thus, service, character, and leadership are determining factors in membership. The National Honor Society presents each member a neat identi- fication card, and the school presents the member with a handsome certificate. Candi- dates are initiated each year at an elaborate and beautifully costumed ceremony. The local chapter functions only as an honorary group since its members have a maximum of club and class honors. Mrs. B. L. D. The members of the Girls' Science Club may well say that they belong to a club with a future. Science has made great strides because of the war and will play an even greater part in postwar activities. The club, in keeping up with scientific developments, feels as-- sured that its members will be able to make worthwhile contributions to the world of tomorrow. Our club is one of the youngest in Brackenridge, having been organized in the spring of 1943. It is sponsored by Miss Lydia Pagel of the Science Department. Under her leader- ship and guidance, the year's work has been both interesting and enjoyable. At our meet- ings members take turns in discussing questions of interest. A point system with awards has been worked out to encourage active participation by each member and has resulted in worthwhile contributions. Occasional social hours are enjoyed which afford variety and relaxation. The Christ- mas and Valentine parties will long be remembered. In spring, outstanding events were bowling parties and field expeditions to study plant and animal life. The year was brought to a happy close by a picnic and final field day at Brackenridge Park. Brightening the Christmas Holidays was a gay Dutch Social at the home of the pres- ident, the memory of which will linger always. On February 25th something new was started by the Dianas, a dance in the cafeteria called The Dianacacho Room. Due tc various shortages we were unable to have our annual Crphans Christmas party, but we did send attractive boxes to two boys overseas who otherwise would not have receivec gifts. Our most successful social of the year was the Waistline Party at the home o Frances Ullrich, our corresponding secretary. It was given December llg thus a Christmas theme was carried out. The fireplace was decked with pine cones and lovely pine branches donated by Billie Du Bose, a new member. A grand time was had by all. A tea was given at the home of Rose Offer to initiate and welcome the new members With the help of the new Stevensons, we shall make the coming year as successful as the one just concluded. A that time it was called the Library Club but later acquired the name of Wa Kapa, Wi Kapa, in the lndian language, means friendship. This year has found the Wa Kapas fol lowing the ideals of friendship under the guidance of Miss Louise Allen. This past fall the Wa Kapas began the season with the election of officers. The initio tion of new members was held in November at the home of Charlene Cheetham. Decem bor, with its Christmas spirit filling the air, found the Wa Kapas decorating the lovel' Christmas tree in the center hall. The Vlfa Kapas have the privilege of decorating th- Christmas tree each year. Gaiety and laughter always fill the hall on these occasions After the Christmas holidays, the club settled down to other things- a calendar witf picnics and parties. The Wa Kapa, together with being called the friendship club, should be called, Th Promotion for the Consumption of Food Club. The reason for this is that the treasur ffl . . . Wa Kafpca Glu! wax em... doesn't have a chance against the Wa Kapas' appetite. As Miss Allen laughingly says, and we hardily agree, Every time we get some money, We plan a party and eat up the treasury. The first dance of the year, which was held on Ianuary l4th, was given by the Wa Kapas. It was called the WPA, dance, or Women Pay All Dance. Soda pop, candy, and cake were sold, and the dance was a big success. On February 9th, the new officers for the spring term were installed. The l4th of February found the cafeteria in an uproar of laughter, the occasion being the Rush Tea for prospective members. Upset the Fruit- basket was enjoyed by everyone and especially Mr. Gary, who was our guest together with Miss Moore. We have a full calendar for this spring. Scheduled are a skating party, a picnic, formal initiation garden party, and a farewell party for the seniors, We believe this cal- endar Will round out the year, leaving happy memories of good times for all. The Garden Club was organized to give its members practical experience in floral culture, arrangements and appreciation, but at the same time it was established to pro- vide tun and good times throughout the year for its members and other Brackenridge students. This year the Garden Club was particularly active in beautilying the Brackenridge campus by the planting of two dozen rose bushes. Then, too, the Garden Club has as guest speaker Mr. Cobb who took the members on a field trip. The club was unable to do much during the tall term as our former sponsor was not with us. But thanks to Mrs. Barron and Mrs Conway the Garden Club is again going forward. The Garden Club will sponsor a Victory Garden again this year. Last year this pro- ject inspired many Brackenridge students to follow suit in growing food and plants to insure victory. FALL TERM MELANIE CHAVANA . . VONCILLE TRULL . . . BETTY VINCENT . . . Among these activities are the four main socials: the Halloween Breakfast, the Christmas party, the Spring picnic, and the Senior banquet. Guest speakers and members talk to the girls on charm semi-monthly. The girls look forward to the Senior Banquet because that is where they have a chance to meet with old members. The Brackenridge Debating Society, better known to Brackenridge as the B.D.S., was established nineteen years ago for the purpose of furthering literary and speech events in Brackenridge. It has consistently lent its efforts to the advancement of these subjects with particular emphasis on debate. A part of our club, which will be remembered by all that partake, is the B.D.S. initiation. Each year the new members are rounded up and put through our gentle form ot instilling into their minds the importance and the sacredness ot the step they are about to take. This year initiation was carried on throughout the day, ending in a feast fit for a king. ' The B.D.S. is not only outstanding tor its forensic achievements but for its social supremacy as Well. The B.D.S. opened its social season by giving the B.D.S. Promenade. There have been many parties which have been enjoyed by all in the club. Sponsor Doris Post Dorothy Schaefer Marguerite Williams Pmplej Page 143 Pwbple That flash of pep-that busy, happy student dressed in the beloved purple and white is a Purple lacket-the very name meaning the personification of school spirit. The two-fold purpose of the organization is to serve the school and to cheer our teams in the athletic field on to victory. The club under the able leadership of prexy, Anne Hug- man, and sponsored by Mrs. Eulamaye Lord, has enjoyed not only a great measure of success in living up to previous standards, but a new thrill in inaugurating new activities. The year 1943-44 has seen the P. I. in every task from aiding teachers in registration to taking part in a famous dramatic production-besides odd jobs like selling war bonds and taking up collection at the Easter Service. The greatest feat the organization must perform every season is to plan and complete drills for the football games. Will any Purple Iacket ever forget getting up before the sun on cold winter days to drill at Eagle Field or at school? The P.l.'s had tired muscles, sore feet, and straggly hair, but on the night of performance, each P.l. knew that all the effort put forth was worth the glorious feeling of pride and the tingling sensation up and down our spines as we left the field after a perfect execution of the drill. Certainly, every game meant the thrill of cheering for our boys on the field. This season unusual drills were performed with the close cooperation of the band and B.O.T.C. Knowing that all work and no play makes Betty Brackenridge a dull girl, we have had our fun at the P.l.'s socials. This year the P.l.'s had their usual Sing Song, Boundup, Xmas Party and Picnic. ln a class by itself is mentioned the gala Banquet and Dance conducted in the ballroom of the Plaza Hotel to close the year's activities. Unexpected pleasures were the Banquet in honor of the football boys in late April and the Weekly Pl. Prattle -full of gossip about the P.l.'s and including a personality of the week. Whether each Pl, carefully lays her uniform away in mothballs or sees it revived on a younger Pl. sister, the purple and white will always be the key to the treasure chest of memory gems - each gem representing some priceless experience dear to the heart of the P.l.'s. The most beautiful memory is that of singing our school song - and in the words of our favorite song, each graduating PI. joins together in saying- We will go, but we know-That a pleasant memory will be always within our hearts of the days that we Spent with thee-H Bette Ruth Williams, Reporter.
