Forty years ago on December 10, 1917, Father Flanagan began the work which was eventually to result in the inter- nationally famous Boys Town . The statue pfctured here typifies Father FlGnagan's love and interest in boys. lt was presented to the Home shortly after h's death, a gift of the Variety Clubs ot America. The statue, work of the American sculptor, Eugene Kormendi, is made of Indianavlimlestone. The tomb of Father Flanagan in Dowd Me- morial Chapel is viewed by many thousands of visitors each year. cfmfin ' 'nn On December 10, 1957, Father Flanaganis Boys' Home completed the 40th year of its ex- istence. These -10 years have been dedicated to the service and welfare of homeless boys. Since December 10, 1917, when our Founder, the late, beloved Bisgr. Edward Flanagan, opened the doors to five homeless boys, more than 8,000 boys have been citizens of Boys Town. Deprived through no fault of their own of the benefits of a good home, it has been the only real home many of them ever knew. At Boys Town they found love and care and understanding. Patient teachers and counselors have sacrificed themselves so that these young men might be prepared for a useful life. Here they received opportunities for a good education, based upon the fundamental principle that unless we build upon solid religious training, we cannot accomplish much. A well-balanced program of academic and vocational education, of wholesome sport, of cultural activities and extra-curricular pursuits, has been designed to fashion boys into mature men who are prepared to take their rightful places in the community, a credit to themselves and to Boys Town. Brothers Donold, Deon, Gene ond Roy Albert of Wichito, Konsos, ore welcomed by Fother Weg- ner upon their orrivol ot Boys Town in July of 1957. The Class of 1958 is the 22nd to receive diplomas from the Boys Town High School. The members of this fine Senior class will soon join other thousands who have gone be- fore you. All of us at Boys Town are proud of what you already have accomplished. Your achievements in the classroom and in other fields of endeavor are but a promise of even greater accomplishments to come. The years ahead will prove the real worth of your train- ing at Boys Town, and I am certain that our pride will ever increase with the passing of time. My best wishes and those of all your deans, your teachers, your counselors, and all who have had a hand in your training are with you. May the best of good fortune go always with you, and may God keep His arm about you all the days of your lives. gigs Broad, overall policies of Father Flklllklgklllk Boys' Home are determined by an eight-member board of Trustees, with the Most Rev. Gerald T. Bergan, Archbishop of Omaha, as its President. Archbishop Berganis interest in Boys Town has gone far beyond his vital interest in the general education of youth. On many occasions he has visited Boys Town to keep in close touch with its program, and his visits are always occasions of pleasure for the young citizens of the Home. Serving on the Board with Archbishop Bergan are Msgr. Ieremiah C. Buckley, Vicar-General of the Archdiocese, Msgr. Nicholas H. Wegner, Di- rector of the Home, Mr. William Grodinsky, Mr. VV. Otto Swanson, Mrs. Paul Gallagher, Mrs. '7Ae Mad fleueae-nd Arthur F. Mullen, and Mr. Albert Andrew Mur- Gewld 7 gylgan Phy- Qqaclribifr-up of Umafna The day-to-day administration of the Home pa I-4 Ht Baud of 74W-deed rests in the capable hands of Father Wegner, as Director of Boys Town, and members of his staff, but members of the board of trustees are always available for help and counsel. 1441 6316! aiew af frame . . . fbecma Assisting Father Wegner with the supervision of the 900 citizens of Boys Town are six Deans, who are dir- ectly in charge of various sections of boys in the Home. ln addition to his position as Assistant Director of Boys Town, The Rev. Edmond C. Walsh is Director of the Welfare Department and Dean of Ryan Hall. The Rev. Roman C. Ulrich, Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of Omaha, is Dean of the Senior Section. The Rev. Francis P. Schmitt is Director of the Music Department, Dean of the Choir Section and Gregory Hall, and directs the famous Boys Town Concert Choir. The Rev. Omgoing Moyor Wayne Moski Cleffl Turns over The reins of city government To Jclmes Brody in Jonuory. ' ' nd, anal rqcfiaified .IX X- 1 fi The City Council poses for its formal portrait with Father VVegner. Seated from left to right around the council Table are Councilmen Robert Cross and jack Thurston, Mayor james Brady, Father NVegner, City Clerk Gerald Brady, and Councilmen James Cordon and Mike Trevino. Mayor Brady, the fifty-seventh Mayor of Boys Town, and his council hold office from Ianuary until graduation day on Iune 1. Seq-Qauefznmenl' A self-government system has been in opera- tion at Boys Town for many years. It is a Mayor- City Council form of govermnent. It helps give our citizens of Boys Town practice in governing and knowledge and respect for our democratic American system of government. A new mayor and city council are selected each six months on the following basis: From among the twenty-five cottages commissioners are selected five council- men. One of these five is elected by his fellow students in the high school section to the position of Mayor. The city clerk is appointed by the May- or and is usually the latterls campaign manager. Membership on the council is a high honor for it indicates fine ability, willingness to assume re- sponsibility, and the confidence and trust of fel- low students. Seniors VVayne Maski and James Brady ser- ved as Mayor during the two six-month terms of the current school year. Members of Mayor Mas- kils council, who served from July, 1957, to Jan- uary, 1958, were Robert Cross, Mike Trevino, James Brady and Iames Cordon. Clifford NVil- liams was city clerk. 