SCENES FROM RETREAT RCUND TABLE HE following letter sent to each member of the Round Table by the Prin- cipal speaks for itself of the work accomplished by this organization since its institution four years ago: Dear Member: It is with pleasure that we enclose the 1946-47 Round Table Card in sincere appreciation of your contribution to the cost of maintaining student activities at Boys' Central High School. IVithout Round Table support the achievements of the past several years would not have been possible. XVhen the Round Table was organized in the fall of 1943 student activities at Central were at a low ebb due to lack of public supportHboth financial and other- wise. Thanks to men like yourself. Central today ranks in every respect with Montanas leading high schools. Round Table Funds. administered by your able finance committee and the faculty. have solely and completely financed the following important projects: Employment of a full-time, salaried athletic coach. Purchase of uniforms and equipment for athletic teams. Modernization of athletic lockers and change rooms. Installation of modern and adequate shower baths. Introduction and financing of annual pre-season training camp for team con- ditioning. Providing bus transportation for all our athletic teams. thus reducing travel hazards. Originating, sponsoring and successfully conducting the annual Round Table Invitational Basketball Tournament. Sponsoring periodic Round Table entertainments wherein faculty. alumni and Round Table members meet for a review and discussion of Central's objectives. Over 900 men attended one such meeting honoring Frank Leahy. renowned coach of Notre Dame. Purchasing and presenting trophies for winners of C Y. O. sponsored parochial school football champions. 5taHing of athletic events with Round Table volunteer non-paid ticket sellers and takers. This faithful and loyal group has substantially aided in conservation of your funds. Setting aside the sum of Sl.500.00 in a special fund to provide a suitable me- morial for the sons of Central who served their country in the YVorld lVar. Such are the major achiey ements ol your Round Table. Your continued future support of this splendid program will enable the school to achieve equally bril- liant results in each of its other student activities. To the Round Table and each of its niemberswlor all that they have done lor the boys and the school-many thanks! Mr. 'lohn fBoloj Sullivan was appointed Chairman of the Round Table for 1946-47. One of the Round Table highlights of last spring was the welcome the or- ganization gave Mr. Frank Leahy. athletic director and head football coach at Notre Dame University. Mr. Leahy addressed more than l,000 members of the Round Table and their friends at the school auditorium. Scores of Notre Dame alumni and supporters assembled at the airport to greet the visiting coach. Mr. Leahy expressed pleasure at renewing friendship with Ed Simonich, coach of Central, and Ed Foley. a former Notre Dame student. 'Simonich was one of the finest players we ever had at Notre Dame. said Mr. Leahy. He also paid tribute to Dan Hanley, a former Central star, who was an outstanding halfback at Notre Dame. In discussing the trend of football. Mr. Leahy expressed belief that there would be lower scoring games and more stress placed on defensive play. Mr. Leahy was feted at a dinner party held at the famous Rocky Mountain Cafe in Meaderville by the Round Table. He left the next day for Logan. Utah, where he conducted a coaching clinic. EET? MR. Throughout his four years -Iames Dean was a stellar member of the tumbling team. ln the annual handball tournament .lohn Cayanaugh and john Kindt cap- tured the doubles championship. while John Clavanaugh won the singles title. The band received invaluable aid from such members as Edward Courtney. James Dean. Thomas McMahon. Eugene Quinn. Richard Sudak and Daniel Sullivan. VARSITY FOOTBALL ATE in August forty-eight football players embarked for a week's intensive training at Camp Lowlands to start their lb season. During the next seven days. the full squad went through a rigorous program of calisthenics, and also reviewed the fundamentals of blocking and tackling. AVith only two weeks until their first game, the team came back to Butte, a light but highly condi- tioned team. Teamwork, timing, and more blocking and tackling were stressed during the short time until the hrst game of a season that was to be one of the most successful ever accomplished. On September l5, the Maroons went on the field a team of which Central could be justly proud. After playing like champs the first quarter. Central coasted on to a I3-0 victory over a hard-charging Saint Peters team. To a team of Cen- tral's calibre the victory was unsatisfactory. Kellogg. Idaho, proved to be an easier encounter and the previous week's disappointment was soon forgotten when a 44-O victory was chalked up. ln their First game away from home, Central rolled up 31 points in the First half and rumbled on to a 31-0 victory over Kalispell. On the following week the team really hit their peak and through their precise blocking. tackling, running, and passing beat a strong Livingston team by a de- cisive 30-0 score. Havre proved to be a team worth reckoning with as the Blue Ponies extended the boys to a 14-13 hard-earned victory and the Xvestern Di- vision Class A Championship. The Copperheads, a Class .AA team, gave Cen- tral a little trouble in the first half, but the Maroons found their lost technique in the second stanza as Anaconda succumbed to Central 33-12. Butte High was all the boys thought about during a week of hard practice, and on Friday night, October 25, the fans who saw the traditional tussle between the city's two unbeaten elevens came out of the stadium with a lump in their throats, for with the score 24-20 against them. Central found themselves on Butte's three-yard line, only to be defeated by the heart-breaking noise of the timer's gun. For three weeks Central was idle due to a cancelled game. The inability of finding a game proved costly