To this end we have recorded those activities in which members of the class have participated and which are, therefore, of keenest interest to the class as a whole. If in this we have succeeded, we feel well repaid for our efforts. -THE. STAFF LARETAMA 1924 LA RETAMA 1924 Brackenridge of Happy Memories In the short period of seven years since Brackenridge Higli School was built, it has become one of the finest high schools in Texas, a contender for every literary and athletic honor in the State. Its graduates go to colleges and universities throughout the country, carrying with them the spirit that has made Brackenridge what it is today. To know the Brackenridge spirit one must attend one of the assemblies which are called in the Auditorium of the school, by the principal, at almost any hour of the day. Sometimes they are called for pep rallies before a game with the friendly enemy. Main Avenue; sometimes to hear some worthwhile speaker; sometimes to greet returned heroes who fought for Brackenridge; and sometimes to attend literary contests. But no matter what the occasion, these assemblies always show the spirit and loyalty which spells Brackenridge. Interwoven in the spirit of the school is the club spirit. More like college fraternity spirit than high school club spirit, this motivating force molds the character of the school and of the student. Literary, athletic, scientific, mathematical, and social clubs all vie with each other for honors. rIhe Times Office, where five years ago was lorn the paper which won the state cup in 1923, unpretentious, grave as a sphinx, gives no outward sign of the discussions, gossip, games, stunts, intrigues, plots and love affairs that go on behind its closed doors. Here the celebrities of the school come to meet other celebrities. Here the “Times” reporters come to get the latest news. Hither the advisory representatives rush to get and distribute the “Times” every Tuesday at twelve o’clock. Another famous spot is the Recreation Room. Originally designed and decorated for student gatherings, it has come to be the scene of many a lunch-hour rush. Dances, parties, interclub celebrations, and teachers’ teas have gone to make up the interesting history of this room that will ever hold many pleasant memories for those who leave. The famed smoke-stack of Brackenridge records the history of the school in a most unique way. In 1918 the February graduating class suddenly conceived the notion of leaving their name where it could be seen for the years to come. Accordingly, there appeared, one morning, the crudely painted sign “Feb. 18” near the base of the smoke-stack. The infuriated school authorities tried to hush the matter up and always took visitors around the other way to avoid comment on this defacement. This did not still the enthusiasm of the June class, which painted “June 18” just above the other sign. And so, from year to year, the classes have painted their insignia on the smoke-stack, each a little higher, each a little better and more artistic than the former, until today, the authorities, now reconciled, point out the stack with pride and explain to visitors how it pictures the evolution of Brackenridge High School from its birth, as an unproved proposition, to the present day. as one of the finest high schools in Texas. In The Mistake At the Manor, John Blackstone, as young Oliver Goldsmith, made himself exceedingly objectionable to his host, Edwin Moffett, and to his hostess, Amy Arno, whom he had mistaken for an inn-keeper and his wife. In the course of events, however, Goldsmith learned his mistake from the angry butler, Raymond Rock, who had more than he could stand of the young man’s high-handed behavior. The play ended with Goldsmith apologizing and refusing to allow the punishment of the groom, Edward Gellespie, who was responsible for the mistake. Charlotte Downey, as the groom’s Irish sweetheart, was a valuable addition to the play. x x John Kirby made an excellent little wizened ogre in The Dyspeptic Ogre, with an enormously big voice and a bad case of indigestion, caused, as he thought, from eating little girls. But Mary Eifler, as Frances, with the aid of her fairy grandmother saved seven pretty prospective dinners from being eaten; and the Irish cook, Rosalie Robinson, explained that she had never cooked a little girl for the ogre, or, indeed, anything but Irish stew. After this enlightening bit of information, everyone agreed with the witty jester, Louvina Revely, that the ogre had sufficient cause for indigestion. The last of the series was Passe. Nina Mae Mitchell played the part of Victoria King, emotional actress, who had just been told by her manager, Edwin Moffett, as Hugh Mason, that she had lost her power and was passe. Then, after a stormy scene with her worthless husband, Albert Herrman, Hyman Shaffer as their son, entered and finally managed to tell them that he had just killed Mason. Things then happened thick and fast. Victoria King faced the police inspector, Alfred Leal, and bluffed for time in which her son could make his getaway. As it turned out, he had not killed the man. The inspector assured the actress in no uncertain terms that she, who had been able to hold him by her acting, was far from passe. In this play, Janice Picker made a most Frenchy lady’s maid. ■Vv LARETAMA 1924 Golden Days by Sidney Toler and Marian Short CAST MARY ANNE SIMMONDS .....................................Mavis Scott Florence Newton RICHARD STANHOPE .......................................Edwin Moffett Alfred Leal Lloyd Henderson ........................................Luther Kibbe Raymond Rock Teddy Farnum ........Stanton Hollowell Dan Daggett William Barclay ..................................... Then Billy Barclay, to whom Mary Anne was once engaged, comes to invite Mary Anne to the dance at the hotel that night. The girls who are with him make fun of Mary Anne and he leaves without asking her. Mrs. Kirkland resents this treatment of her niece and plans to show them a thing or two. Act II Dick Stanhope, of New York’s 400, takes Mary Anne to the dance, where she is much in demand among the boys. Billy Barclay and others are surprised to find that she is Mrs. Kirkland’s niece and also to see that she came with Dickie Stanhope. Act III All of the boys but Billy are going to war, and Mrs. Kirkland gives them a farewell party. There Mary Anne and Dick purposely make Billy jealous, and he proposes to Mary Anne. However, she has decided that she doesn’t love him any more and refuses him. When the bugle blows, Dick leaves with the rest, resisting a desire to kiss Mary Anne before he goes. Act IV Mary Anne, who has been in France as a Salvation Army Lass, is coming home and her friends gather to welcome her. Mary Anne tells Aunty Kirk that she loves Dick but that he had written her a letter which showed that he didn’t love her. When coach Cannon took up his duties, he found that it was difficult to arrange a .schedule suited to the State directors’ desires, for after the strong University Shorthorns were defeated in the first game of the season by the score of 19 to 6, the teams in this district put up the plea of “a full schedule”. Brackenridge had to be content with playing mostly college and academy teams instead of high school squads. The two hardest fought games of the season were with Main Avenue, which ended in ties, causing a general mixup in the district and city titles. After being ruled out of the state running for not playing enough high schools, the team took on the State Academic champions. San Antonio Academy, and lost only after registering 13 points to Academy’s 16. The only other defeat of the season came from the hands of the San Marcos Academy, who emerged from the game victors by the close score of 7 to 6. Carver, Nickel, Dav’s. Basketball Winning every encounter, with the exception of one. decisively defeating our “ancient rivals” three times , and winning the city championship was the record made by one of the best basketball teams Brackenridge has produced, the squad of 1924. When our first three or four opponents, all reputedly strong teams, awakened to the fact that it w as really mortals without wings they had been playing, the whole state heard about the phenomenal team of the Southside High School in San Antonio. Many of the publications predicted that we had one of the best chances at the state title and were sure that we would be one of the last teams in the final rounds. But Old Man Jinx had not been reckoned with. After showing the teams around San Antonio what a really good team is, the boys caught a train headed toward the district meet, minus three of the best men in the state, Rodriquez. Carver, and Hill who were sick at the time. Nevertheless, the wildcats did a lot of clawing before letting the first and only defeat of the season be chalked against the Purple and White aggregation. It was the same old story with Main Avenue; the Brackenridge team found it easy to win the three games played, and consequently once more the loving cup was brought to the school. First row: Cannon (coach), Renfro. R. Hill. Rlkins, Rees (captain elect). Carver. Second row: Veltman. Whitney, J. Hill (captain), Furgeson. Boss. LA RETAMA 1924 Baseball The baseball team of 1924 went out for the State title, won the championship of Southwest Texas, and were in a position to win the Texas Interscolastic championship when it was officially announced that no state award could be given that year. Only one defeat marred the excellent record of the purple and white nine, that by the University Freshmen team. In all. the team played 20 games, but 15 were representative games on the regular schedule. Brackenridge did not enter the city league, but played the winner, St. Marys Academy, for the title, winning all three games played and consequently the city academic championship. In addition to winning the city title, Brackenridge defeated Main Avenue in two games, 8 to 2 and 16 to 7, for the high school championship. Scoring 135 runs in the 15 representative games to their opponents’ 66 with a percentage of .933, the team made a record equally as good as any college or high school team in the State of Texas. First row: Smith, Mcllheran, Hill. Cannon (coach.) Second row: Davis. Seffel, Howie. Fenner (captain elect), Lewis, Jordan. Third row: Renfro. Veltman. Whitney (captain) Rees, Sowell. Track If winning two city meets, placing second in a district meet, and fourth in an invitation meet composed of high schools from all over the state can be called a success, then the track team of 1924 of Brackenridge went through a successful year. Main Avenue was counting strongly on winning the annual meet between the two schools for the city championship, but Brackenridge was also casting affectionate glances toward the cup and defeated the Red and White school for the first time in two years. However, at the district meet, by unfortunately failing to place in the relay. Brackenridge dropped into second place when first place was within its grasp. In a meet with San Antonio Academy, the Purple and White cinder path artists had little trouble in defeating the Blue