I P 1 - '1 'sf' ranch- S rincqaa gre ericl' iegen agen Now I know! Now I know why I admire the teaching staff at Boys' Tech so much: every member lives a full life! The strain of a hard day's work is left at school, and a new day appears in a myriad of outside activities. These diversions not only rest the soul for teaching's strenuous duties but open up a world of experiences that make men grow. It is no wonder that we can find on our staff an authority on practically any subject, our world of interests is so profitably widespread. And who can profit better from an educator's extensive curiosity than a boy! Personally I can find no better recreation than an interval in the garden. The preparation, the sowing, the sprouting, the watchful care, the growth, the love, the faith, the hope-all lead to luxuriant maturity in the garden. During school hours my garden is Boys' Tech. Mr. and Mrs Frederick W. Ziegenhcgen enloy their garden, These verdant plants reflect fond core and a love of the soil. I4 ice rinciyoaf yameb jifzpafrl'cL The Artisan Staff is right. Pupil attitudes reflect teacher attitudes at Boys' Tech. The teachers I work with are parents, workers, home owners, gardeners, hobbyists. We therefore expect Tech graduates to be equally representative members of their community. Parents have the responsibility of building the foundation for future life in the home. Teachers accept an equal responsibility of building character, ambition, per- sonality, responsibilities, a sense of values, proper social relationships, culture. And men who can direct students in the use of their leisure time make excellent individual guides of youth. The garden occupies most of my spare time. With my family quite grown up, the flowers and vegetables compete with the grandchildren for my attention. How unlike physical growth is the development of the mind of a Tech boy! Mr, James L. Fitzpatrick and his daughter, Betty, clean gladiolus bulbs in preparation for winter storage, Betty is so interested in her dad's hobby that she wants to maior in farming and gar- dening subjects when she enrolls at the University of Wisconsin. Watters lupper leftl, Department Chairman, is shown in his home reading one of the many books in his library. His lawn keeps him physically trim, and driving offers good diversion. Pictured below him are Mr. J. L. Burgess and Mr. W. E. Belleau. Mr. Burgess interests his daughter, Patricia, in reading, which is his favorite hobby. Mr. Belleau is a motion picture pho- tographer of note and an author of several successful books. ln the upper right picture, James Woody, Robert Kinas, and Leonard Norcea read into a microphone for an analysis of their oral reading abil- ity as their voice comes back over the wire recorder. This is one of the many methods of scientific analysis used in our new reading course. The middle row of pictures shows Mr. J. R. White, Mr. B. F. Shumaker, Mr. J. J. Pezoldt, and Miss Mary O. Little. ln the bottom pictures are Mr. F. V. Prugger, Mrs. Hazel D. Connell, Miss Helen M. Tierney, and Mr. H. A. Ulrich. To Mr. White, travel is the zest of life, but he finds great pleasure in his garden of roses and mums. Mr. Shumaker favors long motor trips, fishing and swimming. Mr. Pezoldt loves his golf. Miss Little reads much. Mr. Prugger would like to be a chef at the Waldorf. Here he practices cooking at home. Mrs. Connell sits with her favorite dog, Laddie. Besides doing housework she takes movies and goes on long drives. Miss Tierney, our librarian, takes to reading naturally, but swimming and gardening occupy her spare time. Mr. Ulrich likes photography and cares for his lawn and garden. On this page, Roland Anderson and Donald Leverenz look for reference material in the library for their English classes. Mr. N. A. The picture at the upper right is that of Robert Schieffer and Ronald Zuba talking over the geometric figures in front of them. Their teachers bring them a world of outside experiences to prove math practical. ln the upper left is Mr. A. A. Sperling who not only puts math to good use in creating weaving designs but also con- structs looms and services them in a studio room in his home. His basement workshop would be the envy of any student of woodworking. To his left is Mr. E. Poppendieck caulking a window of the new