Rea. MWA gdwczfuf 00. Zllmaqm Waumfea af Bcufd 7aau4 eww- gulf, 13, 1226 :bred-Mm, 15, 1942 L Now completing his ninth year as director of Father Flanagan's Boys, Home is the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Nicholas H. VVegncr. Upon the shoulders of Father Wegner fell the mantle of the Rt. Bev. Msgr. Edward Flanagan when the beloved founder of Boys Town died in Berlin, Germany, May 15, 1948, while on a youth welfare mission for the United States Government. A major problem facing Father W'egner immediately upon taking over his new duties was the completion of an extensive building program then under way. Designed to more than double the enrollment of the Home, in addition to the completion of the new buildings, it was Father WVegner,s responsibiliy to formu- late a program for the hundreds of new citizens who could now be accommodated. Father VVegner's administrative experience was invaluable in his new position. For nearly 20 years he had served as chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha, and since 1936 he had been director of St. James Orphanage in Omaha. During the period intervening between the . . death of Archbishop James Hugh Ryan and the installation of Archbishop Gerald T. Bergan, Father Wegner was Administrator of the Arch- diocese of Omaha. For many years he had served with Father Flanagan as an Archdiocesan Consultor, and the Boys Town founder often discussed the problems of Boys Town with the man who was destined to become his successor. The duties of his office keep Father Wfegner extremely busy. Not only does he bear the re- sponsibility of administering the Home, but the problems of Boys Town citizens are con- stantly with him. The door of his office is always open to boys who wish to discuss their problems with him, and he follows closely their activities in school, in music, in Scouting, in athletics, and in all their other extra-curricular pursuits. Father Wfegner is not only an able admini- strator, he is a good friend and confidant of all his boys, both those now presently citizens of the Home, and those who have gone out into the World as Men of Boys Town. The Boys Town school system is accre- dited hy the State of Nebraska, and the subjects taught are quite similar to those offered in schools anywhere in the country. However, in addition to the academic cur- riculum, there is an extensive program of voca- tional education which offers students training in useful trades. These trades include tailoring, shoe repairing, harhering, haking, wood work- ing and carpentry, printing, ceramics, auto mechanics, machine shop, heating and air con- ditioning, radio and electronics, vocational agriculture, and cooking and catering. Music and athletics also take a prominent part in the scheme of education. The aim of the Boys Town educational pro- gram is to develop the whole man, so that when a boy leaves the Home, he is prepared to take a p lf' useful place in the world, a credit to himself, to X his community, and to Boys Town. The self-government system at Boys Town, a Mayor-City Council form of government, is designed to give the citizens knowledge, respect and practice in our American ways of govern- ment. A part of life at Boys Town for many years, the system is a stage in the learning pro- cess of alert and responsible citizenship. From among the Twenty-five cottage commissioners are selected five councilmen. One of these five are elected by the citizenry to the position of Mayor. The Mayor usually appoints his cam- paign manager to the position of city clerk. Membership on the council is a high honor for it indicates high ability, willingness to assume responsibility, and the confidence and trust of the student body. Seniors Milton Iuan and Ro- nald Ford served as Mayor during the two six- month terms of the current year. The city council meets with Msgr. Nicholas H. Wegner, Direct- or of Boys Town: Seated around the council table 'from left to right are Councilmen Eugene Horan, Vernon Morgan, Ollie Fulmer, Father Wegner, Mayor Ronald Ford, City Clerk Fred Hall, and Councilman Pete Pintar. 