BAND N HE ClEN'l'R.Xl, BAND. lortx members strong. proudly salutes Conductor Martin Cesare lor his untiring efforts with this year's group. Mr. Cesare. by great patience and hard labor, moulded his musicians into the best band Central has had in recent years. .Xt loolball and basketball games. the band was always on hand to cheer the squads to greater ellorts by their spirited playing of the school songs. At rallies and assemblies, the band formed the loundation for many enjoyable programs. During the course ol the current school rear. the band played to a capacity house at the Elks' Lodge and on March lb had to give two performances to at-eommodate the huge crowds at the A. C. M. Club. On these occasions the audiences were lavish in their praise of the conductor and the players for their splendid work. No account ol' the band would be Complete without a special word ol praise to the moderator. Brother Pilon. for the appearance. discipline. and excellent conduct ol' the band members at all times. Also. high commendation is due to loe llanaxan and to Bob Netterberg lor their line solo appearances. UlQ.lC.lI. Vll,VJX ,gk .M Q , i' ja - Q ffj, Z... L I 1 - W, X iw ' 2. if QV iz 7 . ' l I . However, in order that no discrepancies may arise in the future regarding our brilliant achieve- ments in every conceivable field, it is imperative that we should give a brief account of these accomplishments. XVe are, by nature. a rather modest group of handsome young men, and hence the reader must realize that those things mentioned below, are, of course, the barest essentials of the true facts. Although the football team suffered a great number of injuries, it never- theless acquitted itself nobly on the gridiron, due to the superb playing of co- captains Don Meglen and Joe Pelletier, Bob Burns, Marvin Shea, Frank Kinsella, Bill McDermott, lim Sullivan, Neil Morrissey, Don lVulf and Ioe Harris. , 1 . An always popular Central basketball team made for itself a very impressive record, which can be attributed to the skill and abilities of captain Bob Burns. lack Heffernan. and Ted Michaud, with a little help from the under-classmen, of course. The tumblers gave sparkling performances which thrilled audiences when- ever and wherever they gave exhibitions, and for this reason they were invited to perform in Missoula at the State Basketball Tournament. This is excellent proof of the ability and showmanship of -Ioe Canavan, Tom XValsh. Dee Mc- Gonigle, Bill McDer1nott, Jerry Martin, Anton -lovick and john Gilmore. Our endeavors were not confined to athletics alone. however, for these lads placed on the school honor roll for four consecutive years: John McCarthy, Bob Beaulieu, Bill Greytak. Joe Forbes, Pat Fleming, jack Heffernan, Anton Jovick, Joe Canavan, Ted Michaud. Charles Van .-Xlstine, Pat Lyons, John Gilmore, Bob Netterberg. Charles Bradley, Dee McGonigle. Don Meglen, Maurice Mulcahy and Bud Clinch. Dramatic Club members, who took part in either Boys' or Girls' Central play productions are: P. Powers, McCarthy, R. Beaulieu, D. McGonigle. A. Tremblay, R. Lahiff, XV. McDer1nott, R. Conklin, R. Davey, V. Cinch, Gil- more, K. Tierney. T. Michaucl, D. Kennedy, Quinn and F. Evans. ln the Tuberculosis Contest. Bob Beaulieu won first honors and Dee Mc- Gonigle copped third place. During junior year, Dee placed second in the Tuberculosis Contest and won first place in the Cancer Essay Contest. Bud Clinch garnered second place in the KBOXV Campus Quiz, while John McCarthy and Keith Tierney were among the twelve Stale finalists in the Pepsi- Cola Scholarship Test. Joe Canavan, who won a four-year Navy Scholarship, will spend the next six years serving Uncle Sam. The band, undoubtedly. has greatly benefited from the services of Charles Bradley, the president, R. Beaulieu, XV. Sullivan, P. Fleming, Canavan, T. lValsh, D. McGonigle, R, Netterberg, V. Clinch, F. Evans, Gilmore and F. Actis. The Glee Club will suffer greatly from the loss of chanteurs McCarthy, XV. Greytak, XV. Maloney, P. Hunt, .-X. Tremblay. C. Van .