IAMES SWEENEY A Tribute to Tom Quinn There is, perhaps, not a single sentiment which the Class of 1953 can express in proffering thanks to Tom Quinn that has not already been well stated by the many grateful mem- bers of preceding classes, who have been likewise indebted to Tom. Nevertheless, we are pleased to have the opportunity to add our thanks to the ringing tributes of those who have gone before: for it can truthfully be said that our high school days have been made fuller and more pleasant by his presence in the school. He has been to us not only a shining example of the faith- ful performance of duty but a true and gracious friend as well. He will be fondly remembered by us all. ' W fx! E A , F .95 5 1 1 KW f ,. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF T953 NOTHER YEAR has rolled around and we find it our turn to bid fare- well to Central, and looking back we recall the many happy hours we spent in the halls of Old Central High. September 6, 1949, was the day of our arrival and we tumbled in rather timid but full of life. For the first few weeks we didn't exactly know what was going on, but we gradually adjusted ourselves to the Central way of life. Twenty-one of our members claimed places on the Honor Roll. Vile also had representatives in Football, Basketball, Dramatics, Band, Orchestra and Tumbling. Sophomore year started off with a bang. A few of our class-mates won admission to the Monogram Club. We gained a few more places on the Honor Roll and our participants in other activities grew in numbers. Our athletes won a few more laurels in the fields and on the courts. We took top honors in the Intramural Track Meet. We studied diligently, in true Central style, and prepared ourselves for our coming junior year. Second only to the Seniors, full of life and bubbling over with Central Spirit, we entered our junior year determined to uphold the traditions of Central High School. We were represented in Varsity and B Football, Varsity Basketball, Track, Key Club, Library Staff, Monogram Club, Band, Accordion Band, Or- chestra, Dramatics and Tumbling. We took a deeper interest in studies that year too, and prepared ourselves for the next year when we would be the up- perclassmen. ' Seniors, at last. We started the last lap of our high school career. We got off to a roaring start when our Football team captured the Class A Champion- ship, the peak of our high school days. More activities, more studies, more fun all add up to make happy memories for our Senior Year. College, work, war, we're not sure what the next few years will bring, but thanks to Central High School, we go out into the world well prepared to meet almost any trial. i953 CLASS PROP!-IECY One day I hapt to stumble On a book, looked strange to me So I dusted off the cover Just to see what it could be. I flipped through the shiny pages And thoughts came back to me Of the fun I'd had at Central With the class of '53. O'DONNELL OYS' CENTRAL students were happy on February 2nd to share in the . celebration of the Rev. Brother Charles A. O'Donnell which marked Brother O'Donnell's silver jubilee as a member of the Irish Christian Brothers. Mass was celebrated and an Irish program was given. Brother O'Donnell, native of County Fermanagh, Ireland, has been a faculty member of Boys' Central since the start of the 1952-53 scholastic term. How- ever, he has already acquired a wide circle of friends in Butte, and is highly re- garded by students and parents alike as an advisor, educator and friend. Brother O'Donnell, in addition to his duties as a teacher, vice principal and treasurer of the school, is moderator of the band and teaches Irish dancing. Brother O'Donnell received his college education at St. Michael's College, Enniskillen, Ireland, a Presentation Brothers institution. He started his early training for the Brotherhood at tl1e -Iuniorate, St. Joseph College, Baldoyle, Ireland, and completed his novitiate studies at Booterstown, Ireland. Later he continued his studies at St. Mary's College, Marino, Dublin. He began teach- ing at Scoilina Muire in Dublin, and later was transferred to St. Louis College, Victoria, B. C., where he taught for four years. He was stationed at Vancouver College, Vancouver, B. C., for four years and then taught at O'Dea High School, Seattle, Mfashington, for five years. He continued his studies during his teach- ing career, first at St. Mary College, Halifax, and then at Gonzaga University in Spokane. He is a graduate of Gonzaga. Brother O'Donnell has fostered Irish folk dancing in several schools where he taught, and his students won top honors in the British Columbia music festival seven out of I2 years while he was teaching in St. Louis College, British Columbia. He coached many basketball and soccer teams to the championship of Van- couver Island, and climaxed his success by winning the British Columbia High School soccer championship. U