home he built last summer. Little Thomas and Susan watch him work. They'll be hobbyists if not mathematicians when they grow up. ln the center row Mr. J. F. Witeck lleftl teaches his son, John, golf, although fishing and baseball are his minor sports, Mr. E. H. Ellis lcenterl has a home- made trailer for travel, camping, and hunting and fishing, Mr. O. P. Bubeck lrightl likes books, as we can see, and the great outdoors. Below are pictured Miss Abbie Sullivan, Mr. F. E. Nicolai, Mr. H. Zirbel, and Mr. C. Deblitz. Miss Sullivan is a bridge enthusiast and likes gardening. Mr. Nicolai, Department Chairman, has this fine library in his home for diversified reading. Mr. Zirbel coaches track and football but changes to golf, tennis, and swimming in summer. He and his wife admire the trophy presented to him by the football squad last semester. Mr. Deblitz coaches basketball and track, but the apple of his eye is Cathy Joy sitting on his lap. BELOW Below are shown Mr. A. H. Millies lUpperl watching television with his two sons, David and Bruce, Mr J. J. Van de Kamp whose wife and daughters, Rita and Phyllis, help him with the garden and lawn and find his bees most interesting, and Mr. L. H. Fuller whose daughters have grown enough for him to travel with his wife on bikes for picnicking, exercise, and diversion. Well, some say math is dull. A Mechanical Drawing proiect is illustrated at the upper right with John Koss, Franklin Rubanka, and Roger Heins working on the plate. To their left is a picture of James Mussa and Donald Gabrus admiring a modern house plan in Architectural Drafting. Mr. C. J. Rohde lupper leftl has renewed an old interest in square dancing. Mr. O. H. Braun transfers his drawing activities into his home as we see him at his drawing table in the next picture. He is also interested in tool designing. Below Mr. Rohde is Mr. C. H. Schubert who is interested enough in drawing to make it an outside activity. He also likes reading next to his fireplace where the photographer caught him. Next to him is Mr. V. J. Tatge talking over a fishing trip with his son, Charles. Charles is a Boys' Tech student. The photography supply shop catches the eye of Mr. H. E. Barthel whose other interests are electrical and carpenter work and collecting records. The upper picture next to him is that ot Mr. K. B. Oyer, Architectural Drafting Chairman, whose farming activities are well known at Tech. He will retire to the farm some day and begin his life anew. Below him is Mr. E. E. Olson, Mechanical Drawing Chairman, who takes his own movies. To his right is Mr. W. E. Stocum, a member of the City Hall D. P. W. Championship Golf Team. However, no sport misses his attention. The four pictures at the bottom are of Mr. N. W. Nelson, Mr. W. D. Wilson, Mr. R. Morrison, and Mr. W. H. Weber. Mr. Nelson plays our organ and the piano, but here he is shown painting a picture. Good, isn't it? Mr. Wilson loves his dog, we see, and engages in gardening. Mr. Morrison is re-doing his kitchen in the picture. He also does gardening, plays golf, and takes pictures. He is an ofticer in the Coast Guard Reserve. Mr. Weber is our teacher of photography mainly because he loves it. He is kept busier with his musical activities and building a summer home up north. E, Wutke lLower Lefti illustrates here some of his art metal work, but he takes colored movies too -some of his best in the Rockies. Mr. F. F. Kneisler lCenterl has a collection of house plants that are the envy ol all who see them. Mr. G. A. Mickelson, Department Chairman, travels lar and wide and takes movies and colored slides which his many friends enjoy. The teachers are men of exceptional knowledge and teaching ability, and they understand boys. Two of their students are depicted in a chemistry experiment in the upper right picture: Thomas Butts and Forrest McQuitty. The upper left picture is of Mr. F. Schriever on his way to the beach for a leisurely summer suntan. To his right, Mr. C. L. Strelitzer unpocks some new camera equipment for nature study and wildlife photography. Below Mr. Shriever is Mr. A. G. Zander keeping up with the news. All life is so interesting to him. Mr. J. W. Butts, in the next picture, sits by his unique fireplace alongside this beautiful Siamese cat. He has quite a garden of strawberries, fruits, and