The ordinary purpose of a yearbook is to serve as a peg on which to hang one's memories. This year climaxes the achievement of a dream: our jointure. The purpose is to furnish the best possible educational opportunities for high school age children residing in the school districts. V Could our early educators come back, they would scarcely believe the progress our school has made in seventy-'five years. If in the United States, we had the fullest apprecia- tion of the superiority of our opportunities, I am sure we should work harder to deserve them. What we take for granted would, in many countries be regarded as miraculous beyond dreams. If we match the greatness of our opportunities with the greatness of our efforts, then we may be assured that this school and our country may be soundly secure in its future. . . bus stop. B. Moyer for her long and faithful service as a teacher in the Boyertown High School. Miss Moyer spent the early part of her life on a farm, and always enjoyed nature and outdoor life. She likes traveling by plane or by car. On a nice afternoon one can probably find her at a golf course, or wandering through the woods. So we, the students of B.J.H.S., show our appreciation by dedicating the 19S4 Bear to you, Miss Winifred Y. Moyer. GEURGE B SWINEHART Supervising Prmclpal !'ii-Q95 aww! CLASS Senior Class Adviser Mr. Steinmullerg Beverly Reigh fTreas.lg Ronald Wasson fVice Presjg Roseann Drabinsky CSec.Jg and Daniel Ritter fPres.D. Graduates of 1954 Our four years here are coming to a close. We must soon seek our fortunes in the vari- ous fields of occupations. For some of us there is sadness of what we are leaving as well as gladness for what is to come. We go forth with ambition, integrity, and knowl- edge. Armed with these we hope to go far. Among the memories we hold dear are our various trips, proms, and gym exhibitions. Our trip to New York is unforgettable as are the ones to Gettysburg and Harrisburg. We are all sorry that gym exhibitions are tem- porarily discontinued but remember the good times and excitement of previous ones. The Class play, It's a Great Life, was enjoyed by all. The cast under the direction of Mrs. Fryer couldn't have done a better job. The blue and white you've seen will soon be replaced by the colors of the coming class: we hope they get as much wear and enjoy- ment out of their sweaters as we got from ours. We leave behind a good sports record and hope you who follow will keep it high. Along with that is the terrific band and marching unit which appeared at the games. Our senior prom was a highlight of the year, as was the senior dance we gave. Our trip to the court house in Reading as well as the one we took to Washington were looked forward to eagerly. We planned for them and expected them to be happy occasions, espe- cially the one to Washington since we knew it would be the last time we all would be together. We shall be remembered as the first class to graduate under the new jointure. Homeroom teachers will especially remem- ber some of us for always returning excuse blanks late or not at all. With these few memories in closing, we the class of 54 depart, with best wishes to those who follow. Several mem- bers of the junior class hold positions on our Cub and Bear staffs. A few also serve in the Visual Aids Club and lead Y Club activities. There are many important events in the school life of a junior. This year the junior class sponsored the Halloween Dance which was better known as The Cat's Meow. This was the first Halloween Dance in the history of B.J.H.S. The music was'provided by t'The King's Men who entertained a large crowd attending the dance. Great enthusiasm was displayed by the juniors who participated on the various committees necessary to make the dance a gleaming success. The next event on the agenda of the juniors' busy calendar was the annual Christ- mas Dance. This also proved to be a huge success and was a high light of the holiday season. With the arrival of spring a junior's fancy turns toward the Junior-Senior Prom. This, indeed, is the most important dance of the school year for the juniors and seniors. It is the time for creative thinking and hard work. The gymnasium will look its best as it is dressed in gaily decorated colors. It is also a time for dates, pretty dresses, and fond memories. An important decision for every junior is the picking of their class colors. They make this decision thinking of their senior year, for their choice will be displayed in their class sweaters and also in their Bean N 4? E. Specht CSec.Jg G. Kershrier CPres.Dg C. Under the capable supervision of Mr. Daniel A. Rohrbach, they were organized in a short time. The first event on the agenda was the adop- tion of a constitution. The second event was the election of class officers. The students elected were: President, Gene Kershner: Vice President, Clark Schanely: Secretary, Eleanor Specht: Treasurer, Ronald Boyer. This year the greatest event for the Sopho- mores will be the receiving of their class ring. Their ring will be the official B.J.H.S. ring. The Sophomore dance took a lot of hard work: but the reward came when the gala affair was termed perfect by all attending. I am sure you agree they rate a vote of thanks. The organization, under the leadership of Mr. Chester W. Rohrbach, was composed of forty-two students. The officers for this term were: Gregory