and White entry, while in an invitation meet of high schools at Houston, the school placed fourth. At the State Meet, Vic Urban, the best point-getter on the team, was first in the discus throw, this being the only place the school received. H. S., which stands for something unknown but not so Brains, Hardwork, and Study. When I arrive at thisly school I am defronted by Female with stern look. She infer me to Big Chief, Marshall Johnston, which hands me program. Program before said is not like Japanese play program but gives me send off to class. Mr. Johnston preforms me that I am Senior, thusly I have twenty eight (28) credentials. I also need not go to class till third (3) period. I meander down corridor, having muchly time to cast aside, and sudden hear much jaw. In-structives of this school are great predicted to Investigation Committee looks, so 1 enter this place of jaw. In here I finds' is Office of Most High Times. I gallops gracefully to seat while boys and girls do Mary Pick ford surprise look at me. I read in before talked about Times that “Senior Look” is most important, who I quickly wear. I tunes in on talk and hear much of girls’ squshes on boys. I have not yet learnt what squshes are, but its very comedy to one looking in on so called squshes. I puts on “dignified Senior look” and precedes in looking muchly dumb like a bunch of B. H. S. Seniors I have already been produced to. Pretty soonly I receives that some girl named Corinne Wilhite has completely vamped Theodore Weiss. I hears that muchly of the time he is so invapored in dreams to her that he does not even hear when you tell him he is muchly good looking. I trys to look much intellectual to make these persons think I know lot about these prominent Seniors. But these haughty Seniors pay to me no mind, but each one talk muchly to himself and seems to be enjoyment it a very much lot. Pretty soonly after sitting quite (they don’t allow gum here) I gets that Raymond Rock is always trying to act like a “bad, bold Sheik”, but he does not know how. Sophie Goolsby was in the room and she spoke up and said that it wasn’t so worse an imitation after all. All Honorable Seniors look at her and laugh very muchly and quote that she is in a permission to know. This Flapper (I think that is what they call girls over here) yells out that Edwin Moffett needn’t be so laughish because she could quote quite a few things on him after riding in back of him and Florence Newton one nite, not so much time ago. I tries to listen to all this conglomeration of jaw, but this is impossible so I listens in on just one bunch. Gladys Gill, who has been talking every since I got here, say that no Flapper has knocked out William Rosin yet. I don’t know what she meanly by this, I don’t think that the girls over here fight, but every one keeps talking about this knockout and that knockout. Ammurricans sure are people who do things, and say things funny. Thea Goldschimdt isr another on© that hangs out in the Times Office that talks muchly lot of the valuable time. She says, to any one in next block that wants to know, that it is no use trying to knockout William Rosin, because she tried for a whole month and that it jest can’t be accomplish. Just then door open with loud bang! and Florence Newton enter in with pale coutenance. She yellupsf that everybody in the play had better trickle down the corridors on the look in for Miss J. Dickey, and then dodge. Everybody yell what the matter is now? “Has someone put gasoline in her coffee again?” All Honorable Seniors laugh muchly and—then go on with their jaw. LARETAMA 1924 “O say, do you know the latest scandal, Louvina?” “NO, what is it, Amy?” She puts on gravedigger look like she is digging up terruble scandal and then imports these news:. “The dignified, serious, studious, Stuart Hoff has flopped for Frances Weatherly!” “My goodness, wonders never cease,” sigh like this come from all Flappers in the Office. Now, there is another word, flopped, I can’t make out what she meanly by flopped, I guess maybe he stump his toe when he look at her and flopped down in corridor. Right at thisly point, a studious looking scholar walk in. “Why hello, Paul, what are you mosing around in here for?” “I’m looking for a place to study, I going to have a test next period.” All Seniors laugh very muchly and Dan Daggett tell him that he had better meander down the hall, because this place of much jaw is no place to stop if you are pretending to study. Then this dignified Senior glare around and walk out like mad lion. I believe that he is the firstly person who even look like he would study on a bet. Florence Newton quote that Charles Overbay has learnt new dance step and is dying to try the first victim with it. All Senior girls look at their shoes and then shake heads sadly but no word is quoted because all Flappers is probable thinking about the lastly time that their shoes were much mint by some “Sheik” that thought he knew a new dance step. Everyone is sitting very lot quiet when suddenly the great lot of silence is shattered by big gong bell clanging. All grins leave the faces of Honorable Seniors and sighs and moans gather around the room and stick thickly on the ceiling. “O heck, I wisht I had studied my history!” This escape from dum looking boy who every body call Raymond Rock. All Honorable Seniors file out talking as much as ever. I don’t believe that anything will keep Ammurricans from talking! I must wobble down to English Eight (8), and am feeling muchly dumb after all this conglomeration of jaw. Hoping you are the same. Jijuhama.