TUMBLING T IS an acknowledged fact that tumbling develops a high degree of muscular control and co-ordination. Much has also been said concern- ing the fact that tumbling strengthens the body. In short, it is generally con- ceded that the benefits to be derived from tumbling are multitudinous. Yet, the great satisfaction and tremendous exhiliaration which tumbling affords are often overlooked. Tumbling is often considered a somewhat dull and laborious chore. However, under the direction of Brother O'Hare, tumbling at Central has come to be recognized as a very rewarding activity. For Central tumblers an- nually perform their breathtaking and spectacular feats before thousands of awed spectators. They execute their intricate gymnastic exercises in cities through- out the entire state. They receive acclaim wherever they go. They have come to be a source of fame and renown to the school. The tumblers journeyed this past year to Sheridan, Anaconda, Philipsburg, X'Varm Springs, and Helena to perform. They gave exhibitions at the Pioneers' Club, the Round Table Basketball Tournament, and the A. C. M. Club, and they participated in the March of Dimes and XfVhittier Benefit shows. High- lighting their season was their appearance before eight thousand people the last night of the Class A State Championship Basketball Tournament. The Accordion Band, which provided the musical rhythm for the acrobatic achievements of the tumblers, is certainly deserving of thanks for the significant contribution it made to an activity which has proven to be truly worthwhile. O'DONNELL CONDUCTOR, MARTIN CESARE CENTRAL BAND NCE AGAIN the Butte Central Band thrilled the public with numerous spectacular performances. The major share of the credit for their success is due to Mr. Martin Cesare. His skill as a musician, unlimited patience and untiring efforts bore rich fruit. Sincere thanks is also due to Sister Cecilia Marie. -lean Briggs did a marvelous job as Band majorette. The excellent conduct, neat appearance and fine discipline of the Boys' organization was due largely to the efficient methods of the moderator, Brother O'Donnell. The Boys' Central Band was in demand for many engagements. Performances were given for St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day and at Central Dramatic Productions. Concert engage- ments were also given at the Elks, Daughters of Isabella, Galen and Warm Springs. BAND OFFICERS L. Hightower, P. Quinn, 1. Korn, I. Vogel ! F' LOOK SHAILZP , BROTHER I. C. FELLOWS, MODERATOR KEY CLUB 0YS' CENTRAL Key Club adopted the following objectives for the 1952- 53 school year. To develop initiative and leadership, to provide ex- perience in living and working together, to serve the school and the community, to cooperate with the school faculty, and to prepare for useful citizenship. Striving toward these ends, the Central Key Club has proved itself valuable to the school, the faculty and the community. Among the various projects which were sponsored by this worthy organiza- tion were: collection for the Red Cross and the March of Dimes, Dances and Mixers, extensive renovation of the St. Gabriel Shrine, assisting the Butte Kiwanis Club in various activities, initiating a new school emblem, and aiding in a drive for new lighting in the school. Central's Key Club has proved itself an honor to the School and it will continue to strive to lessen the burden of the faculty, serve the students of Central and fulfill their international motto, l'Ve Build . Within its walls Central thespians assumed their positions in the spotlight to win the plaudits of a capacity crowd with a vivid and artistic interpretation of The VVho1e Town's Talking , an uproarious three-act comedy. Interest was maintained throughout the development of the plot by a cast well-instruced in proper enunciation and gesticulation. Each individual so successfully portrayed his part as to create a realistic atmosphere and to render the production highly entertaining. This fine play was the result of diligent practice by the performers and superb directing and perfect casting by Brother J. C. Fellows. However, the obvious talents of the cast and director would have been insufficient to the execution of the myriad details which were in- volved in its production were it not for the contributions of Mrs. Dorothy Lombardi, make-up artist, Con Foley, prompter, Bill Finlen, stage manager, and Jim Driscoll, publicity man. Our gratitude is extended to all those who aided in any way in so gloriously upholding Central's tradition of fine plays. ,- XX N ON M wmmm Wm M xA qmfsce 49 H N NMA 4-YAG y ,AsCXxxs-.A wav, '.s.moq.Q xwgm 'xx Nw., wo Nu ook. -,Q oo 'NNY' LNNXON i'N':f xc aim 6,yu.g5v.etf x x 'A YXCS6 'N-'O 'NN X , NXNX -XXX XX XXV foxy xeioff SIYNQWACK xc 'f41.XX1+'x0k xo X xxx 'MA wax wo.. wx ,, . .,.. ., V54 QQ XVVXN N ow: 'wvwfm me mx ixqbv, mm Xx ff xx x Gxwv 3-.ix ,, ,,v,,...,,. A .J FE5 :ig CENTRAL ROUND TABLE QHE CENTRAL Round Table, patterned after the nationally-known Spokane Round 9 Table, is one of the most active organizations in Butte. Although its activities are centered around promotion of athletics, and other activities for Boys' Central High School, the Round Table has accomplished much in community-wide endeavors, it has brought several topflight sports attractions to Butte, having sponsored the appearance here of the Minne- apolis Lakers basketball team, The House of David and Harlem Clowns, two other fine traveling clubs. Round Table members give of their time, effort, and financial support to- ward the betterment of Central's athletic program. Many serve as ticket takers and sellers at Central athletic events. The annual Central Round Table Tournament is one of the featured basketball tournaments of the season. The tournament, held in the Civic Center the last season, promises to be even bigger as the years go by. The 1952 tourney was won by Helena high school with Central, Butte and Anaconda as other competing clubs. The same teams are enrolled for the 1953 classic in December. COACH, IIM SWEENEY FOOTBALL HE 1952 Butte Central football squad restored Centra1's prestige as a football power with a demonstration of determination and know-how such as to carry it to the Class A State Championship. The Maroons opened the season with a 9-7 triumph over Helena and went on to ,defeat Anaconda, Livingston, Bozeman, Sidney, and Glendive and to tie Havre, while losing to Kal- ispell, Missoula, and Butte. The victories over the favored Copperheads of Anaconda and Red Devils of Glendive were particularly commendable and were the highlights of a success- ful season. The T-formation offense adopted by Coach jim Sweeney in his initial season as Maroon mentor utilized the speed of the Central backs and functioned amazingly well behind the solid blocking afforded by the hard-charging Central line, but it was, perhaps, the devastating tackling evidenced in nearly every game which contributed most to the capturing of the championship crown. The spirit of self-sacrifice and team play manifested by the 1952 Maroons was enough, in itself, to make the team worthy of note. - Credit is due, of course, to Coach Sweeney and his capable assistants, -lack Coyne and Steve Kasung and sincere thanks is extended to all who lent of their time and effort in provid- ing that degree of wholehearted cooperation, aid, and encouragement which was so instru- mental in the achievement of the team's fine record. BRO. E. T. BEYER, Athletic Moderator fi The job of moderating any activity is tiring and requires much patience. This is especially true of moderating athletics. Brother E. T. Beyer is deserving of the highest praise for the marvelous job which he has done as Athletic Moderator. Through his untiring efforts and great interest in the welfare of the participants Brother Beyer has earned the friendship of both the students and athletes. Q5 FRANCIS X. BASKETBALL O ENTRAIQS BASKETBALL fortunes were again at a low ebb as the varsity plumbed to the depths of the Big l6 Conference throughout the l952-53 season and failed to qualify lor play in the state tournament. Lacking in height, and handicapped by an inability to shoot with con- sistent accuracy from beyond the key, Coach jim Sweeney's Maroons, neverthe- less, evidenced tremendous hustle, which, while it was not enough to win many games, served to make the season interesting. For, in employing a defense which was, at times, deplorably penetrable, the varsity cagers often stole the ball in spectacular maneuvers. Although the team was generally unimpressive in compiling a record of six wins and eighteen losses, it was not without a few players on a par with any in the state. The B squad, coached by Ed Dennehy, played a rugged style of ball throughout its fourteen game schedule and ended up with a record of four wins and ten losses. They lost several games which they could have won had their luck been better. Brother Hueller, moderator, is deserving ol thanks for the part he played in promoting the success of the team. A bright spot in what was otherwise a somewhat disappointing season was the play of a line Freshman team, which, after losing its first game, went on to win twelve straight. This team has height and balance. lt was characterized by tight defensive play and a strong of- fense. It possessed a wealth olf reserve strength. Commendation is certainly due to Brother Beyer for the manner in which he selected and coached the l952-53 Freshman basketball team. B TEAM Front Row-V. Petrino. Second Row-I. Harrington, E. Old Central was father tumble-down, but through the cracks of this ram- shackle school seeped a wonderful spirit. It was Central and that was all that mattered. N Y lfVe started out with that here we are spirit and chose our first class of- ficers: Carol Sohm, joan