'Tis said that music is the universal language of mankind, and every Boys Town citizen is given ample opportunity to speak that language. If he has the desire and ability to sing, he may join one of the three choirs. Experience in the chancel and repertoire choirs may qualify the boy for partic- ipation in the concert choir, which last fall con- certized throughout the Northeastern States, climaxing their tour with ten memorable days in Cuba. The choristers registered unanimous agre- ement that the long hours of rigorous rehearsal were a small price to pay for the exciting plane trip to Havana. The boy who Wants to play an instrument has limitless opportunities for both group and in- dividual study. Marching and concert bands operate on high school and grade school levels, and more than a third of Boys Townis young men zuicancfgouq' play hand instruments. A sizeable group of boys study stringed instruments, Working toward the establishment of a symphony orchestra. Piano and organ are studied privately by serveral dozen boys, whose daily practice periods culminate in reeitals Where the pianists pleasantly surprise their friends with technical progress. Less formal sessions in the cottages demonstrate that they can also play upopsv. Even the boys who do not perform any of these varied musical skills have the opportunity to participate as spectators when the department presents concerts by such famed artists as the Roger Wagner Chorale, the Little Singers of Paris, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, the Uni- versity of Nebraska Symphony, The Santa Cecilia Choir of Rome, and the world-renowned Belgian organist, Flor Peeters. The Cowboy foot- ball team opened the sports year in September with the first of a nine game schedule. During the season Coach Skip', Palrangls boys played in seven states before crowds totaling 57,649. Against some of the finest high school teams in the country, the footballers compiled the fine record of six wins, two losses and one tie. The second major sport in the school year, basketball, resulted in the second State Cham- pionship for the Boys Town basketball team. Starting the season with but one returning starter from last yearis championship team, and only four lettermen on the squad, the Cowboys progressed slowly. Suffering four of the seasons five losses in the first five games, the team gradually began to jell into a smooth, well-bal- anced ball club. In the remaining fifteen games, including the District and State Tournaments, the Boys Towners lost only one game. The Cow- boyis capped a fine season of twenty wins and but five losses, by sweeping past Creighton Prep and Omaha South in the District Tournament, and then handily defeating Benson and Grand Island for the state title. At the Season's close, Milton Iuan was named to the World Heraldfs All State Team. The All-Tournament team cho- sen at the end of the state tournament listed juan plus two other Cowboys, Jim Gordon and VVilburn Hollis. During the fall and winter months, Cow- boy athletes also competed on swimming and wrestling teams. The wrestling team had eight- een dual meets, winning eleven and losing seven. The wrestlers also entered the North High School Invitational Tournament, placing fourth. Mike Sterner won the 165 pound championship in this tourney. At the close of the season the Cowboy grapplers placed fourth in the four- teen team Nebraska State High School Tourney. The Boys Town swimmers had eleven dual meets, winning six while losing five, The Cow- boy swimmers also entered and won the Tech High School Invitational Meet, and at the sea- sons end they placed second in the state swim- ming meet. During the spring months Boys Towners competed in three other sports. At this writing, the Cowboy baseball team has played seven games, winning five and losing two. The ball team will play in the district tournament, in the middle of May, in an effort to again gain a berth in the state tournament. The Track team has an eight-meet schedule. To date the Cowboy runners have competed in 4 meets, winning 2 and placing second in the other two. The trackmen will run in the District Tournament at Omaha University in the near- future. The Tennis team coached by Mr. James O'Brien has a nine-match schedule, and has done a fine job in its earliest outings. Tennis is the youngest sport on the Boys Town program but the boys have shown great interest and fine progress. In four of the seven sports on the Boys Town program, reserve teams also compete. During this school year freshmen athletes also compe- ted with freshmen teams from other schools in football, basketball, wrestling, and track. The grade school at Boys Town also has a fine athletic program, and during the 1956-57 school year grade school teams have made fine records. Grade school boys compete on football, basketball, baseball, and swimming teams. Mr. john Scott coaches the three major sports and Mr. Neal Fennell works with the swimmers. The outstanding record of the grade school year was that of the basketball team. The young Cowboys won twenty-two games while losing none. An extensive intramural and interclass ath- letic program is carried out for the benefit of each and every citizen, especially for those who are not members of teams in interschool com- petition.