7fze Made le lineal' Every Boys Town citizen is given ample op- portunity to participate in the music program. If he has the desire and ability to sing, he may join one of the three choirs. Experience in the Chantel and Repertoire choirs may qualify the boy for participation in the Concert Choir, which last Fall concertized from coast to coast. The boy who wants to play an instrument has limitless opportunities for both group and in- dividual study. Marching and Concert Bands operate on high school and grade school level and more than a third of Boys Townls young men play band instruments. A sizable group of boys study string instruments. Piano and organ are studied privately by several dozen boys, Whose daily practice periods culminate in an animal recital. Even the boys who do not perform any of these varied musical skills have the opportunity to participate as spectators when the music De- partment presents concerts by such famed artists as the Roger XVagner Chorale, the Little Singers of Paris, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, the University of Nebraska Symphony, the Santa Cecilia Choir of Rome and the world renowned Belgian organist, Flor Peeters. Scouting at Boys Town during the school year 1957-58 reached its highest and finest peak since its introduction here in 1942. Fine leadership is provided from ainong the staff nienibers of Father lflanagans Boys' Horne. The Boys Town Scouts and their leaders have taken a very active part in coun- cil and District activities. Many oi' our citizens have reached the top rank in Cubbing, Scouting and Exploring. The success of our prograin is due to Monsignor Vifegner and the wonderful cooperation of all concerned at the honie. Show 4016 Rama! summed Sfldfba- Sfzofzinq Zfp Well The 1957-58 school year brought with it a great deal of success for all the Boys Town ath- letic teams. The football team started the year off on the right foot by going undefeated through the usual tough eight game inter-sectional sched- ule. The footballers had only a 19-19 tie with North Catholic High School at Pittsburgh, Penn- sylvania, to mar an otherwise perfect season. At the start of the basketball season, the Boys Towners were the defending state champi- ons for the two previous seasons, and their sights were set on an unprecedented third straight state championship. As the season progressed, the Cowboys gave indications they might be able to capture the previously unattainable triple crown. At the end of the regular season, the score book showed a fine fifteen win and three loss record. The Cowboys then proceeded to win the North Omaha District Tournament, and earn a shot at the third state title. However, the bas- ketball team came to the end of line in the semi- finals of the class AA Nebraska state tournament, bowing to a fine Omaha Central team, 50-53. During the winter months, Boys Town athletes also competed in swimming and wrestl- ing. The swimming team brought back to the school the state championship trophy that it had won four times in previous years. The Cow- boy swimmers who completely outclassed the field in the state tourney were led by YVayne Tahara, a double winner, capturing the 400 yard and 200 yard freestyle championship, and Ted Pittman, the state champion in the 150 yard individual medley. The swimmers had a fine season record of ten wins and four losses. The Boys Town wrestling team completed a very successful season with a record of four- teen wins and two losses in dual meet competi- tion. Two membcrs of the team won state championships at the close of the season. Robert Akins won the 133 pound title, his second state championship, having won the 120 pound title as a Sophomore. The other title was won by James McGovern, who earned the 112 pound honor. Akins also earned his second championship in the tough Omaha North Invitational Tourney. As the spring months arrived the Cowboys Athletes busied themselves in one of the three sports available to them: baseball, tennis, and track. As this point the baseball team has played six games and has won three and lost three. The Cowboys play Omaha Holy Name late in May for the right to compete in the state baseball tournament. Z The track team has had one dual meet, de- feating Omaha North, and has won the Colum- bus Invitational Relays. The Cowboy runners also placed second in the strong field at the Dutch White Relays at Omaha Tech. The tennis team is in the midst of its most successful season since the start of the sport at Boys Town. Thus far the netmen have a five win- three loss season record. 4 7 5 I9 J. unkers, J.