-Xlstine, XV. Rice, M. Powell, R. Mahoney, D. Kennedy. T. Michaud and A. Alovick. Those on the Maroon Stalf were: T. Michaud, M. Mulcahy, Quinn, R. Conklin. McCarthy, P. Lyons. XV. Rice, R. Davey, K. Tierney. Playing under a new coach, Frank Callen, former star of the Saint Blaryfs Gaels. who in his first year of coaching dicl a remarkable job, the Nlaroons. after losing three of their first four non-conlc-rence starts. came back strong to finish fourth in the Big 16. Among the accomplishments of the triumphant Maroon and White cagers were: the capturing of the Round Table Tournament for the second straight year. the winning of second place in the Divisional Tournament. and the garner- ing of fourth place honors in the State Tournament. The Nlaroons went un- defeated again this season. on the School ol Mines Court, and brought the record up to forty' straight wins at home. This achievement is all the more remark- able in view of the fact that Central has no gymnasium of its own. and the basketball team was restricted to approximately an hour and a hall ol practice each afternoon. Besides this, Central won the City Championship for the filth consecutive year. For the first time in history. Central lttcl Butte Hi twice. emerging victorious both times. On February' lT. they played at Butte High. defeating the Bulldogs 48-43. On March li. on the Nlines court. the Centralites rallied over Butte 37-35. .-Xt the State Tournament Central came yc-ry close lo winning the State champicmship for the first time, In the semi-final game the Nlaroons were nosed out by Anaconda by two points. .5tnac'oncla went on to become State Champs the next evening. Big yloe Devich. ti' 4 gangling sophomore center. carried off scoring honors for the season. Besides this, joe made lirst team .Xll State as well as the All Tournament Team. Following Devich in scoring was Captain Bob Burns. This blond headed senior was a standout forward. He was named second string All Tournament at the State meet and received honorable mention on the All State Team. The other forward spot was held down yery capably' by junior Bob Doran. Bobby. only' 5' a long shot artist. also recc-ived honorable mention for his play' in the State. Senior lack Heffernan. ace playmaker of the team. held clown one guard position. He made third string All State and honorable mention on the All Tournament Team. Guard Bob Hunt, junior defensive ace. received little publicity' but his loss t.o the team was keenly felt when he sprained his ankle and was unable to play in a couple of games. The talent of an especially prominent senior reserve. lied Nlichaud. went unrecognized for most of the basketball season. Ted. it seemed. played best during the final moments of the games in which Central was trailing and was responsible. to a large degree. for Central's wins over such formidable opponents as Anaconda, Helena. and Butte Hi. Besides the above mentioned players. Central was also giltecl with very capable and talented reserves who were outstanding all season. 'I'he team averaged 39 points per game as against our opponents 31. They won 21 games and lost 7. ltr the Heirs Clllss A Division ol the CI. Y. O, League. the squad annexed the lirst place trophy hi winning eleven games out ol twelve starts. This well-deserted victory is the more remarkable when one considers that. while the B squad is composed ol Sophomores and Freshmen. their opponents in the League were all older and more experienced players. But more important than the winning ol games was the tremendous spirit ol team play and the general Uheads up brand of hall that characterized everx game. XX'inning or losing. the squad never gate up hut was in there strapping until the linal huller had sounded. 'I'o Coach Dixon and to Moderator Brother Nltlienna are due the lligllesl praise and sincerest tongratulalions on a most suuesslul season. FRESHMEN BASKETBALL HE FRESHMEN BASKETBALL squad did its share to add to Central's cage laurels this year. Under the skillful direction of John Dixon, the Freshmen squad won seven, lost three and tied one. The Freshmen game of the year was the second encounter with the inuch vaunted Butte Hi Frosh. -Xfter losing the opening game ol' the season to the Butte Fixe by the hunrilating score of 53-17, the Central cagers eaine hack to defeat Butte Hi 52--18 in an overtime at their second encounter. That is evidence of the iniproveinent that the Frosh have made in the course of the season. To Coath Dixon and to Moderator Brother Nlclienna. congratulations on tl job well done.
