They came from the many splendid schools ol Butte. deeply imbued with their loyalties to their lormer Alma Matters. YYith the passage ol time they acquired a new loyalty. and soon were proud lo bear the name C1entralite. School spirit is popularly centered around the ballyhoo and excitement ol the school pep rally. and the gusto with which the school song is sung. How- eyer. the lfreslnnen ol 201 have shown that school spirit is something more. lt is the serious application ol the student body to study. I urther1nore. it is the putting into action those religious and social print-iples learned in the classroom. No one doubts that our Freshmen have acquired l1'llt: school spirit. The lttlti Maroon salutes them. .Xs loyal Centralites. they are the sehool's best advertisement. CLASS OFFICERS ,l. ORTH, J. SHIELDS, A. TURNER Page 44 FRESHMAN B CLASS 963 0-J qi U. 'If l'. Ed Simonich. Big Ed accomplished in one season what former coaches had failed to do in the two decades of Central football history: namely. the winning of the State Class title. Those who came in contact with Coach Simonich, whether on the field. in the classroom. or as SIJCCIHKOTS. have no doubt that he is one of the most outstanding coaches in the state of Montana. In the opening game of the season the Maroons defeated St. Peters: then they went on to down two conlerence foes, Havre and Bozeman. On October the twelfth the huge Helena Bengals journeyed to the Mining City and after a bitter struggle emerged victors in a 6-0 contest. The following week the team proved they had what a good ball club requires by bounding back and crushing the Flathead Braves to win the XVCSICYII Division Championship and the right to play Glendive for the State Class title. On a cold. wintry evening in Glen- dive. 500 miles from home, the boys wrote tl1e most glorious chapter in the an- nals of Central history when they sent the fullback. Flurry McClafferty, driving over for the touchdown that brought the long-sought trophy to the halls ol Central. Not satisfied with resting on their laurels, the champions then handed tl1e strong Anaconda Copperheads a resounding 19-li defeat. which resulted from completely outclassing their rivals in every department. On November the thir- tieth the traditional city championship game was played at the Naranche Me- morial Stadium. lVhen the linal whistle blew. the more powerfully manned Bulldogs were on the long end ol' a 27-0 score: but even in that last deleat, the lf!-15 edition ol the Maroons had endeared themselves in the hearts ol all their loyal supporters, who are looking lorward to even greater things in years to come. The boys will be ever gratelul to those lans whose backing was probably the greatest inspiration to their play. Although teamwork was the key' to their success, when the All-State teams were selected. Central was represented by Jack Coyne. wing-looted halfback. who garnered a second team berth, while honorable mention was given to Guard Ed Mondloch, and Quarterback Jim McCaughey. The members of the team honored Guard Steve Kasun by selecting him Captain of the 1945 season. and similarly honored End .lim Sweeney by choos- ing him to lead them during the season of 1946. YVe could not close without a word of praise and thanks to Athletic Di- rector. Brother KI. B. XYalsh. and Assistant Coaches. Rev. Father A. L. Kaparich and Mr. Ed Foley, who were instrumental in the teaching of the intricate formation. JAMES MCCAUGHEY 47. Page 52 ICI? SIXIHXILTI C'-1:1 L' I1 4 g ' -A ' 3 'A , , ,IS Ng., -422' ,X . Between the time of the Christmas 'liournament and the close of the regular season. the Maroons dropped games to the top Big 16 contenders: such as Helena. Bozeman. Liv- ingston and Kalispell. all ol which were lost only after hard-fought and well- played games. Furthermore. front the beginning of the season to near its close the team never reached top strength. Injuries and illness kept the squad from attaining its peak. However. for its last game of the regular season. with its cross-town rivals from Butte High. the teatn was at its greatest strength of the season. It was at this contest that the Maroons gave evidence of what they might have done all season if they had reached their peak. XYhy? Because they downed the Bull- dogs 42-24. the biggest margin ever chalked up in this thrilling annual classic. XVitl1 this stunning defeat of Butte High came the close of the regular season. The record which follows may not appear to be anything to talk about as far as wins and losses are concerned, bttt every basketball fan. in the City of Butte and in the other cities in which the '46 squad played will agree that this team displayed the fighting spirit which can be found only in a Central team. The Maroons of '46 will be remembered as the team which. although sorely lacking 16 height, threw many a scare into the teatns sitting on the pinnacles of the Big and which gave many headaches and heartaches to opposing coaches. Their regular season over. the Maroons journeyed to Kalispell for their Di- visional Tournament. The team opened play in this event by defeating the always dangerous and highly-rated Anaconda Copperheads 54-52 in one of the best games ever witnessed by tournament fans. This victory advanced the Ma- roons to the championship fray with the Missoula Spartans, a team which fin- ished second in the '46 lo race. The team fought gallantly in this game. bttt alter losing one of its key offensive men early in the second quarter via the fottl rottte and not experiencing the best of breaks. the Maroons dropped this game GS-43. The I9-lti season was all over now. but there is a special word of congratula- tion to be given to those who well deserve it. First. to Jim Mcflaughey. Junior. who led high scorers in the '-lti teatn with 297 poims and who was elected captain ol the '47 squad.