to the defending champions, who lost by the narrow margin of 13-12 to a strong Glendive team that had gone through their season with an unblemished record. XVith this game, the final one for nine seniors on one of the finest football machines that Montana had witnessed, went the State A championship. To Ed Simonich, our magnificent coach. we wish to express our thanks. for it was f'Big Ed and his able assistants. Athletic Director Brother QI. N. Mc- Nlahon, and line coaches, Rev. A. L. Kaparich and Mr. Toni Tobin, who. through their untiring work and patience. made the team what it was. A championship was lost, but not the more important lessons of Teamwork and Sportsman- ship, two of the most essential factors in the building ol character. The season is over now and it can be truly said that the Maroons enjoyed an extremely successful season. The record of six victories and two defeats speaks for itself. One thing is certain in the minds of those who saw the 1946 team in action. that thev were one of the greatest. if not the greatest, team ever seen in the gridiron annals of Central High School. B-squad coath. undertook the task ol developing a small but spirited group ol' boys into shape for their opening game of the 1946 season. After long, tireless ex enings of hard practices and scrimmages, Brother Reilly cut the squad to thirty players. who were to represent the B squad for the season. Using the fabulous T-formation. the team went through a rugged season against much bigger and heavier boys and lost a great percentage of their games. But their hghting spirit. which has always been the symbol of Central teams. brought them praise from their lollowers and fans who witnessed their games. Despite these losses. the boys showed great possibilities and promise ol' being luture stars on Central's Varsity Squad lor the lSH7 season. EOS! F3 RECCRD Central Tumi Opp. IS .Xnaconda 26 27 bt. From this group it was Coach Ed Simonich's job to choose, condition and put together a winning com- bination. This has become a habit with Big Ed and in a few weeks the boys were ready for their first test. Impressive wins against Class B teams paved the way to three hard-earned victories over Anaconda, St. Peter's and Livingston and gave the Maroons the championship of the Annual Round Table Tournament. Central rolled up seven consecutive victories before they Hrst tasted defeat in a game at Livingston. More victories followed till late in January. when K'Simonich's Little lrishmen played one of their best games of the season, rallying from a ten-point deficit in the third quarter to a startling 44-42 victory over Missoula. lt was the Spartans' first loss at home in three years. February and early March found the scoot and shoot boys from Central compiling an enviable record in Conference and non-Conference games, earning them fourth place in the Big 16. This record included a fourteen-point victory over the Missoula Spartans. destined State Champs. In their final home game the Maroons played magnificently, beating. with comparative ease, their arch foe, the Butte Hi Bulldogs, 36 to 28. This meant the City Championship for the fourth consecutive year and also kept intact their undefeated record in home games. which now ntnnbered l7 straight. Central entered the Divisional Tourney at Missoula as favorites, but proved to be a game-weary crew, barely overcoming a brilliantly inspired Glasgow team by four points. In the semi-finals the speed of the Maroon Midgets failed to match the height of the towering Bisons of Great Falls. The payoff game Satur- day morning, where the winner autotnatically advanced to the State Finals. saw the Maroons play their only good game of the tournament. downing Kalispell by 29 points. ln the evening game the Central team was beaten by a hot Havre live. 49-35, On the following XYednesday. the Maroons became one of the first high school teams to fly. as they winged their way to Great Falls and the State Tournament. The hrst game saw the teattt light as ottly Cetttral lcilllls know how. but tltey were uttable to stop tlte one-matt show ol Big Bill Hutchinson as he scorched the ttteslt ttettings lor 27 of tlte Billittgs team total of 46 points. ltt the consola- tion series the Marootts rallied front behind to down a hghting Attztconda teattt ell-36. Tlte littal game of the year saw tlte Maroons unable to corral tlte stattt- peding Bltte Ponies from Havre. This was tlte conclusion ol' tlte High School careers of six seniors who will be sorely missed in the forthcoming season. A word ol praise is dtte to Captain .lint McCattgltey, who through ltis consecutive teant play garnered 427 points attd a berth on the lirst All-State team. This year's team rolled up a record which compares layorably with any in tlte scltool's history. Tlte team brought lortlt again tlte coaching genius ol' Ed Sitttoniclt attd displayed to everyone tlte liglttittg spirit ol' all Sitttcntticlt-coaclted teattts. JOHNSON llantl Instructor Moderator is LET CENTRAL BAND 1946-1947 ONSIDERING the limited size ol the student body. Central maintains from year to year a remarkably representative band. This year is no exception. From its first appearance at the Central-Saint Peters game. this organization. by its spirited playing ol' the School Song and other numbers, has contributed largely to the peppy and enthusiastic spirit lor which Central is famous. Comments have been heard from time to time on the fine balance and har- mony shown in the playing ol the Star Spangled Balmer and other pieces in which this band surpassed riyal and larger organizations. For this contribution to the school, too much credit cannot be giyen to Mr. Martin Cesare. who labors incessantly and unsellishly lor his boys by priyate tutoring and by the skillful arrangement ol the pieces. This year the Central Band will lose through graduation some experienced players, but Mr. Cesare is already preparing lor this emergency by the training ol' a group ol Freshmen who we hope will maintain or even surpass the fine tra- ditions passed on by their predecessors.
