These Spell Football 1949 Season Royersford West Reading North Coventry Pennsylvania School for the Deaf Wilson Shillington Muhlenberg Spring City East Greenville son but bowed to Shillington and Muhlenberg. In Perkiomen-Schuylkill Valley League games they Won decisions over Royersford and North Coventry, but were edged by East Greenville. In non-league competition the Bears defeated Spring City, but were outclassed by the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. Thanksgiving Day, 1949, saw the Bears, with thirteen seniors finishing their high school football careers, lose a hard-fought ballgame to East Green- ville by a 7 to 6 margin. The Boyertown attempt at the extra point was good but had to be rekicked because of a holding penalty. On the second attempt the ball fell short, strongly reminiscent of the Shill- ington game of 1948. Fifteen

Fry, and Daniel A. Rohrbach, opened the season with three consecutive wins. In the curtain-raiser an aroused pack of Bears rallied in the last quarter to nose Royersford, 7 to 6. The following Saturday, the locals broke a 7 to 7 halftime deadlock to trounce West Reading, 34 to 7. Next the Norco Wildcats underwent an 18 to 0 trampling. The Boyertown Bears finished the 1949 football campaign on the credit side of the ledger with a record of five wins, four losses.
