S. had iusT been Thrown inTo The greaTesT and mosT disasTrous world conflicT known To man, when in February, l942, a 'Few hundred boys enTered Waverly annex, Thereby obTaining The disTinciTion of becoming The TirsT class To enTer Boys High School during The war. Paradoxically enough, iT was also To become The TirsT peace Time graduaTion group. Boys High had consTiTuTed a major parT of our lives since Those dark days iusT afTer Pearl Harbor, unTil January I946, when glorious peace reigned aT lasT, Throughouf a baTTered and Tired planeT. Four years have elapsed since The enTrance of This class: four of The mosT evenTful ever recorded, which saw The democ- racies rise up Trom Their deep canyons of despair, To The awakening of a new and brighTer world. For us, iT was a period oT evoluTion from elemenTary To advanced algebra, from bliThe spiriTs To The reservedness of maTuriTy, and from puppy love To knowing beTTer. BuT in reTrospecT, Ier us endeavor To recapTure The highlighTs of our life aT B. H. S. SPRING i942 Timidly we enTered upon our high school career. Mr. Tausk bade us welcome, inTro- duced us To Boys High and iTs TradiTions, and wished us success in all our underTakings. We were filled wiTh pride over our new Alma MaTer and looked forward To a mosT pleasanT, Though Temporary, sTay aT Waverly, under The guidance of Mr. Charles E. Hughes. inTo a smooThly running, efhcienf school war mobilizaTion we were ThursT, and parTicipaTed in salvage campaigns, book collecTions for serv- icemen, war bond and sTamp sales, and an ambulance fund. Even a commando course was added To The curriculum. ln The iniTial A. A. elecfions of our career, we saw Ben Skor elecTed presidenT, by The greaTesT margin of voTes in The hisTory of The school. The Red and Black celebrafed iTs TwenTieTh year of publicafion. DespiTe our inTensive war work, sporTs con- Ten Tinued as before, wiTh The baseball Team drop- ping only Three oT Their fourTeen games. BoTh The Tennis and Handball Teams garnered cham- pionships, while, for The firsT Time in Three years, The ElsTeinmen failed To win The Brook- lyn Track Championship. FALL I94-2 Hardly had we become used To educaTion in The annex Than, we were Transferred To The main building wiTh The closing of Waverly. Our second Term saw us become veTerans of The high school mode of life. No longer did we buy swimming pool TickeTs-we now FOUR In coniuncTion wiTh The war eTforT, The firsT Blood Donor Drive was underTaken. Dixie Walker spoke on blood pledges in The A. M. session rally, while we P.M.ers were addressed by Red Barber. Twenfy Tons of scrap meTal were gladly carried To school by The sTudenTs, wiTh The privilege of leaving Their TexT books aT home. In addiTion, iT was announced ThaT nine war courses were To be added To The curriculum, besides The already offered' pre- flighT subiecTs. sold Them! The Glee Club performed Twice in Carne- gie Hall before sell-ouT audiences, and re- ceived The New York criTics' applause. The MaTh Team, in an off Term, Took second place. HighIighTing a foofball season, in which we dropped only Two games, Manual was Thoroughly beaTen 58-O. ln soccer, we were runner up for The ciTy TiTle, while we Tied for firsT place in our baskeTball division. SPRING T943 AT long lasTl We were no longer lowly freshmen. We now were lowly sophomores! Many iunior high sTudenTs were added To The class's ranks. The B. H. S. Radio Quiz Team broughT home The CurrenT EvenTs Championship-sTill anoTher cup To our overflowing Trophy room.