vegetables which he cans each year in tin cans. The middle row shows Mr. W. McCrory, Mr. H. A. Wolff, Mr, A. H. Gould, and Mr. R. D. Haney. Mr. McCrary, Department Chairman, likes to read historical novels and visit historical places. He also keeps up with the composition and uses of new drugs when he is not hiking for a little physical activity. Mr. Wolff is on his way to his new home which he is finishing in fine taste and good workmanship. His own garden supplies him with most of his food there, too. Mr. Gould is transplanting a tree next to his home, but you ought to see his orchard and raspberries out in the country! Mr. Haney has just returned from a hunting trip. The results are shown in the photograph. The Electric Department is pictured in the bottom row with a scene from the shop in the third picture. The teachers are Mr. M. E. Olson, Mr. J. K. Jacobson, and Mr. J. H. Lauerman. Mr. Olson is a hunter as we see in the picture. Mr. Jacobson is as interested in radio outside of school as he is at Tech. Mr. Lauerman snaps pictures wherever he sees a good subject. The best subiects are his grandchildren who are his pride and ioy. BELOW On this page, the Electric Department is continued. A closeup of work in the winding class is shown at the lower left. The students are Donald Brouillard, Clifford Porth, and Robert Podemski working at an armature rewinding job in Room 360. Mr. F. H, Krahn has a regular machine shop in his basement-and here he teaches electric shop! Mr. L. C. Janicki, Department Chairman, is developing a movie film in his darkroom. He also likes fishing and hunting. Trick photography could catch him some big ones, couldn't it? Mr. M, C, Mommsen sits at his TV set, as so many do these days for diversion, but he would just as soon be out fishing or playing golf. Mr. G. J. .Iautz is shown using a testing machine in his basement workshop. His Boy Scout work keeps him busy outside the home and his tent trailer goes on many a camping and fishing trip where he takes movies for the record, In the lower right picture Mr. A. M. Karweik watches the train go round and round while two grandchildren, Terry Michael and Kevin Charles O'Neill, follow it with anxious anticipation. Their camaraderie is transferred to their students so that there is great pride in belonging to that department. The three boys in the picture to the right are doing a boring iob on a lathe in Room 160. They are Thomas Ehaust, Ronald Hayes, and Fred Wacholz. Mr. E. W. Held, Department Chairman, lupperl teaches his son, Kenneth, merit badge work in electricity in the basement of his home. Mr. T. T. Thom, below him, likes nothing more than baseball as you can see by the book he is reading. The center row of pictures shows Mr. E. H. Bernitt, Mr. D. P. Steuck, Mr. G. Schweitzer, and Mr. K. Markworth. The B 8. E Railroad runs all around Mr. Bernitt's basement. The inev- itable cigar is sometimes lit. Mr. Steuck has a few acres to use this tractor on and his smile shows how much he likes farming. He also likes boating. Mr. Schweitzer has iust cleaned his gun preparatory to a weekend of hunting. Bowling occupies his winter months, and of course fishing goes with his hunting. Mr. Markworth is seen helping to decorate his church for the Christmas season. He also sings in the choir. Outside of that, he is an outdoors man fond of gardening, hunting, and fishing. Cabinet Shop men make up the bottom row of pictures. Mr. H. E. Luebs, Chairman of the Trade Cabi- net Making Department, travels and travels now that his children are grown. He speeds around the coun- try in airplanes and members of his family swear by one certain airline. Mrs. Luebs certainly does, don't you think? Mr. F. M. Bruckwick, Chairman of the Tech Cabinet Making Department, beautifies his home and yard at every turn. Here he is building a stone terrace near some flowers he has planted. He also likes fishing and bowling. Mr. E. C. Eggert is part owner of the B 8. E Railroad whose run is confined to Mr. Bernitt's basement. Any high school boy would be envious of such an interesting hobby. Mr. G. Goessner hardly began the school year when the armed forces called him. Here he is shown leaving the building to ioin Uncle Sam. LEFT On this page, Cabinet Making work is illus- trated in the picture to the