Now completing his ninth year as director of Father Flanagan's Boys, Home is the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Nicholas H. VVegncr. Upon the shoulders of Father Wegner fell the mantle of the Rt. Bev. Msgr. Edward Flanagan when the beloved founder of Boys Town died in Berlin, Germany, May 15, 1948, while on a youth welfare mission for the United States Government. A major problem facing Father W'egner immediately upon taking over his new duties was the completion of an extensive building program then under way. Designed to more than double the enrollment of the Home, in addition to the completion of the new buildings, it was Father WVegner,s responsibiliy to formu- late a program for the hundreds of new citizens who could now be accommodated. Father VVegner's administrative experience was invaluable in his new position. For nearly 20 years he had served as chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha, and since 1936 he had been director of St. James Orphanage in Omaha. During the period intervening between the . . death of Archbishop James Hugh Ryan and the installation of Archbishop Gerald T. Bergan, Father Wegner was Administrator of the Arch- diocese of Omaha. For many years he had served with Father Flanagan as an Archdiocesan Consultor, and the Boys Town founder often discussed the problems of Boys Town with the man who was destined to become his successor. The duties of his office keep Father Wfegner extremely busy. Not only does he bear the re- sponsibility of administering the Home, but the problems of Boys Town citizens are con- stantly with him. The door of his office is always open to boys who wish to discuss their problems with him, and he follows closely their activities in school, in music, in Scouting, in athletics, and in all their other extra-curricular pursuits. Father Wfegner is not only an able admini- strator, he is a good friend and confidant of all his boys, both those now presently citizens of the Home, and those who have gone out into the World as Men of Boys Town.
