As a supplement to regular first aid, there are four hours devoted to civil defense which deals with the first aid for atom bomb explosions. bombing, and in- juries due to chemical warfare, etc, Among the numerous subjects taught are the proper method of applying the prone pressure type of artificial A...-,-M 1 I respiration and the treatment for flash burns and fractures, and special em- phasis on the treatment of shock. Also first aid is taught to the faculty bv Mr, Scherr and Mr, .lautz who delve more fully into the course in civilian defense besides the regular first aid. Seeing the importance and necessity of knowing first aid, one can readily agree that first aid could become one of the requirements for graduation from a high school, ty ffflljllfdf nfpzrtztzfnz c f M1 os! T1-ell Annex Freslnnvn No vacancy wus the familiar quotation given to those boys who wanted to come to Tech hut who found there vvz1sn't any room. Until 21 higger school can he huilt or the present one remodeled, 21 part of the prohlem has heen solved hy sending these freshmen to the Wintllzike Annex. This gives more room to the students at Tech and makes good use of the beautiful huilding over on Windlzike Avenue. 65 New and Different 41'- , Q. Hail to a new group of Freshmen! Our prospects for the future areiiood with these fellows backing up our departing Seniors. As proof of their arnbi- tions, their efforts are exceptional in both class work and special activities around school. These boys received Excellent', marks on their report cards: Joseph Cholka and Robert Planovsek. This group received the next highest special merit, Very Good : james Dobson, Gordon Elert, Donald Gereszewski, Donald Gutknecht, Franklin Matz, Dan Opremski, jack Schneider, Robert Schulz, Roy Wetzel, and Ronald Zuba. 66 Freshmen Mr. Ellis is the Freshman guidance advisor. The Freshmen have had many meetings during the semester to have Mr. Ellis acquaint them with the school and its courses and prospects for the future. New students are introduced to the school during an orientation program the first week after registration. lm- mediately thereafter, classes are assigned. and among them are two exploratory shop courses which help students select a shop for the last three years at Tech to prepare them for their life's work. The Guidance Department nicely directs these young men toward a successful career in school and subsequently a happy future beyond. 67. N an isc- N en v This up and coming group is considered by some of those who teach them to be of exceptionally good character. Their scholastic ability ranks higher than previous classes because they are learning that schooling is not only a matter of acquiring bool: learning, but a matter of effort and good conduct as well. Upon reaching their sophomore year, the majority of these boys have decided to finish their high school education. Very few will drop our after this year. Many of these students whom you see are also in other activities besides their regular school classes. Some of these students have made quite a name for themselves in these activities. For example, Oscar Martinez and joe Rebatzke are excellent athletic material. And several good musicians show up well in the band. Special Merits show the boys' scholastic ability. 68 .USWX Sophonlorvs 'Q twang? 2' ku. vi V 'ff ' . jaw llll -1155, Arg W: c Some of the better scholars are Donald Becker, Walter Strohl, George Wfalderon, Donald Wzxlker, james Dobson, Gordon Elert, and Franklin Matz. Wfilliam Johnson, chairman of the ring committee. suggested the class buy their rings early to help lower the expenses at graduation time. This was readily agreed to by the other members and as a result the juniors will have their rings in early September. After the junior class was organized. the 12B Seniors went to work in high gear. They elected as officers: president, Marv Schumacherg vice-president, Cecil Koehlerg and secretary-treasurer. Ken Gleason. Practice, practice, and more practice kept the team in tip top condition which is a necessity for the grueling grind that swimming demands. A few specimens show the form and condition that brought the Trojans into second place at the City Meet. In the picture at the upper left Edward Dillon. who graduated at midseason, strikes the pose of the active swim- ming manager that was familiar to all tankman. The two diving pictures of Gordon Wfojtowski and Richard Darling show the co-ordination that rated them tops in the city in diving. At the lower left, Ed Blair demonstrates the starting position he uses for his record breaking backstroke. Ed made a new backstroke time that broke a previous fourteen year record and also added to his credit a new record in the sixty yard medley. Splashing water and flailing arms might well describe the action picture of Orval Balfanz, Dave Bogens- child, and Ed Blair. 91 R wo Triumphant Tc-anus su Repmtlng the pcrformanccs thlt won txxo Ll'llI11l7lOI1Sl11P II'0Pl1lLS thc ur I Lvrous st tsc n thc gym tcam agun shoxxcd the Slxlll 1nd rbrlrty of Trojms ln .lthlntlts Entgrrng only one mm In thc Class A or scnlor CllV1SlOU pruwtul Tuh from vxmnmg m thxt LllNlblOI1 but rn thc Class B md C, LllXlSlOI'lS thc ILUNS prltd up 1 trunmdous number of points thtt no otha r ta 1111 ln thc mat could comp Llosa to Pl rung thrrtun man 1111082 tht llrst many IH tht 7 h not usa o Comb Muth ontdld hnn dld hrm lf sc m couhmg by vxhrpprnff up 1 t nn ol lI'L5l1I11il'lL0lNPC.IlfOI'S vshor mu th ouvh rn sham u h l 5 Irons rp sty L md h1vL promrscs ot brmgrng hoxnt 1 lux mort thtrnpronshrp wx trds GYM B TEABI fntr R014 Cntorgc Xlohr Rolcrt bthrlltr Drtlx Ddrlrn Cmcorgc Ronthgs Robert Xlurlgr Suomi' Roz: Ronald Bush Carl Bucher hath W Ninth Rlthdrd Ovuxslu Don Ch,1rl1Lr GYM C TE ANI lint R011 crime Launmlx Htcn bLl7I111LlI Ro lcrltlx lmhollc latlx lxatzor Rondll Nlerl Rolcrt lxneclxbusth SLgn11fR014 A t xxx onald Pivlils. They built up an entire new reper- toire of seventeen numbers well liked by boys, as well as doing the regular Christmas Carols. They took part in the following programs: Freshman Open House. Armistice Day. Evening of Stars, Freshman Orientation, Christmas Pro- gram. Spring Concert Promotion and the Spring Concert. For the Evening of Stars. they presented a minstrel act in which the boys showed their acting ability as well as their musical ability. Music letters were awarded to twenty boys this year for earning 1,1300 or more service points. The Glee Club is at- tempting to sing songs especially appealing to boys and welcomes any new candidates. I-11-I Rf ii--'larnes Schinschke. .lohn Horrlxren. Vlostph C,h-ilka. Fred Xlfolrer. Behind this exclamation lies a story of work accomplished by the united efforts of all the members of the staff. Their end product, to say the least, is commendable. Any Craftsman reader will vouch for this. As in any smooth running organization, each individual from the lowest to the high- est, must do his work. Work left undone by the lowliest cub will eventually have to be done by someone higher up the line. Students don't know much about the work that goes into The Craftsman, but they certainly know the product which comes out.