left, Kenneth Gleason and Donald Gnader put finishing touches on a modernistic desk. The lower left picture shows Mr. E. Laatsch hammering art metal to the admiration of his youngsters, John, Gayle, and Neal. They all like camp' ing too. In the center picture is Mr. E. H Grosskopt who enjoys fly fishing up north and gardening at home. That casting rod itclics his fingers, Mr. E. P Pinkert, at the right, does woodworking and gardening at home but more of his attention is devoted to Patsy, Mitzy, Jimmy, Timmy, and Jackie. The upper right picture has Ellis Rahn and Donald Gutknecht assembling three inch copper stock in Room lOO. ln the center picture above, we see Mr. C. M. Hoffman polishing his car in preparation for a trip. Below him is Mr. W. W. Dusold, our amiable and capable assistant football coach, with his daughter, Deborah. He is our genial swimming coach who quite naturally takes to sailing and boat building besides the body building and boy building he does in his classes. Mr. J. T. Richardson, our very successful football coach, is pictured next with his two sons, Tom and Jack, who will have to go some in emulating their father. Besides athletics he likes bait and fly casting and puttering around the house. At the right, Mr. W. Muth, our triple championship gym team coach and Department Chairman, is hunting pheasants with his dog. ln summer, he relaxes fishing. Auto Shop teachers at the bottom of the page are Mr. E. Strowig, Mr. S. Hineline, Mr. H. Genske, and Mr. J. W. Rasmussen. Mr. Strowig, Head of the Trade Auto Shop, enioys fishing and working with his son, Robert, around the house. Mr. Hineline is a fisherman too when his yard or a neighbor's automobile doesn't demand his attention. Mr. Genske, Chairman of the Auto-Aero Department, has an acre of garden in the country which gives him little time for his boating and travel. In winter, he confines himself in his workshop. Band I boys dream of joining it. Cadet Band members exult in nearing it. And why not? The public admires it and cheers it at the games and concerts. Last year the band accompanied General MacArthur into Milwaukee. ln the fall it rallied the stands at the football games and colored the field at the halves. At assemblies it peps up the students. Every year it attracts crowds to the Evening of Stars. Then it features the Annual Concert under the direction of the incom- parable J. Thomas Oakes. And the Cadet Band has a taste of acclamation in opening the Annual Spring Concert. And who is responsible for the bands' successes and the members' future achievements? He is one grand expert guide of young men-Mr. J. Thomas Oakes. This is the team that came so very near to winning the city championship. If it had not fumbled a game into West's lap, Tech would have won its first championship. Here, in the North game, Oscar Martinez is brought down after a long gain, with Ronald Labinski, James Bauer, and Steve Vitas coming up to help. Tech won 53-O with Nick Kirchen counting two touch- downs and tive conversions and Dennis Riley running 67 yards for one score. At the right, Jack Pittser and two Juneau players are smiling as the former runs 37 yards for a touchdown on a punt return. Martinez previously had scored on a 58 yard run and Riley had gone 65 yards on a returned punt. The score was 117-6. Tech played to the hilt in every game. No team in town was more spirited. Even in the West game they almost overcame their ill-luck by power and speed and clever- ness, but the roof caved in at every effort. The team's love of the game was evidenced in the way they came back after the West loss. They started a new streak, and no one could catch them. Old Alumni who have come back to watch Tech play year after year are of the opinion that this was the best team in Tech history. And every oppo- nent in the city seems to feel the same way. The boys took to the teaching of their coaches like a duck to water, Their response to coaching is illustrated in the pictures below. At the left, Daniel Olden- burg, lMilwaukee Journal Photol, back to punt on the North 45 yard line, fumbled, then picked up the ball and eluded several tacklers on his way to the goal. Tech won this one, 53-O. The second picture lMilwaukee Journal Photol shows the players carrying Coach Richardson oft the field after