Powers, Hele'nV,'Cox and joan Panyon, to lead us through 49-50. ' L - As sophomores, we greeted some new faces and said good-bye to some old ones. Old Central was growing feebler but the sophs were up and coming. This year we elected Mary Lou lfValsh, joan Lynch, joan Porter, and Peggy Tyson to keep us upward bound. KfVe made our first bid for fame this year when Shelia Sullivan copped the Stamp Queen Crown for the sophs. Ah! the vivacious life of a junior. lVe packed our vim, vigor and vitality, and went aboard the G.H.S. UPPERCLASSMENU. We were juniors when we good-bye to the house on the hill and saw our dreams of a new school cofiiei true. Mary Sullivan and Helen Cox were chosen to be our leading ladies of thai cheering section. Mauna Loa was the theme for our junior dinner dance. Amid the swaying palms and South Sea splendor, class officers, Mar- garet Sullivan, Rose jones, Helen Goodland, Mary jo Freudenstein led the grand march. Through the years we'll remember certain classmates for special activities. Wle are' proud of our head majorette, Pat McDonald, and her senior twirlers, Aggie Connors, Mary jo Brancamp, Ree Connors, Sheila Sullivan, Ann Bolton, Lorraine Benny, Helen Shea, Rose jones, Donna Crowley, Mary jo Freuden- stein, Sharon Cooney and julie Sullivan. That may be true . . probably is . . but the trouble is wisdom is handed out to us in varying amountsg some may get a lot and others of us not so much. lt's like that in everything. We can't all be a Rhodes scholar or johnny Lujack. Some of us have to go to school somewhere else and some of us have to sit in the grandstand. But that doesn't mean we can't profit from a word to the wise, just like the others. And what is the word? lt's: Be honest. That means be honest with yourself as well as with the other fellow. There are many other words, too, that will help you, like save your money, go to college, don't smoke, chew, swear, drink or cross the street against the light. But for our money, being on the level is the best of all. EDUCATION IN THE EARLY-DAY MINING CAMPS Four years after the first school in the Montana territory was opened at Bannack and three years after the first regular public school was started in Virginia City, pioneer teachers in 1867 were providing their students with an education through what today is the eighth grade. However, any student who completed that training-through the eighth grade--was considered to have a high school education. Pupils starting in school were assigned to the eighth grade and graduated from the first grade-just the reverse of the present system. Upon graduation from the first grade, students Were required to take examinations to obtain a certificate. Tests were given in the home and the cost of the diploma was set at 86. All problems in the test had to be accurately answered before the applicant qualified for the certificate. Because early-day schools did not have a common text book of any kind, study in each varied. The commissioners of educaiton- that was the title of the superintendents-however, tried from the start to establish regular courses of study. It was not until 1881 that a uniform textbook law was placed on the statute books by the Legis- lature, and not until 1889 that a uniform course of study was made mandatory. A list of those who attended the early-day schools and who later became prominent in public life in Montana were Austin Gormley, Cascade attorney at one timeg Dr. LeRoy Southmaid of Great Fallsg Judge Lew L. Calloway, State Supreme Court, and Judge Lee Word, former associate justice of the high state court. ANACONDA CQPPER MINING CO. Work for a Greater and More Prosperous Montana. A The success of a yearbook depends largely upon those who have no direct contact with the students and are namely: the photographer, cover manufacturer, the engraver, the printer, and to a great extent, the adver X . .L Jtfisers. ' L' To these persons we extend our great appreciation: Mr. Martin Scan fion and Mr. E. J. Spellrnan of the STANDARD PUBLISHING COM Q.f3'RP NYQ to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rooth of the ROOTH PHOTOGRAPHIC UDIO3 to Mr. Owen Smithers of SMITHER'S STUDIOQ to Mr. Graff 3 and his staff ASHTON ENGRAVING COMPANY. Also to the S. K . SMITH COMPANY our cover manufacturers. If I were to decide who put the most time, energy, and patience into N the production of this book, the first bouquets would go to the faculty ' sponsor, Brother L. C. Uicker. Then to Art Editor, Tony Petraitis and his helpers, to Paul Quinn, the Literary Editor, and his staff, and to Jack 6 Q, P6593 N J Dornbos and jerry Sullivan, who were always the Johnnys-on-the-spot These students are due great appreciation for the fine job they did this ii YQ, I 'X' year. Gratitude is also due Brother D. C. Mahoney for whom this book 1, ,K was dedicated and the faculty. 4, ' BJ H, .4 V , In closing, final thanks go to you, the.