Lignelli. President: Laverne Snyder, Vice- President: Janet Mest, Secretary, and Barbara Conrad, Treasurer. The Student Co-op met on alternating Thursdays in addi- tion to special meetings called by the presi- dent. The group consisted of seven students from each class. The Student Co-op annually sponsors the March of Dimes Drive in Boyertown Joint High School, which has always been very successful. They also sponsor the cerebral Third Row, Left to Right: K. This year the organization operated the Lost and Found Department during the last half of the term: and they set up a pencil vending machine, to which the students had access at all times. The group became a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils. Eleven members attended the Berks County Student Activities Con- ference at Muhlenberg Township High School on November 6. This event will remain in their memories because of the unexpected snowfall that had them stranded for a time in Reading. The Student Co-op sponsored a dance and two cake sales in 'order to raise money for their special functions. J' Standing, Left to Right: Mr. Stevens CAdviserl, L. Renninger fVice-Presi- dentl, W. FUTURE FARMERS 0F AMERICA Perhaps you have seen our boys who take the vocational agriculture curriculum drive past in a truck or on a tractor. You always knew they were an ambitious group of young men but never heard about the hard work these boys transact. Among the projects they have completed are harvesting fifteen acres of corn, preparing it for wheat and oats, reconditioned a hoe tractor grain drill, and repaired and painted the agriculture department's pick-up truck. This is only a sample of the F.F.A. boys' fine work around our school. They are always ready to lend a helping hand. The boys do a professional paint job. The Bear covers events from the opening of school until the closing day. After selecting a theme, the staffs, such as the editorial staff. business staff. photography staff and the literary staff, carry on all the work that is necessary to get the book off to a good start. With heavy schedules, including the deadline, subscription drive, patron drive, dances, variety show, and the PSPA convention, the students are always kept busy. You probably have often seen members of these staffs busy during their seventh periods doing their Bear assignments, which consist of taking snapshots, conducting various drives, and interviewing students and teachers. The Bear has always been a topnotch book and has received many honors in past years. In this book, the sixteenth volume, the staff hopes to publish a book that will always be remem- bered at B.J.H.S. With a nine-piece color squad, Five twirlers, and their snappy drum majorette, Nanette Kline, they certainly added color and spirit to the football games, and pep rallies would not have been quite the same without the enthu- siastic band music. Hearty congratulations are extended to the marching band for the first prize award of S100 which they received for being the best band in line, in the Hallowe'en parade at East Greenville. A few weeks later they had the honor of being asked to participate in the Green Lane Hallowe'en parade. From December right through june our eyes are focused on the Concert Band, con- sisting of forty-five members. With such men as Curtis Hartman, John Warfel, and Richard Reagan, captain, the team got off to a good start Last year's win-and-lose record does not reveal the entire picture of individuals efforts. Special mention must be made of John Warfel, who won the mythical Berks County high jump championship. Curtis Hartman and Richard Reagan also did a commendable job. Cross Country squad ready to go. Coach Francis D. Sell, began his seven- teenth season as head of the Cross Country Team in Boyertown Joint High School, with three returning lettermen to start another season of this grueling sport. The Bears got off to a good start by nip- ping the Muhlenberg thinclads, 26 to 29. In the second meet with Pottstown the long- legs tasted defeat with the score of 27-28. The Bears came home from Hill School faced with a second defeat. The boys, back on their feet again, defeated Muhlenberg, 26-29. But soon were down again, beat by Pottstown, 26-29. Then came the big meet- District 3, run at Venzkes Golf Course. Boyertown placed fourth with Bruce Fries finishing the course. This qualified Fries for the State Finals. There he placed 83rd out of 150 harriers from all corners of the state. TRACK TEAM Front Row, Left to Right: D. Norris, B. Fries, R. Bartman, C. Hartman, J. Warfel, R. Reagan, Captain D. Keyser. The chatter in the halls is usually about plans for the biggest event of the year-the Junior-Senior Prom. The gymnasuim is gaily decorated according to the theme selected by the Junior Class. Com- mittees are chosen for each special event and the juniors select a leading band from a list of several. Each person attending receives a special invitation which must be presented at the door. This festive event has been the dream of most of the underclassmen since their first year in high school. The thought of buying that pretty new gown makes springtime even more bright. The prom not only offers enjoyment to every- one, but it helps the teen-agers to prepare them- selves for a more mature life when they leave school. The gala junior-Senior Prom will always be remembered by those who attended.