their victory over Pulaski, l9-O. Pulaski had won l7 straight in the city conference before that game. No. 59 is Dennis Riley who scored one of the three touchdowns. Oscar Martinez, at the left, tMilwaukee Journal Photol is exhibiting the running style that made him one of the most explosive runners in the city and a mighty high scorer. He also won a berth on the Players' All-City Second Team-as did James Bauer. Dennis Riley ibelow Martinezl is showing the running technique that made him high scorer in the City Conference. In the picture below are Tech representatives on the All-City Team: Ronald Labinski, Gregory Dufek, James Purdy, and Dennis Riley. The latter was the only unanimous choice on both the players' and coaches' teams. On the All-State Associated Press Team, Purdy was an end and Riley a back on the second team, Dutek was a tackle on the third team, and Labinski received honorable mention at center. ff! E v l 5. 90 aff ja, CAJ 0I .5 The track season of 1951 was one of preparation for a better year in 1952. The record therefore was rather mediocre. We defeated Juneau in a dual meet and came in second in the South Side Championship Meet. We were fourth in the South Relays and third in the State Sectional. There were a few good stars but the all round balance was missing. Coach H. Zirbel was building for the future, and now that policy is paying off. The top left picture shows how Ronald Drzewiecki puts on the pressure to break the tape in the State Sec- tional. Upper right shows three of Tech's sprinters ready for a tryout: Thomas Spenner, Robert Gregory, and Ralph Stenke. Except for the late season slump of three ames th d h d g , e recor s owe wins in all conference games and a high fourth place in the final standings. Our team learned well from the coaches and exhibited the high morale that keeps spirits up despite sieges of ill luck. Highlights of the regular season were the final victory against favored King, victories over two of the three champions, the placing of Daniel Oldenburg as guard on the All-City team and his second place in season scoring with 194 points, and our opening victory in the Racine tournament 50-49. And Tech did beat Bay View which beat Pulaski Ed Blair broke his own school backstroke record of l:O7.8 when he tied the city record in l:O6.6 He also broke his lndividual Medley record of 35.8 in 35.7. Witeck, at the left in the upper center picture, practically lives at Grant Park and brings a world of know-how to our Golf Club. He and Mr. E. W. MW 0 CNOHOI' BELOW The highlight of the exciting spring season of T957 was the Boys' Tech participation in the honoring of the venerable General Douglas MacArthur by the City of Milwaukee and Marquette University. The band is shown marching up South Sixteenth Street in the MacArthur parade. The great general rides down The Avenue to the accompaniment of good wishes mingled with thanks. He walks to the speaker's platform on the now hallowed field at Marquette Stadium. He sits with President Edward J. O'Donnell, SJ. of Marquette University. His wife and his son, Arthur, also feel the pleasing admiration of their loved one. Then the beloved general receives an honorary degree before the great of our state. All this was seen and heard by the student body in the Boys' Tech Auditorium. The picture was blown up for our screen from a large television set which the stage crew set up backstage. While the program was presented for the parents inside the Auditorium, faculty members lupper leftl, on duty at the doors, prepared to return to their rooms to meet their pupils' fathers and mothers. To their right is Mr. W. R. Rudesill talking to David Gaulke and his mother. The car chassis was on exhibition that night. The Christmas play is depicted in the scene of the ghost and Scrooge. Something new and different was presented to the followers of this regular event in the form of a Good Neighbor Fiesta. Ziegenhagen posed for the photographer, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Fitzpatrick admire each other as of yore, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Dusold dance the not-too-light fantastic, and Mr. H. Many graduates gave their blood as a parting donation before leaving Tech. Gerald Yahn received a snack from a Red Cross nurse after the experience.
